This week Shanna and The Doctor are catching up on two new episodes of Supergirl "Hope for Tomorrow" and "Nightmare in National City".  In "Hope for Tomorrow" Nyxly is still trying to find the totems and realizes that trying to inspire hope is for the birds (ed. note: #relatable) so she'll just let Kara get the totem and force her to hand it over. Nyxly uses the only leverage she can think of, kidnapping William who is the official scribe of the Super Friends. After trying (and failing) a bunch of times, Supergirl and the rest of the team manage to avert a potential nuclear war which gives the world a glimmer of hope and allows them to acquire the Hope totem. Supergirl decides to destroy the totem so Nyxly can never assemble the All-Stone but Nxyly receives an anonymous gift that may turn the tide back in her favor.  This takes us right into "Nightmare in National City". Nia has been searching for the Dream totem and she finds out that her sister Maeve took all of their mom's research books and ran away after their father found out that Maeve told Nia she's not a real woman. Nia has to work with her sister who is a wealth of information even if she is a b*tch. Meanwhile, Nyxly is working with a new mech suit courtesy of Lex Luthor, and when she manages to grab the Dream totem by the skin of her teeth, Lex uses it to reappear. Oh Nyxly, if you thought your father was a problem, you have no idea.  We talk totems, Alex's new role as an adoptive mom, and Kara's burnout all on this week's podcast.    Like what you hear? All is quiet at the tower. Brainy and Lena have secured the courage and humanity totems with a combination of Earth magic and Coluan calculations. This leaves Kara to focus on the interview of a lifetime. The leaders of Kaznia and Corto Maltese have agreed to sit down and decide on terms of a peace agreement.  Kara has secured access for Catco in this historic event. Needless to say, Andrea is over the moon about the news. Nia has returned empty handed from Parthas. Maeve took all their mother's books and research and fled to parts unknown. Brainy suggests that Nia have a healthy breakfast including her greens, give her mind over to her dream powers and let her visions lead the way. Meanwhile, Nyxly is also looking for the dream totem. She breaks into a research facility where a scientist has built a machine to harness dream power. She uses the gauntlet from her secret admirer to open a portal to the dream realm. What escapes in the interim will cause much havoc in the city and will need to be contained. Nia's dreams lead her to a university to speak to a professor there. Upon her arrival at the office door from her dreams, Nia comes face to face with her sister Maeve. This is the first time the girls have been together since Maeve insulted Nia at their mother's funeral.  Despite the pain that has been caused the sisters set out to the dream realm to save the next totem from Nyxly's grasp. Downtown a nightmare monster is tormenting National City.  Lena reprograms some of Lex's old satellites to project a dome over half the city. This is necessary to contain the creature who was steps away from causing a nuclear catastrophe. The Super Friends have saved the city, but the Governor does not see it that way. She sees a group of people who leap into action before consulting those in charge. She only sees a large barrier that is separating people from their homes and jobs. Also, parents from their children. The National Guard mobilizes against the dome nearly causing the monster to not be vanquished back to its realm. Nia and Maeve are still working to decode which path leads to the totem.  Maeve's jealousy takes hold again for what she feels is a birthright lost. I am glad to see that after such a deep hurt on both sides the healing is not instantaneous. However, their lack of solidarity in this moment cost them the dream totem. Needless to say, when a quiet day turned into chaos Kara missed her interview. William reminded her of advice from Cat Grant. “You can have it all but not necessarily all at the same time “. Maybe right now is the season for Supergirl to shine. Kara turns in her resignation to Andrea. Nyxly's suit is badly damaged from her battle with Dreamer.  The AI within the suit asks to hold the dream totem. A few seconds later Lex Luthor materialized in the room. What is he doing here?  What is his role in the story?  Will he ever pay for sending our beloved Maid of Steel to the Phantom Zone?

Supergirl and Nyxly have one totem each.  Nia has gone to Parthas in search of the Dream totem so Kara heads to the Netherlands to try and stop the Imp from getting her hands on the Hope totem. Nyxly fails the Hope gauntlet but still manages to create chaos at peace talks taking place within The Hague. Meanwhile Alex and Kelly welcome Esme into their home. We learn that the little girl is a species of alien that can mimic the powers of others. It must be really overwhelming to acclimate to one superpower let alone adjust to a countless number of them depending on what type of alien is around at that time.  I am really glad this episode illustrated some struggles with this brand-new family. It makes the story richer to show Kelly, Alex, and Esme working through struggles versus showing a perfect family right off the bat.  I also like the comparisons made to Kara's adoption which I think makes Alex uniquely qualified to care for this little girl. Mitch fashions a device for the Courage totem that restores a portion of Nyxly's power. She strips the diplomats at the summit of their courage which results in a widespread distrust among the world leaders. Nyxly is about to cause a nuclear catastrophe on Earth and the Superfriends must fly in to save the day. Nyxly must come up with a new plan to obtain the totem. Nyxly feels that she cannot beat Supergirl in the gauntlet for hope. She will let Kara win the totem and then use blackmail to get it from her.  This leads the Imp princess to kidnap William. The quest for the totems feels like a truly epic battle. Something that is not easily won in 42 minutes of TV. The quest challenges each one of our characters. Their struggles draw me in. The way they help each other honors Supergirl's theme of “stronger together”. Ultimately the team decides that one of the totems must be destroyed so that the All Stone can never be reassembled.  Supergirl hurls the Hope totem into the sun.  Kara is confident that hope can be restored to the world without this small physical representation.  This made me wonder if the totem would integrate into our sun and perhaps cause it to shine down some extra hope on all of humanity. That would be the type of legacy I would love to see for this series. Supergirl made the world just a little more hopeful than before she arrived.

This episode was originally broadcast on September 28, 2016. With Multiversity Comics heading into the home stretch of its 40 Days of Supergirl celebration, Greg decided it would be neat to have a little Supergirl discussion in conjunction with that. But with Mike unavailable, Greg turned to friend of the show Paul Lai (from the excellent podcast The Paul List) to come on and give the episode his specific brand of considered and researched opinion. The duo focus on the Maid of Steel's origins and the era in which she sprung from the Kryptonian rocket ship, but the conversation manages to touch on other parts of her career, from Crisis to DC Rebirth, and appearances in other media as well. All that and more awaits you in this week's episode! Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth's surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. You can also follow Mike and Greg on Twitter.  Stay safe and enjoy your funny books.

This week on Supergirl, Nyxly is after the totem of humanity and this gauntlet is like no other because while the totem draws the humanity out of the humans around Nyxly, it also channels all that humanity into her. Losing their humanity turns National City into a city full of Karens and Chads with everyone displaying their absolute worst selves. Even the dream couple that Kelly places one of her foster kids with turns out to be the worst when they're caught by an angry mob. And even though Nxyly has some moments of empathy in this episode, ultimately, she doesn't seem to be fully internalizing the lessons she's learning from her totem trials and it seems like that's going to be the key to truly defeating her brother and father.  Lena, on the other hand, is learning a lot about herself as she tries to master the magic she's inherited from her mother. It's a struggle for her because magic relies on intuition and feeling rather than facts and figures but with William's help, she's able to see past her frustration.  William, you ask? He's finally embedded with the Super Friends and he's granted exclusive access to their headquarters and behind the scenes of their missions. Initially, Kara and the others want to keep certain details of their missions under wraps but they realize that telling the public what's happening will garner more trust than holding back. Andrea (who has low-key become a J. Jonah Jameson-level villain) is still pushing for more. If she keeps going, she's going to end up causing serious damage in her pursuit to sell newspapers.  We talk about all this and more below. And let us know your predictions for the end of Supergirl because we're looking for some good theories about how this wraps up.    Like what you hear? The quest for the totems continues. Nyxly tracks the Humanity Totem to the pocket of a martial arts fighter in town for a match. The imp easily steals the item and wonders why there was no gauntlet to pass to wield its powers. The citizens in the vicinity of the arena erupt into violence with their humanity stripped from them. The Superfriends game night is abruptly interrupted by Nyxly's glee at an easy victory. Kara's psychic connection to the imp continues to be an asset. William has used his friendship with Kara to win himself entrance into the Tower. He is going to write stories about the Superfriends. This should make Andrea very happy. J'onn must lay some ground rules to make sure that missions and secret identities are not compromised. Lena continues to work on her magic. I love that she continues to look at this new skill in a logical way. This honors her long standing character trait of the scientist that we know and love. Nia says that the way Lena speaks of magic reminds her of dream interpretation and offers to help. I really like the deepening friendship that is forming between these two characters. Nothing in life is free and Nyxly learns there is a price to pay for activating the Humanity Totem. All the goodness and compassion that left the people of National City is now flooding Nyxly's system.  It is all these emotions that stop her from capturing the next totem of Hope. Green Butterfly's favorite part of the episode was getting to check back in on Esme. The cute and charming alien girl with a heart for justice. At first glance when Kelly arrives it looks like Esme has found some happiness.   However, when her foster parents are faced with a heartless hoard, they leave the little girl outside the door. They beg her to use her fire breathing power to defend them.  This is a power Esme has but has not learned how to utilize and control. She is left alone scared facing the angry mob. Kelly and Alex rush to rescue her. Will Kelly and Alex give Esme a forever home?  This butterfly sure hopes so.   Who better to raise and protect this little alien girl than the woman who shared a bedroom with one for years?  Seems like the right choice to me. Nyxly relinquished the Humanity Totem. All that compassion is getting in the way of her ultimate goal of taking over the world.   Now she has her sights set back on the Netherlands and the totem of Hope.  Supergirl and her team are focusing on the totem of Dreams. Who will win this race?  I think it is still too early to say. We will have to tune in next week and find out. Until then this is your eye in the sky Green Butterfly wishing you a Super Week!

The Superhero Show Show #396It Doesn't Bother Supergirl to be CourageousThe Taste Buds are checking in with Supergirl on an all-new Superhero Show Show! With Mike still on vacation, and Cassie having no intentions to do the show with just Ryan, she makes a couple of calls this time. The first call she makes is Katelynn. Obviously. But she also reaches out to old-school guest and fan favorite David Lumb! What are they going to talk about during this momentous occasion? Why Supergirl, of course! It's a been a million hot minutes since Kara was in the hot seat, so the Taste Buds check in one last time before her impending season finale to catch-up and see how things are going. Supergirl hasn't been the strongest show after the last couple of seasons. Has this episode made a return to those fun and furious early days? With the 400th episode of this podcast looming on them, Cassie and the Boyz have some housework to do as well. First up is the continuation of the Bracket 400, and it's the DC portion! The kings of network television, the shows that are based on Detective Comics Comics have been the bread and butter for this podcast since its inception. Now it's time to move on from 8 of them, in rude fashion. Can Supergirl move on the DC Elite 8? Or will they just take this opportunity to keep talking about how much they liked Watchmen? They're also trying to get rid of all of the Shushies, and this week it's Best Supporting Actor. Last year's winner was one of the few non-Watchmen, with Luke Wilson's Pat Doogan taking it down. Does he have what he takes to beat Watchmen during a year with no Watchmen?
