I think you'll find we make it worth your while.     I feel like Ray Bradbury almost needs no introduction. As a kid in the 80s, I was astounded at the Disney film, Something Wicked This Way Comes. It ticked all the boxes to my young mind. When I was in high school, I discovered the richness of his storytelling in Dandelion Wine. When I discovered audiobooks, I heard him read to me The Martian Chronicles. He was a great friend of Ray Harryhausen, the great pioneer of stop motion fantasy and adventure films in the 70s and 80s. My father-in-law painted something for Mr. Bradbury, who wrote him back, saying that he had placed his art above his typewriter. Ray Bradbury died in 2012.   Today's story was originally written in 1948, in the winter edition of Planet Stories. After extensive research it appears the copyright was not renewed.   And now, “Asleep in Armageddon”, by Ray Bradbury.     Follow this link to order The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, by B. This is an episode of my newest Podcast, LRC. In this podcast, we read short fiction. If you enjoy it, please subscribe on Apple or Spotify!Ray Bradbury (1920-2012) was an iconic American author, celebrated for his profound contributions to science fiction and fantasy literature. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, Bradbury developed a passion for writing at an early age, fueled by a love of adventure and imagination. His most famous work, "Fahrenheit 451" (1953), a dystopian novel about a future society where books are banned and burned, remains a cornerstone of American literature and a powerful commentary on censorship and conformity. Bradbury's prolific career spanned over seven decades, producing an extensive body of work that includes novels, short stories, plays, and screenplays. Collections like "The Martian Chronicles" (1950) and "The Illustrated Man" (1951) showcase his lyrical prose and ability to blend the fantastical with the human experience. In addition to his literary achievements, Bradbury's influence extended into popular culture through adaptations of his work in film, television, and theater. His legacy endures as a visionary storyteller who used speculative fiction to explore profound themes about society, humanity, and the future.

It’s time for the 99th Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, the podcast about making stuff (mostly writing), finding success as we each define it for ourselves, and staying healthy and sane in the process. Settle in for an in-depth and evergreen conversation with historical and literary fiction author Maureen Morrissey! Maureen Morrissey is a writer for online publications and a published novelist; retired educator; and wife/mother/grandmother/dog mommy. She is an amateur photographer; traveler who loves to wander and wonder; and most recently, half-marathon runner. In her spare time, she attends live theater events and rock concerts, and investigates the integrity of roof top bars in her hometown NYC. Maureen has been a writer for as long as she remembers. She began writing her first novel, Woven: Six Stories, One Epic Journey in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, the day after retiring from teaching fourth grade. It was published in November of 2020. She published a second novel, Sonder: Janie's Story in March 2022, and her third, Seeing is Believing in June 2023. She published a short story, “Win, Lose or Draw,” at the beginning of January 2024, and her most recent release is the children’s picture book Country Dog, City Dog. Find Maureen Morrissey at maureenmorrissey.com. The interview portion of this episode was recorded on January 18, 2024. The other bits were recorded on April 10, 2024. This episode took about eight hours fifteen minutes to record, produce, and delivery to you. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode My day job? I’m a creative services provider helping authors, podcasters and other creators. How can I help you? The book that drove Maureen to pursue independent publishing was Walter the Farting Dog by the multi-genre, multiple-award-winning author William Kotzwinkle. You know you want to click those links… I mentioned Norman MacLean, author of A River Runs Through It, as an author who wrote a masterwork late in life. Novels told through a linked collection of short stories or novellas are sometimes called composite novels. Examples include The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, and The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. There are many, many others! Maureen tags the Goosebumps books as an example of a “beach book” for kids. More on Louise Rosenblatt’s transactional theory of reading, which I contrast / supplement with my own position that the reader / author relationship is collaborative. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows by John Koenig is a collection of various concepts for which there are only words in languages other than English. The flat earther who believes every person has their own personal sun came up in the conversation as an example of a wonderful and compelling unintentional metaphor. Maureen’s “Judge Not” article. The Cult of Done Manifesto from Bre Pettis and Kio Stark. Is Science Fiction the New Realism?

Science fiction has historically been considered a niche genre, one in which far-flung scenarios play out on distant planets. Today, though, such plots are at the center of our media landscape. On this episode of Critics at Large, the staff writers Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz anatomize the appeal of recent entries, from Denis Villeneuve's “Dune” movies to Netflix's new adaptation of “The Three-Body Problem,” the best-selling novel by Liu Cixin. The hosts are joined by Josh Rothman, an editor and writer at The New Yorker, who makes the case for science fiction as an extension of the realist novel, tracing the way films like “The Matrix” and “Contagion” have shed new light on modern life. The boundaries between science fiction and reality are increasingly blurred: tech founders like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have cited classic sci-fi texts as inspiration, and terms like “red-pilling” have found their way into our political vernacular. “I find the future that we're all moving into to be quite scary and sort of unthinkable,” Rothman says. “Science fiction is the literary genre that addresses this problem. Roy Harold Scherer Jr. was born smack dab in the middle of both the Roaring 20's and the country in Illinois, Thanksgiving of 1925. Of all the gay and bisexual actors and actresses we've covered, Hudson was easily the most elusive and convincing in his career long presentation as a very straight screen idol and leading man. While known to many in Hollywood circles, his private life only came to public light over three decades into his career, when he was one of the earliest celebrities to openly discuss his being stricken with AIDS. A naval veteran and strangely enough, a lifelong Republican and de facto Goldwater Girl (!) he pursued his dream of acting despite a pronounced and career long difficulty in remembering lines, being rejected from drama school and wasting no less than 38 takes to deliver a single line in his first onscreen role – a testament to his All American good looks and winning personality, to be sure. After being signed to Universal, he was cast in several forgettable and forgotten cheesy period westerns, pirate and supposed adventure films before landing industry attention with his Oscar for the execrable James Dean/Elizabeth Taylor melodrama Giant.  But it was with his oddly fortuitous pairing with Doris Day and neurotic comic relief sideman Tony Randall in a series of fluffy and decidedly conservative romantic comedies at the end of the 1950s that he truly attained marquee leading man status. Going on to star with Italian sex symbols Gina Lollobrigida and Claudia Cardinale, as well as other attempts to replicate the Hudson/Day formula with lesser lights like Leslie Caron and Paula Prentiss, Hudson began to tire of these sort of light comedy roles, moving to television for the highly enjoyable and well remembered McMillan and Wife alongside the equally loveable Susan Saint James and gay icon (and Rosie the paper towel lady!) Nancy Walker  for a several season, nigh-decade spanning run.   His latter roles tended towards the decidedly idiosyncratic: John  Frankenheimer's existential paranoia opus Seconds, Alastair MacLean's flawed if enjoyable Cold War spy film Ice Station Zebra, Roger Vadim's sexploitation slasher/comedy Pretty Maids All In a Row, entertaining disaster epic Avalanche and the pensive meditation of a miniseries that was The Martian Chronicles. So join us as we take on the All-American leading man who hid a surprising edge behind the surface veneer, the one and only Rock Hudson, only here on Weird Scenes! The man you're listening to is one of the most celebrated authors of the 20th-century: Ray Bradbury. By the spring of 1955 he'd authored more than one-hundred short stories and one novel, Fahrenheit 451, born out of a collection of earlier works. These stories were published in magazines like Astounding Science Fiction, Street and Smith, Weird Tales, Thrilling Wonder Stories, and The Saturday Evening Post. Among sci-fi enthusiasts, Bradbury was regarded as one of America's preeminent writers. In April of 1955, NBC staff writer Ernest Kinoy was tabbed to adapt one of the sections of Bradbury's Martian Chronicles, “And the Moon Be Still as Bright'' for a new audition. The show would be called X Minus One. X Minus One was picked up. The network formed a partnership with the aforementioned sci-fi magazines to choose stories for adaptation. The magazines would plug the show, and the show would mention the magazine during the introduction. X Minus One debuted on Sunday, April 24th, 1955. Its scheduling was erratic. NBC had long been known for impatience with new programs. If a series wasn't generating big numbers and sponsors straight away, NBC often dropped or moved the show. Unfairly, the onus was on Street and Smith and their magazines to make X Minus One profitable. By September 5th, 1957 the show was airing Thursday evenings at 8:05PM. It was NBC's only dramatic offering of the evening. Fittingly the episode was called “Saucer of Loneliness.” We've spent a good deal of time in past Breaking Walls episodes discussing Hollywood radio's famed actors. There was a concurrent equally-talented group of New York actors. Like Bob Hastings. Bob Hastings spoke of Arnold Moss. There was Jan Miner, John Gibson, Joe Julian, Jackson Beck, Mandel Kramer, another oft-heavy was Larry Haines, and of course, the husband-wife team of Mary Jane Higby and Guy Sorel. These are just some of the people who appeared on countless shows originating from New York during radio's golden age. Many were able to make the transition to television, many others weren't. Once X Minus One signed off at 8:30, Nightline signed on for ninety minutes. News had become more valuable than drama in prime time. X Minus One would be canceled after the January 9th, 1958 broadcast.

Dimension X was an NBC radio program broadcast mostly on an unsponsored, sustaining basis from April 8, 1950, to September 29, 1951. The first 13 episodes were broadcast live, and the remainder were pre recorded. Fred Wiehe and Edward King were the directors, and Norman Rose was heard as both announcer and narrator, opening the show with: "Adventures in time and space... told [or transcribed] in future tense..." For two months, beginning on July 7, 1950, the series was sponsored by Wheaties. Overview: Preceded by Mutual's 2000 Plus (1950–52), Dimension X was not the first adult science fiction series on radio, but the acquisition of previously published stories immediately gave it a strong standing with the science fiction community, as did the choice of established writers within the genre: Isaac Asimov, Robert Bloch, Ray Bradbury, Fredric Brown, Robert A. Heinlein, Murray Leinster, H. Beam Piper, Frank M. Robinson, Clifford D. Simak, William Tenn, Jack Vance, Kurt Vonnegut, Jack Williamson and Donald A. Wollheim. Ernest Kinoy and George Lefferts adapted most of the stories and also provided original scripts. In Science Fiction Television (2004), M. Keith Booker wrote: It was not until the 1950s that science fiction radio really hit its stride, even as science fiction was beginning to appear on television as well. Radio programs such as Mutual's 2000 Plus and NBC's Dimension X were anthology series that offered a variety of exciting tales of future technology, with a special focus on space exploration (including alien invasion), though both series also often reflected contemporary anxieties about the dangers of technology. The series opened with "The Outer Limit," Ernest Kinoy's adaptation of Graham Doar's short story from The Saturday Evening Post (December 24, 1949) about alien contact. A week later (April 15, 1950), the program presented Jack Williamson's most famous story, "With Folded Hands," first published in the July 1947 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. With a five-month hiatus from January 1951 to June 1951, the series spanned 17 months. All 50 episodes of the series survived and can be heard today. Later, NBC's X Minus One (1955–58) utilized many of the same actors and scripts.

There have been a number of interesting theories advanced about life on Mars, but few have equalled Charles Fritch's intriguing picture of the world of Longtree and Channeljumper in its infinite variations, tonal and thematic. What better way to melt away the winter blues than with Ray Bradbury's ROCKET SUMMER? But this episode of the podcast isn't about the familiar opening chapter of THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. No, here I'm looking at Bradbury's FIRST use of the title "Rocket Summer". It's a rare 1947 short story, published just once in PLANET STORIES, and never again reprinted. You won't find it in any of Ray's books. It also has the odd status of being in the public domain, thanks to an oversight: it should have had its copyright renewed in 1975 (following the 28-year-renewal system in use at that time). But the renewal didn't happen. Because it's public domain, I can here present the entire story to you (if you can tolerate my storytelling voice...). For more on Bradbury, and for show notes - including a link to the original 1947 Planet Stories issue - remember to check out my website, www.bradburymedia.co.uk

An unassuming little tale, it has clear echoes of both FAHRENHEIT 451 and THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. We look at the history and development of the story, which Ray re-wrote several times. The worlds of Ray Bradbury jump from the page to the airwaves with four old time radio adaptations of his stories. First, a ventriloquist's dummy holds the key to a murder case in "Riabouchinska" (originally aired on CBS on November 13, 1947). Next, a little girl tries to save a woman in danger, but no one believes "The Screaming Woman" is real (originally aired on CBS on March 1, 1955). Finally, we'll hear a pair of Bradbury's classic sci-fi tales adapted for the airwaves. First, his novel "The Martian Chronicles" is presented on Dimension X (originally aired on NBC on August 18, 1950). And a group of astronauts wonder if "Mars is Heaven" on X Minus One (originally aired on NBC on May 8, 1955).
