Left blind in 1998, Mark became the first blind person to race to the South Pole. ESG/Sustainable Investing Considerations: Sustainable investing strategies aim to consider and in some instances integrate the analysis of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into the investment process and portfolio. Strategies across geographies and styles approach ESG analysis and incorporate the findings in a variety of ways. Incorporating ESG factors or Sustainable Investing considerations may inhibit the portfolio manager?s ability to participate in certain investment opportunities that otherwise would be consistent with its investment objective and other principal investment strategies. The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of ESG or sustainable investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio where such factors are not considered by the portfolio manager. Because sustainability criteria can exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria. Companies may not necessarily meet high performance standards on all aspects of ESG or sustainable investing issues; there is also no guarantee that any company will meet expectations in connection with corporate responsibility, sustainability, and/or impact performance. After losing his sight in 1998 he became an ultra-endurance athlete, becoming the first blind adventurer to race to the South Pole. In 2010, however, he suffered another devastating blow when a fall broke his back, leaving him paralysed. He tells us more about his latest and arguably greatest expedition: founding the Mark Pollock Trust in an effort to find a fast-track cure for paralysis.

It's a truly inspiring interview on my podcast this week as I speak to Mark Pollock about the inner strength needed to cope with life's toughest challenges. ‘He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how’ is Nietzsche's quote and Mark’s mantra for living. "If you know why you’re doing what you’re doing and it makes sense to you, then you can put up with all the tough stuff. It sits over everything to do with my life really," Mark explains. He expects problems while exploring the possibilities and it’s how he made it to the South Pole and has coped with blindness and being in a wheelchair. 20 years ago, in the space of two weeks, he went from being a person about to start a new job and life in the city in London to becoming completely blind and stuck back at home in his bedroom. "Suddenly I was a blind person and had to try and find a place and identity in the world again," he says. All of which led to running ultra marathons in some of the world's most inhospitable climates and now, after the accident leading him to being in a wheelchair, he's looking to tackle paralysis through the Mark Pollock Trust. It's an incredible story that can only but inspire and why not also take part in Mark's Run in the Dark in November?
