In this episode, we talk with Colorado's Holly Lovell as she was enjoying some off time with her family in New Zealand. We visit about how she developed her vocal chops, seasons or writing and making what you're capable of in the moment as to not stifle your creativity.     Indie folk singer/songwriter Holly Lovell released her album Hello Chelsea to the world on February 7, 2025. The album was produced in Eau Claire, WI with Brian Joseph (Bon Iver).   Holly Lovell, crafts songs that capture aching intimacy and vulnerability through perceptive storytelling. Using a mix of both acoustic and electric guitar, Lovell's alternative folk style songs are delivered with strong melodies and spirited conviction. She has been influenced by the lyrical prowess of artists such as Patty Griffin, Brandi Carlile and Bruce Springsteen.  Lovell's vocals have been likened to both Maggie Rogers and Ingrid Michaelson ‘but with far more gumption.' says The Denver Post, ‘She understands her songs and the power behind the lyrics. It's personal for her, for her band and every person that listens.'   Check Holly out here:  Website: hollylovell.com  IG: Hollylovell_  Facebook: Holly Lovell  TikTok: Hollylovell_   And check out Sweet Bloom Coffee Roasters here: https://sweetbloomcoffee.com/

A wistful but firm examination of lovingly leaving what we've outgrown, the discussion covers the art that gives us clear directions in life, the hard truth that believing isn't enough to make something real, and the feeling of deeply comforting melancholy. Oh how I've longed to talk to Liv Greene. Every once in a while you come across a young artist that seems older and wiser than her 26 years. Liv's been giving me that impression since I met her in 2019 when she was at Club Passim waiting tables and breaking hearts on the stage at just 21 years. Ok enough about being young. Liv's been writing, studying music and going to music camps since she was 12. Arguably she's been studying music all her life with her Americana loving parents who were filling the house with the sounds of Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris and Shawn Colvin, to name a few women In music in heavy rotation at the Greene house. Being the only of her friends that liked that kind of music, Liv attended many DC-area concerts with her mom, taking in the magic of live music at a very tender age. Speaking of tenderness, that's what Liv Greene is all about and she digs into it in our conversation. She started writing and playing shortly after she was inspired by a Taylor Swift concert. From there, she took off on the instrument and even sought out music education in camps like Miles of Music in New Hampshire. It was at that camp as well as the arts academy Interlochen High School, where she started meeting peers with similar interests. She found herself living for summers with her music camp friends. Prior to her senior year at Interlochen, Liv was a closeted queer at her all girls Catholic school mostly writing fictionalized stories into her songs because she could not deal with who she was.She attended and graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music and released her debut album (produced by Isa Burke) right in time for the pandemic in May of 2020. Shortly after that, she moved to Nashville and has spent the last several years on an intense path of self-discovery. Liv found her community, came out, wrote and self-produced her new album, Deep Feeler. On this album, you can hear the growth she's experienced and you can hear Liv thriving in her corner of the Nashville Music scene that includes the indie folk music scene. We talk about all of this including what it means to have a neurodivergent brain, music production, the roller skating community and her favorite Taurus personality traits.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? REVERED AMERICAN GUITARIST/SINGER/SONGWRITER/JOHN WESLEY ON TOUR WITH ALT ROCK BAND VERTICAL HORIZON: EXCLUSIVE ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS WITH RAY SHASHO! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. John Wesley has built a long and varied career as a songwriter, “sideman” guitarist, and recording artist. His music has been called lyrically sensitive and musically dynamic. His songwriting style incorporates emotionally charged vocals that evoke the honesty and intimacy of Roger Waters and Patty Griffin coupled with a melodic yet intricate guitar style reminiscent of David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson, Jeff Beck, and Warren Haynes. Wesley's guitar-driven acoustic and electric songs represent the cultivation of many inspirations — alternative, progressive, art, and classic rock genres intertwined with poignant lyrics drawn from the poetry of the common man. What really appeals to Wesley's fans worldwide is a spark of sincerity and sensitivity so oft absent in today's mainstream music In 2021, Wesley began touring as a guitarist and backing vocalist for alternative rock band from D.C. How she overcame some vocal issues. The importance of a great producer. What it takes to make a confident leap of faith. And the key to great harmony singing from one of the best to ever do it. It's no coincidence that she has sung with so many legends from Mavis Staples to Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson. Roy Orbison, Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, John Prine and Neil Young to name a few. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I am thrilled and honored to sit down with the incredible Luke Bulla, one of my all-time favorite instrumentalists and vocalists. Our conversation is a deep dive into his remarkable musical journey and the experiences that have shaped his illustrious career.Luke's life has been steeped in music from an early age. At age four, he began touring and singing with his family band and took up the fiddle at seven. His prodigious talent quickly became evident as he went on to win the National Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho, six times in his respective age categories. At sixteen, he made history by becoming the youngest winner of the Grand Champion division. By age ten, Luke had already made a mark at Nashville's Grand Master Fiddle Championship as the youngest top-ten finalist. In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville, diving headfirst into a full-time music career. His early years in Tennessee were marked by his stint with Ricky Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, where his exceptional fiddle playing earned him his first Grammy Award. Following this, he joined the John Cowan Band. He performed and recorded with a host of renowned artists including Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and many more. His collaborations read like a who's who of the music industry, featuring names such as Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs.Luke was a perennial instructor at Mark O'Connor's fiddle camps during his early years in Nashville. Alongside his long-time friend Casey Driessen, Luke founded the band Wisechild, which toured briefly with John Mayer and Counting Crows. He also played a pivotal role in the band W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration), a collaboration that included notable members like Sean Watkins, Glen Phillips, Sara Watkins, Benmont Tench, Pete Thomas, Greg Leisz, and Davey Faragher. In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring a stellar lineup of musicians, including Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, and Aoife O'Donovan. That same year, he joined Lyle Lovett's Large Band and toured full-time with them until 2023.In 2015, Luke co-founded the Bluegrass/Americana record label, Pure Music | Nashville, with music and business executive John L. Originally a fun side hustle and bluegrass vehicle for Zack, the group, which also includes Charlie Rose and Taylor and Jake Armerding, started very casually performing at the legendary local Cantab Lounge. Zack accurately likens the vibe of the place to a basement Star Wars Cantina full of bluegrass bands. In between their main gigs with performers like Josh Ritter and Lori McKenna and solo careers, Barnstar! has cultivated an explosive live performance filled with energy and emotional expression leaving concert attendees cheering and crying along. Included in their repertoire are some of the finest music covers including many that you'd never expect to see on a kind of bluegrass band album, like The Hold Steady, Patty Griffin, Elliott Smith and Elizabeth & The Catapult. We talk about what it's like to bring a cover song to the band to learn as well as co-writing with friends like Dinty Child and Chuck Prophet. We'd be remiss if we did not address the alien-like quality of Mark Erelli's singing voice and learn that it is because of his bestie Zack and Barnstar! that he can sing like this. Now he finds himself performing vocal warm-ups before hitting the stage with the guys. Not something he ever thought he'd do. Provide valuable resources like websites such as “Just Think Twice” and "Get Smart About Drugs" to empower both children and adults. Emphasize the importance of intentionality, understanding, and maintaining trust in parent-child relationships to address drug use effectively.   Jodie Sweetin is an actress, author, and advocate, best known for her role as Stephanie Tanner on the iconic sitcom "Full House" and its sequel "Fuller House". His unique talent for transforming seemingly dull drug and alcohol prevention information into a captivating and humorous experience has earned him the title of a true "comedian," with performances at renowned venues like the Improv in Hollywood and Ontario, CA. Ray's journey began with a profound realization of the devastating impact of addiction on young adults during his time at the Teen Challenge Ministry Institute, driving him to dedicate his career to youth prevention. As a vice principal and educator, he pioneered family-oriented, drug-free programs, understanding schools' commitment to their students' well-being. The Los Angeles musician recorded the project live in Nashville, capturing the throwback vibe of her favorite albums from groundbreaking female artists such as Brandi Carlile, Patty Griffin, Janis Joplin and Bonnie Raitt. Porter co-wrote every song on Pink Cloud, drawing on Americana, Country and R&B/Soul influences as well as the personal milestones on her journey. As a child in Massachusetts, she won Star Search and soon relocated to Los Angeles. She landed roles in films like Curly Sue and Parenthood then made her Broadway debut in Footloose and played Bebe Bensonheimer in the revival of A Chorus Line in 2005. Not long after that, a friend submitted her to The Voice without telling her – a surprise move that opened the door for the next phase of her career. Making an intentional decision to turn her creative energies to music, Porter accepted the offer to appear on the show – and ultimately won the competition in 2016. Since then, Alisan has been writing and performing all around the world. She has shared the stage with incredible artists such as Christina Aguilera, Adam Lambert, Toby Keith, Cole Swindell, and many others. She has released three albums and written songs for artists such as Alison Krauss, Adam Lambert and the Veronica's. We talk about the album's forgotten origins in the midst of a legal battle with the band's record label, how they fused their bluegrass background with contemporary country and pop songwriting, how they used songs written by Patty Griffin, Darrel Scott and more to communicate their point of view, how Fleetwood Mac's ‘Landslide' was given a new lease on life by its inclusion on this album, “show off songs” and how the album influenced Fanny's development as a young woman.

"Get Me To A Nunnery" The Hawaii-born, Wisconsin-raised Heather Lynne Horton has a lot of stories to tell and because she's a born storyteller, she does so with the perfect blend of humor, hi-jinx and self-deprecation. We'll let her tell you those stories, but in the meantime, we'll offer this quick version of who she is. After college she hit Minneapolis in search of the mythical Prince and then landed in Chicago where she met her real life prince, singer/songwriter Michael McDermott. She plays fiddle and sings backup in McDermott's band and the two also had the fabulous side project The Westies. Her first solo album Postcard Saturdays came out in 2012, which was followed by Don't Mess With Mrs. Murphy in 2018. Although it took nearly six years for the follow-up Get Me To A Nunnery to hit shelves, it was well worth the wait. A moving and stirring song cycle that brings to mind Beth Orton, Sinead Lohan and 1,000 Kisses-era Patty Griffin, Get Me To The Nunnery is redolent with strength, vulnerability, humor and darkness. Horton's phrasing is emotionally precise and each syllable lands with finesse and grace. It's a top to bottom a perfect album and this conversation is so much fun. There's a lot of buzz around town about the 2nd Annual Annapolis Songwriters Festival rolling into town on September 14th. And rightfully so! We sat down with Laura from Rams Head Presents (a sister to all the other Rams Head businesses) to see what's in store for the encore of the wildly successful inaugural one last year! And in a word... OMG!! There is a lot to digest, but it is four days long, encompasses venues from Westgate Circle to City Dock, and has more than 140 performances with more than 100 (yes 100) free performances over the four days. For music lovers, this is the Holy Grail! Rams Head has the experience as they have done the world-famous Key West Songwriters Festival for years, and bringing it to Annapolis made a lot of sense. And while there are internationally known songwriters coming to town, they did not forget the wealth of talent right here and you can hear from local artists like Ray Weaver Daphne Eckman, Jordan Sokol, Eightlock, and more! Some of the national names you know will include Blondie with Thomas Dolby, Leeann Rimes, Michelle Branch, Marty Stuart, and Patty Griffin! The kick-off party is at Rams Head Tavern on Thursday afternoon with continuous, free music on the patio. And something a bit different this year Saturday night will be a free concert right at City Dock. You will be hard-pressed to find a downtown Annapolis venue without live music over these three days--and even on the water with a concert on the Harbor Queen as she cruises the Severn River! So much going on. Have a listen!

A triple Scorpio, she has been compared to Brandi Carlile, Patty Griffin, and Lucinda Williams, and has already shared the stage with legends such as Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. He's Bob Schneider, musician and songwriter extraordinaire. Learn how Bob writes songs, hones his craft and produces music of significance. He is an Austin, Texas–based musician and former lead singer of the rock band Ugly Americans. He has released around a dozen albums, mostly on his own Shockorama label. Lonelyland (2001) was licensed through Universal Records, while in 2005 distribution deal with Vanguard Records saw his albums made widely available. In 2009 he signed to Kirtland Records and put out Lovely Creatures, A Perfect Day, and Burden of Proof. His record The King Kong Suite was released on Shockorama Records in 2015.The son of an opera singer, he moved with his parents to Germany when he was two, while his father received instruction from noted vocal teachers. It led to a marginal existence as “my parents had this big plan, but my dad just didn't have the voice". He learned guitar and piano at an early age, and performed at his parents' parties. He studied art in college, while performing in his first band, a funk-rock outfit called Joe Rockhead. The band independently released three albums before disbanding. Schneider subsequently performed with Ugly Americans who were an opening act for the Dave Matthews Band and signed with the revived Capricorn Records.[8] In 1997, Schneider co-founded The Scabs, a funk ensemble that regularly played in around Austin and described as " inspired by The Rugburns (right down to the suits and ties) [with] bawdy show tunes and puerile blues in the beginning, but eventually the powerhouse funk took over when the Grooveline Horns were added".Career In 1999, Schneider formed a solo act, initially under the name Lonelyland, which became the title of his record released through Universal Records. His style has been described as "acoustic based songs with electronic beats and noises in the background and other types of cross genre music. His live shows are known for improvisation [and] audience involvement".[He went on to record the major-label solo albums Lonelyland (2001) and I'm Good Now (2004), which garnered him significantly more national attention and some critical acclaim. "Big Blue Sea" from the Lonelyland album received significant radio play, as did "Come With Me Tonight" from I'm Good Now. "Metal & Steel" from Lonelyland is, to date, Schneider's most played song. The contracts that he signed with Universal in 2001 and Vanguard in 2004 allowed him to release albums as "side projects" on his own Shockorama Records.Among the albums that have been self-released are Galaxy Kings and I've Seen The End of the World and It Looks Like This. All of these side projects were re-released by Vanguard in conjunction with the release of his 2006 album The Californian. Previously, these albums had limited availability as approximately 10,000 copies were produced. After releasing The Californian, Schneider also put out Greatest Hits Live, recorded in Austin on July 17, 2006, on Shockorama Records. He has a long-standing Monday night residency at the Saxon Pub and regularly plays at Antone's, both venues in Austin. His live-band includes Harmoni Kelley (bass), Jeff Plankenhorn (guitars), Conrad Choucroun (drums), Danny Levin (cello) and Oliver Steck (accordion) In 2009, Schneider signed with Kirtland Records and released Lovely Creatures in September 2009. It featured the single "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)", which peaked at #14 on the AAA Radio Chart. The album also featured Patty Griffin on the track "Changing Your Mind".He released a second album on the label entitled "A Perfect Day" on April 19, 2011, featuring the single "Let The Light In." "Burden of Proof" was released on June 11, 2013.His next musical project, King Kong, was released in 2015 under the Shockorama label and was the result of a crowdsourcing campaign through PledgeMusic. King Kong saw its release over the course of 2015 in the form of three EPs (volumes collectively known as The King Kong Suite) as well as a full-length album made available to his online backers. In 2017, Schneider began making his massive backlog of recorded demos available to his fans through Patreon. I've covered various topics and featured many wonderful and diverse guests on this podcast. As many of you know one of my favorite passions is music and seeing a vast array of musicians perform live. That's one of the reasons I moved to Austin. I've been lucky enough to become increasingly entrenched in the local Austin music scene. I'm excited to share my conversation with this week's guest, singer-songwriter Ali Holder. We exchange our take on the importance of vulnerability and our love for west Texas. Also we discuss our fears for impact of the exponential growth of Austin, and how that may effect its robust and vibrant music community. Ali has been compared to Patty Griffin and Lucinda Williams.  Connect with Ali: aliholder.com Be a part of this podcast! “Talking Walls” Lilly Winwood grew up in the English Coutnryside, a locale that was lush, expansive and quiet. The hum and groove of a big city was calling, so at 18 she left home for a little more social and artistic volume. After a few stops in a few years she ended up in Nashville, which was not only a comfortable place—her mom was from Tennessee and she visited regularly as a kid—it was a place filled with like-minded artists. Lilly Winwood has been on a creative tear—her debut Time Well Spent was assured and filled with promise and her follow up Talking Walls is a massive leap forward. Shimmering with wisdom and maturity, Talking Walls is filed with equal parts strength and maturity. Bringing to mind Kasey Chambers or Patty Griffin, Talking Walls isn't afraid to confront the big questions and the results are massively satisfying. A rollicking, melodic and decidedly memorable set, Talking Walls is a refreshing blast of roots rock thats as fresh as it is timeless. Lilly Winwood has done a lot already in her career—she sang back up for her dad Steve Winwood and even opened for him on occasion. She's also toured with Jackie Greene and Todd Snider and was on the bill for the All Star Neil Young Tribute show. With a voice thats imbued with power and life, Winwoods' delivery is breezy and ageless and her songs remind us that life can put you through it but the good stuff is waiting on the other side. www.lillywinwood.org www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Singer/Songwriter/Actor John Doe tells terrific tales: hanging with Dennis Quaid and Winona Ryder in Memphis, gigging with Nick Lowe in London and hearing his voice come out of Christian Bale's mouth in Todd Haynes's Dylan biopic I'm Not There.Did John's appearance with LA punk band X on the Letterman Show in 1983 inspire Dylan's wild 1984 set with The Plugz? What did he say when he suddenly found himself face-to-face with Bruce Springsteen at that Grammy thing? Did Jerry Lee Lewis actually call him a "fucking asshole" the first time they met? John raves about Tulsa's new Bob Dylan Center and answers all the above questions, as he presses on…John Doe and his bandmates in X made 6 studio recordings from 1978-1993. He has recorded 9 solo records, collaborating with Patty Griffin, Dan Auerbach, Aimee Mann, Don Was, Kathleen Edwards, Dave Alvin and Greg Liesz. Doe has acted in over 50 films and television productions including Road House, Great Balls of Fire, Pure Country and Roswell. His musical side projects include work with The Knitters and The Sadies. Doe co-wrote the definitive book about the LA punk rock scene, Under The Big Black Sun. His new album, Fables In A Foreign Land, was inspired by John Wesley Harding. This week, Alan, Quinta and Scott were joined by Jeffrey Kosseff, cybersecurity law professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, to hash through some of the week's big national security news, including: “One Letter Off KGB, Two Letters Away from DGAF.” The Department of Homeland Security has taken heat this week for creating an internal Disinformation Governance Board, which partisan critics have railed against as a federal “Ministry of Truth” responsible for policing speech. What's the real story behind this group? And does it warrant all this fervor?“One Bad Mother Tucker.” A newly published New York Times report documents how Tucker Carlson's Fox News show makes unprecedented use of racist rhetoric and partisan fear-mongering. What new did we learn? And what broader impact should we expect this report to have?“Chutes and Escalation Ladders.” While Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a habit of invoking his country's nuclear arsenal in response to Western reactions to his invasion of Ukraine, he so far hasn't made any signs toward actually using it. But is this about to change? And how should the United States and its allies respond? For object lessons, Alan endorsed his neighbor's ghost pepper-laced apple brandy, which all listeners should take as an invitation to crash at his place in Minnesota. In light of the pending repeal of Roe v. Wade, Quinta recommended that listeners read Jessica Bruder's “The Future of Abortion in a Post-Roe America." On a similar logic, Scott encouraged listeners to look back to John Hart Ely's 1973 critique of Roe "The Wages of Crying Wolf" for a vision of the pre-Roe legal landscape to which we may be returning. And Jeff recommended one of his favorite musical artists Patty Griffin and her forthcoming album, giving her some of the publicity that she won't pursue herself.Be sure to visit our show page at www.lawfareblog.com and to follow us on Twitter at @RatlSecurity.
