The young Russian pianist Alexander Malofeev has just released his first album for Sony Classical. 'Forgotten Melodies' takes its name from the work by Nikolai Medtner which appears on the recording, alongside pieces by Glinka, Rachmaninov and Glazunov. The theme that links all four composers is that they were all born in Russia, but died far from their country of birth. As well as Medtner's substantial work, Malofeev also plays Rachmaninov's Second Piano Sonata in its 1931 revised version. James Jolly caught up with Alexander Malofeev in Paris when the pianist was there as part of short European solo tour to talk about the new album, his repertoire and jumping in to replace Martha Argerich on a tour with the Rotterdam Philharmonic. We also talk about Buck's new band Kisser which is led by his partner, Germaine Dunes, his upcoming tour plans, five records he thinks everyone should own, a little food talk, and more.   -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein

From Trauma to Triumph: Kevin Steele Opens Up to Tom Alvarez, On the Aisle. Rock frontman Kevin Steele joins Tom Alvarez on the latest episode of his podcast for a conversation that goes far beyond music. Calling in from St. Petersburg, Florida, Steele discusses his first-ever solo album, One Thing Left to Do, set for release February 27. But what unfolds is more than an album preview — it's a story of survival, resilience, and rediscovered purpose. After decades leading Rocks Gang and The Mojo Gurus, Steele is stepping out on his own for the first time. He describes this project as the record he's always wanted to make. Co-produced with guitarist Billy Summer — whom Steele calls his “Cosmic Twin” — the album reflects his unfiltered creative voice. There were no label executives weighing in. No producer clashes. No compromises. The result is a raw blend of rock and roll infused with blues, glam, country, grit, and heart — a sound Steele says represents exactly who he is today. The conversation takes a deeply personal turn as Steele opens up about a life marked by unimaginable trauma. He reveals that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and suffered a brain bleed before undergoing surgery. Against daunting odds, he made a full recovery and returned to the studio with renewed clarity and determination. But his story of survival began long before that diagnosis. At just eight years old, Steele's mother was murdered. Years later, his father was convicted of orchestrating the crime. Growing up in the shadow of that tragedy shaped him in profound ways. Music, he says, became both refuge and lifeline.“I wanted to give some other kid the same escape music gave me,” Steele shares during one of the episode's most powerful moments.Throughout the podcast, Steele and Alvarez also dive into several tracks from One Thing Left to Do, exploring the stories and emotions behind the songs. Each track reflects a journey — from pain to perseverance, from trauma to triumph. What emerges is not just the story of a new album, but the portrait of an artist who has endured heartbreak, health scares, and hardship — and chosen to channel it all into creativity. One Thing Left to Do isn't simply a solo debut. It's a declaration: after everything he's survived, Kevin Steele still has music to make — and a story worth telling.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Although an unlikely origin for a bluegrass banjo player, New Zealand would offer BB her first introduction to the instrument, sparking a lifelong love and fascination. A world away from the heart of bluegrass, BB spent much of her childhood teaching herself the instrument, and through dedication and tenacity became New Zealand School of Music's first banjo student. Inspired by her New Zealand predecessors, The Hamilton County Bluegrass Band, BB was always drawn to the five-piece full band, and after heading to America in 2012 she co-founded her current group, Mile Twelve.  Currently, BB lives in Cambridge, MA. But becoming one of the biggest touring rock acts on the planet and recording 9 records doesn't leave much time for anything else. So Jay sequestered himself in the the Mojave Desert to conjure up the spirits that would allow him to delve deep into his own soul to find what he could mine out of it. The result, Weapons of Beauty, is his first solo effort since joining Rival Sons and it provides a showcase for the power and sincerity of Jay's voice which can be out volumed in his band's usual form. Though some are melancholy and sparse, the songs look for truisms in life cutting to heart of what really matters. "Harmoniegesänge machen was mit mir!" Also bretonisch-keltische Einflüsse, gemischt mit Rock. […] – Katharina Heinius 1974 ist das Album "I've Got My Own Album To Do" entstanden, also in der Zeit, bevor Ron Wood Teil der Rolling Stones geworden ist. "The Wick" lag im etwas abgelegenen Londoner Westen, in Richmond. Ep 619: dUg Pinnick Has Big News — New Solo Album Coming & King's X Planning to Write Again in 2026!

dUg Pinnick remains one of the most distinctive voices in modern rock and metal, and in this conversation we dig into both his creative present and his long, winding history. We open with his newest work — a brand-new solo album that he's just wrapped — and the candid way he describes the vibe behind it. Pinnick talks about chasing raw energy, leaning into funk-heavy grooves and hard-rock punch, and blending the influences that have lived inside him since he first picked up a bass. He's honest about the process too: he writes constantly, piling up countless demos over the years, and chooses the ones that speak loudest when it's time to make a record. That creative overflow is something that's defined his entire career. Born Douglas Pinnick in Illinois and raised in the Midwest, he cut his teeth in gospel, soul and R&B long before the rock world found him. Music became both a refuge and a compass, and by the late '70s he crossed paths with Ty Tabor and Jerry Gaskill — the partnership that would become King's X. Their chemistry was instant and undeniable. After years grinding on the Texas club circuit under different names, the band finally broke through in the late '80s with a sound nobody else had: thick grooves, big harmonies, spiritual introspection, and Pinnick's unmistakable voice tying it all together.King's X went on to release a run of genre-defining albums across the '80s, '90s, and 2000s, influencing everyone from Pearl Jam to Dream Theater. Their catalog — from Gretchen Goes to Nebraska to Dogman to Ear Candy — built their reputation as one of the most respected musicians' bands in rock. Pinnick talks about that legacy with both pride and humility, acknowledging how many artists cite them as a foundation while also admitting the band has always followed its own compass regardless of commercial trends.Today, he's in a full creative swing again with his latest solo album completed and out in the world. He describes it as loose, funky, riff-driven, and honest — everything he enjoys about working alone, where he can chase any idea without compromise. He hints that if the stars align he'd love to bring some of the material to the stage, but he's not pressuring himself with a schedule. For now, he's simply enjoying making music that feels alive. And looking ahead, there's real motion in the King's X camp. All three members have talked about recording again, and Pinnick confirms they've been exchanging ideas and discussing a new album with an eye toward 2026. Nothing is locked in — King's X will only release something if it feels meaningful — but the desire is there, and the songs are beginning to take shape. For fans, that's enough to spark real hope. Between renewed solo energy and the possibility of another King's X record, dUg Pinnick is entering yet another inspired chapter of a career that refuses to slow down.

Pete Townshend – "White City (A Novel)"

"White City (A Novel)" erschien am 11. Your not-so-innocent pop explorers Joel and David are kicking off in the summer of 2000 with the monumental cultural shift that was Vicky B's UK Garage collab with Truesteppers and Dane Bowers, 'Out of Your Mind'. The whirlwind media saga, a nail-biting chart battle with Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Spiller ('Groovejet'), and a string of outstanding live performances from Party In The Park in Hyde Park to MTV in Mallorca... this set the bar extremely high for Posh Spice's solo debut in a midst of duelling Solo Spice releases and an actual Spice Girls comeback on the horizon! The episode also dives into the underrated 2001 "Victoria Beckham" album. A classy pop and R&B body of work made with some of the world's best songwriters and producers; the album gave us the Top 10 singles 'Not Such An Innocent Girl' and 'A Mind of Its Own'. In Episode #244 of the XS Noize Podcast, host Mark Millar chats with Tom Smith — frontman of Editors — about his debut solo album There Is Nothing In The Dark That Isn't There In The Light, released 5 December on Play It Again Sam. After two decades leading Editors through seven acclaimed albums and two records with Smith & Burrows, Tom is stepping into solo territory for the first time. Motivated by a desire to reconnect with the raw, acoustic beginnings of his songwriting, he set out to create something more intimate and personal — a world away from the collaborative nature of his band projects. Produced with Iain Archer, the album blends stripped-back honesty with cinematic flourishes, moving from the nostalgic ache of Lights Of New York City to the soaring drama of Life Is For Living. Along the way, Tom explores themes of memory, resilience, and connection, balancing melancholy with hope. In this episode, Tom talks about finding his voice as a solo artist, the stories and emotions behind these songs, and we also revisit the Editors' back catalogue that made him one of the UK's most distinctive frontmen. Whether you've followed Tom's journey from the very first Editors record or are meeting him here for the first time, this is an intimate and revealing look at an artist entering a bold new chapter. Jamie James is a songwriter and musician who has been making music his whole life, and this Spring, he released his debut solo album, Straight Up, recorded with some longtime bandmates. James has always been into the blues and blues rock, and he's known for his work with Dennis Quaid & The Sharks, longtime collaborations with the late Harry Dean Stanton, and as the frontman of the '80s rockabilly trio The Kingbees. Rejoined with friends Tom Walsh (drums), Ken Stange (organ), and Tom Mancillas (bass), James took a group of songs that he wrote during the pandemic while recovering from open heart surgery to Kitten Robot Studio in Los Angeles. They recorded the ten songs on Straight Up live in the studio in one day only, capturing their years of experience playing together for the album. As an artist now in his 70s, James has a lifetime of perspective to bring not only to his songwriting, but to how he makes and records music, and the big lessons seem to be: Stay creative, stick to what you love, and make music with the people who bring you energy to do more. I spoke to Jamie James about his approach to Straight Up and his love for the blues.
