For decades collectors of comic books, coins & sportscards have protected their collectibles by having them professionally graded & slabbed. The team behind Vintage Media Grading (VMG) shares how their process can be a gamechanger for vinyl record collectors. Topics include: Vinyl grading is tricky – why use VMG? VMG Grading comes from Goldmine standard Using best practices from Baseball Cards & Comic Book gradings Walking through the grading process Supplying info, provenance, etc What would get rejecting for rating? How other industries get graded (paintings, cards) Is there an appeals process for a grade? The difficulty in getting a “10” grading Grading is consistent no matter the rarity 12” records now, 7” and 10” under development Can they do double or triple LPs? What about inserts, special LP additions, etc Ability to change album details if new information arises Vinyl has much more complexity than other graded items VMG Focuses only on facts, cannot state assumptions How VMG labels promotional copies Their sources for determining authentic pressings and info Not relying on crowd-sourced materials Does VMG do play-testing? Hot-stampers may not be right for VMG The impact of the plastic case on records and covers Can the plastic case be opened? Autographed records, backstage passes, etc Will they work with acetates and test pressings? Working with international customers Best practices for shipping to VMG How are the records handled through the grading process Length of time the grading process takes Not just collectible records but personally important records Interview wrap up Learn more at VMGVinyl.com Extended, High-resolution & Commercial Free version of this interview available at: www.Patreon.com/VinylGuide Listen on Apple: https://apple.co/2Y6ORU0 Listen on Spotify: https://spoti.fi/36qhlc8 Follow our Podcast: https://linktr.ee/vinylguide Facebook: www.Facebook.com/VinylGuide Instagram: www.Instagram.com/VinylGuide Support our show: www.Patreon.com/VinylGuide If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you. Stephen talked about Sphere and the history of American consoles, Smoky Joe amps, printing fx plugins, recording drums, acoustic, and electric guitars, deconstructing your tape machine alignment, and stereo ribbon mics. West Ham are in a European final! Sheffield Wednesday gave us one of the most dramatic nights of the season! And José Mourinho's Roma… yeah, well they drew 0-0 with Bayer Leverkusen and had one shot to progress to the final of the Europa League. Vintage.Marcus, Vish, David and Jim chew on all of that with their Bobby Dazzlers (more on that, too) and discuss why Frank Lampard's Chelsea will definitely halt Manchester City's march to the title on Sunday. Plus, an unlikely gripe with construction sites in Birmingham and Vish's even more unlikely obsession with Cesare Maldini. When doing research for a recent live event, we uncovered yet another LA serial killer that hunted at the Barclay Hotel in DTLA. The Brickbat Slayer was responsible for several attacks and murders in both Los Angeles and Chicago in the mid to late 1930's. Tenacious police work and forensic evidence eventually linked his brutal crimes and brought the terror imposed on both of these thriving cities to an end. This week, the doctors re-visit serial killer Robert Nixon, aka “The Brickbat Slayer”, taking the opportunity to make a more incisive examination of his crimes and the spirit of the times in which he lived. Runaway Souls is a rock and roll band from Louisville, Kentucky comprised of long time local musicians who share a passion for vintage vibes, though the music clearly speaks of today's times. Most of the members played together in different groups over the years before gelling in the lineup of: David Thomas-vocals Darren Barker-guitar Brian Segal-guitar Donnie Bott-bass Ashley Vega-vocals Toni Carroll-vocals Woody Woodmansee-keys Jim Becker-drums Before the pandemic, they performed as a cover band. However, given the time, circumstances, and inspiration a new original sound emerged. A sound that blended their love for big guitars, soaring harmonies, some jammy outros, with tinges of tones from their influences. What started as one song for local radio, "Shelter with You" opened the door for more. One song led to another and eventually the Karma Delivery album was born. Resilience is a recurring theme on the album, with many songs dealing with the times that were and the additional challenges that presented themselves. Runaway Souls is performing live and continuing to write new material for a follow up record. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tophillrecording/support

Is it bad to print your mix offline? John talked about the importance of arrangement, mastering dynamics in your mix, the Fletcher Munson curve, listening loud and quiet, crest factor, customer care, and why some plugins are different every time! Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is John Mayfield a mastering engineer with over 50 years of experience and owner of Mayfield Mastering in Berry Hill. Originally a career musician, John turned to recording and mixing in the 80s travelling to studios all over the world. He has also been a guest on episode RSR036. Originally a successful touring and studio musician John started out in the studio recording and then mixing all over the world finally settling on Nashville to start his own mastering studio. Dave Matthews Band, Sara Evans, Kathy Mattea, Naturally 7, Warner Brothers Records and Universal Music Group-UK, to list a few. John notes on his website that everyone in music is trying to figure out what is next and define the new business model. Since records are being made more often by independent sources with smaller budgets that cannot always afford the high dollar mixer the need for quality mastering is very much in demand. “Music will always be a part of our lives. Maintaining and improving the quality of that music has always been at the heart of my efforts. It is not a job to me, but rather a true joy, You would be amazed at what we can do with a project in mastering that might not have been an A+ mix.” THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! https://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://www.Spectra1964.com https://MacSales.com/rockstars https://iZotope.com/Rockstars use code ROCK10 to get 10% off any individual plugin https://jzmic.com Use code ROCKSTAR to get 40% off the Vintage series mics plus get a FREE shock mount ($120 value) https://www.adam-audio.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy Use code ROCKSTAR to get 10% off https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Listen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2PQ8g3iNvYcH2XeBXDLtSl?si=938d345bee734267 If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/401

Most people know him from the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, widely regarded as one of the most influential films of all time. Clarke was born in England in December 1917. He said his interest in science fiction began with the November 1928 issue of Amazing Stories magazine at the age of 11, which he read in 1929 after it had been shipped from the United States. Sir Arthur Charles Clarke remembered buying this life changing magazine at Woolworth's and said, “How I used to haunt that once-famous store during my lunch hour, in search of issues of Amazing, Wonder, and Astounding, buried like jewels in the junk-pile of detective and western pulps!”Clarke did have some stories published between 1937 and 1945, those stories were published in fanzines. His first professional sale was published in Astounding Science Fiction in April 1946. He was still a member of the Royal Air Force at the time he sold his first two stories to Astounding in 1945. Rescue Party sold first, followed by Loophole which was the first story actually published. Over the next few years his stories appeared regularly in leading pulps, and he always acknowledged them as his ‘launch pad' to become a writer. He wrote around 100 short science fiction stories during his career and dozens of novels. Today's story first appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories magazine in August 1950. A Walk in the Dark by Arthur C. Clarke…Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Ralph Banks editor of Popular Crafts Monthly, was a short stocky man with a round pink face, a crisp crew cut, an intensely energetic manner. When a letter from the Smithsonian Institute came across his desk it caught his attention, A Practical Man's Guide by Jack VanceThat's next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.

We talk about all the various stamps through he generations that can be used to identify vintage A. Zildjian cymbals, along with notes on the hammering, lathing, and bell size that can help you determine collectibility and value of a vintage Zildjian cymbal. While Amanda takes a few weeks off to go to Japan, do a bunch of research and reading, work on outreach for future guests, and just generally get inspired and rested, let's revisit some of the favorite episodes of the Clotheshorse community. The thrift industry has a major impact on the humans working within it. Wages are low, expectations are high, and there is little room for advancement. Also: it's gross and frequently dangerous. In 2021, Dylan and Ryan worked for one of the largest thrift store chains in the United States. They share their experiences making sense of the unwanted stuff of strangers. This episode was released in June 2022, and it ties in SO WELL to the recent ethics of secondhand resale series. If you want to share your opinion/additional thoughts on the subjects we cover in each episode, feel free to email, whether it's a typed out message or an audio recording: amanda@clotheshorse.worldCheck out Amanda's other podcast, The Department.Find the transcript at clotheshorsepodcast.comWant to support Amanda's work on Clotheshorse? "Made Loud To Be Played Loud!" Bill talked about recording with his son Michael, how to create cinematographic drums, single mic vocal stacking with The Eagles, producing demos on a boat, how to record great rock guitars, and singing at 8000 feet. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Bill Szymczyk (and his son Mike Szymczyk) a Grammy-winning and multi-nominated American music producer and engineer best known for producing Hotel California by The Eagles. He produced many top albums and singles of the 1970s, though–aside from continuing to work with Joe Walsh–he retired from the music business by 1990 re-emerging in the late 2000s for select projects including the 2007 Eagles album Long Road Out of Eden and the 2008 eponymous debut of Brian Vander Ark. Unlike many music producers, Szymczyk has no background as a musician. He was originally a sonar operator for the U.S. Navy and took some audio production classes as part of his Navy training. Besides his work with the Eagles, he has produced hit songs and albums for such diverse artists as B.B. King, Joe Walsh, The James Gang, and Elvin Bishop.
