Friends of the Rosary,Today, amid the Lent's austerity, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the most sublime moment in the history of time, when the Second Person of the Holy Trinity assumed human nature in the womb of the Virgin Mary.At midnight, when the most holy Virgin was alone and absorbed in prayer, the Archangel Gabriel appeared before her and asked her to consent to become the Mother of God in the name of the blessed Trinity.Saint Irenaeus, a holy bishop and martyr of the second century, showed us that Nazareth was the counterpart of Eden.The angel of darkness, the serpent, tricked Eve, who longed for the forbidden fruit and was impatient to enjoy independence. She ate the fruit, and death took possession of her: death of the soul, for sin extinguishes the light of life; and death of the body, which, being separated from the source of immortality, became an object of shame and horror and finally crumbled into dust.Meanwhile, the spirit of light in Nazareth respectfully bowed before her, speaking heavenly language: “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with thee! Blessed art thou among women!”Mary heard the angel's explanation of the mystery, and the will of heaven was made known to her. She, the humble maid of Nazareth, experienced the ineffable happiness of becoming the Mother of God. Mary told the divine messenger, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to thy word.”The obedience of the second Eve repaired the disobedience of the first. The eternal Son of God became present in the chaste womb of Mary, and He began His human life. A Virgin is the Mother of God, and, consenting to the divine will, conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost.The Mother of God, the Immaculate Conception, would become the Queen of all creation.This is Solemnity Day, “Lady Day” or Annunciation, when our Lenten penance obligations are lifted. We should celebrate with some special food or dinner. This feast day forecasts the event of Christmas.The Roman Martyrology commemorates St. Dismas, the Good Thief, and St. Margaret Clitherow (1556-1586), wife and mother, one of the English martyrs.March 21, 2025, marked the fifth year since we started praying the Holy Rosary of Mary daily within this community. Throwback to one of the wildest and most unforgettable nights of my Broadway career—the opening night of Ain't Too Proud - The Life And Times Of The Temptations on March 21st, 2019, and performing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Playing live on national TV was already a huge deal, but throw in a mad dash through Times Square with a police escort to make it back to the Imperial Theatre for opening night? That took it to another level.After performing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon at 5 PM, we still had to race across town to the Imperial Theatre for our Ain't Too Proud opening night. Traffic leaving Rockefeller Center was brutal, and for a moment, it looked like we might not make it. But somehow, we pulled up just in time.I had a click track in my ears during this Tonight Show performance—same with the music director. The band and lead vocals were 100% live, but the background vocals were pre-recorded and locked to the click.Here's a little secret that not many folks—maybe not even most of my Ain't Too Proud cast and bandmates—know: between “Get Ready” and “Ain't Too Proud to Beg,” I had four clicks to cue me into the next tune. I was supposed to kick things off with that classic Benny Benjamin intro fill… but with the adrenaline rushing, nerves firing, and Questlove and The Roots watching from the wings, I skipped the fill and went straight into the groove.Thankfully—it worked. But man, knowing millions of people were watching, then thinking about how we had to jet across town and race to opening night right after this? My head was spinning.Looking back, I'm grateful for moments like that—creating something meaningful, making people smile, and sharing the stage with some of the best in the business. Ain't Too Proud should still be running, no doubt—but that's a convo for another day. For now, I'm just appreciating the journey. And with what I'm working on over the next few weeks, maybe there's one more Broadway run in my future.But if not? I'm good. I've had my shot—and I truly hope you get yours. Mike Dobson is a drummer, percussionist, and Foley artist who has spent over 20 years bringing stories to life with his unique combination of live music and sound effects.With degrees from The Hartt School (B.M.) and The New School (M.M.), Mike has the training and the creativity to tackle any project. He co-wrote the offbeat production Room 17B and has worked with top directors like Tina Landau.Mike's journey started behind the drum kit, but his passion for sound grew during his early days performing in circus and clown shows. That's where he learned how sound effects can create humor and enhance storytelling, lessons he's carried throughout his career. One of his standout roles was as the live Foley artist for The SpongeBob Musical. I first met him there and was able to work with him when subbing for Damien Bassman. He continued that role in The SpongeBob Musical Live On Stage, proving that sound can bring just as much personality to a show as the actors on stage.He's the drummer and percussionist for the Broadway show Water for Elephants, based on the bestselling novel. In this production, Mike doesn't just play drums—he helps create the world of a traveling circus during the Great Depression and uses traditional percussion, found objects, and custom instruments. ABOUT JACKÉE HARRY Vivacious, witty, and completely unforgettable, Jackée Harry was born to entertain.Born Jacqueline Yvonne Harry on August 14, 1956 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and reared from the age of nine in Harlem, New York, by her mother, Flossie, Jackée landed the lead role of the King in her school's production of The King and I at the tender age of fourteen. Upon graduation from New York City's High School of Music and Art with a distinction in Opera, Jackée attended the University of Long Island, where she earned her B.A. in education. Jackée began her career as a history teacher at Brooklyn Technical High School but left after two years to pursue acting. She studied at the Henry Street Settlement on the Lower East Side and made her professional acting debut in 1973 in Richard Wesley's Goin' Through Changes; not long afterward, she made her Broadway debut in A Broadway Musical as Melinda Bernard. Other Broadway performances include The Wiz, Eubie!, and One Mo' Time. In 1983, Jackée made her first television appearance opposite Morgan Freeman in the daytime soap operaAnother World. A year later, she landed her iconic role of Sandra Clark on the NBC sitcom 227. As the breakout star of the series, Jackée became the first African American to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and was also nominated for a Golden Globe. Her performance on227 inspired NBC producers to create a television pilot for her entitled Jackée. After departing from 227 in 1989, she starred opposite Oprah Winfrey in the critically acclaimed adaptation of Gloria Naylor's novelThe Women of Brewster Place. In 1991, Jackée joined an all-star cast led by Della Reese when she played the role of Ruth 'CoCo' Royal in The Royal Family. From 1994-1999, she starred as the adoptive mother of Tia and Tamara Mowry's characters on the ABC/WB sitcom Sister, Sister, winning the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for two consecutive years in 1999 and 2000. Jackée also made guest appearances onAmen, Designing Women, Dave's World, Hollywood Squares, 7th Heaven, and That's So Raven, before joining the cast of Everybody Hates Chris in 2006. Hollywood success did not lead Jackée to turn her back on theater; in 1994 she returned to the stage as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill followed by stints in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide and The Vagina Monologues. In 2003 she played the role of the Madam in The Boys From Syracuse on Broadway. Jackée also performed before sold-out audiences across the nation in the stage play The Cleanup Woman, which is called "one of the highest grossing gospel stage plays of all time" and fronted an Off-Broadway limited-run of NEWSical: The Musical.Beyond acting, Jackée is a vocal champion of healthy living, education, and philanthropy. She is proud to be a spokesperson for the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, and a Global Ambassador to the Women's International Center. The National Congress of Black Women presented her with the "Woman of Substance" Award in 2010.In addition to recurring roles on Let's Stay Together, Baby Daddy, Girl Meets World, and The Cool Kids, Jackée starred on the CW's The First Family and OWN'sThe Paynes. This podcast is about Billie Holiday, one of the most popular singers of the jazz age. Lady Day was born born Eleanora Fagan in 1915. While surviving a difficult childhood she developed a unique vocal style, improvisational skills, and pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Holiday won a recording contract in 1935 and immediately produced her first big hit. "What a Little Moonlight Can Do", became an instant jazz standard. Billie Holiday remained a very popular recording artist and concert performer through the 1940s and '50s. She died of cirrhosis in 1959, at the young age of 44. Holiday won four Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. You're going to hear Lady Day help teach a course in music history on New World A Coming in 1944. She performs on the popular Arthur Godfrey Show on CBS Radio in 1947 which also features the Mariners, one of the first popular integrated singing quartets. Hailing from Perth Amboy, NJ, Juan "Carlito" Mendoza is a seasoned musician with over 25 years of experience. A classically trained percussionist, he excels in playing the marimba, timpani, orchestral snare drum, vibraphone, drum set, and hand percussion. Juan obtained his BA in Music Education from New Jersey City University in 2004 and earned his MA, summa cum laude, in Music Education in 2013. His musical journey has been enriched by studying under renowned instructors like Nicholas Cerrato (Timpanist for the Tony Award-winning Broadway show "Cats"), marimba expert Greg Giannascoli of the Philadelphia Pops Orchestra, and Brazilian percussion maestro Guillerme Franco.Juan's musical prowess was evident from an early age. At 13, he won Best Soloist at the national Maid of the Mist competition in Niagara Falls, Canada. His competitive spirit continued through various drum corps engagements. He performed with the esteemed Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps from Hawthorne, NJ, in 1997 and 1999-2001. In 2002, he joined the Syracuse Brigadiers, contributing to their victory at the Drum Corps Association World Championship and securing the best percussion title. That same year, Juan outperformed 35 other contestants to become the Drum Corps Association Snare Drum Champion.Juan's talents have also led him to feature in Pat Petrillo's educational DVD "Learning to Read Rhythms" by Alfred Music, where he recorded all the musical examples and appeared as a featured soloist. His crowning achievement came in 2012 when he outshone over 5,000 competitors to win the Guitar Center Drum Off Grand Champion title. https://cartermclean.com Carter was born in San Francisco and shortly thereafter moved to Connecticut. This is where McLean listened to and fell in love with music and especially the drums. At age 10, he started his journey as a musician. Broadway wasn't even on his radar when he started working at Manny's Music in Manhattan just prior to 9/11. The self-taught musician had just wrapped up his studies at University of Colorado, Boulder and was hoping to land a gig with someone like Sting, Peter Gabriel or Paul Simon. But then, while working his shift and playing at the store, he got noticed by a vet of Stevie Wonder's band Dennis Davis and got invited to play with legendary musician Roy Ayers in Harlem. While touring with Melvin Sparks in 2002 McLean was approached to be a sub at The Lion King in NYC. This eventually lead to McLean taking over the chair at the hit show in 2011. From Charlie Hunter to the Lion King on Broadway, McLean has been busy touring and doing studio work as well as having a busy teaching schedule.
