Send us a textA Galway street corner, a chance hello to Adam Duritz, and a sunglasses-off moment with Courtney Cox set the scene before we pour something special: Maker's Mark Cellar Aged 2025. We start with the nostalgia and then zero in on why this release feels different—same mash bill, new dimension—thanks to a cool limestone cellar that slows the dance between spirit and wood.We break down what matters for your glass. The blend leans 74% 11-year with 13- and 14-year components at 112.9 proof, and the profile announces itself on the nose with brown sugar, cinnamon, toasted oak, and that apple-pie cozy note. On the palate, it turns decadent but never cloying: orange and cherry like an old fashioned, chocolate and toasted almond like a pastry, and enough spice to remind you it's nearly 113 proof. The fruit shows up earlier than you'd expect from a wheated bourbon, while leather and tobacco stay in the background. If you've only known standard Maker's as sweet and light, this one bends the arc toward depth and balance. We also talk price, timing, and how to find a pour without burning your budget. MSRP lands at $175, with some secondary lift, so we tested by the ounce first—a move we recommend. Bigger retailers and smart whiskey bars will be your best bet, and if you spot it near retail, we'd grab it. Our ratings land strong, and we call it a top contender for year-end lists, especially for drinkers who want a dessert-ready sipper that doesn't need ice or a mixer to shine. If this kind of fruit-forward, cellar-shaped wheated bourbon sounds like your lane, come taste it with us, compare notes, and tell us what you're getting in the finish. Subscribe for more pours, share with a friend who underestimates Maker's, and leave a quick review so others can find the show. What bottle should we chase next?

Some houses grow up with you. Others grow darker. On the surface, it was everything a kid could want: a big yard, an old swing, and endless trees to play in. But beneath the floorboards waited a basement he was never meant to explore—a low stone space where the hatch slammed on its own, the light vanished, and something in the dark laughed softly behind him. Years later, the basement fear climbed the stairs. Night after night, slow footsteps crept toward his room, stopping just outside the door… until the night he finally looked and saw a black, hanging shape attached to the ceiling, blocking the doorway like a living shadow. Was it the same thing that had chased him up from the cellar, or something the house had always kept hidden? Some childhood homes stay in your memories. We're back at Star Hill Farm in Kentucky, sitting in the Heritage Room at Maker's Mark, joined by Dr. Blake Layfield, the master distiller and head of innovation and blending. It's the perfect day for bourbon, and Blake takes us through one of the most fascinating tastings we've ever done on the show. In front of us are three glasses that tell the whole story of Maker's Mark: the classic cask strength expression that represents the founders' original taste vision, an eleven and a half year over-aged barrel that shows what happens when oak and tannin push a whiskey outside those guardrails, and finally the new Maker's Mark Cellar Aged release, a blend of eleven, thirteen and fourteen year old whiskey that is rich, dark and complex without drifting into bitterness. Blake explains how Maker's Mark has kept the same mash bill, yeast and process since 1953 and why they focus on intensity, velocity, complexity and finish instead of simply naming tasting notes. He talks about what makes wheat spice feel so different to rye spice, why age is not a measure of quality in American whiskey, and what “age to taste” really means inside the distillery. We hear the story of the limestone cellar, why dynamiting a hill changed what was possible for Maker's Mark, and how the Cellar Aged project shows a new dimension of the classic house style. Blake also lifts the curtain on their blending process, where weeks of blind tasting eventually shape each year's release. If you've ever wondered how far Maker's Mark can push maturity, what really happens in their warehouses, or why Cellar Aged tastes the way it does, this episode is a brilliant deep dive right from the source. Chapters: 00:00 Welcome from Star Hill Farm and the Heritage Room 00:13 Introducing Dr Blake Layfield and why this room matters 00:35 Heritage, culture and what makes Maker's Mark unique 01:08 Returning to Maker's, where you first fell in love with bourbon 01:20 Three glasses on the table and what each one is 01:50 Glass 1: Maker's Mark Cask Strength and the founder's taste vision 02:32 How Maker's has kept the same recipe since 1953 03:00 How Blake thinks about tasting: intensity, velocity, complexity and finish 04:10 Cherry notes from the yeast and wheat spice versus rye spice 05:49 Mash bill details and why the high malted barley is unusual 06:11 Velocity in the glass and how aroma meets you halfway 06:46 The history of classic 45 percent Maker's and the first innovation, Maker's 46 08:10 Opening up Cask Strength as a regular offering 08:36 Glass 2: an eleven and a half year over aged Maker's Mark at cask strength 09:30 Why age is not automatically better and how American oak can take over 11:08 Tannins, dryness and the “I want water” reaction 12:16 Learning that bitterness and astringency are a choice, not a requirement 13:19 Talking about hand rotation, ricked barrels and low entry proof 14:09 Age to taste, not to a number 15:10 The limestone cellar and the birth of Maker's Mark 46 16:10 Glass 3: Maker's Mark Cellar Aged, dark, rich and complex, no bitterness 17:26 Aroma and flavor of Cellar Aged, bright cherry to dark cordial cherry 18:05 How long it spends in warehouses versus the cellar 18:33 Year by year blends and showing what cellaring can do to flavor 19:04 Inside the blending team and how they choose the final profile 19:45 Beth's winning streak and Rob Samuels' final sign off 20:32 How old can the cellar go, and where they expect the inflection point

Today, we're heading back down to the cellar for another episode from the archives, and as part of our mini literature festival we're holding this month, it's from another bestselling author... My guest today has written more than a hundred books, and is also a broadcaster, a knitwear designer, a former politician, and a celebrated raconteur.Having become well-known on breakfast television in the 80s, in no small part thanks tohis choice of knitwear, he's been a mainstay on TV shows like The One Show,Countdown, Celebrity Gogglebox, This Morning, and Radio 4's Just a Minute. He was also the host of the award-winning Something Rhymes with Purple podcast with Susie Dent, and on his latest pod, Rosebud he talks to famous and fascinating people about their first experiences. This is the last of our November authors - I hope you've enjoyed this look back - and for December we've lined up some festive episodes designed to put you in the perfect mood for Christmas. Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Each week, in addition to a brand new episode, we delve into our back catalogue to serve up a vintage episode from our cellar. Today it's Donna Ashworth - a Scottish poet who shot to stardom during the COVID-19 pandemic and has since been credited with revitalising a national interest in poetry. So as the weather takes a turn for the worse why not snuggle in and treat yourself to 45 minutes of something inspiring. I hope you enjoy this episode - and we'll see you back here for a brand new interview next time. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Our mini literature festival continues with an author who helped shape the the early part of the millennium - her New York Observer column 'Sex & the City' would spark a TV show that endures to this day - 30 years on from the first published anthology of her work. Candace Bushnell has gone on to write many more books, many continuing the tales of Carrie Bradshaw. In 2023 Candace joined White Wine Question Time for a chat - and as we look back at some of the best authors to have appeared on the podcast it felt right to include this episode. If EVER there was a time to pour yourself a glass - it has to be to this. Enjoy xx Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

EL James doesn't do podcasts - in fact appropriately enough we popped her podcast cherry (Absolutely no safe words required). As part of our look back at some of our favourite authors to have appeared on the podcast we couldn't look past this one. Erika (her real name) is one of the best selling authors on the planet - but her fame came later, after a successful career in British TV. It is an extraordinary conversation - which took place back in 2001 - at a time when she was trying to juggle homeschooling and launching a range of adult toys. Weren't we all. Hope you enjoy it - but just a word of warning, it probably is one for listening to on headphones - you can imagine but some of the chat is quite saucy. Cheers Hosted on Acast. Welcome to this week's edition of the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas podcast, I'm John Engleman, thanks for being here! This week, we're at one of the most popular breweries in our area, Rendezvous Junction Brewing Company in Rogers where we're talking with Founder and Owner Mike Peerson and Head Brewer and COO Kenny Warden, but before we get to them?!? (*FOOD NEWS*) Mallory Files of the Ozark Charcuterie and Wine Bar BREAKS NEWS WITH US!! The Cellar on B Street opened last weekend Top Chef NWA took place on Saturday. We'll hear from the winner! Sugar Llama's opened over the weekend in downtown Rogers. We'll hear about their journey! Happy Anniversary to El Rey Bar and Grill and Pleasant Counter! We'll tell you all about Bistro 16's wine dinner and how you can score free tickets! The iconic Herman's Ribhouse is for sale. We'll hear why. The soon-to-open Sestina at the soon-to-open Compton Hotel in the Bentonville Square has named their chef! Sassafras Springs Winery has a gorgeous new spot on their premises The Dumont Creamery opened their doors in Bentonville this weekend Wright's Barbecue's Johnson location is close... VERY close to being done. Mike Peerson didn't start Rendezvous Junction at their current location. In fact, it started at the old Foster's Pint and Plate in Rogers... Of course, Foster's closed and that left them without a home and without folks to drink their beer. Who bought it during that time? We've interviewed them on here, so it won't be a surprise to many of you. In fact, Mike ended up taking one of his employees and now he's the head brewer and COO of the company, Ken Warden, who we'll be talking to as well. Mike and Ken will tell us how they got into beer, the successes and failures, and Mike talks about dying. Yes, he's officially died and been brought back. Some great stories- thanks for being with us here on the Flavors of Northwest Arkansas!
Growing up in the central valley of California, we've inherited a sense of pride from our Greek parents and have continued to farm vineyards and make wine, incorporating the Mediterranean lifestyle and culture into our everyday lives. We don't make wines that are made to have an instant and powerful impact like tasting room wines; our wines are wines of finesse and elegance, and are made to be enjoyed with friends, family, and food. From the proprietors: We grew up growing winegrapes along with working at our parents' mom & pop grocery store. When we got older, we fell in love with wine and began working on our viticultural practices, and then decided to start our wine project. We are known for our old vine Zinfandel field blend vineyard called "Stampede Vineyard," as well as planting & producing some of the first Assyrtiko in California. We are trialing other Mediterranean varieties going forward as well.
Over the next five Tuesdays we're holding our own mini literature festival. We've delved deep in the archive to find some of the very best authors we've spoken to over the past seven years, and what an icon we have to kick it off! After a successful career as an actor Lynda La Plante became intrigued by the production process of television drama and began writing treatments, ideas for potential shows that were, well, very much her own. Although most were rejected, one was praised as utterly brilliant. By 1983, her six-part series Widows premiered and became the highest rating series of the early 1980s. Following the show's success, she established herself as a highly sought-after crime writer with women at the heart of her stories, and the release of her debut novel in 1987 quickly established her as a critically acclaimed best-selling author to boot, paving the way for a series of hit books that followed in rapid succession. By 1991, she hit new heights and broke new ground with the premiere of the world-renowned Prime Suspect. A detective drama starring Helen Mirren as DCI Jane Tennyson, which went on to win numerous BAFTAs, Emmys and Golden Globes over the course of its seven seasons and made Helen Mirren a bona fide global superstar. It's no surprise that in 2008 she was awarded a CBE for her services to literature, drama and charity. is a member of the Crime Thriller Award Hall of FameWe'll be back on Thursday with a brand new episode. A National Treasure. That's what Stephen Fry is. Whether you know him as General Melchett, Jeeves, half of Fry & Laurie, the sound of Harry Potter, the genius of QI or the modern Homer retelling Greek mythology to a new generation - he has touched most of our lives in some way over the past half century. So seeing as Stephen is currently on our screens as himself in The Traitors we thought it was a timely opportunity to bring his episode of White Wine Question Time up from the cellar for another airing. We spoke in early 2025 - with Stephen in LA - about the UK import of Jeopardy, what attracted him to It's A Sin, his incredible documentaries on gay rights around the world and his advice for young creatives joining the entertainment industry. As you would expect, it was truly fascinating. Enjoy the episode and don't forget we'll be back on Thursday with a brand new episode. Cheers. Hosted on Acast. Jim discusses a little-known 1970 British horror film from Tigon Productions - "The Beast In The Cellar," starring Beryl Reid, Flora Robson, John Hamill, Tessa Wyatt, John Kelland, David Dodimead, Dafydd Havard, and directed by James Kelly. The story was based on a true story about two spinster sisters who kept their younger brother locked in a cellar for several years. Time for another trip to the cellar for something vintage. This episode of White Wine Question Time was originally recorded in 2021 - when the world was in lockdown. Dannii was in Melbourne having moved back from London several years earlier. The conversation takes in memories of living in the UK, motherhood, advice for the next generation and also Dannii's revelation when it comes to clothes sizing. It's a really lovely chat, which although recorded at a very strange time still seems extremely relevant today. This is an abridged version of the original conversation - you can find the original in our back catalogue. Don't forget we'll bring you a highlight from almost 500 episodes of White Wine Question Time every Tuesday and a brand new guest every Thursday. While you're here... please don't forget to 'follow' this podcast - it means you'll get new episodes sent directly to your podcast app when they're released - it's completely free, but it helps the podcast greatly. Maker's Mark Cellar Aged debuted in 2023 to much acclaim and it was announced that this would be an annual limited release from the brand, showcasing the best of their aged whisky stocks. When we reviewed 2024 version of this bourbon(E192), it became clear that the profile of this whisky would be different each year. Fast forward to the current episode - we taste and review the 2025 version of cellar which is comprised of 11, 13, and 14 year old whiskies and comes in at 112.9 proof. When we reviewed the previous batches, we were overly complementary and rightfully so. But how does the new 2025 batch taste? You'll have to listen to find out. In 1855, when women and children began disappearing from Choctaw settlements in Oklahoma, a band of thirty warriors led by Joshua LeFlore rode out to hunt down the kidnappers. It supposedly did happen in real life and I'll tell you the story! (The Leflore County Bigfoot War) *** The body of 25-year-old Jason Chase was found several weeks after he had gone missing – but the cause of his death was a mystery to everyone for almost twenty years. (The Eerie Death of Hiker Jason Chase) *** There are people in life that you just would rather not deal with. Wouldn't be great if you could just put them on ice and let some other future generation deal with that person? Well, aside from the morally unacceptable actions you'd have to take to make that happen, the technology for doing so might not be too far away. Some of the ulta-wealthy are making plans to be brought back to life later, or to live for a very long time, or… even to be immortal. (How The Super Rich Plan To Live Forever) *** Soon after moving into their quaint Massachusetts country home in 1981, Lui and Dale Passetto encountered a force of pure evil that almost destroyed them and their family. (The Passetto Family Possession) *** On August 29, 1890, a 16-year-old boy named Otto Lueth was hanged at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus. He had been tried and convicted of the murder of Maggie Thompson, age 9 – a murder for which he had shown no remorse. It is a sad and tragic story… but also one of utter horror.
