Can secondhand finds become your full-time income? This episode breaks down how thrifting transforms into a sustainable business, with actionable advice on sourcing, live selling, and building a thriving vintage brand from closet to community!   SHOW NOTES: Thrifting for vintage fashion and building a supportive, inclusive vintage resale business.  The importance of timing your thrift trips around special sales. Build relationships with fellow thrift sellers, so you can trade inventory with friends who have different specialties (like menswear or kid's items), allowing each to focus on their niche and benefit from group knowledge and resources.  Curating your finds by aesthetic or style (e.g., whimsy goth, romantic, boho). Thrifting with a specific aesthetic in mind helps you envision how pieces can be styled together and increases the appeal of your finds, whether for your closet or resale. Shopping secondhand offers more freedom than retail chains, where you're limited by the outfit on the mannequin. Trust your instincts, pick what genuinely speaks to you, and creatively style unique finds.  The importance of having a "mission statement" for your brand and being selective with collaborations.

Today, we're chatting with Monica and Scotti, a mother-daughter team behind CS80 Vintage who are rediscovering the 80s in a way neither of them expected.  Monica, who once worked in sporting goods and later built a career in photography and organizing – helping people deal with large-scale hoards and inventories, stumbled into a massive vintage collection during the pandemic. When the original owner, Franz, passed after years of illness, the inventory — tucked into basements, an attic, gazebos, and storage pods — just sat. Nobody knew what to do with it. Her daughter, Scotti, now 23, grew up thrifting and has always loved vintage – now she's helping mom preserve an incredible archive of true 1980s deadstock sportswear.  Neither Monica or Scotti set out to be vintage dealers. They've learned from conversations with experts and mentors and midnight eBay searches, like we all do.  They have uncovered what turns out to be — by the account of multiple experts — one of the largest deadstock vintage sportswear collections ever found: 10,000 pairs of sneakers, thousands of hats, blanks, jerseys, satin jackets, and more. Every single piece true deadstock, never worn, straight from the warehouse. On today's show, they'll share how they did it. All the sales strategies, collaborations and pop-ups. Scotty came home, built a website from scratch, launched their Instagram in December, and within two weeks had gained 28,000 followers. How their drops sell out reaching collectors from Paris to Japan.  A pair of boxing shoes sold to a film produced by Sylvester Stallone. Their clothes filled the set of a Target x Stranger Things commercial. But more than any of that, this is a story about honoring Franz's life work, about a mother and daughter collaboration, and about what it means to be the unexpected stewards of something rare. It's a really really good one — let's dive in.   DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [5:57] How Monica and Scotti came into the largest deadstock vintage sportswear collections known to exist. [12:21] How they started to discover the value of this collection. [14:14] A mentor warned Monica she could "destroy the vintage market" — and the responsibility to sell slowly. [15:12] Their first major sale was a buyer from Japan at the Alameda Flea Market — the moment Monica and her husband realized what they really had. [19:00] Scotti came home, launched a website for CS80 and started Instagram sales. [21:49] How pricing works differently depending on geography, buyer, and context — and why the story behind CS80 commands higher prices than comparable pieces. [24:07] Honoring Franz's life work and what it means to be the unexpected stewards of something so rare.  [30:32] Most surprising finds and holy grail collector moments [33:56] What they've learned about vintage labels and how a single label difference can change value by hundreds of dollars. [39:53] What happens when CS80 sells the last deadstock piece? [47:43] Favorite personal pieces they've kept, and what comes next. No creó a Lavos. Combates encadenados. Trampas. No negocia. No habla. Solo decisiones. Solo esperan volver a jugarse.

Overnight snow storm composite — my a.m. recording of the massive January 23–27 storm with some notes and late 70s radio blizzard coverage. Speaking of storms of yore, do y'all remember the email storm? They're the Mona Lisa of human/ tech pratfalls. An email storm, or replyallcalypse, is when a surge of emails is exchanged as users continually “reply all” to the original message. Modern inboxes have safeguards to prevent email storms — which is a shame, as I'm positive humans are still willing to ensnare themselves. I witnessed an impressive email storm in the mid-aughts while working for Newscorp. So, twenty years ago — second Bush administration — think Wii Bowling and High School Musical. I was at a Fox owned-and-operated station in Philadelphia… it was Newscorp (boo, amirite), but also one of the favorite places I've worked (colleagues were cool, and it was a paid TV gig in an actually awesome city, Jim's was within lunchtime walking distance). But seriously — commercial television news: don't watch it. You don't need it.Look — picture the aughts, the golden age of the mobile phone. A cellphone store felt like sticking your face into the 2005 movie Robots. Different sizes, colors, shapes, personalities. They flipped, had tactile keyboards, and looked fab in a holster. My cellphone was a Nokia N-Gage QD (so sick).I worked the morning show (4 a.m. start), graphics. So, on the Fox Email Storm morning, I wandered by Independence Hall and fragments of Benjamin Franklin's former home. I buzzed into the lobby and was immediately intercepted by a PA.“Do not respond to the email.”And I was like, “What?”“There are emails. Delete them and don't respond.”“Which email? What?”“You'll know,” she said, already rushing to the next person. “Do not respond to the email.”The IT guy caught me getting off the elevator on the second floor. “Do not reply to the email or you will be ******* fired.” And he smiled to soften the threat, but I was sure he wasn't kidding.Ooph — intrusive memory. That was the same elevator where I once felt alone enough to stop fighting a fart… and then a ringed hand reached in to stop the door from shutting. In walked the traffic reporter, dressed like an adult. And I was wearing a comic book t-shirt in a cloud of my own gas. Bluh. Never assume your elevator journey will be solitary just because you got on alone.Where was I — email storm, Fox News. So some Detroit station intern sent a very late-night email to all. Everybody got it. Brit Hume, Sheppard Smith, Hannity, Colmes, the pride of Bethlehem High School, Megyn Kelly, corporate leadership, Geraldo, me and everybody else. Not only did some intern obtain an email address that pinged company-wide, the dude emailed that address. Praising the president and scooping on some vanilla jingoism. I was like, this is the dangerous email? You're from Detroit, man — at least invoke Oliver Hazard Perry.Whatever — my inbox was flooded with assenting voices — cheering it on, remixing the messaging from Detroit. I searched through the wreckage for any specialty graphic orders and then dumped the day's emails. Went to grab some coffee.I returned to another pile with more popping in. Notification chimes, “12 new emails,” it was astounding. The messages were transitioning now to “Unsubscribe.” I heard running in the hallways. A new larger wave of emails asked to be removed from the list. People were shouting in all caps. I started to imagine these voices were yelling at me — “TAKE ME THE **** OFF THIS LIST!” Senders that brandished titles like “Head of This” and “Department Lead” in their email signatures. A new wave of earlier assenters began desperately rescinding their messages by sending even more messages. One user feebly wrote [[UNSEND]].It went on a bit longer before finally petering out — great day at work. I think I even splurged on an extra slice at Gianfranco.

We are all very loyal...to _________________. [Matthew 26:33-35] Peter declared, “Even if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.” [34] Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” [35] “No!” Peter insisted. “Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the other disciples vowed the same. True loyalty is ________________ not proclaimed. [Proverbs 20:6] Many will say they are loyal friends, but who can find one who is truly reliable? [1 Samuel 14:6-7] “Let's go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!” [7] “Do what you think is best,” the armor bearer replied. “I'm with you completely, whatever you decide.” Loyalty does not ________________. [1 Samuel 14:12-14] Then the men from the outpost shouted to Jonathan, “Come on up here, and we'll teach you a lesson!” “Come on, climb right behind me,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “for the Lord will help us defeat them!” [13] So they climbed up using both hands and feet, and the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor bearer killed those who came behind them. [14] They killed some twenty men in all, and their bodies were scattered over about half an acre. Loyalty is a willing ________________. Loyalty may eventually require ________________. Loyalty to God will be ________________. [James 4:8] Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. All disloyalty is born out of a ________________ heart.

It has been owned by Rémy Cointreau since 2012.Barley doesn't grow well on Islay, so most is imported from other regions.  But Bruichladdich didn't like that, so they worked with a local farmer and have Islay-grown barley, over half is grown in Islay nowTo help it grow, they began rotating crops by adding Rye. Rye has not been grown on Islay, so this was brand new.  They have a rye now!Our Bottle: Bruichladdich The Classic Laddie"Trickle distilled" refers to a slow distillation process, often involving multiple runs (like triple distillation), where heat is carefully controlled for a gentle drip, resulting in a purer, lighter, smoother spirit by separating heavier compounds (congeners) and capturing lighter, more floral flavors, famously used in Irish whiskey and certain Scotch malts. On average, our Classic Laddie batches are made from 76 different casks, comprising 4 vintages of spirit, 3 barley types, and 7 cask types. Our bottle is 25/050A VATTING OF 81 CASKS, 5 VINTAGES, 6 BARLEY TYPES AND 10 CASK TYPESSupport the showWebsite:www.whiskeychaserspod.comFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/whiskeychaserspodcastInsta:https://www.instagram.com/whiskeychaserspodcast/TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@whiskeychaserspodcastThanks For Listening! I recently started doing some of these episodes with a cold open, however, this episode commands a bit of a backstory. Many of you are familiar with Matt Bain as he is certainly one of the original Vintage watch dealers in the world still working today. He has sourced some of the finest pieces the community has ever seen and he's widely known among the top collectors in the world. For me, however, it was back in 2009 when I first met Matt. I was working at James Perse in Malibu, when in walks this gentleman who I could tell was not a local resident. As I began to ask him questions to get to know him a little bit, he told me he sold watches. For example, Ralph Lauren, and more specifically, the RRL store around the corner was one of his accounts. I had seen the odd vintage Rolex submariner in their case lines before, but I guess I just didn't realize it was being sourced by someone outside of the company. This was around the same time that I started reading Hodinkee as well as writing my own fashion & lifestyle blog, Screaming Mouth.Matt told me he went by “Watch Commander,” so I continued to check his website off and on for years to come. I didn't see Matt again until last year in Miami when I attended the Antique Show for my first time. I walked up to his booth, re-introduced myself, basically explaining to him that there's no way he would remember me, but we had met some 15+ years ago. Matt actually said that he indeed recalled that meeting, and we started chatting immediately. I kindly requested that he come on the show, and here we are roughly a year later. As many of you know, I returned to Miami a few weeks ago, and fresh off of my red eye flight, I took an Uber over to Matt‘s office where we recorded this conversation.Matt has amazing taste not only in watches but in cars as well. I was beyond excited to sit down with him as he's been someone I've looked up to from afar for over a decade, so this was a special one for me.Matt and I talk about his early days as a dealer, his affinity for Art, the best investment he ever made, as well as his furniture business, which I'm not sure many of you know about, and course we touch on his car journey as well. This one was a long time coming, so I hope you enjoy it.
