Today we are doing a special sermon presentation on the podcast. Instead of one of our priests of the Society of Saint Pius X, we'll re-present a sermon by one of - if not the giant – of preaching in all of Christendom, St. Francis de Sales. And so it might help to know something about the preacher who gave it almost exactly 400 years ago today. St. Francis de Sales was one of the great bishops and spiritual teachers of the early seventeenth century, known not for fiery rhetoric, but for clarity, patience, and a deep pastoral charity. He believed that souls are won for God not by pressure or argument, but by gentleness and love. Even those who opposed him were often disarmed by the kindness and calm strength of his preaching. Saint Francis had a special devotion to the mystery of the Incarnation and to the feast of Christmas. He frequently returned in his sermons and writings to the humility of God made man, marveling that the eternal Word chose to come into the world as a helpless child. For him, Bethlehem was a school of confidence and simplicity, where the soul learns to trust God and to approach Him without fear. The sermon you are about to hear was preached at Midnight Mass on Christmas Day in 1622. The stillness of that hour held deep meaning for St. Francis. While the world slept, he saw heaven quietly at work, revealing a God who comes without spectacle, without force, and without demand, asking only to be welcomed. As you listen, allow these words to lead you to the crib at Bethlehem, and to encounter once again the Child who comes into the world tonight out of love for us. - - - - - - - We'd love your feedback on these Daily Devotionals! On this Christmas Day's Woman's Hour Nuala McGovern and Anita Rani are discussing the rituals and traditions that we do at Christmas. Some passed down across the generations and some adapted through in-laws or friends that make this time of year so special and unique to us all. Do you always receive presents in a stocking? Perhaps it's a bracing Christmas walk or plunge into the sea, or maybe it's matching Christmas pyjamas. With a recent YouGov poll saying that 89% of Brits celebrate Christmas and most of the preparation and work that goes into this festive season is done by women, what role do women play in the making and maintaining of these rituals? And Nuala and Anita will be finding out about the importance of nostalgia and why we love to do the same thing year after year. Liza Frank, author of Household Lore - folklore, traditions and remedies for every room in your home, and Beverley Cook, Social History Curator, London Museum, discuss the origins of our treasured rituals and traditions.Dr Audrey Tang, author and a chartered psychologist with the British Psychological Society explains the importance of the rituals we do every year and why we do them.Cookery writer Syke McAlpine, author of The Christmas Companion, delves into our food rituals and shares her own Christmas traditions, which span between the UK, Italy and Australia.Author and book coach Penelope Wincer tells us about Friendsmas, hosting friends rather than families at Christmas, and what it's like to embrace and create new traditions together.Travel journalist Jessica Vincent talks us through some of the rituals that happen across the world, from throwing dough at the ceiling and hoping it sticks, to roller skating to Midnight Mass. And there's live music from Alexis Strum, who writes a Christmas song every year. Her song for 2025 is called I won't be lonely this Christmas.Presenters: Nuala McGovern and Anita Rani Producer: Andrea Kidd Editor: Karen Dalziel
“My friends and I were told by our hotel host that this is one of the most remote villages in Slovenia, that tonight was a rare opportunity to see many of the mountain-dwelling residents in one place. We decided to make our way to the Midnight Mass at the old church up the hill. And these propulsive, polyrhythmic bells ushered everyone in from the cold.”

Homily for Midnight Mass given by Fr. Andrew Thornton
Friends of the Rosary,Today, Christmas Eve, the end of Advent, is a day of much joyous expectation, with families gathered in a Silent and Holy Night. It's the anticipation of the arrival of the Savior of the Human race, the Light of the World. The liturgy proclaims, "Today you shall know that the Lord shall come and tomorrow you shall see His glory."Throughout Advent, we have seen how the preparation for Jesus' coming was heralded by Isaiah, John the Baptist, and the Virgin Mother. The King of Kings, according to His human nature, was born at Bethlehem of the Virgin Mary and conceived of the Spirit of holiness.Since our first parents were cast forth from the earthly paradise, the gate of eternity was closed. The Redeemer alone opens this door and enters in. On Christmas Eve, we stand before the gate of paradise, as the Psalm 23 of the vigil states,Lift up your gates, O princes,Open wide, eternal gates,That the King of Glory may enter inWith a quiet mind, we devote ourselves to the great mystery of the Holy Night, with our prayer, the Christmas carols, and the tradition of the exchange of gifts, after the Christ-Child has been placed in the manger in Bethlehem. Then on Midnight Mass, we can concentrate on the Greatest Gift given to all: the love of Christ.Ave MariaCome, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Christmas Eve in Tudor England was a day of preparation, restraint, and anticipation, not feasting. It marked the final day of Advent. In this short Christmas Eve episode, I'm sharing quick reminders of how Tudor people marked this special day, from fasting and firelight to church and tradition, before the celebrations truly began. For a deeper look at how Christmas was celebrated across the whole season, watch my video “The Real Twelve Days of Christmas” - https://youtu.be/0t61a2jATgs Before I go, I also want to say a heartfelt thank you, from me and Tim, and from our whole family (including the pets!), for all your support this year. Actor and filmmaker Kate Siegel (The Haunting of Hill House, Hush, Midnight Mass) joins Talking Strange host Aaron Sagers to discuss her darkly twisted short "Down the Chimney," part of Executive Producers David Dastmalchian and The Boulet Brothers' The Boulet Brothers' Holiday of Horrors anthology, now streaming on Shudder and AMC+. Siegel dives into turning one of the most familiar holiday tropes — Santa visiting good little boys and girls — and turns it into a hilariously dark Rankin/Bass-esque tale of Seasonal body horror. And how she did it to get revenge on her sister! In their conversation, they chat about the creepy side of the holidays, childhood vulnerability, and the creepy side of Elf on the Shelf. She also talks about writing and directing horror in a compact format, collaborating with The Boulet Brothers and David Dastmalchian, and what she hopes husband Mike Flanagan got her for Christmas. And don't miss the other interviews for Holiday of Horrors as part of the Talking Strange show, including chats with David Dastmalchian, The Boulet Brothers, and Akela Cooper (M3GAN, Malignant). _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. Hi everyone, happy Tuesday! You didn't think I could keep Michael Trucco away for long, did you? The last time I had Michael on the show, it was audio-only, so if you've been dying to see his beautiful face, today's your lucky day! I first met Michael on Battlestar where he played Samuel T. Anders, but we have stayed close over the years. As an actor, he has been on a role recently— you may have seen him as Sean Del Monte in The Rookie, Luke Leone on Fire Country, or in one of Mike Flanagan's recent projects, from Life of Chuck, to Fall of the House of Usher, to Midnight Mass. Why is Michael Trucco in all of these amazing projects, and many many more? Because he's the BEST and literally everyone wants to work with him! We have so much fun catching up in this episode. We swap Battlestar stories, we talk about how he stays positive through the ups and downs of a long career, and we even get into some questions from you, the audience. Welcome to Day 2 of my Tudor Christmas Advent series! Today, we're stepping into the smoky, bustling, gloriously extravagant royal kitchens of Henry VIII to uncover the unforgettable dishes served at a Tudor Christmas feast. While Advent was a month of fasting and restraint, everything changed the moment Midnight Mass ended on Christmas Day. And nobody feasted with more splendour — or spent more money — than Henry VIII. His very first Christmas as king cost the modern equivalent of £13.5 million! Join me, historian and author Claire Ridgway, as we explore: The dazzling meats on the king's table The terrifying Tudor showpiece: the “cockatrice” The ceremonial boar's head, carried in to trumpets, drums, and song Sugary marvels like marchpane sculptures, leech, gilded fruits and sugar-plate creations Tudor Christmas drinks — mulled wine, hippocras, Christmas ale, and lamb's wool The original Christmas pie, stuffed with layer upon layer of birds We'll also explore what ordinary Tudor families ate, why Christmas food symbolised power, and how feasting became a kind of royal performance. Thank you for joining me for Day 2 of our journey toward Christmas! Tomorrow, in Day 3, we'll dive into Tudor gift-giving — when presents were exchanged and what a king or queen might receive. Step into late November with This Week in Horror History, the horror podcast that digs into the spooky anniversaries hiding between Thanksgiving and Christmas. In this episode, we dive into a full week of genre milestones for November 18–25, from cult slashers and gothic ghost stories to Stephen King adaptations, survival horror gaming, and a haunting cannibal romance. We kick things off at summer camp with Sleepaway Camp (1983), the infamous 1980s slasher movie whose shocking final twist made it a cult legend on VHS and a must-watch for every serious horror fan. Then we ride into the fog with Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow (1999), a stylish gothic horror film packed with headless-horseman mayhem, Hammer Horror vibes, and one of Johnny Depp's most beloved spooky roles. From there, we lock the supermarket doors and let The Mist (2007) roll in. This Stephen King horror movie traps terrified townspeople in a grocery store surrounded by Lovecraftian monsters and religious hysteria, building to one of the bleakest endings in modern horror cinema. We also pick up a controller for Condemned: Criminal Origins (2005), a grim Xbox 360 survival horror game that turned a next-gen console launch into a nightmare of crime scenes, jump scares, and first-person brutality. Our Deep-Cut Spotlight sinks its teeth into Salem's Lot (1979), Tobe Hooper's terrifying Stephen King TV miniseriesthat made an entire generation afraid to look out their bedroom windows. We talk small-town dread, the iconic window-scratch scene, and how this vampire story helped shape everything from Fright Night to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Midnight Mass.Along the way, we roll through horror birthdays (including icons connected to The Silence of the Lambs, The Thing, and indie horror favorites), revisit the legacy of Universal's Frankenstein in a Then & Now segment, and close with a Weekly Recommendation: Luca Guadagnino's Bones and All (2022), a melancholic cannibal road movie that plays like a twisted, emotional Thanksgiving watch. If you love horror history, Stephen King adaptations, Tim Burton gothic horror, 80s slasher movies, Thanksgiving horror, and deep dives into cult classics, this episode is your cozy, creepy guide to late-November genre viewing.Subscribe to This Week in Horror History on the Weekly Spooky network so you never miss a horror anniversary, hidden gem, or nightmare from the vault.Sleepaway Camp (1983)Streaming: Currently streaming on Peacock and available via Prime Video (depending on region/packaging).Physical: Recent Blu-ray restorations from boutique horror labels are in print and easy to hunt down for collectors.Sleepy Hollow (1999)Digital: Available to rent or buy digitally on the usual suspects, including Prime Video and Apple TV.Physical: Long-standing Paramount Blu-ray and DVD releases are widely available. The Mist (2007)Streaming: Streaming on Peacock and Paramount+, often as part of their Stephen King / horror lineups.Physical: Blu-ray editions are easy to find, including releases that feature Frank Darabont's preferred black-and-white cut.Condemned: Criminal Origins (2005 – game)Digital: Recently delisted from major digital storefronts, so it's not a simple click-to-buy anymore.Physical / Legacy: Best found as a physical Xbox 360 disc or as remaining PC keys from reputable sellers that still activate on Steam; expect some tinkering on modern hardware.Salem's Lot (1979 miniseries)Streaming: Shows up on free-with-ads streamers like Tubi and on horror-centric services such as AMC+ and Shudder from time to time, though availability shifts.Physical / Digital: There are solid DVD and Blu-ray editions in circulation, and it's typically available to rent or buy digitally on major VOD platforms when it falls out of flat-rate streaming.Bones and All (2022)Digital: Available digitally on Prime Video.Streaming: Also popping up on cinephile-focused streamers such as The Criterion Channel and MUBI, making it easy to slot into a late-night double feature. This episode of This Week in Horror History is brought to you by Savorista Coffee. Tara Erickson & Andrew Gordon react to Doctor Sleep (2019 – Director's Cut), the chilling and emotional supernatural horror sequel to The Shining — written and directed by Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Gerald's Game). Based on Stephen King's 2013 novel, this haunting continuation bridges King's world and Stanley Kubrick's classic vision, expanding the legacy of trauma, addiction, and psychic power known as “the shining.” The film stars Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Moulin Rouge!) as Dan Torrance, now an adult still scarred by the events at the Overlook Hotel. Struggling with alcoholism and inner demons, Dan finds new purpose when he meets Abra Stone, a young girl with powerful psychic abilities, played by Kyliegh Curran (I Can I Will I Did, Secrets of Sulphur Springs). Together, they must face the terrifying cult known as The True Knot, led by the mesmerizing and sinister Rose the Hat, played by Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Dune). The Director's Cut, running nearly three hours, deepens the emotion, world-building, and psychological horror — offering fans the definitive version of Flanagan's masterpiece. Hello and welcome to our spooky season. This year we have four shows for you. First up we have a short Carry On Streaming Halloween special. Short because we have one major TV streaming recommendation for you. It is It: Welcome To Derry. Yes, Pennywise is back! For the 8 part series we travel back in time to 1962 where Pennywise (once again played by the excellent Bill Skarsgard) is up to his old tricks of terrorising the town of Derry. This TV show, the first of three planned series, also includes the character of Dick Halloran who later became the chef in that other classic King tale The Shining. Don't worry this isn't a case of cramming in as many Stephen King references as they can into one show, Dick Halloran was actually in the original IT novel, in a very scary flashback story. Dec has high hopes for this one, and Jeff cannot wait to see it in all it's horror glory. As for Graham, well, I'm afraid his horror leanings stop at something called Kpop Demon Hunters. No idea what that is, but I suspect it's not going to be a sort of modern day Exorcist reboot. For those that want more horror for their Halloween, we do discuss some old favourites like Midnight Mass and some up to the minute movies like Clown In A Cornfield and Black Phone 2. Something for everyone there (even Graham). Enjoy this seasonal special and we will see you tomorrow for the next in our Halloween offering. Bye for now.
Put down your briefcase and put on your dancing shoes, everybody, because today on Script Apart – a podcast about the first-draft secrets of great movies and TV shows – Mike Flanagan is back, tap-dancing through the end times with me in celebration of The Life Of Chuck. As I put it in my feature for Empire Magazine earlier this year, when I covered the movie's theatrical release, the phrase “feel-good” isn't often associated with the apocalypse. Nor, to be honest, with Mike's work in general, as one of the streaming era's premier fright-masters – a writer-director whose output so far have included vampire priests (Midnight Mass), acid showers (Fall Of The House Of Usher) and some of the most harrowing small-screen deaths in recent memory (The Haunting Of Hill House, I am still not over you)."Feel-good" is not how you'd typically describe the icon of literary terror he's becoming closely associated with, either. The Life Of Chuck is the third time Mike has adapted the great Stephen King, after Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep (he also has new adaptations of Carrie and The Dark Tower on the way). But The Life Of Chuck is, nonetheless, as “feel-good” as apocalypse stories come. It stars Tom Hiddleston as an ordinary-looking man who mysteriously begins appearing on billboards as a divorced couple's leafy suburban existence is interrupted by a series of globe-threatening disasters. The mystery of “Who is Chuck?” propels a story more still and sentimental than many viewers might expect from Flanagan, from King, from the end of the world. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, Mike calls in from the set of Carrie, which he's in production on at the moment, to break down the film in extensive detail. We get into the meaning of the Carl Sagan-inspired monologue that Mike added to King's source text. We talk about the one detail in the film's transcendent dance sequence that breaks my heart just to think about. And of course, we touch on that moving, ambiguous ending and how it fits into a body of work that often involves locked rooms. Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Send us a textEver watch a movie that feels like it was built out of wild props and late-night dreams—and then realize no one bothered to build the world around it? We dive headfirst into Nothing but Trouble, tracing how a killer cast (Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, John Candy) and a bonkers premise wobble into an unappealing blur of gadgets, traps, and gross-out gags. From the courtroom rollercoaster and the infamous Bone Stripper to a Hawaiian Punch dinner and a cameo from Digital Underground, we break down why spectacle without stakes falls flat—and where the film accidentally shows flashes of the sharper movie it could've been.We talk tone, pacing, and the delicate math of horror-comedy: why absurdity only lands when the world has rules, how character choices give jokes friction, and what happens when you skip setup and chase set pieces. Aykroyd's judge hints at a better blueprint—a lonely showman versus a gleeful sadist—and we explore how a few structural changes could have turned Vulcanvania into a memorable cult playground rather than a cautionary tale. Along the way, we connect threads to House of Blues, appreciate the handful of precision laughs Chevy sneaks in, and call out John Candy's split roles and the film's most head-scratching creations. Then we zoom out. Gen V returns with Hamish Linklater's delicious menace, Midnight Mass gets its flowers for character-first dread, and we compare comedy fibers across The Office, Parks and Rec, The Paper, and the Frasier reboot—why some ensembles feel warm and others punch down. It all loops back to the craft: world-building is an engine; jokes and scares are cargo. If the engine sputters, nothing arrives.Stick around for a celebratory tease: next week we're queuing up Broken Arrow for Todd's birthday. Hit follow, share this with your favorite cult-cinema friend, and drop us a note—what one change would fix Nothing but Trouble? Happy Tuesday, Everyone! This week, I sat down with my new friend Rahul Kohli to chat, while on a break from filming Mike Flanagan's new show Carrie. In addition to co-starring with me on the new project, Rahul has found so many new fans as a heartthrob in Mike's other recent shows, including playing Owen in The Haunting of Bly Manor, Sheriff Hassan in Midnight Mass and Leo Usher in The Fall of The House of Usher. You may also know him from his roles as Ravi Chakrabarti in iZombie and Bri in The Life of Chuck, as well as his prolific video game voice work. We had a lot of fun talking about how he fell in love with movies and video games, while growing up as a South Asian kid in the UK and he found his way as an actor without a well-worn path to follow. This conversation really feels like two friends sitting down for coffee, getting real about the life of a working actor— from how to use social media, to embracing insecurity and learning to let go and trust your director. I feel much closer to Rahul after this conversation, and I think you will too! Be sure to stick around after our chat for the Hindsight, where my producer Jeph and I talk about the episode, share details about upcoming live shows and vent about an airplane nemesis!
