In 2026, the term direct-to-consumer, or DTC, has become somewhat of a pejorative within the retail startups ecosystem. Enter: “DTC 3.0,” or what's dubbed as the most sustainable and profitable version of the model to date. The term was popularized last year after an X post by Cody Plofker, the CEO of Jones Road Beauty, though a debate has emerged on what the phrase entails. On this week's episode of the Modern Retail Podcast, senior reporter Gabriela Barkho is joined by two veterans of the DTC landscape who started their brands in the 2010s. Nate Checketts, co-founder and CEO of Rhone, and Melissa Mash, co-founder and CEO of Dagne Dover, argue that the term DTC, in and of itself, is antiquated. The two also weigh the pros and cons of being an early player in the "DTC boom," and their approaches to raising venture capital and building more sustainable brands. This week's episode discusses: How do founders characterize the different phases of DTC? A look back at being part of the DTC 1.0 wave, then navigating the next two phases amid increased challenges.  How events like the Covid-19 pandemic and tariffs helped shape the DTC channel. Building an enduring brand through a slower, more sustainable growth model.

Long before we consciously think about it, we're already making choices. How much to push. When to stay quiet. What feels possible — and what feels off-limits. Most of those decisions aren't random. They're guided by beliefs we've been carrying for years, often without realizing where they came from. This episode of That Greenwich Life is an invitation to slow down and examine those beliefs — especially the ones LIMITING us. So many of the limits we accept as “just the way things are” aren't rooted in truth at all. They're inherited, learned, and reinforced until they feel immovable. But they don't have to be.My guest, Sarah Sadie Newett, is the founder of SSN, an award-winning movement practice studio in Westport that has built a deeply devoted community of people who return week after week — not just for physical results, but for transformation. She has decades of professional experience as a dancer and aerialist and has performed alongside artists including Lady Gaga, The Roots, and Lil' Kim. She has collaborated with major wellness and fashion brands such as Max Mara, Alo Yoga, Rhone, and Beyond Yoga. Through movement and her own journey of sobriety, Sarah helps people challenge long-held assumptions about their bodies and abilities, creating space for confidence, trust, and possibility. Whether working with athletes, creatives, mothers, or high-performing professionals, her clients consistently leave feeling capable of far more than they imagined. This episode is about more than physical flexibility or strength. It's about what becomes possible when beliefs change — not just in thought, but in practice. Because when your beliefs evolve, the way you move through your life evolves with them.Thank You to Our Sponsors: • RMA of New York — our Season 2 Presenting Sponsor and leading fertility care provider • Jack Rabbits Gymnastics and Soccer Club — a beloved children's movement and enrichment space helping kids build confidence, coordination, and joy through play • Room for Paws Pet Resort — a trusted, full-service pet resort providing exceptional care and peace of mind for families and their furry family membersLet's Connect! If this episode inspired you, please follow, rate, and review That Greenwich Life so more women can find these conversations. Its' syrah-o'clock somewhere and the Wine Thieves are back to unlock the secrets of the northern Rhone's largest appellation where syrah takes many shapes: Crozes-Hermitage. But it's really a tale of two crozes, two very distinct parts. There's what growers refer to as the northern half of Crozes-Hermitage to the north of the imposing hill of Hermitage itself – where it is narrower, cooler, and higher, with steep granitic slopes. That hard magmatic stone in all its glory makes for striking syrah. In the south, it is windier, flatter, drier, and warmer, with decidedly more Mediterranean influence, and alluvial, stone-covered plains where much of the appellation's volume originates, featuring mainly compelling, fruit-forward styles of syrah. Joining us from Tain-l'Hermitage, our guests Daphné Chave and David Combier  are part of the rising ‘new generation' of younger wine producers in the region, carrying forward the legacy of their parents. Daphné is the next generation at the helm of her family's Domaine Yann Chave. She recently earned a degree in winemaking and has worked at some of the wolds great wineries, and is now exploring new directions as she gradually takes more control of the estate. David is a fourth-generation organic farmer and co-owner of Domaine Combier, pioneers of organic viticulture in Crozes-Hermitage since the 1970s. The Domaine spans 60 hectares, with the majority in the Crozes-Hermitage AOC, covering the full spectrum of the appellation from the exposed granite soils in the north to the clay-limestone vineyards of the south. We'll discuss how their experiences abroad have influenced their winemaking, how the variety of syrah reflects its terroir in its wine, recent challenges affecting the variety in the northern Rhone and of course, a word on the whites – Marsanne and roussane of the appellation and its rising demand among other topics in this Wine Thieves reboot episode! Join us with a glass of Crozes Hermitage (search winealign.com for our top picks from the region) and follow along.  This episode was made with the support of Interprofessionnellede l'Appellation Crozes-Hermitage.

368: Why did the Rhone region ban flying saucers? Matt Walls reveals the story behind why that rule still exists

Which French wine region banned flying saucers from landing in its vineyards and why is the rule still there? How did the devastating February 1956 frost reshape the southern Rhône into the vineyard landscape we know today? What sets the northern Rhone apart from the south in terms of grapes and winemaking style? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Matt Walls, author of The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to the Rhone Valley. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Giveaway Two of you are going to win a copy of Matt Walls' terrific new book, The Smart Traveller's Wine Guide to the Rhone Valley. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights How did a family picnic become a memorable introduction to the northern Rhone? How did a visit to a small producer in Crozes Hermitage turn into an unforgettable travel mishap? Why does Châteauneuf du Pape have a rule specifically forbidding the landing of flying saucers in vineyards? How is the Rhone Valley laid out geographically and what distinguishes the northern Rhone from the southern Rhone? How much wine does the Rhone produce each year compared to other regions in France? What was the moment that made Matt fall in love with Hermitage wines? What was it like for Matt to move his family from London to a village near Avignon? How does the culture of Rhone winemakers differ from regions like Bordeaux or Champagne? What practical advice does Matt have for getting the most out of visits to Rhone wineries? What makes The Smart Traveler's Wine Guide to the Rhone Valley different from other wine books? What unexpected part of his research led Matt to fall in love with Lyon?   Key Takeaways Within the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the cahiers des charges, which is basically the rulebook on how you're allowed to make wine within the appellation, has a statement that says, "Winemakers may not use their vineyards to land flying saucers." This was put in in the 1960s, when there was a big panic about flying saucers and little green men. I think it's easier just to leave it there than to go through the whole rigmarole for getting it removed. The devastating February 1956 frost was a turning point in how people lived, worked, and farmed in the southern Rhone. Before that point, it was very much a kind of polycultural land. Individual estates would have olives, grapevines, fig trees, carrots, wheat, and so it was a mixed agriculture. But after 1956, this really wiped out the olive trees. People needed something that would give them a crop immediately in order for them to survive and chose grapevines. One of the big differences between the northern Rhone and the southern Rhone is that the northern Rhone, they only use one red grape variety, which is Syrah. In the south, they have a whole smorgasbord of different grape varieties and the culture there is to blend. Also they have quite a single-vineyard way of working. The estates tend to be very small in the northern Rhone compared to the southern Rhone.   About Matt Walls Matt Walls is an award-winning freelance wine writer, author and consultant who contributes to various UK and international publications such as Club Oenologique and Decanter, where he is a contributing editor. He also judges wine and food competitions, develops wine apps and presents trade and consumer tastings. Welcome to Wine Road, hosted by Marcy Gordon and Beth Costa. Thanks to Ron Rubin and River Road Family Vineyards for supporting the podcast. Check out RiverRoadVineyards.com for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. (0:49 - 1:37) Episode 239 features Jacob Mounts, Winery and Vineyard Manager at Mounts Family Winery. Jacob, 25, represents the new generation of winemakers. His mother suggested he join the show to share insights from a younger perspective. (1:38 - 2:48) Jacob introduces the 2022 Italian Affair, a blend of Barbera and Teroldego. The unique combination offers juiciness and balance. The name stems from his father's decision to plant Italian varietals, which his mother jokingly called "cheating" on their Rhone roots. (2:49 - 5:25) Mounts Family Winery grows 35 varietals, including Rhone, Italian, Spanish, and Bordeaux grapes. Jacob explains the importance of experimenting with heat-tolerant varietals like Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional to adapt to climate change and appeal to younger wine drinkers. (5:26 - 7:08) Jacob emphasizes the importance of balance in winemaking, crediting his father's skill. He shares his passion for structured wines and his desire to expand the winery's production. (7:09 - 9:14) Jacob reflects on leaving the wine industry at 18 to explore other careers, including mechanics and commercial fishing in Alaska. His time away gave him a renewed appreciation for winemaking and the natural beauty of vineyards. (9:15 - 12:21) Jacob discusses the challenges of engaging younger wine drinkers, citing high tasting fees and lack of approachability. He advocates for making wine fun and accessible, encouraging people to enjoy it however they like. (12:22 - 14:45) The conversation shifts to the importance of storytelling in wine. Jacob believes sharing the history and personal stories behind a bottle creates a deeper connection for consumers, especially younger generations. (14:46 - 18:07) Jacob shares how introducing wine to friends in Alaska sparked their interest. He highlights the role of peer influence in making wine more appealing to younger audiences. (18:08 - 21:06) Jacob talks about his family's Rhone roots and their Viognier, which expresses stone fruit and honeysuckle notes. He also praises Grenache and Cab Franc as standout varietals in their portfolio. (21:07 - 24:00) Mounts Family Winery is open for tastings by appointment during the week and walk-ins on weekends. Jacob and his mother personally host tastings, offering a welcoming and intimate experience. (24:01 - 28:07) Jacob shares his passion for brandy and distilled spirits, mentioning his first barrel of brandy aging for 10 years. He enjoys exploring local artisanal producers and learning from their craft. (28:08 - 33:32) The hosts praise the winery's scenic location and encourage listeners to visit. Jacob highlights their new label designs, which represent their evolving portfolio. (33:33 - 37:53) The discussion touches on the beauty of Sonoma County year-round and the importance of slowing down to enjoy the scenery. Jacob expresses gratitude for being part of the wine community. (37:54 - 42:07) Beth promotes upcoming Wine Road events, including Winter Wineland and the Holiday Wine Trail, which supports the Redwood Empire Food Bank. She encourages listeners to explore the auction on wineroad.com. (42:08 - 44:32) Jacob thanks the hosts for the opportunity to share his story. The hosts commend his passion and authenticity, encouraging him to continue inspiring younger generations.   Links: River Road Family Vineyards & Winery Mounts Family Winery Winter Wineland Holiday Wine Trail + Market Redwood Empire Food Bank

Francesco Gatti is the Co-founder and CEO of Opensend, a data company for e-commerce brands that converts anonymous visitors into leads. The company works with brands, including TrueClassic, OatsOvernight, Benchmade, AlexaderWang, and Rhone. With over a decade of digital marketing experience, Francesco held roles at companies, including VOLTN, Burrata House, Herb, and Grata.  In this episode… Most brands invest heavily in driving website traffic, yet the majority of visitors stay invisible and never convert. How can companies uncover these hidden audiences and turn them into engaged customers without invading their privacy? According to identity resolution and data-driven marketing expert Francesco Gatti, brands can recognize high-intent visitors and nurture them into buyers by analyzing on-site behavior — like reading product details or checking contact pages — to gauge purchase readiness. He recommends filling ad platforms with rich, accurate data to improve look-alike audiences and cut acquisition costs. By combining quality data with careful personalization, companies can elevate ROI while respecting consumer trust. In this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris chats with Opensend Co-founder and CEO Francesco Gatti about turning anonymous traffic into known, marketable relationships. Francesco explains how high-intent signals reveal purchase readiness, why rich data strengthens Meta ad performance, and how AI-driven cohort analysis powers personalized ad creative.

New ‘Sode Glitter Ledger;  Its Fashion Week where DATS are ala mode on the cover of Vogue. Ipso facto I shall request filing for a DAT all over my body and wrap it in a NVIDIA oil titanium put leveraged on Cote du Rhone and chocolate sprinkles.  What's a DAT you may ask. Well I'm so glad you did. I turned to my psychiatrist Dr. Seuss, who has a confusing following as a Nazi Bitcoin Maximalist. But I digress, he requested I open up The CAT in the DAT and read on page 14. “It is fun to have fun But you have to know how. That is what the cat said. Then he fell on his head!” -"They are tame. Oh, so tame! They have come here to play. They will give you some fun On this wet, wet, wet day."Oh, the things they will bump! Oh, the things they will hit! Should we tell her about it? Now, what SHOULD we do? Well. What would You do If your mother asked You?Inspired but confused, I realized that $375 session that had gone to waste could have spent on Bitcoin or quayludes. I then asked my dearest friend Fyre Festival Founder Billy McFarland Together with my bedazzled baccarat magnifying glass his Sharpei intern, we both determined that DATS are cute companies that purchase tokens on their balance sheets to capitalize on adderal spiked price appreciation and then they subsequently dump it in the pubelle. Thats french for garbage can. I am in. Oh the things you can think when you think about Seuss!Alas, Billy and I are throwing a Cat in the DAT Conference on Hedera for Armani RIP. It will be held in Gstaad on a Green Mountain aptly named Galaxy.  But I digress. My guest today is the supremely wonderful Josh Sroge. I interviewed Josh so long ago that just about everything in this episode is now factually incorrect. Do not let this stop you from listening. As most of what I say in the present is wrong. Josh is almost as entertaining as I am so the interview is worth a listen if insider info Binance US water cooler alpha intrigues you. It does not me.  All I care about is Xanax and Private Jets and Hedera.  I really wanted to get Josh on the show because I have not had a guest without hair and I want a Hedera Grant so I can finance my 2nd home in Burkina Faso. I queried a critical question where I wanted Josh to determine the answer to who would win in an elegant bar fight between Bitcoin Maximalists, CZ, or Hedera Fanatics. Josh responded with the flair of a disgraced politician. Alas, Josh is a former aspiring local politician, whose campaign I laundered money through to finance purchasing a Birkin and a pack of cigs. I digress. Josh is a fascinating melange of the Old School Crypto Bros of yester year coupled with a New Yorker Roc Hudson charm sans homosexuality.  We met on a panel but I was not on it.  He lives in the Caymans for obvious reasons. He had a stint as the CFO slash CEO of Binance US  and currently serves as a Director of the Hedera Foundation. He fits my criteria of financial availability in a mate based on his resume. Thats french for resume. Josh agrees with me that sales is essentially about how thin you are.  The man has the charisma of someone who could sell you a timeshare on Jupiter and has had an enviable career in a space full of many individuals who have needed thousand dollar attorneys. Josh is welcome on Glitter anytime. It was the utmost pleasure. Support the show

For this episode, the Marys are on location with Rob Sinton, winemaker at El Dorado County's Starfield Vineyards. This is where the grapes meet the sky, as they say, thanks to high altitude vineyards reaching upwards of 2400 to 3000 feet in elevation. Here at Starfield Vineyards, you gaze at the vineyard views surrounded by evergreens in every direction. This mountain terroir gives El Dorado wines their distinct herbal and spicy flavor, or Sierra spice, as it's called in these parts, a flavor profile that makes them stand out among other California wines. We're so excited to be speaking with Rob Sinton at this gorgeous property set with lakes and miles of walking trails, where you can soak up the wine country experience and enjoy some darn good wines. Starfield is also the dream of Rob and his father Tom, whose love of wine led them on a quest to find the best place to grow Rhone and Italian varietals. Their search sent them into the Sierra Foothills and El Dorado County. Today Rob is not only making wine, he's reinventing wine labels using solargraphy, championing forgotten grapes, and even creating his own vermouths. We're sure that once you hear Rob's story, you'll want to plan a visit to this and other wineries in the mountainous El Dorado wine country.

We love stories like this. Two neighbors bond over their shared love of wine, make some in their garage, then decide to put in a vineyard. With no formal training but a passion for Rhone varietals, they pushed ahead. While walking their dogs, they “spied” on their neighbors' vineyards and gleaned information from friends and local wineries. The wines have purity and clarity to them, no over extraction or excessive oak treatment. “Our vineyards, located in the Middle Reach neighborhood of the Russian River Valley, just south of Healdsburg, are ideal for growing Rhone varietals. Benefitting from the effects of the river the AVA is famous for, we also see the largest diurnal temperature swings that provide richness and depth of flavor to our fruit without excessive sugars. Crux Winery is a Rhone specialist focused on crafting alluring wines made from meticulously nurtured fruit grown in our sustainably cultivated vineyards. Each bottle tells a story of the valley's terroir, the vintage, and the varietal.” [Ep 383] @cruxwinery Cruxwinery.com

Legacy in the wine trade is not guaranteed. Not every child wants to take on the wine trade. I have many stories of famed children of iconic brands setting out to carve their own path to only lnad back in this passionate business. Jason Haas of Tablas Creek came around a bit quicker. He saw what an honest glass of wine represents and is now the second generation owner of Tablas Creek. Jason Haas may be the only guest who can increase the world's acreage of a grape by 40% simply by planting half an acre. If that got your attention, prepare for a conversation filled with surprising truths about winemaking in Paso Robles, the deep roots of Tablas Creek, and the evolving landscape of California's wine industry. You'll learn how a partnership between the American Haas family and the French Perrins of Château de Beaucastel launched an early French “transplant” with a vision for Mediterranean grapes in California—long before it was fashionable. Jason offers an insider's perspective on why Paso Robles' sub-appellations are more expressive than those in Napa and how scientific mapping by UC Davis and Cal Poly replaced politics with terroir. You'll get an engrossing look at how this once rural, cowboy town is still shaped more by local families than by corporate interests, and why that matters for the wines—and the people—who make them. Jason also reveals how trends, from big brand Cabs chasing the Napa style to small-batch Rhône blends with true regional character, shape what's in your glass. If you've ever wondered what innovation actually means in wine—outside of quirky bottles and cans—Jason gives you a primer on farming organically and regeneratively, introducing grapes the world has nearly forgotten, and packaging that shrinks the industry's carbon footprint. You'll hear the untold story of California's Roan Ranger movement that started in a little Berkeley restaurant, and why camaraderie and shared purpose make Paso's wine community unique. Along the way, you'll discover why the best part of a Paso wine club might be the opportunity to bowl against your neighboring vintners' Little League teams—no cowboy hat required. 348: What's It Like Moving Your Family Thousands of Miles to Live in the Wine Region of Languedoc, France? Steve Hoffman Shares Stories

How can you create a life you don't need a vacation from? What can we learn from the French about slowing down, savoring meals, and making conversation the heart of gatherings? What's it like living in the “other southern France”? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Steve Hoffman, who has written an award-winning memoir called A Season for That: Lost and Found in the Other Southern France. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you are going to win a copy of Steve Hoffman's terrific new book, A Season for That: Lost and Found in the Other Southern France. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights What do tax preparation and writing have in common? What inspired Steve to write about the Languedoc, which he refers to as the other Southern France? What were the major hurdles to getting A Season for That published? How did Steve shift from an article to a book mindset? What helped Steve find the balance between writing beautifully and the need to move the story forward? What important lessons did Steve learn from his editor, respected cookbook author Francis Lam? What was it like to move across the world with two young children? Are there insights about French parenting and family life that Steve continues to apply? How did Steve choose the specific village he wanted to live in? How do vulnerability and curiosity help with cultural immersion?   Key Takeaways Steve says that we're often sold the idea that our lives are boring and that we need relief from our lives. He believes in leading a life that doesn't require evacuation. That your life itself, if you are careful about it and a little bit intentional about it, can be the thing that you want to dive into every day. Steve mentions Thanksgiving as one of the very few occasions where he and his family commit to slowing down and making conversation around the table, and a great meal. There was something about the French willingness to let conversation be the point and a way of passing time that was really refreshing. Steve settled in 2012 as a family for an extended fall semester in the Languedoc region, which he refers to as the other southern France, because it is, to some extent, the poor cousin of what most people think of as southern France, primarily Provence and the Côte d'Azur, the Riviera, which was extensively touristed and a lot of money got brought into that region. Peter Mayle, Princess Grace, and F. Scott Fitzgerald made it a wealthy playground. Languedoc is the portion of Mediterranean France to the west of the Rhone. So the Rhone divides the country in two, east of the Rhone is Provence, and the Riviera west of the Rhone is Languedoc and eventually Roussillon. He had the kinds of experiences he had because they weren't in the grips of a tourist haven.   About Steve Hoffman Steve Hoffman is a Minnesota tax preparer and food writer. His writing has won multiple national awards, including the 2019 James Beard M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award. He has been published in Food & Wine, The Washington Post, and The Minneapolis Star Tribune, among other publications. He shares one acre on Turtle Lake, in Shoreview, Minnesota, with his wife, Mary Jo, their elderly and entitled puggle, and roughly 80,000 honeybees.       To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/348.

Lululemon (LULU) reports earnings after the bell, and Likefolio's Megan Brantley walks through consumer sentiment data ahead of the results. “The bar is too high,” she argues, noting a continued decline in web visits. Smaller, niche players are taking their market share, particularly Rhone and Alo. She also thinks the demographics of the LULU customer are changing, both in age and geography.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – / schwabnetwork Follow us on Facebook – / schwabnetwork Follow us on LinkedIn - / schwab-network About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Megan Brantley from Likefolio shares their consumer sentiment data on Lululemon (LULU), which reports earnings next Thursday. She notes that unique visits have fallen as niche and upstart brands like Rhone and Fabletics compete with LULU. Megan argues that they've “lost touch” with what their consumers want with failed product launches, and a lack of innovation is hurting the company. However, she notes that their data does not include Lululemon's international growth.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about
