The Fretless guest on The Stew. Karrnnel Sawitsky and Trent Freeman - one-half of The Fretless join us. Saturday in the first hour. Their album - Glass Wing is brilliant. With 3 songs cowritten and sung by Madeleine Roger. Classically trained, raised on rock, jazz, blues, folk and heritage roots, they take all those influences and combine them into a sound unlike any other group. They take 100 year old shanty's and reshape the song without losing the original melody so it can last another 100 years. In Glass Wing, they write all their own tunes. Three co-written with Madeleine Roger. There is such joy in hearing violins, violas and cellos driving the beat where normally the drums and bass would be. Impressive my friends. Very impressive. Have a listen to Pipe Dreams! The Queen Nancy - named after a car and a make-believe BC Ferry. Icarus - a Madeleine beauty Or the lead track Lost Lake. This marks a new chapter The Fretless. With Lights, sound and stage design created especially for this album, these songs and this tour. I've been waiting for new music from Winnipeg's Madeleine Roger for four years. That's how long it's been since I discovered her voice, playing and gifted songwriting. Maddy took a solo career detour through the stellar chops of The Fretless. They needed an exceptional vocalist who understood and was comfortable with, classical music. Madeleine needed a different “band” to shine with. Perfect! So here we are in early September and both artists are releasing new albums. Madeleine has just released NERVE a new album filled with tales of lost love and found freedoms. Produced by Josh Kaufman (Anais Mitchell, Bonnie Light Horseman) Recorded in four days. They threw away the headphones and sat 8 feet apart..making music. There are actually four extra songs waiting to be released. I am here to state – in my opinion - an exceptional new star has risen – her name is Madeleine Roger. Enjoy the complete interview and the music included. www.madeleineroger.com

MADELEINE ROGER and LOGAN MCKILLOP stop by for an afternoon chat in Guelph, taking a break from their extensive touring to drink some tea and debrief. These two beams of light discuss the majesty of Manitoba wilderness, touring with an abundance of waffles, and debating guitar panning choices with your family at the dinner table. We listen to Madeleine Roger’s “60 Years More” (off her record Cottonwood, out now) and Logan McKillop’s “Mother’s Love” (off his forthcoming record Anchorless). We learn how catching frogs is really a bad idea, touring with a kayak is crazy but wonderful, and the distinction between being lonely and being alone. Check out Madeleine and Logan’s websites for all the good info: madeleineroger.com / loganmckillop.com.
Banjo toting roots singer-songwriter Carly Dow has just released her second album “Comet”. More celestial in tone than her earthy debut “Ingrained”, Carly is still deeply connected to nature and the wildness that lives amongst us - and within us, on ten new songs written at her mostly off the grid, backwoods retreat in the wilds of Manitoba. The new album, co-produced with Matt Filopoulus, features Carly Dow on her signature clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar with support from some fine Winnipeg based musicians including Matt Filopoulus on electric guitar, pedal steel and dobro; Murray Jewett and Julian Bradford (strings) and Jeremy Rusu (accordion) with harmony vocals from Madeleine Roger and Logan McKillop. Carly Dow sat down with Folk Roots Radio at Folk Music Ontario to chat about the new album. For more information about the music of Carly Dow, visit http://carlydowmusic.com. Music: Carly Dow “Sunlight Remembers”, “Tiger’s Eye” and “Cut & Run” from “Comet” (2018, Self).
Winnipeg singer-songwriter Madeleine Roger released a fabulous album "Fairweather" in 2015 with her twin brother Lucas as part of the contemporary folk duo Roger Roger. Since that time, Lucas has decided to take a break from writing and performing to focus on his work as a luthier with Beardsell Guitars, allowing Madeleine to develop her own career as a solo artist. Madeleine Roger's debut solo album "Cottonwood" features songs, written at home in Winnipeg and while on retreat at the family backwoods cottage, that reflect a female perspective on life and music. The album was produced with Lloyd Peterson (The Wailin' Jenny's, The Weakerthans, James Keelaghan) at Paintbox Recording in Winnipeg with true gender parity and equality a focus of the recording process. Madeleine Roger sat down with Folk Roots Radio at the 2018 Folk Music Ontario conference to chat about the new album. For more information about Madeleine Roger, visit madeleineroger.com. Music: Madeleine Roger "60 Years More", "Cottonwood" and "Soldier Song" from "Cottonwood" (2018, Self).
Winnipeg based singer-songwriter Madeleine Roger joins us on Episode 400 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about her debut solo album “Cottonwood”. Madeline produced a fabulous album “Fairweather” in 2016 with her twin brother Lucas - as duo Roger Roger. As Luke Roger has now decided to step away from writing and performing to focus on his work as a luthier, Madeleine is now forging ahead with her own solo career. Madeleine Roger is a great interview, and this new conversation is no exception. During our chat, Madeleine chats about the making of the new album, the importance of achieving gender balance and equality in the studio, the live experience, and why Winnipeg has such a great music scene. It’s a great interview - definitely well-worth sticking around for. We also check out more of the new music we’ve received including new releases from Georgian Bay, Sam Loaker, Lennie Gallant, Mike T. Kerr, Braden Gates, Ken Tizzard and Tragedy Ann.
