INTERVIEW AND TASTINGJames recently tasted and spoke with his old friend Tor Kenward and Jeff Ames, proprietor and winemaker at Tor Kenward Family Wines over Zoom. The quality of the 2018 vintage in Napa Valley was on full show. Particularly at a winery such as Tor, which makes only a few barrels of each wine and pays such close attention to the entire winemaking process from vine to bottle, the 2018s were a beautiful example of how small-production, single-vineyard wines can really shine in a top-quality year. They spend the first part of the interview discussing the harrowing moments of last year's fires - James finds out his friend was okay and that he lives near James's house in St. Helena - then they discuss 2018 with its ups and downs but great wines. They also discuss the quality of 2019, which is another winner like 2018. Tor Kenward Family Wines was founded in 2001 by Tor Kenward and his wife Susan who put their efforts into single-vineyard wines from the best lots of the best vineyards. During the call, James, Tor and Jeff tasted a selection of wines that showed great diversity. "2018 is about as good as it gets," Tor said, while James particularly enjoyed the Tor Napa Valley Pure Magic Vine Hill Ranch Vineyard 2018, a new super selection from Vine Hill Ranch, one of James' favorite vineyards in the Oakville AVA with a long history of making great wines. They also talked about the 2019 vintage, the horrendous 2020 fires and more. Listen to the full podcast to hear the highlights of the conversation and see what they thought of the wines.Read James' full Napa report here, and check out our top 10 chardonnays of the Carneros AVA here.

In Episode 83 of the Mr. Wine Guy Podcast I had the privilege of republishing my interview with Tor Kenward, Owner and Proprietor of TOR Wines out of St. Helena, CA. It's hard to know the best things to ask someone who has literally done so much and been at the forefront of so many monumental things in the wine industry but Tor sits down and shares some of those experiences and especially the people who have been such an influence on him over the years. Tor talks about his experiences working at Beringer Vineyards for an incredible 27 years and what it meant to work alongside legendary winemaker Ed Sbragia during his tenure. Of course Tor shares what it means to have his own brand TOR Wines since 2001 and the privilege it is to have winemaker's Jeff Ames and David Grega onboard crafting his wines. Tor also shares his joy and appreciation for his wife Susan, what Susan means to him and all the ways she's inspired and motivated him over the course of their lives together. Words can't explain how much I KNOW you're going to enjoy this epsiode but I think the one thing you'll take away more than anything is just how humble and charismatic Tor is. Tor is constantly trying to inovate and push the envelope in everything he does as he continues to elevate his impact on not only people in the wine industry, but also people who love and appreciate the wine industry for eveything single thing it has to offer. So sit back, relax, and get ready because you are going to love this episode. In today's episode of the Mr.Wine Guy Podcast, you’ll get to hear a truly inspiring conversation from a man whose whole mission in life has been to dream BIG and to live INSPIRED! Today I present to you John Boich, Owner and Proprietor of Boich Family Cellar out of the Mt. Veeder AVA of Napa Valley. John talks about the inception of Boich Family Cellar and how it all began when a casual conversation about available Real Estate in Napa Valley with Roberta Wall, led to a trip to the northern most tip of the Mt. Veeder AVA and an impulse purchase of the property we now know as Boich. John even mentions that, “this whole thing started with a connection to the land” and now, the rest is history. To go on, John talks about his love and appreciation for Duane and Roberta Wall and how John feels Duane is not only an incredible human being but a “father-figure mentor and one of the most do-it-yourself men he has ever known.” John talks about the privilege it is to have winemaker Jeff Ames and assistant winemaker David Grega onboard manning the helm and how, between Jeff being one of the best and most talented winemakers he has ever known, and David being one of the most educated and sophisticated palates he’s ever been around, you couldn’t ask for a better, more appropriate fit for Boich. John also talks about some pretty solid advice he would give himself if he could go back in time and that would be to “establish role models along the way, always seek out people, and surround yourself with people that you respect and look up to.” With that being said, this episode is jam-packed with so much inspiration and so much emphasis on following your dreams, doing what you love, and being completely and totally passionate about everything in the process. If you’re in a position today where you feel like a little inspiration and motivation is all you need to catapult you to the next level then this episode is for you. So sit back, relax, and get ready, because you are going to love this episode. With his father's suburban loaded up with Petit Sirah and layered with dry ice, David Grega, nearly asphyxiated on the highway before he got his grapes to the crusher on his very first day of winemaking. As someone who has no interest in saying "no" to opportunity, David has taken a novel approach to his career with wines. An Army combat veteran of Iraq, cigar enthusiast, self-made Tea sensory instructor, and now Cab winemaker by day and Rhone wine guy by night, it became clear during our podcast conversation that the unifying characteristics of David's success in a range of fields stems from his focus and hyper-disciplined self education. We spent a good portion of our recorded conversation talking about David's path into all things wine and ended with his specific vision of what he hopes his impact to be on the winemakers that come after him. Carlotta Wines is the brand that David and his partner created to focus of wines using mainly Rhone varietals. David also works with winemaker, Jeff Ames, who is the creator of the Rudius Wines, and together they manage Jeff's clientele of high-end Napa Wineries including Tor Kenward, Boich Cellars, and Anthem Winery.
