Date Night In with Dave and Jess

In this episode Dave & Lady Jessica watch Dune on Hulu, which they pair with the Spice Trade cocktail created by the Educated Barfly.  Is this epic sci-fi fantasy film worth checking out on the small screen, or is its 2.5 hour runtime equivalent to placing your hand in the agony box? While discussing their reaction to the movie, the couple also discuss the classic novel that inspired the movie, and Lady Jessica provides her comparison of Trader Joe's select bags to the spice on Arrakis.  Dave & Jess dive into the numerous languages used in the film, and ponder who exactly one disembarks a sandworm after riding one.  Other topics of discussion include whether the movie works on its own despite it being a part 1, and how it stacks up against its sequel. Thanks for listening! pWotD Episode 2498: Dune (2021 film) Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 266,929 views on Monday, 4 March 2024 our article of the day is Dune (2021 film).Dune (titled onscreen as Dune: Part One) is a 2021 American epic science fiction film directed and co-produced by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth. It is the first of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Set in the distant future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The ensemble cast includes Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. The film is the third adaptation of Dune, following David Lynch's 1984 film and John Harrison's 2000 television miniseries. After an unsuccessful attempt by Paramount Pictures to produce a new adaptation, Legendary Entertainment acquired the Dune film and television rights in 2016, with Villeneuve signing on as director in February 2017. Production contracts were secured only for the first film, relying on its success before a sequel would be produced. Principal photography took place from March to July 2019 at locations including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi.Dune was scheduled for a late 2020 release but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, before its international release on September 15; it was then released in United States theaters and streaming on HBO Max on October 22. Dune was a box office success, grossing almost $435 million on a $165 million budget. It was well received by critics and audiences with praise for Villeneuve's direction, screenplay, the visual effects, ambition, costume design, Hans Zimmer's musical score, cinematography, and faithfulness to the source material. The film won six awards at the 94th Academy Awards and was nominated in four other categories, including Best Picture, in addition to receiving numerous other accolades. A sequel, Dune: Part Two, was released in March 2024. In February 2024, Villeneuve said the script for the production of a third part was "almost finished".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:28 UTC on Tuesday, 5 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Dune (2021 film) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Ruth Neural.

When it comes to sci-fi in the real world, the idea that we'd add an extra day at the end of February, every 4 years, would rank amongst the ideas that sound like they come out of a Frank Herbert novel. Which is appropriate considering that the sequel to Denis Villeneuve's adaption of the novel of the same name, 'Dune', releases across the globe today on February 29th, 2024. To celebrate the occasion, Julian and Jeremy look back at the first installment in the series from 2021 and deliver their in-depth review (with a fun "Transformers" sidebar for good measure) as a bonus, publicly available, installment of the ToB Film Club. Something typically reserved for Patrons only, but what the heck, it's a leap year! We recommend taking a hit of some Spice Mélange before diving in. It will help you make more sense of all of Paul's visions and set you up nicely to transition directly into the sequel over the weekend.

In the first episode of our Future Wars cycle, we discuss the new Gareth Edwards sci-fi epic, The Creator, and Denis Villeneuve's recent attempt of adapting Dune onto film. Our Future Wars cycle is focused on how the conflicts of tomorrow were depicted in the past. Over this 8 episode series, we will review 16 films spanning from the 1950s through today that attempted to predict how mankind might find itself at odds with the world and itself. The first episode covers the 2020s with The Creator and Dune. Gareth Edwards gained famed after toiling away as a video editor at the BBC with Monsters, a shoestring sci-fi film. Edwards was immediately called up to the majors to helm two blockbuster budgets with Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One (2016). The results were decidedly mixed, and Gareth found himself longing for a simpler way to shoot a big movie. The Creator looks like a very well done 200 million dollar film, but it only cost 80. Technical achievements aside, the story attempts to unravel the very present day conflict of Artificial Intelligence and what role it should play in our lives. Dune is a great counter film to The Creator as both films tackle a large scale war of tomorrow, but the approaches are diametrically opposed. The world created by Edwards feels warm, lived in, and extremely perilous. Dune, locked into the imagined worlds of Frank Herbert's book, is depicted by Denis Villeneuve as cold, spartan, and fateful. The Creator feels entrapped in the present, and Dune feels entombed by the past.

The film is the third adaptation of Dune following David Lynch's 1984 film and John Harrison's 2000 television miniseries. After an unsuccessful attempt by Paramount Pictures to produce a new adaptation, Legendary Entertainment acquired the Dune film and television rights in 2016, with Villeneuve signing on as director in February 2017. Production contracts were only secured for the first film, relying on its success before a sequel would be greenlit. Principal photography took place from March to July 2019 at locations including Budapest, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi.

Grab a stillsuit and maybe a thumper or two because this week we are taking the outerworlders of Arrakis to the world of BRBR with 2021's sci-fi revamp of Dune! While House Atreides seems to be played into a deadly trap, the Duke's son sets out not only to understand this political pitfall but his strange, futuristic visions as well. Y'all this was once more a BRBR First Watch and I can't believe I've been sleeping on this one for nearly two years! Not only was it visually stunning but the story, action and overall plot of the film was absolutely fantastic. Being based off of an 11 book series dating back to 1965 and its original counterpart released in 1984 of the same name, this revamp was bound to make a splash. Or, really make a mess of people's floors because sand, right? While it's a bit to take in at first as they set up the characters and storyline, it's absolutely worth the watch if you've never seen it. With a stellar cast, some outstanding visuals and plenty of interesting characters, the sandy stretches of Arrakis will leave you wanting more and probably a little thirsty. Can Paul Atreides avenge his father, make sense of his visions and leave these bad reviewers for the sandworms? Tune in to find out!   If you enjoyed the episode, please rate and share! It goes such a long way and I am so grateful for all of the support. And hey, if you do leave a review of the show, you will be featured as well! How neat is that?
