A woman in that city who had been widowed kept coming to the judge and saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.' For a time the judge refused, but finally the judge thought, ‘I care little for God or people, but this woman won't leave me alone. I'd better give her the protection she seeks, or she'll keep coming and wear me out!'” Jesus said, “Listen to what this corrupt judge is saying. Won't God then do justice to the chosen who call out day and night? Will God delay long over them? I tell you, God will give them swift justice. “But when the Promised One comes, will faith be found anywhere on earth?”

To increase awareness of the domestic violence prevalent in all communities, Penny McKay, graduate of The Fight Back Project, asked me if we could share her story today. I want to make it very clear that Penny asked me if she could share her story in the hope that it might help someone listening. I do not and will not ever ask my clients to share their stories, this was her choice. MJ's guest today is Master Sommelier, Award-winning TV host and Author, Andrea Robinson. Andrea is one of only 28 women in the world to hold the title of Master Sommelier. Andrea is the first woman designated as Best Sommelier in the United States by the Sommelier Society of America. She is the author of four top-selling books on wine and food, a 3-time James Beard Award winner and award-winning lifestyle television host. She was named Outstanding Wine & Spirits Professional by the James Beard Foundation in 2002 and was selected by Bon Appetit Magazine as Wine & Spirits Professional of The Year in 2004. Andrea and her husband John are creators of a line of wine stemware called The ONE (™). Andrea has created innovative and award-winning wine and education programs for fine dining restaurants at Starwood Hotels and as a Dean of the International Culinary Center culinary school in New York City (of which she is a chef graduate). Andrea now curates Delta Air Lines' wine program (since 2007) and consults for Norwegian Cruise Line.Growing up in Texas, Southern Indiana, North Dakota and Florida, Andrea's childhood certainly prepared her for her life post college. In this episode, Adena and Kara talk to Kristy Carter, author and principal investigator of a newly released study about women of color business owners and entrepreneurs in Arkansas. The research was conducted by the University of Central Arkansas and the report commissioned by the Women's Foundation of Arkansas. Women of color open businesses at extraordinary rates. The qualitative study explores why. This episode's Turn to Your Neighbor feature is Shunqetta Cunningham, the CEO and Lead Grant Strategist of KHARIS Grants and Services. Pull Me Over sweater – This was my Christmas Day cast on, though I haven’t picked it up at all since then!  Pattern by Andrea Black, using leftover Universal Yarns cotton that are leftovers from knitting my husband a sweater many, many years ago.  Slice of Summer (Ravelry) – my New Year’s caston using BaH yarns shawl ball Ozone crochet top (Ravelry) – restarted it now that my crochet skills are better; already half way through the band of hexies that go around your ribcage Stash My family got me a subscription to Hipstrings Cotton Club!  I am so happy to be a member again, I looooove her colorways.  I got 2 2-oz braids (technically it was the December shipment) that are beautiful blends of purple, blue, brown, mauve and brown called Moody and On the Horizon.  I’m thinking of pulling these 2 apart and making a chain ply, but not sure. For Christmas I got 3 colors of Nomad Yarn’s hand-dyed Gelato series.  This time I got the green, blue and purple to go with the pink, orange and yellow that I bought during a virtual fiber event last summer.  Now I have a whole gorgeous rainbow and I need to decide what to do with it! If you have any events you’d like me to share please email me windsweptmonique@gmail.com   On the Run We took our annual New Year’s Day hike.  It’s normally a big group event in our town – groups of 30-ish people led by a guide on trails in our town.  Of course it was a bit different this year.  We hiked by ourselves on a new-to-us trail behind our local agricultural high school.  Lovely trail plus the kids loved seeing the cows and horses.  Other people on the trail but everyone maintained a safe distance and wore masks. Belly dancing - great for bad knees and so much fun!

Star Wars scarf (Ravelry) for Thing 1 – One section left, plan to finish later today.  Still loving the new hexagonal needles from Indian Lake Artisans.  I’m using Truboo by Lion Brand, a 100% bamboo yarn in white and dark gray.  Pattern is a series of free charts by Jessica Goddard. The ninth century was a time of trial for many Christians in the eastern Roman empire, the lands today remembered as Byzantium. Once an empire stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to Palestine, Byzantium was in the early stages a steady decline of influence that ultimately ended in their extinction.It had been in the 7th century that the rift between east and west began to take solid form. The Council of Trullo, accepted by the east but rejected by the west, codified many of the variant practices between east and west such as the celibacy of priests and the use of unleavened bread in the eucharist. And it wasn’t far into the future that this rift would become permanent.It was also in the 7th century that Islam took control of large amounts of territory in northern Africa and the Middle East, including the Holy Lands, that was previously under Byzantine control.Moreover, it was during the 8th and 9th century that the iconoclast controversy showed persecution of the Church, especially the monastic communities, by the Byzantine state.After centuries as the lead religion in the eastern Roman empire, the Church began to feel persecuted. The alliance between the Roman government and the Byzantine Church was proving to be temporary and unstable.It is in the midst of these trials, monks at the Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai in Egypt, deep in the heart of the Islamic empire, were granted a vision which led them to find the incorrupt body of St. Katherine the All-Wise of Alexandria, who lived and died in the pre-Christian, early 4th century empire, and had been buried centuries earlier on the mountain. The Egyptian monks were living in an un-Christian world after centuries of living in a Christian empire, and here was St. Katherine, a hero from another time, a time before there was a Christian empire. Likely because so many Byzantine Christians could see themselves in her story, the life of St. Katherine quickly became one of the most popular saints of all time. To this day the Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai is referred to at St. Katherine’s, Mount Sinai itself is labelled on maps as Mount Saint Catherine, and Katherine remains one of our most popular saint’s names.The story of St. Katherine reads almost like a fairy tale. We all know the outline of this story. It goes something like this: “Once upon a time a beautiful princess, nearly perfect in every way, was trying to find her perfect prince. The princess caught the attention of an evil ruler whose authority is threatened by her in some way and he tries to kill her. Ultimately, her perfect prince arrives on the scene, saves her, and they live happily ever after.” Sound familiar? Listen for these tropes in the story of St. Katherine. They are all there. Some of them are spot on. And others are turned on their head to show their absurdity in the face of Christian truth.St. Katherine is said to have been the most beautiful princess in all the lands surrounding Alexandria in Egypt. She is also said to have been very well-educated. This is not as strange as it sounds. Middle eastern culture at the time was actually relatively progressive, allowing women to be educated, own property, and have legal standing in ways that were not permitted in Greco-Roman society. Add this to her aristocratic roots and you can see where she might have had access to one of the greatest educations the world had to offer. In fact, her home Alexandria, famous as once being the home of one the greatest libraries in the world, was still largely considered the home to the world’s most influential thinkers. To be educated in Alexandria at that time would being educated at Oxford or Harvard today.So Katherine was beautiful and smart, and the as the story goes she could not find a man worthy of her. Princes from around the world sought her hand, but she had no interest in them. They doubtless told her that she was beautiful and said how much they appreciated her wisdom, but she remained unimpressed. She told her parents that until they could find a man as handsome and wise as she, she would prefer to remain unmarried. This was, of course, a worry for her mother and father who strongly desired for her to get married.Now Katherine’s mother was a secret Christian. At this crossroads in her life she sought council at a nearby monastery. The abbot invited her to bring Katherine to see him. Katherine speaks with the Abbot about her decision not to wed any who are not her equal in beauty and wisdom. The abbot does not scold her for her pride and arrogance or insist that she be obedient to her mother and father. Instead the abbot takes this opening to tell her that he knows of just such a prince and that he thinks he might be able to introduce them, though it might take a little work. Katherine is intrigued by this potential solution to her dilemma and agrees to whatever work might be necessary. The abbot offers her an icon of the Theotokos, tells her to pray to the icon unceasingly, and that if she does this the Theotokos will lead her to the promised wise and powerful prince.We are not told how Katherine feels about this task she has been given to do, but we are told that she prays all night to the icon until finally, in a dream, the Theotokos speaks. Mary says to the child in her arms, “Behold your handmaiden, Katherine.” And what do you think happens? Remember the many courtiers and all the praise they had heaped upon Katherine? The Christ-child does the exact opposite. He turns his head away from her in disgust, saying, “She is filthy and ignorant. I will have nothing to do with her.” Katherine was taken aback by this greeting. She returns to the abbot and relates her vision. The abbot explains that Christ is indeed the prince of whom he had spoken, but that this prince sees her interior rather than her exterior and that she has much work to do in her heart before she can be truly married to this prince.Inspired by this challenge, Katherine becomes a catechumen, studies, and is ultimately baptized, becoming a Christian. We are told that sometime after this, Katherine had a second vision where Christ again appeared to her, this time gifting her a ring, and that from that time forward she lived as if she were betrothed to Christ. Notice how this turns the fairy tale trope of the perfect princess marrying the perfect prince on its head. All Christians are called to find their true love and support in Christ alone. Spouses can help with this, but they are not the answer to all of life’s problems.One day after this the emperor came to visit Alexandria and in celebration of his arrival sacrifices to the Roman gods were ordered to be made by all. Many of the Christians refused to participate, and those that were caught resisting were tortured. This stirred Katherine’s conscience and she knew that as royalty she would be allowed to speak out in a way than the other Christians would not. And so she made her way to the court to confront the emperor about his treatment of her fellow Christians.Katherine is ultimately allowed to stand before the emperor, where she shows all due respect, prostrating herself before the emperor, before confessing her own Christianity and asking the emperor to cease his persecutions. Katherine goes on to recount to the emperor how many of the philosophers of the Greco-Roman tradition themselves reviled the Gods and how others considered them merely allegories, attempting to show that Christians were not alone in this notion.We are told that because of her eloquence that the emperor was speechless in response. But instead of learning from Katherine, he saw Katherine as a threat. Why was she a threat? For one of the simplest reasons. As Christ foretold, “It is easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” The emperor was in love with his wealth and power, and Christians were a threat to his power. Christians did not honor the emperor as a god, but rather worshiped Jesus Christ as their Lord and God. Christians did not respect class or power, but rather masters and slaves ate at table together. In this way Katherine was a prime example of the threat of Christianity, a wealthy patrician willing to risk persecution on behalf of the poor.Rather than stop the persecutions, the emperor insisted that every philosopher in the region try to win this argument with Katherine. And remember this was Alexandria – there were philosophers on every corner! And so we are told that scores of them came out to debate with Katherine.We are also told that she bested all of them. And, of course, her strong comportment was in many ways due to her education. You could say God had been preparing her for this moment even before she knew who He was. In one of the versions of the story the Angel Michael visits Katherine before her ordeal and tells her that the Lord will give her the strength and wisdom to endure. Again, it is not a white knight on his steed who sweeps in to save her, but it is the Lord who gives her what she needs to face the emperor.But I want to tell you something more. Each of us are given opportunities to speak about our faith and we can often keep silent because we feel unprepared. I want to tell you that I don’t think she simply outsmarted these men. The truth is that these philosophers could throw facts and theories and histories and traditions at her until they were blue in the face, but none of that mattered. Katherine was not defending a theory or a tradition, she was witnessing to a personal experience. She had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and no philosophical theory can assail that. So, pray. Purify your heart. If you have a relationship with your Lord and God and Savior, when you come to these moments in your life, He will give you the words to say. And I’m telling you right now the words will not be about Trinitarian dogma or the two natures of Christ. They will be words of understanding, love, and compassion. These are the words that lead others to Christ. Katherine herself was not converted by dogmas. She was converted by a personal encounter with Christ.We are told that not only does Katherine withstand all of the philosophers, but that many of them were converted by her testimony. This infuriates the emperor and he orders Katherine thrown in prison and all of the converted philosophers to be killed. While Katherine is in prison, we are told that she is visited by the emperor’s wife and the captain of the royal guard. Katherine’s patient endurance of affliction is an inspiration to both the empress and the captain of the guard. Both are converted, along with a large number of the royal guard. We see here even more than before that Katherine’s witness is not her educated words but rather her life itself. She is able to be a witness to the power of Christ by willingly accepting persecution on behalf of the truth, just as her Lord had done centuries before. Imperial power always amounts to the power to prevent or bestow Death. The Lord of Life has overcome Death.Orthodox theologian John Behr suggests that in the early Church it was understood that we would only become fully human as we united ourselves to Christ in the act of martyrdom. Among others, he sites St. Ignatius who wrote as he journeyed toward his own martyrdom that, “It is better for me to die in Christ Jesus than to be king over the ends of the earth. I seek him who died for our sake. I desire him who rose for us. Birth-pangs are upon me. Suffer me, my brethren….Suffer me to receive the pure light; when I shall have arrived there, I shall be a human being. Suffer me to follow the example of the passion of my God.” St. Ignatius sees himself as becoming fully human as he approaches his death where he will unite himself to Christ.We are born slave or free, rich and poor, citizen or foreigner, male or female. We are born divided from one another in a million different ways. But we are all called to unity in Christ. And this unity is gained not by force, but by humility. And this humility will often include acceptance of persecution, for in this world it is common to persecute those who are different. But as Christians we are called to react to this hate and anger with love and patience and prayer. Thus both St. Ignatius and St. Katherine transcend their stations in life and become no longer partially human, but rather fully human in Christ. St. Katherine’s peaceful acceptance of tribulation, her willingness to use her status as royalty to defend her fellow Alexandrians, rather than hide herself away safety as she surely could have, is a witness to the fact that death holds no sway over her. She is not afraid of death at the hand of the Emperor, her emperor has overcome death.Of course when the emperor discovers his wife and his guards have become Christians, he orders them tortured and killed. And he is about at his wits end with Katherine. He makes two more attempts at winning this battle. First he offers her a place at his side as the new empress. Like Christ in the wilderness, Katherine refuses this temptation to rule the world. And so then the emperor threatens to torture Katherine on a specially devised wheel. The wheel is described in some pretty gruesome detail that I won’t go into here – this particular princess story probably wouldn’t get a G rating – but Katherine shows courage and just as she is about to be put upon the wheel it is miraculously destroyed. It is this wheel of torture that is often seen beside St. Katherine in many of her icons. At this point, the emperor sees that his arguments, his tortures, imprisonment, and bribery are all impotent in the face of Katherine’s faith and love for her Lord. Moreover, all of his efforts have served to convert many of his most loyal servants to Christianity. And so, with his plans ultimately frustrated, the emperor finally orders Katherine to be beheaded. And what is a display of the emperors greatest power is remembered as his ultimate failure. The emperor had done everything he could to separate St. Katherine from her betrothed, but instead he brought the two together for all the world to see.We do not today face threats to life and limb for practicing our faith. Nonetheless Christian values such as charity, patience, kindness, humility, are often under assault. Acts of charity and kindness are ridiculed. Acts of patience and humility are taken as signs of weakness. In this context, the story of St. Katherine can be an inspiration to each of us. Each of us will be given opportunities to bear crosses in the name of our Lord. And every cross that is put before us is an opportunity to show our Christian distinction. When we bear our trials in patience and love rather than in anger, we stand out as different from those around us. And while we can be sure that many will react like the emperor and take the opportunity to attack us, there will also be those who are looking on that begin to wonder where our strength of conviction comes from. And we will be given the opportunity to share with them our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, so that they too might have life with Him unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Ankle socks (Ravelry) – just about to the heel turn.  Knitting in CoBaSi by Hikoo. New WIP, Wenlock (Ravelery) from Tin Can Knits.  I used a bunch of scraps in pink, white and yellow for the star pattern at the top, now I’m on to the body and I’ve using a variegated yarn, Cayenne by Feza Yarns, in cool-toned peach-pink-green variegated colorway. Spinning Continuing on the last color of my gradient spin so I can count it towards the Pigskin party.  I’m spinning 5 minutes a day, or every other day.  Slow and steady getting back to using the injured leg.   Out and About Lots of fiber events happening online this fall Pigskin Party now through the Superbowl Ravelry Group  I’m sponsoring for the 3rd year and also participating. FOs Dumpster Fire ornament 1 (Ravelry) & ornament 2 (Ravelry) both made in CoBaSi by Hikoo, a blend of cotton, silk, bamboo and nylon.  It’s arguably my favorite fingering weight yarn – makes great socks and tank tops.  Pattern by Mary Hull of Kino Knits. Thing 2 hitchiker (Ravelry) – a DK hitchhiker scarf for Thing 2, out of big box store cotton yarn from Michaels.  It’s done and blocked and I accidentally left it out after photographing it and Thing 2 told me how much he LOVED the yarn lol.  Good kid, it’s for you! Dissent Cowl 2 (Ravelry) – this is a Christmas gift for a very knitworthy friend.  I’m using some ancient stash and I’ve about halfway through the necklace portion of the cowl. WIPs New WIP, what I am calling the Acadian Shawl (Ravelry), a Christmas gift for my mom in the approximate colors of the Acadian Flag (nous sommes fiere d’etre Acadienne!)  I’m using the Goldberry crochet pattern and working it in blue, white and red with accents of yellow.  I’ve put a photo of the Acadian flag in the shownotes so you can see it. ANYthing you make for ANY charity. One entry per FO Donating blood counts too - post a photo of your bandaid or of you drinking OJ afterwards, something like that. Willowbrook Shawl (Ravelry) – by Brenda Castiel in my own handspun cotton. I spun this yarn with fiber from fiber from Hipstrings with this shawl in mind last June during Pride month. I’ve finished the pinks and am on the red in the rainbow handspun. Dissent Cowl 2 (Ravelry) – this is a Christmas gift for a very knitworthy friend.  I’m using some ancient stash and I’ve finished the first dots section and have reached the color band. August 16, 2020. In today’s gospel we see a glimpse of Jesus’ humanity. He claims that all are beloved, and yet he refuses to help the Canaanite woman and calls her a dog. Nevertheless, she persisted. And she shows us something of what it means to be a protestor, of the highest order. Readings: Isaiah 56:1, 6-8, Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32, Matthew 15:10-20, 21-28 *** Transcript *** Is anyone else feeling kind of tired this week? Like you're spinning your wheels and you're not getting anywhere? As if no matter what you say or do, it’s falling on deaf ears? I am so tired of looking at other people’s eyes over their masks, or seeing them in little squares on our Zoom screens. Weary of wondering how to spend free time, holidays, with options so limited, always calculating the risk. Parents, teachers, and students are wading through pages of plans and protocols and weighing all the choices for the upcoming school year — none of them ideal, all of them hard. And we all want more than anything to be fully in community, safely. There are many who are living in loneliness, and grief, and isolation these days. Perhaps highlighted a bit as we edge back to “normal” but we can’t quite get there. I don’t know about you, but sometimes it feels like one more Zoom meeting, and I’m going to go soak my laptop in the water pooling on the Mead Center roof! But maybe I should just sit that Zoom meeting out instead. We're all a little weary in different ways, experiencing stress and grief, and to be honest, some trauma. Our brains are understandably a bit sloggier than normal, and our capacity perhaps lower than we feel it should be. And then today, we have this gospel. The one where Jesus, Jesus, calls the Canaanite woman, who is just trying to save her daughter, a dog. Maybe we should just sit this reading out? Or maybe, if we take a moment to breathe, there is something to be learned from the story, as there always seems to be in the end. For one thing, if you are feeling worn out today, we can hear in this story that we are not alone. The Canaanite woman comes to the square, crying out for help, and nobody listens to her. And although she doesn’t say how long her daughter has been possessed, we do know that this isn’t the first time she has made her plea. The disciples say she keeps yelling, and they ask Jesus to send her away or make her stop. When Jesus says her problem is not his responsibility, she is not his responsibility — in spite of the fact that she as a Canaanite is of the house of David just like Jesus is — the woman comes right up to him and names their common ancestry saying, “Son of David, help me.” And this is when Jesus, the Son of God, equates her to a dog. Maybe he should sit this one out! Just because our brains at their best learn really well through repetition, if we take a look at how Jesus taught and the stories he told, we will see that this is not the first time Jesus has addressed the place and beloved-ness of someone seen as an outcast, someone like the Canaanite woman. Jesus likes to give us the same message again and again, to make sure we can get it, and that’s especially helpful with our brains a little bit foggy. And most of the time, the lesson is: all are beloved. This message starts for us today with our Isaiah text: “Thus says the Lord God, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered.” No limits to God’s embrace all through the Older Testament. And Jesus’ ministry carries that through. Think about the Prodigal Son. He too is unheard, outcast, and he calls himself a servant not worthy of sonship. And his older brother would certainly have agreed. But their father claims him as a child. God claims them both as beloved. The Good Samaritan was rejected by those around him simply because he's a Samaritan. But as the parable unfolds, we come to see that this person we least expect — the Samaritan, of all people — is the one Jesus chooses to lift up as good, the one we will come face-to-face with when we are laying in the ditch. And then there is the woman at the well, the woman caught in adultery, lepers, Zacchaeus and other tax collectors, and on and on. There are countless examples of God welcoming the outsider, Jesus lifting up the outcast. And still, today, Jesus takes away this woman’s humanity by the language he uses — explicitly excludes her from the message he himself has given us over and over, that all are included as God’s children. I think we all have those days, don’t we? When as hard as we try, we in our humanity fall short of our ideals. We speak about patience, and turn around and snap at those closest to us. We do our best to embody grace, and then growl through our mask at the cashier checking us out at the grocery store, or snarl over the phone at the person trying to solve our internet issues. We preach forgiveness, and then we realize, it means the neighbor whose dog won’t stop digging up our lawn, too. We claim, as Jesus did so many times, that all are welcome, all are beloved, and then we become aware that although we find it easy to welcome people with disabilities, our community, workplace, or school is not actually welcoming for LGBTQIA people. Or we hear the voices of our black siblings, and come to realize that, in so many places where we take our comfort and belonging for granted, they do not feel valued, heard, or even safe. We all have those days — and we all have those barriers within us. Matthew shows us a Jesus who is fully human, as well as divine. And in today’s gospel we see a glimpse of Jesus’ humanity. And we learn from what we see Jesus doing in this story how we are called to respond when we are caught in our blind spots, when we hit a wall. We don’t know why or how it happened. Maybe Jesus was tired, and caught off-guard by the woman’s plea and the disciples’ reaction. Maybe Jesus wanted to demonstrate in full ugliness what we shouldn’t do, almost like a living parable. However it happened, in that moment the Canaanite woman doesn’t challenge his words, but says that even dogs deserve to be fed. She reflects Jesus’ words back to him, highlighting just how awful his comment was. Called out, Jesus doesn’t make excuses, or explain why he was right or what he really meant. He hears her, perhaps for the first time. And then, Jesus heals her daughter. In the end, this story is about Jesus. But it is also very much about the Canaanite woman. The one with the ill daughter. The one seen as an outsider. The one called a pest, and then a dog. The one who had cried out, over and over. The one who had been unheard, and explicitly excluded. And yet, she didn’t give up. They tried to push her away and silence her. Nevertheless, she persisted. The Canaanite woman, family of faith, is in truth a protestor, of the highest order. One of the more famous writings of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is his letter from the Birmingham Jail, which he wrote while imprisoned for his own persistence as a protestor. In it he says, “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” The Canaanite woman seems to have known this. She knew Jesus could heal her daughter, knew she was worthy of healing. And like Dr. King, Annie Lee Cooper, John Lewis, Rosa Parks, and other leaders of the Civil Rights movement, she didn’t allow attempts to silence her to stop her as she sought what she so desperately needed. In all of our history, people claiming their right to justice and dignity and their place among God’s children have done as the Canaanite woman did. Slavery ended, women achieved the right to vote, LGBTQIA people claimed their right to exist, and so many other injustices have been righted because of people whose voices have rung out persistently over the years, including today, as black people demand that the long history of systemic racism and brutality against them end. Even in our church, people who have been shuffled to the side or out the door have claimed their place in the pews and the pulpits, living out the courage and desperation of the Canaanite woman in their own times and places. Because of their persistence, this year we celebrate the anniversaries — 50 years since women could be ordained, 40 years since the first black woman was ordained, and 10 years since the Churchwide Assembly voted to allow ordination for LGBTQIA clergy. All of this took not days, weeks, or months, but years of sacrifice and courage and persistence, people following the lead of the Canaanite woman insisting she be heard. So we of the soggy brains and weary souls and short tempers can take heart today. The Canaanite woman was tired too, but her persistence succeeded. And even Jesus hit those walls and barriers and tripped up sometimes, as he embodied the vision that God’s love and mercy are for everyone. But that vision rekindled.
