Send us a textOn nearly every previous episode of You, Me and An Album, Al has invited a guest to introduce him to one album he doesn't know well (or at all), but this week's guest talks about seven of his favorite albums. Mike Montgomery, who owns Candyland Recording Studio in Dayton, Kentucky, and is a member of R.Ring and Ampline, suggested 11 possible albums to discuss on this episode, but he and Al weren't able to narrow the list down. So Mike talks about seven of those albums (noted in the rundown below). Not only were they unable to settle on one album from Mike's list, but Mike also suggested that Al introduce him to some of his favorite albums. From Al's short list of eight albums, he decided to discuss three of them on this episode, bringing the total albums featured up to an even 10.Mike explains how his love of skateboarding led him down a musical rabbit hole that ultimately brought him to several of the albums on his list. Al talks about his tendency to immerse himself in a single artist's discography, and how that led him to discover several of the albums that made his short list.Mike also discusses his Nervous Verbs solo project and the debut Nervous Verbs album Pony Coughing, which will be out on February 28. He explains why he decided to not record his Nervous Verbs songs with his other bands and talks about some of the musicians he collaborated with for this project. There are several places to keep up with Mike and his bands on Instagram, and they're all worth a follow!@candyland_recording_studio@nervousverbs@r.ringsings@amplinegramAl is on Bluesky at @almelchior.bsky.social. "Run With Me" The Ontario-born Bry Webb formed the underground outfit The Constantines out of the ashes of the emo band Shoulder in 1999. With their jagged guitars, tribal drums, snarling bass lines and Webb's ferocious vocals along with his poetic lyrics, The Guelph-based Constantines were one of those rare bands that seemed to arrive fully formed. From 2004 to 2008, the Juno-award nominated Constantines put out four brilliant albums--their eponymous debut, Shine A Light, Tournament Of Hearts and Kensington Heights. And there's not a false note to be found anywhere--the syncopated rhythms, musical intensity and the sheer muscle and heart that powered every song brought to mind everyone from Fugazi to the Minutemen to The Replacements. This is a partial list of their highlights; they toured with The Tragically Hip and The Weakerthans, were signed to Sub Pop, played Lollapallooza, the Vancouver Olympics and a gig at the legendary Massey Hall. With the band on hiatus, Webb formed a band called The Harborcoats and put out three brilliant solo albums--Free Will, Provider and Run With Me. Redolent with raw intimacy, sensitivity, and poetic grace, Webb's solo work rings with as much conviction as his work with The Constantines. He's been nominated for a Genie Award, he contributed a track to This American Life and he sang back-up on Feist's album Metals. I can't say enough about this guy--he's a towering force and whether he's belting out anthems or staying low in the pocket to deliver some of the most stirring acoustic numbers you've ever heard, Bry Webb is a giant talent who is one of my all-time favorites. His body of work means everything to me and his presence on this show is nothing short of humbling. And he's one of the nicest dudes ever. www.brywebb.com (http://www.brywebb.com) www.brywebb.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers IG: @emberspodcast Bluesky: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Jesse Gander grew up playing music as a teen in the band d.b.s. (1992-2001) in North Vancouver. He went on to play in numerous other bands, currently Uptights. He started recording bands while still a teenager and has done music production for over 500 bands and artists from around the world. Seylynn Hall was a community recreation centre in North Vancouver which held shows for about fifteen years starting in 1996. The last shows was in 2009, though a couple of one off shows happened after that. It was the centre of a diy punk scene for those years, mostly run by youth for youth. Other venues mentioned: The South Wall was a small room in the Lonsdale Recreation Centre which held youth music shows for several years in the 1990s. Bands discussed: Brand New Unit, Fugazi, Reserve 34, Strain, AFI, The Weakerthans, DOA, the Evaporators, Middle-aged Queers, The Cost, Pansy Division, Tranzmitors. This episode features the following songs: d.b.s.: Way Out from Catch 22 (1993) d.b.s.: Your Apathy is Killing the Both of Us from Live At Seylynn Hall. Last Show Evah! (2001) Reserve 34: Estivation from Reserve 34
Ben Hughes wrote and recorded a solo record back in 2013 and didn't want to release it under his own name. So, he called the project NIGHT WINDOWS to pay homage to one of his all-time favorite bands, The Weakerthans. This did two very important things: (1) allowed him the freedom to be a band or a solo artist, or both at the same time (2) gave him a unique name to release music under - there are a surprising amount of people with the same name, and it feels like half of them are active musicians. Ben brings us on a journey through his life surrounded by music, its healing powers and destruction. Thanks for listening!!! This week, we welcome Jeremy Bolm (Touche Amore, The First Ever Podcast) onto the pod to discuss Canadian indie rock heroes The Weakerthans. We get into why people love them, what their impact has been on modern punk music, whether they're emo and much more!
For the past several weeks, Steven and Ian have planned to do a mailbag segment on the show. But they always end up yapping for too long, and the segment inevitably ends up getting bumped. This week, the guys finally rectified the situation by addressing some emails from their loyal listeners. What do Indiecast listeners want to know about? Our first letter concerns the matter of seated shows vs. standing-room only shows, and which is preferable (16:55). You can probably guess what the 40something-year-old hosts of Indiecast think about this, though Steven makes a case for seated shows providing "guaranteed real estate" that you don't have to defend if you leave temporarily to get a beer or go to the bathroom. From there, Steven and Ian finally address the email about The Weakerthans, and give their opinion on the beloved Canadian band (25:54). They also talk about their favorite indie-rock bassists of the last 25 years (39:08), and the legacy of the indie-folk band Beirut (47:24).In Recommendation Corner (56:39), Ian talks about the Abe Vigoda offshoot Cupid & Psyche while Steven recommends the vibe-y Chicago rock act Squirrel Flower.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 159 here and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can submit questions for Steve and Ian at indiecastmailbag@gmail.com, and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest news. From 1990 to 2001, while the popular radio waves were consumed with the buzz of grunge and alternative rock, Winnipeg managed to craft a unique underground music scene that moved in its own direction. At once informed by their predecessors and stubbornly determined to create the art that they wanted to see made, bands like Kittens, Propagandhi, and the Weakerthans built on this foundation and ultimately found success beyond the Perimeter Highway, though they always remained true to the values and defiant spirit that first allowed them to crawl up from the muddy banks of the Red River. Wild and uninhibited, it's a sound and a time that has captivated author Sheldon Birnie since his first forays into the turgid waters of the city's underground during his family's yearly summer pilgrimages across the prairie from their home in BC. Now firmly entrenched in the city, Birnie has gone to painstaking lengths to document one of the most important decades in Winnipeg's musical history. Through detailed research and extensive interviews, Missing Like Teeth: An Oral History of Winnipeg Underground Rock, 1900-2001 (Eternal Cavalier Press, 2015) paints a vivid picture of the Heart of the Continent and the characters that inhabited its tiny stages from 1990 to 2001. Kids, 90s emo ain't your geriatric millennials' emo. This is Gen X giving the world its greatest contribution to popular culture this side of The Simpsons. The 90s were the golden age for guitar-based bands made up of (mostly) dudes that were in touch with their feelings, and had an undeniable urge to scream about it or at least put their unique spin on songs about love and youthful exuberance. The ever-knowledgeable Ryan Stockstad helps ATTT wrap up our conversation about this particular place, time, genre and subgenre that spawned massive successes in the following decade.
