Can small acts of love really transform your relationships? Discover how aligning your actions with the teachings of Jesus Christ can bring profound changes to your personal life, and learn about the power of sincere devotion. We explore Proverbs 14 to contrast the wise with the foolish and reveal the importance of understanding and righteousness in navigating life's path. Dive deep into how authentic relationships with God and loved ones can be nurtured through faith. As we navigate the landscape of faith in the modern West, we confront the divide between acknowledging and mocking sin. We discuss the transformative impact of recognizing your imperfections and the importance of accepting Jesus Christ as your guide. Our conversation challenges the stagnation that comes from mere talk without action, highlighting how even the smallest responsible acts rooted in love can make a lasting difference. Fear of the Lord is redefined as a reverent love, similar to the respect one holds for a loving parent, affirming God's immense love for us all.The episode takes a crucial turn as we examine the relationship between Christianity and education in America. We trace the historical significance of biblical principles in the nation's founding and their gradual removal from the education system. Our discussion touches on key figures and historical shifts, questioning the interpretations of the First Amendment and advocating for a return to a biblically-centered educational framework. Join us as we call for a restoration of God's role in all aspects of life, urging a focus on divine guidance to instill lasting, positive societal change.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

“Why can't anybody hear me?!”The Fascinating Origins of a Classic Horror FilmIn the early 1960s, director Herk Harvey stumbled upon an abandoned amusement park in Salt Lake City, sparking the idea for what would become the classic horror film Carnival of Souls. With a shoestring budget and a cast of mostly unknown actors, Harvey set out to capture the haunting atmosphere of that desolate park. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the One-and-Done series with a conversation about Harvey's 1962 film Carnival of Souls.Exploring the Liminal Space Between Life and DeathOur discussion of Carnival of Souls delves into the film's unique storytelling approach and its exploration of the space between life and death. We examine how the protagonist, Mary Henry (played by Candace Hilligoss), navigates this liminal space after surviving a tragic car accident, and how her experiences blur the lines between reality and the supernatural.Throughout our conversation, we touch on:The effective use (overuse?) of organ music and striking visual imageryThe ambiguity of certain scenes and their room for interpretationThe film's influence on later horror moviesA Timeless Classic That Continues to CaptivateDespite its low budget and relatively unknown cast, Carnival of Souls has endured as a classic of the horror genre. Its haunting imagery, ambiguous storytelling, and exploration of existential themes continue to captivate audiences decades after its initial release. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Join us for a tour of Bob Dylan's professional life in May and June of 1962 as we travel "A Highway of Diamonds" back 60 years ago to the month and visit Dylan as he records a Broadside show on topical songwriting on WBAI in New York along with Cynthia Gooding, Pete Seeger, Izzy Young, Gil Turner, and Sis Cunningham and as he bids adieu to his love from a New York ship dock. A 60th anniversary is a diamond anniversary, so this week, and throughout the year, we periodically take a trip on "a highway of diamonds," exploring the events of Bob Dylan's career sixty years ago. In "20 Pounds of Headlines," we bring you news from the world of Bob Dylan, both in May and June of 1962 and May and June of 2022, including a special airing of three songs from the past week from Dylan's touring of the Pacific Northwest. In "Who Did It Better?" we ask you to vote and tell us who did "The Death of Emmett Till" better: Bob Dylan as performed on WBAI in May of 1962 or Coulson, Dean, McGuinness, Flint as recorded ten years later in 1972?
