Next time a vintage aircraft flies overhead there's a good chance it's being propelled by the handiwork of a man from Manakau, an hour north of Wellington. For over 25 years Jeff Fox has created wooden propellers for classic aircraft like tiger moths and sopwith camels. He can put up to 300 hours of work into each handcrafted propeller for clients including First World War aviation buff Sir Peter Jackson. Jimmy Ellingham reports.

This week on the podcast, Zach Kazan is joined by Worn & Wound contributor Tommy DeMauro. Tommy has been writing for Worn & Wound for a little over a year, and his work occupies a very specific niche: accessible, affordable, and highly collectible vintage and neo-vintage watches. Tommy is uniquely obsessed with finding oddball references from years past and studying them deeply, and proves through his research that you don't have to spend much money at all to have something genuinely rare and special. Many of the watches Tommy writes about are eBay finds, and most are well under $500. Some are under $100. All of them, though, have something interesting going on in terms of their history, design, or functionality. In this conversation, Tommy explains how he got into watches in the first place and eventually found his niche with affordable vintage watches. They also discuss some of Tommy's articles that he's written for the website, including guides to the Seiko Orange Monster and the truly unusual Timex Triprix. Tommy also provides some advice to listeners who might be interested in dabbling in this corner of the watch market. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast on all major platforms including Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, and more. What do you think of this episode? Do you have any topics you'd like me to cover?Remember those years when your child followed you everywhere, and gazed at you with adoring eyes because you knew everything? Have they now turned into a teenager who simply grunts, or screams at you, when they occasionally emerge from their bedroom?Changes in a teenage brain help them to develop abstract thinking and self-reflection but they also make them hyper-critical and keen to develop emotional distance so they can practice life without you around. What to do: Daniel Siegel says we need to teach them to have reflective conversations:Numerous brain studies show that when we do this (either with someone else or in our own heads) it stimulates the integration of the prefrontal cortex where planning and problem solving takes place, and allows us to tune into others ie empathy. How to do it: JoAnn Deak - Girls will be girls.Don't assume or jump in straight away.Don't move straight to the fix-it mode.Help them to explore what they're saying. Leave some grey areas.Discuss strategies for action. Don't overreact. Once you're in the strategy phase that's when your knowledge can help inform the teenager's decisions. Don't be afraid to provide your moral/philosophical bottom line. There are so many grey areas it can be a relief to know there are some black and white's.Techniques: Parent Gym based on how to talk so your kids will listen.Super silence and active listening. When to do it?Try to develop regular non-crisis moments where conversations can happen. Saying goodnight, car journeys, meal-times, fixing their bike. Listen to the news together to start a discussion. Get them to entertain you. What's the gossip? What are you reading? What have you been watching? What's your favourite music at the moment? Take a genuine interest in their answers. Harley Davidson Sportster; the red headed step child of the motorcycle world. Harley people think they are "beginner" or "girl's bikes", and non Harley riders just think it's a Hardley. So where do they belong? In the sports category as HD has them? As an 883cc beginner bike? Here's the thing, they have an interesting history and a race lineage to boot. For a cruiser they are pretty nimble and fun, and as Chris has proven on 4-1/2 Iron Butt Rallies, they can be long distance bikes. In fact, they can be anything you want them to be. Vintage, chopper, flat tracker, tourer or even cafe racer. So why are the older bikes so cheap right now? We find many examples across the country of Sportsters for sale right now, at Honda Shadow prices. So I can't believe I'm saying this, but you need to buy a Sportster, right now. Way back in the sepia-toned past of podcasting (circa 2016), I sat down with Joel Korte of Chase Bliss Audio — before the blinking lights took over the world and before I fully understood how microphones work. Can you believe that this episode is almost a decade old? What a wild ride it's been! This episode has it all: – Engineering nerdery – Emotional whiplash – Mild Midwestern awkwardness – And at least one questionable Paul Reed Smith tangent – Strollerblading! Joel shares how a stint at a major guitar company, and one very big life detour somehow led to building some of the most innovative pedals on the planet. And I mostly just try not to say anything too stupid. It's clunky. It's charming. It's full of chaotic origin-story goodness. Basically: if you've ever wanted to hear a future pedal wizard in larval form, this is the one.
