A Prayer to Root Out Pride

Just as deceptive weeds can creep into a healthy garden, pride often sneaks into our hearts, growing unnoticed among our accomplishments and even our service to God. Annie Yorty uses a vivid gardening metaphor to help us recognize how pride takes root and how we can humbly invite God to weed it out. Through reflection, Scripture, and prayer, we’re reminded to give glory to the true source of all our gifts: God alone. Themes Explored: The subtle danger of pride Recognizing the difference between self-glory and God-glory Daily humility as spiritual “weed control” Confession and dependence on God for heart inspection Living for God’s glory over our own Scripture Reference Jeremiah 9:23 (NLT) “This is what the Lord says: ‘Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.’”

CD 1700 Diagnosing and  Defeating Double MindednessI heard this in my spirit: “Don't major in the minor and minor in the major”!In our natural lives which is a pattern of or from our spiritual lives in order to change something we have to first come to the understanding that something needs changing. If we're feeling ill in our bodies, or in our minds then we need a diagnosis. Only after we get a diagnosis can we defeat the problem. This morning we're going to be talking about diagnosing and then defeating double-mindedness. Double-mindedness is something that will hinder your entire life until you bring it under subjection to the Word of God. Double-mindedness will keep you from receiving the promises of God's word which is the truth that makes you free!*Text: James 1:1-8 (KJV) James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. [2] My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; [3] Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. [4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. [5] If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. [6] But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. [7] For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. [8] A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.#1 Divine Diagnosis *Reread James 1:8 (KJV) A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.Note the Bible give us a clear definition of what the situation will appear like in your life if you are being double-minded! He said we would be "unstable" (ak-at-as'-tat-os) inconstant - this has to do with making a decision and then ruling and living from that decision. If we're always changing our minds, changing our words, and thus changing our actions then we have just been diagnosed with double mindedness! Can you imagine getting inside of your automobile and there were two steering wheels? How could the automobile be driven? The answer is it could NOT be driven with two drivers! Let Jesus drive, that leads us to our next point:#2 Divine Direction*Reread James 1:5 (KJV) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.The Lord God gives direction to all who ask in faith. His wisdom is a revelation of direction for our daily lives. See Proverbs 3 and 6 He promises to direct our past then Psalms 16 and 11 it says he will show us the path!#3 Divine Deliverance*Read James 1:17 (KJV) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.Q. How?(Read James 1:17 and 18)*Read James 4:7-10 (KJV) Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. [8] Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. [9] Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. [10] Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.Decree I take God of His Word! He will do what he said! I refuse double-mindedness. I will not be ruled by the outside but led and empowered from the inside!Closing Illustration: Starbucks has over 170,000 varieties Support the show

Have you seen that same issue in the church over the last few decades? Or anything close to it? Explain. Read Eph. 4:1-6. “You're on the same team,” was a big point in the sermon. Why is it so difficult to remember this in moments of conflict? Who is your real enemy? Is it your friends and family? Is it fellow believers? If not, how can you transfer your anger and indifference away from them, and onto your real enemy? What is your common identity and purpose with other disciples of Jesus? Read James 4:1. What would you specifically say makes you quarrel the most? (What triggers you or makes you most mad so that you fight?) In John 17, when Jesus was praying in the garden just before he went to the cross, his #1 prayer for His followers was that they would be one. That they would be unified. Clearly... this is VERY important to Jesus. What are a few practical ways you can pursue unity with other believers? Close in prayer asking that God would unify your Together group, our church, our marriages, our families, and our friends. LUKE 18:1-8 1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.' 4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don't fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually come and attack me!'” 6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?” FROM THE LESSON Book about Fatih - Salvation By Allegiance Alone by Matthew Bates The Fatih Question - his question in verse 8 is "not asked for the purpose of speculation but for the purpose of self-examination." Importance of Faith - "Jesus has more regard for faith than for anything else the earth can yield him." Charles Spurgeon Misconceptions About Faith: 1 Faith is NOT a leap in the dark 2 Faith is NOT the opposite of works 3 Faith is NOT having a positive mindset 4 Faith is NOT a decision to just believe DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Ice Breaker: Do you have a favorite Rocky movie (or a favorite scene) or do you have a Rocky story from your life you could share with your group? 1 Read again Luke 18:1-8. Discuss the widow of this parable as an illustration of the kind of faith that the Son of Man will be looking for upon His return.  2 Would you describe your faith as more of a leap into the unknown or a decision grounded in solid reasoning and substantial proof? 3 Read James 2:26. How has this verse helped you think about the relationship of faith and works? 4 Are you more of a optimist, pessimist, or a realist? What is the difference between having a positive mindset and having faith? 5 Belief has often been reduced to nothing more than mental agreement. Discuss the difference between this kind of belief and the belief of Scripture.

We read today of the triumphant arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem and the adulation that the ordinary people gave him, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” [Matt. 21 v.9] “The whole city was stirred up …” [v.10]      We pondered the comparison of this with his return to earth. What is, we wondered, the answer to the question Jesus posed at the end of another parable, “…when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” [Luke 18 v.8]      The focus of our thinking, after reading today's chapter, was in understanding the attitude of mind he will be looking to see.  From v.33-45 we read his parable of the tenants in the vineyard – the lesson he was teaching is clear.     The Jewish nation up to that time had had the responsibility of looking after God's vineyard – but they had failed their responsibilities.  After listening to this parable “they perceived he was speaking about them” [v.45] and so, in their generation the parable of their failure as tenants of God's vineyard was fulfilled – “He will put those wretches to a miserable death” [v41], Forty years later Jerusalem, its Temple and the nation were no more.       But Jesus added: “and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits …”  And so, after Jesus left the earth his disciples set about fulfilling this, their role – and in their generation succeeded, greatly helped when Christ called Paul to be an apostle.  But most in the generations that followed fell into the same trap of ‘self-importance' as the Priests had done. However, history shows there was renewed zeal and Christ-mindedness among those striving to be worthy “tenants” when God's word was printed for all to read .     But nowadays?  Are today's tenants in God's vineyard any better than those against whom Jesus told this parable? The kingdom is only for those “people producing its fruits” [v.43] the rest “will be broken to pieces” [v.44] when he comes!  It will be too late then to realise they have not kept “the narrow way.”   We prove we are on the right path, serving the LORD in his vineyard when we produce the right kind of fruit and profess the same message of hope Jesus taught – also show we have taken his character into our hearts and made it ours. Read James 3 v.12-18.

(see Genesis 4) What does their story teach usabout human nature after The Fall once sin entered the world?4. Read 1 John 3: 15 and Matthew 5: 21-22. How do these verses influencethe way we understand the 6th Commandment?5. What drives people to commit murder? Read James 4: 2 and look up the7 deadly sins. How do these help you understand the slippery slope of sinthat can lead to murder?6. Read Matthew 15: 18-20. How does this passage, as well as Matthew 5:21-22, help us to better understand the 6th Commandment? Can webreak the 6th Commandment without literally killing someone?7. Is it possible to disrespect, devalue, dehumanize and even destroyothers with our words and attitudes? If so, how might that behavior be aviolation of the 6th Commandment?8. Read Luke 9: 52-55. Why did the disciple want to destroy (kill) people inthe Samaritan village? How do we in the church sometimes make thesame mistake as the disciples?9. Read Mark 9: 38-41. What were the disciples upset about? How doesthat relate to the church today? What would Jesus have us do?10. Will you commit to being invitational, using the tools provided (yard signs, window clings, cards), and treating everyone as a person of sacred worth?Does anything about this scare you? If so, what/why?Prayer for the Week:Almighty God, we thank you for creating us in your image. Remind us that weare all persons of sacred worth, even though sin has distorted your image inall of us. Help us to truly respect and love one another and work together toadvance your kingdom here on earth. Forgive us for the times we devalue anddehumanize others with our harsh words and judgmental attitudes. Help us tosee others as you see them and share your love with them as you love us. Helpus to be invitational to everyone, knowing that if we all reach the ones we'recalled to reach, we'll reach them all. We pray all of this in the name of the Onewho makes all things possible, our Risen Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ, wholives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever.Amen.

A personal example of when I encountered an unsafe condition is from when I was brand new in industrial water treatment and was being trained on boiler inspections.  My manager and I were just about to enter the mud drum of a watertube boiler when steam started coming out of the manhole. My manager and the plant manager both looked at each other and were a little white in the face. An operator had blowndown one of the nearby boilers, and steam had backed up into the one we were literally just about to enter.  If we had climbed in just a little sooner, we could have suffered steam burns and worse.  Neither lockout/tagout nor proper communication had been conducted. Lessons were learned quickly very early in my career. I've heard stories of people dying in confined spaces due to the space being filled with nitrogen or argon.  Proper confined space entry procedures had neither been established nor conducted.  I've heard stories about water hammer blowing elbows, valves, etc. apart and injuring people.  I once had a colleague who had live steam blown inside his work boot.  Never have I ever seen blisters that big in my life.  I'm sure too many of you may have scary stories to tell as well. So please, today and every day, think about the safety of yourself and those around you.  Your safety matters to you, your family, your coworkers, and your colleagues.  Your safety matters to both Trace and me as well.    2024 Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! READ: James 5:16-18; Hebrews 4:16; Acts 10:34   MEDITATE: God answers prayers. While our prayers may not be like Elijah's, God wants us to spend time with him and honestly share our requests, but, are your prayers more of a “to do list” for God? Or are they authentic conversations with your Lord and Savior, who wants what's best for you?   PRAY: God, at times I come to you more with my requests than to spend time with you. As my Heavenly Father, I know you want more for me than I can imagine. As I spend time with you, change my heart from my desires to what you desire for me and my life.   Need prayer? Journey Church Sunday Worship Gathering Audio - Bozeman, Montana

Brian Priebe | Executive Pastor | December 17, 2023 Genesis 12:2 (NIV)“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” Genesis 12:10-13 (NIV)Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.” Genesis 15:5b-6 (NIV)“Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Genesis 16:1-2, 4a (NIV)Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”Abram agreed to what Sarai said. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. Two Main Areas of Control: Control of People Control of Environment Genesis 22:1-3 (NIV)Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”“Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. Genesis 22:6-8 (NIV)Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. James 4:13-16 (NIV)Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. Reflection Questions: 1. Read Genesis 22:1-18. Discuss Abraham's trust in God's provision in challenging circumstances.2. Share the areas of your life where controlling your own plan is easier than trusting God's plan.3. Read James 4:13-16. What is James' criticism and his expectation for how we go about day to day?4. Of the idols discussed in this series (money, comfort, relationships, reputation and control), which is the area you identify the most challenging for you? God's love is much easier to recognize when we get past our sense of entitlement. Entitlement writes off the ways God shows us His love as the bare minimum. We might not say it, but deep in our hearts, many of us think God owes us food, shelter, water, health, money, and life. In reality, He owes us nothing...but gives us everything because of His love.   Read: James 1:17; Numbers 11:1–33; 1 Corinthians 10:9–13   If you feel led, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to UN-ASSOCIATED HERE.   Bible Study Sign up: https://forms.gle/qqukxBcKqpFtpqEb8   Submit a Question of a Topic Suggestion: https://www.un-associated.com/askchurchboy/

Big Idea: It doesn't matter how fast you travel down the wrong road! Genesis 16: 1-16 1. Hurry won't accelerate God's timeline. Genesis 16: 1-5 Abram's wife, Sarai, had not borne any children for him, but she owned an Egyptian slave named Hagar. Sarai said to Abram, “Since the Lord has prevented me from bearing children, go to my slave; perhaps through her I can build a family.” And Abram agreed to what Sarai said. So Abram's wife, Sarai, took Hagar, her Egyptian slave, and gave her to her husband, Abram, as a wife for him. This happened after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan ten years. He slept with Hagar, and she became pregnant. When she saw that she was pregnant, her mistress became contemptible to her. Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for my suffering! I put my slave in your arms, and when she saw that she was pregnant, I became contemptible to her. May the Lord judge between me and you.” 2. Fury won't alter God's plan. Genesis 16: 6-10 Abram replied to Sarai, “Here, your slave is in your power; do whatever you want with her.” Then Sarai mistreated her so much that she ran away from her. The angel of the Lord found her by a spring in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. He said, “Hagar, slave of Sarai, where have you come from and where are you going?” She replied, “I'm running away from my mistress Sarai.” The angel of the Lord said to her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority.” The angel of the Lord said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, and they will be too many to count.” 3. Worry won't change your circumstances. Genesis 16: 11-16 The angel of the Lord said to her, “You have conceived and will have a son. You will name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard your cry of affliction. This man will be like a wild donkey. His hand will be against everyone, and everyone's hand will be against him; he will settle near all his relatives.” So she named the Lord who spoke to her: “You are El-roi,” for she said, “In this place, have I actually seen the one who sees me?” That is why the well is called Beer-lahai-roi. It is between Kadesh and Bered. So Hagar gave birth to Abram's son, and Abram named his son (whom Hagar bore) Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him. Next Steps: BELIEVE: I need Jesus to change my heart today. BECOME: I will wait for the Lord's best this week. BE SENT: I will share my struggles with someone this week. Discussion Questions: What is the longest promise you've waited for? On a scale of 1-10, how easy is it for you to wait for God to answer your prayers? Did you worry about something yesterday that never came to pass? Is there an area of your faith that you're struggling with today? Read James 1:19-20.  How often do you wrestle with anger? Since God gets angry throughout the Bible, what is different from human anger and God's anger? Thank God for his patience with you this week.
