Her Mic: Anya Randall Nebel

Back in June, Christie & Izzy sat down to pass the mic to Anya Randall Nebel.  At the height of the Black Lives Matter protests and COVID-19, Anya carefully traces her family's journey through generations of amazing Black women.  From Anya's Grandmother's roots as a domestic worker in Ellicot City, Maryland, to finding her own joy, freedom, and connection in music & theatre, to mothering a daughter through the protests, police violence, and the uncertainty of 2020 - this episode is packed with the kind of richness that only an incredible storyteller like Anya could bring.   ANYA RANDALL NEBEL’s 40-year career as a singer, actor, director and producer, has taken her on many successful national and international tours. She was last seen at Spotlighters Theatre in their production of Love Letters. Shortly after, Ms. Nebel appeared in the critically-acclaimed and Helen Hayes recommended, Lady Day in the Anacostia Playhouse. Ms. Nebel, having recently opened her directorial debut at the DC Fringe Festival with Soul Redeemer, also holds a 2017 Bachelor’s Degree in Music Production and Engineering from the Berklee School of Music. Anya is a three-time Honors Recital soloist at Carnegie Hall, and is the premier founding member of Winters Lane Productions, a company that teaches and mentors young performers in the business of theatre. Currently, Anya is the Managing Director of LaTIDo, DC's premiere musical theatre cabaret and spoken word series. Tune in to Ms.Nebel’s solo album and podcast, Brown Girl Loves Classics, now available to stream on major podcast platforms.   THE HER MIC SERIES:  The Her Mic series is our way of passing the mic to women of color, in particular Black women, whose voices and stories have been marginalized for too long, as well as women who have experiences bearing upon the important conversations around anti-racism. In typical FWSS fashion, these are heart-centered conversations, told from where She sits. Introducing a special series from the From Where She Sits podcast - Strategies for Sanity.   It's become clear over the past couple of weeks that we're coming to grips with a "new normal."  Christie + Izzy are interviewing guests who are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis who can help shed some light (and maybe even some hope!) on the questions we're all having during this unprecedented time. This week:  With over 10 million Americans now unemployed, many New Yorkers are wondering how they will make rent.  We're interviewing Meaghan Whyte, a nonprofit housing attorney here in NY, about rent strikes, public benefits, landlord communication, and more! Meg is a staff attorney at Mobilization for Justice, a civil legal services nonprofit in NYC.  At MFJ, she represents tenants in Housing, Supreme, and Federal Court in both defensive and affirmative litigation.  She is a fellow Capricorn, a self-loathing Mets fan, and a connoisseur of trashy British reality television.   Resources: Department of Social Security - Human Resources Administration (HRA) https://www1.nyc.gov/site/hra/about/about-hra.page   The intake hotline at Mobilization for Justice is open Monday-Friday 9 AM - 5 PM: Manhattan & Brooklyn - (212) 417-3888 Bronx - (212) 417-3889  http://mobilizationforjustice.org   Like what you hear?  Leave us a review!   Music courtesy of Ondina (@ondinathequeen). How does she do it?  It’s the age-old question that Christie and Izzy attempt to answer on this week’s episode about the juggling act of modern life.  On the one hand, Christie, our resident Gen-X gal, is a business owner trying to find balance in parenthood amongst grief and loss.  And on the other?  Millennial Izzy continues to chase down creative living through what feels like a billion side-hustles.  As your favorite Capricorns grapple with ideas such as work-life balance, they are unceremoniously interrupted mid-episode.  Tune in to find out what happens!  Don’t forget to leave a review and be sure to follow them on Instagram @fwsspodcast @fromwherechristiesits @fromwhereizzysits to see the #struggle firsthand.  Join the From Where She Sits Podcast Facebook group to share your own thoughts and stories!

Somebody call the research team!  These Capricorns are neither doctors nor wellness experts.  Christie & Izzy are here this week to talk to you about what it's like living inside a human body with often very little clue what's going on.  Christie wonders if millenials have the upper hand with the bevy of resources available for self-diagnosis on the World Wide Web, while Izzy struggles to accept that pizza can be a great cure for the common cold.  Taking care of their bodies is obviously important to these ladies, but when does the pursuit of ultimate and total wellness become....unhealthy?  Chime in with your thoughts on IG (@fwsspodcast) or via the From Where She Sits Podcast Facebook page!

Things take a more serious turn this week when Christie & Izzy decide to exchange what they are most envious of each other for.  Your favorite Capricorns have been through some pretty serious life changes recently, and find themselves wondering what life is like in one another's shoes.  Izzy still longs for the security of feeling settled, while Christie sees Izzy's freedom as her own source of envy.  Be sure to stay updated with them on Instagram @fwsspodcast, @fromwherechristiesits, & @fromwhereizzysits and join them on Facebook in the From Where She Sits Podcast group to share your reactions to this week's episode!  As always, hit the subscribe button and leave a review!

Somehow Christie & Izzy don’t think Jane Austen would be a huge fan of this episode.  Filled with plenty of totally cringe-worthy admissions, Episode 10 is about everything from first crushes and first kisses, to proposal fails and Harry Potter quizzes.  Your favorite Capricorns are going there again, so buckle up and try not to gasp too loud on that subway car.  All jokes aside, love is tough & these ladies have seen it all.  It’s no wonder their parents sent them to all-girls’ school with all of this boy-craziness.

Her Cynicism

Today your favorite Capricorns look down to that deep and dark place where one of their emotions lie - their cynicism. Are you full of positivity and light or full of questions and side eyes? How does life impact how you view the world? Christie’s rose colored glasses are off right now and Izzy’s are floating on the tip of her nose. When all is said and done, if you identify as someone who is not a cynic - Christie and Izzy are not sure they believe you.  Surely you must have had an experience similar to Christie, who, when faced with the death of her father received some questionable gifts.  Or maybe you can relate to Izzy's dismay at the true source of a haunted family heirloom.  Be sure to stay updated with them on Instagram @fwsspodcast, @fromwherechristiesits, & @fromwhereizzysits and join them on Facebook in the From Where She Sits Podcast group to share your reactions to this week's episode!  As always, be sure to hit the subscribe button and leave a review!

Your favorite Capricorns give you a glimpse into arguably the most important relationship in their lives – their relationship with their moms.  This episode is all about Erin B. and Pattie D. and how they created two women who knew they were loved and supported – no matter what.  Although Christie has lost her mom and is a mom herself, Izzy is still clinking wine glasses with her mom at the shore and unsure of whether she will become a mother herself.  One thing is certain:  they are products of the air they breathe.  Whether your mother is near or far, this conversation is sure to make you sit and reflect on the person who, quite literally, brought you here and probably made you some questionable school lunches along the way.  As always, we would love to hear from you so please send us a note and say hello at fromwhereshesits@gmail.com, on Instagram at @fwsspodcast, @fromwherechristiesits (for Christie) and @fromwhereizzysitys (for Izzy) or find our Facebook group – The From Where She Sits Podcast - and join the conversation there!

A “rugged individualist” and an “expert” sit down to discuss that quietly creeping discomfort everyone secretly feels.  What does it take to feel you’ve earned your place in the world?  Awards and official recognition hardly seem to have convinced Christie she’s deserving of her reputation as an attorney and Izzy constantly fears that everyone is making fun of her.  Constructive self-criticism quickly turns from useful to crippling when we let our imposter syndrome take the wheel - but how did this doubt show up in the first place?  Let us know your thoughts on Instagram: @FWSSpodcast and individually at @fromwherechristiesits and @fromwhereizzysits.  Don’t forget to subscribe & leave a review!

Episode 5, lovingly subtitled, “Tears, Hairs, and Scares,” is all about the great miracle of life:  pregnancy.  In the wake of Izzy reading a terrifying Buzzfeed article, Christie attempts to myth-bust her millennial co-host’s anxieties surrounding pregnancy.  Does pregnancy cause superpowers?  How did Izzy become convinced she was the next Virgin Mary?  And, on a more serious note, do the rising costs of reproductive healthcare for American women prevent millennials from having children?  Christie has plenty of advice to share from her time getting “hella swole,” including her thoughts on what it's like to become a mother when it feels like you're just not ready. What is the difference between faith, religion, and spirituality?  Will Izzy's grandma disown her for not going to church every Sunday?  Should Christie let her kids join the church in their new town? Where does a white butterfly fit into all of this?  In their fourth episode, Christie and Izzy delve into faith as it applies to their lives today, as well as discuss their Catholic upbringings and various moments of spiritual upheaval throughout each of their lives.  While Christie doubts her ability to meditate, Izzy recalls a spiritual consultation over a New York City salad bar.  With humor and curiosity, your favorite Capricorns attempt to tackle some of life's biggest questions.   Follow them on Instagram at @FWSSpodcast and individually at @fromwherechristiesits and @fromwhereizzysits for more information & review, comment, and subscribe!

Christie and Izzy dive into talking about their bodies in really honest ways. While Izzy thought having her pediatrician tell her that being in the 99% percentile of weight was furthering her desires to maintain high performance, Christie’s pediatrician “affectionately” called her Miss Piggy. In “Her Body,” your favorite Capricorns explore how the self-talk that drives our self-perception has been formed by their experiences and the world around them. From their butts to their eyebrows to whether grey hairs multiply by sevens when you pull them out – they give it all up to you. Christie and Izzy found that talking about their bodies in a really honest way took them further inside themselves than they have gone before.
