“Is this gonna be another stand-up fight, sir, or another bug hunt?” Well, neither really. It's an October surprise! We've got Aliens, Colonial Marines, and four people who love the 1986 movie Aliens. Joining me for the discussion are my sister Megan Cutter, former guest / fellow podcaster Mandy Self, and fellow Portland-area podcaster Luke … Continue reading "Bonus: Aliens (1986 movie) discussion panel"
It’s unfortunately time to talk about the A Wrinkle In Time adaptations. We also discuss the book, of course, but I tried to pull back a bit since my fuller thoughts on the book are also covered in my Hugos There episode with Mandy Self: https://hugospodcast.com/podcast/a-wrinkle-in-time-by-madeline-lengle-feat-mandy-self/ Rankings! Colin/James/Seth: book very large chasm, perhaps a cloud … Continue reading A Wrinkle In Time, by Madeline L’Engle →

Mandy Self joins me once again to discuss A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeline L'Engle. This is a “Seth's Picks” episode, but it's also an award-winner, having won the Newberry Award in 1963. It’s Lent season as this episode is posted, and what better genre show to consider than the excellent Netflix limited series, Midnight Mass. This is just four Christian engineers discussing an awesome series that delves into interesting religious and philosophical topics, wrapped into a super compelling narrative. Joining me are Mandy Self and Scott Danielson, … Continue reading "Bonus Episode! Midnight Mass discussion panel"
We discuss the movie that kicked it all off, and look back at Season 1. With special guest Mandy Self! Chapters: Stargate (1994 movie) [DEEP DIVE], Season 1 [DEEP DIVE]
Something I've wrestled quite a bit with over the years is my dawning understanding that the evidence for evolution is, contrary to the many attempts to deny it, very good. I've read extensively on the subject and thought long and hard about how to integrate this understanding with my Christian faith. It hasn't always been a fun process, but you know what's fun? Talking about a topic with people who have taken similar journeys. So I gathered my friends and had an informal discussion with them about what the process for them coming to similar understandings was like and how it's affected them in their interactions with other people, as well as their relationships with God and the Church. There's no attempt here to proselytize for any particular view here, and we're not actually looking for a debate. Just having an edifying discussion between believers. Thanks to Mandy Self, J.w. Wartick, and Juan Sanmiguel for being willing to have the discussion.
The Spoilers must flow! #desertpower Michael Gabriel, who covered Dune (novel) with me for the podcast, returns along with his podcast co-host Mandy Self to talk (at length) about the new film adaptation. If you enjoy the discussion, you'll probably enjoy their podcast, Trivially Crucial. I'm mostly a fly on the wall here. Also, keep in mind, we all liked the movie quite a bit.
Mandy Self joins Seth again to discuss her comfort reading, which is Garth Nix’s Abhorsen series, starting with Sabriel. By their very nature, these episodes contain some light spoilers, and we don’t really have a non-spoiler discussion section, so be aware of that. Supergirl season 3 episode 4 - Our panel tries, unsuccessfully, to untangle the logic of Coville’s Cult of Rao/Supergirl, comparing them to the Appalachian snake handlers. (The Supergirl Supercast does not endorse throwing snakes at people.) They also mull possible ways for Maggie and Alex to get past the whole having children or not having children thing. Host Trish Matson with Mandy Self and Brianna Taeuber.

This time, Seth is joined by Mandy Self, the other half of Trivially Crucial, to discuss Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card, winner of the 1987 Hugo Award. It’s Mandy’s second-favorite book and Seth’s favorite. So don’t expect much objectivity here. Warning: Even the spoiler-lite section of this podcast will spoil the end … Continue reading "Hugos There Podcast #5: Speaker for the Dead (feat. Mandy Self)"
