Do you have a documentary, or do you have a Wikipedia entry?Somebody decides whether your documentary gets made. Sophia Dilley is one of those people. She runs Concord Originals, the division behind Stax: Soulsville U.S.A. on HBO, and she is Co-President of RKO, which Concord bought in June 2025 along with more than 5,000 titles including King Kong, Citizen Kane and It's a Wonderful Life. In this episode she gives away the three questions she asks before her team commits to anything.In Episode 286, Christian sits down with Sophia Dilley, Executive Vice President of Concord Originals and Co-President of RKO, to talk about how a project gets chosen, how to reach out to someone far above you, and how music rights for film work when the budget you have is the only budget there is.The spine of the conversation is a question Dilley asks before her team commits to anything: is this a Wikipedia story we're telling? If the whole thing is already available in twelve seconds of searching, there may not be a film in it. Around that sit her two other threshold questions, a working answer to why the documentary business feels impossible right now, and the plainest reassurance in the episode. "It's scary," she says. The song belongs to a publisher and the specific recording belongs to a label, so most documentaries need both a sync license and a master use license. On Stax: Soulsville U.S.A., that meant clearing more than thirty artists, multiple publishers and several estates. Concord Originals EVP Sophia Dilley says the first step is acknowledging you need those rights before you build the film around them.What if I can't afford to license a song for my film?Call anyway, and be honest about the budget. Sophia Dilley advises independent filmmakers to say who they are, name what the film was made for, show the actual scene the song would sit under, and ask directly for help. "Behind every door at every music company, there are real people," she says. A studio with a real budget cannot use that approach. A genuine independent often can.How long does it take to make a music documentary?Longer than most filmmakers expect. Sophia Dilley of Concord Originals puts the average at five years, at least. Stax: Soulsville U.S.A. began in 2018, when a colleague walked into her office with the story, and premiered on HBO in May 2024. Much of that time goes to music rights, estates and publishers rather than to production, because every stakeholder connected to the music has to be brought on side first.Who owns RKO now?Concord Originals acquired RKO Pictures in June 2025, but the deal is narrower than it sounds. Distribution rights to the classic RKO library remain with Turner. What Concord bought are the derivative rights, meaning remakes, sequels, prequels, story and stage rights to more than 5,000 titles the studio produced in-house. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with drummer Pat Steward for a wide-ranging conversation about groove, feel, listening, and the experiences that shape a musician over a lifetime. Pat has spent decades behind the kit, including a long history with Bryan Adams, and I had the chance to see him perform in St. Louis shortly before we recorded this conversation. Watching him play reinforced something I have always admired about his drumming: there are no wasted notes. Everything serves the song, the singer, and the musicians around him.We talk about the current Bryan Adams tour and what allows a highly produced arena show to feel still spontaneous and alive. Pat explains his evolving relationship with playing to a click, the importance of supporting a singer, and why feel can be difficult to reduce to a technical formula. We also get into the band's current four-piece configuration, with Bryan handling much of the bass playing himself, and how that change has created a different rhythm-section dynamic.Pat takes me back to his beginnings as a young drummer, from hearing The Beatles and Creedence Clearwater Revival to learning songs by playing along with the radio and records. We talk about Bad Company, Linda Ronstadt, KISS, Rush, AC/DC, jazz education, school bands, and the value of learning to function in as many different musical situations as possible. That curiosity has never left him. If you go looking for songs about the moon, they'll start falling out of the sky. Moon-themed songs are some of the oldest in recorded history as well as some of the most recent to hit the charts. They can be found connected to everything from organized religion to witchcraft, they come from all parts of the planet, and they show up in every genre of music. In honor of the 2026 blue moon, the hosts of "How We Heard It" embarked on a quest to find songs about the moon, and they were overwhelmed - not just by the sheer number of songs they found, but also by the extensive breadth of the songs. Earth's closest companion inspires all manner of emotions. And when you project your feelings on the moon, it reflects and enhances your mood. Are you feeling amorous? Lonely? Anxious? Content? Mysterious? Grounded? Gaze upon the moon and your feelings will intensify. In song, the moon can be blue, red, pink, silver and orange. It can be full, new, half ... or just a sliver. The phases of the moon can reflect the phases of life. Or the moon can just be an old goose. As the podcast's hosts discovered, the moon can be whatever you want it to be. After five albums within the span of two and a half years, Creedence Clearwater Revival was starting to have some issues. John Fogerty was the songwriter, lead guitarist, lead singer and producer for all of their material, and by Pendulum, their second album for 1970, that was wearing him down. This week we conclude Jarvis' three-part interview of Cirith Ungol founder / drummer Robert Garven going back through the mists of time to the early days of that legendary band.  Rob explains how vocalist Tim Baker came into the fold and talks about the previous singer, Neil Beattie. He goes on to tell the remarkable story of how the Frost and Fire debut album came to be. It was a completely DIY affair, from financing to recording to artwork to pressing to distribution, which was unheard of in those days. Rob also explains how he obtained the legal right to use the Cirith Ungol name from the Lord of the Rings books. It's a fascinating dive into a bygone era, at the very dawn of heavy metal in America. Lead singer of Creedence Clearwater Revival and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, John Fogerty joins Bobby on this episode of the BobbyCast! John takes a deep dive into the origin story of CCR and how the name came about. Plus, John tells the stories about writing a few classics, such as "Proud Mary" in 1 hour and "Fortunate Son" in just 20 minutes while in his bedroom without any melody. John also talked to Bobby about the true meaning behind his lyrics, his earliest memories of music during his childhood days and when he got his first guitar. Bobby also found a picture of John in his early 20's and asked him if he had any advice for himself back then, what would it be.
