Coping with blindness, then paralysis, to showing us that we can achieve more than we thought possible. Blindness Mark Pollock started losing his sight from childhood, culminating in blindness just before his finals at Trinity College Dublin in 1998. Mark's blindness is tied to the date of the Good Friday Agreement being signed on 10 April 1998 in Northern Ireland. He speaks of the uncertain years of autopilot after this diagnosis, the five stages of grief and the sense of being left behind as his friends went off to start their adult lives. Mark had to navigate the loss of what he had assumed was his identity; one very much tied to being a sportsman, defined by things he did. He speaks of being a spectator on the sidelines of his life. Slowly, as he emerged from this state of shock and grief, he moved from being a spectator to competitor, designing a life with clarity, confidence and commitment. Small goals built up confidence. Always a lover of endurance sports, he went on to attempt many such feats, both ‘successfully' and other times needing to be helicoptered off mountainsides. Mark went on to become a global adventure athlete, competing in ultra-endurance races across deserts and the first blind person to race to the South Pole in 2009. Paralysis Perhaps a worse tragedy occurred in 2010, when a fall from a second story window nearly killed him, leaving Mark with a broken back, fractured skull and many internal injuries. He survived, just, but paralysed. Since then, Mark has redirected his attention to the intersection of humans and technology to cure paralysis in our lifetime. Off-air he spoke to me about a particular teenager he shared a ward with, whose life's potential was wiped away at the time he was paralysed from the neck down. Mark Pollock works to inspire us all, optimise performance and build collaborations and communication channels that can ultimately effect change. He is Chairman of Collaborative Cures. Mark now works a lot with neuroscientists, to understand how to best achieve a state of flow. He also believes in collaboration with an element of competition to get the best results. This also requires great communication, and that relies on trust. Run in the Dark Mark is the founder of the global running series Run in the Dark and here Luxembourg plays an important role! This event will be held on 13 November at 8pm in 50 cities around the world, with 25,000 people running 5km and 10km. You can choose to race, walk or be a Marshall or volunteer on the night. Happy new year to all our listeners. We hope Santa brought you lots of gifts and you are ready to embrace 2023 with vigour and hot chocolate, which is what one of our crew is doing this week. Yes, Stuart is skiing in the Maldives, or that's what he told us. Is there snow in the Maldives? Jan and Óran are not so sure. So stepping in again, at great expense we might add, is Clodagh. We start off this week with an ask: The Blind Guys would love to know what holidays you have been on that you really enjoyed, whether it be because the accessibility was great or the public transport was fantastic, or the people were very helpful, etc. Maybe you have been on a cruise with your guide dog? Drop us a line and tell us how you got on. We'd love to hear about your travel tips also, like don't forget your long cane, as Jan did! The email is blindguyschat@gmail.com. We're looking forward to hearing from you. Our guest this week is Mark Pollock. Mark is a blind paraplegic adventurer, and he was a lot of fun to interview. We hope you enjoy hearing about his exploits. In email corner, Clodagh turned the tables and wrote to one of our regulars. She heard a rumour that Scottish people can't say a particular phrase and she wanted to find out if it's true. Our Scottish correspondent tells us all, which triggers a rather confusing side chat about Smurfs. And then Clare McLoughlin of “Seen Unseen” got in touch to tell us about their new 2023 schedule, which is available at https://tinyurl.com/SeenUnseenschedule. All “Seen Unseen” events are free! You can get more info and book your place by emailing Clare at claremclaughlinemail@gmail.com So put on your wind breaker, take the curlers out of your hair and have a listen to the best podcast this side of a drunken crab on steroids. Lama Hourani (@lamahourani and @lamahouranijewelry) is a Jordanian jewelry designer who grew up in the country's capital, Amman, with artistically-minded entrepreneurial parents who founded private art gallery Foresight 32, when she was a just girl. When a silversmith jeweler came asking for work at the gallery, during the Iraq war, her mother took him in and they turned their small gallery kitchen into a workshop and that is how Lama found her passion. Lama launched her line of silver jewelry in 2000. An artist and designer, Lama talks about her creative process, her studies and friendship with previous guest of the show Paolo Ferrarini, who taught her a class which marked her, about "emotional geography". She talks candidly about her challenges gaining an international reputation as a Jordanian brand and how important it is for her that young Arab men and women are able to see successful brands, like hers from the Middle East, making it big internationally. Named a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum for her commitment in supporting women in Jordan since the early days of her company, Lama offers her views on building bridges between people and cultures and creating universal languages through her designs. The mother of gorgeous twins, Matteo and Dalila, aka Lamoncitos, offers generous insights into her journey in cultural entrepreneurship and, well, the difficulties of juggling growing an independent brand with the demands of motherhood. A beautiful conversation which hopefully will inspire another generation of talented, bright and socially impactful creatives. Enjoy! This year marks the tenth anniversary of the accident which has created one of Ireland's biggest events. In 2010, Mark Pollock fell from a second storey window, breaking his back and causing damage to his spinal cord which has left him paralyzed. Run in the Dark was established by the Mark Pollock trust to support Mark's journey to cure paralysis. Usually, it's a massive event across 50 cities with 50,000 participants and while things might be a little different this year, there'll still be plenty of ways to get involved. On May 29th 2007, I took part in the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon with blind adventurer, Mark Pollock. This race which boasts the highest start line for any race in the world took us almost 2 weeks of trekking to reach the start line. Then, on the 54th anniversary of the first succesful ascent of Mount Everest we assembled at the Khumbu Icefall above Base Camp to begin our Marathon back to the Sherpa town of Namche Bazar. This was to be an incredible challenge and in this podcast I share my own experience of how I came to take part in this amazing adventure. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reach Everest summit at 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, become the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which at 29,035 feet above sea level is the highest point on earth. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/johnoregan777/message

Expedition leader Inge Solheim joins me this week, to talk about his fear of failing people. Inge is best known for leading the Walking with The Wounded expeditions to the North and South Poles, and he also helped Mark Pollock become the first blind man to race to the South pole. As part of his job, Inge is often responsible for the safety and well-being of others so I found this fear particularly interesting and was curious to find out more. I was interested to find out how Inge prepares himself and others for physical and mental hardship and how he deals with other people’s fears when guiding them. We talk about responding vs reacting, conquering childhood fears, the importance of curiosity and of tuning into a more positive channel in our heads in times of difficulty.Although this episode was recorded before the coronavirus outbreak, the topics we cover and the advice Inge gives still seems to ring true. “Spinal Injury strikes at the very heart of what it means to be human” – Mark Pollock A talk by explorer Mark Pollock and human rights lawyer Simone George as part of the Trinity Long Room Hub 'What does it Mean to be Human in the 21st Century?' lecture series. When faced with life's toughest circumstances, how should we respond: as an optimist, a realist or something else? In an unforgettable talk, explorer Mark Pollock and human rights lawyer Simone George explore the tension between acceptance and hope in times of grief -- and share the ground-breaking work they're undertaking to cure paralysis. Simone George and Mark Pollock delivered a joint TED talk in 2018 which was recorded at the TED Conference in Vancouver and received over 1.5 million views in its first 6 months online. For the finale of the What it Means to Be Human in the 21st Century, they joined us in Trinity College Dublin to speak about on the journey from injury to inspiration in an exploration of human endeavour. Inge Solheim is a free spirit, a new-age explorer, and a wilderness guide-guru whose sense of freedom hinges upon not caring, at all, about what other people think of him. Leading trips to the most remote places in the world with diverse groups—ranging from scientists, to private clients, to film crews, to people with disabilities—Solheim trains those who are with him to overcome extreme physical and psychological barriers. Among his most memorable expeditions are a trip to the South Pole with Mark Pollock, who had lost his eyesight nine years prior, and a North Pole expedition with an organization called Walking With The Wounded, accompanied by Prince Harry and a team of English wounded soldiers. Born in Norway, he grew up in a rather dysfunctional family that left him mostly to his own devices. From a young age, he turned to nature, learning to appreciate solitude—and to be self-sufficient. At 14, Solheim started working at a pizza shop at which he would become a shareholder within a year. At 19, Solheim’s daughter, Marian, was born, and he transitioned into a nine-year “mundane” (his word) finance job, eventually becoming VP of a bank in Norway. While the career prestige was exhilarating in its own right, his passion led him to take on adventure traveling as a full-time profession. A rare combination of old soul, hopeless romantic, and youthful pioneer, Solheim chases beauty and adventure, living peripatetically: He resides part-time in Oslo and finds himself gravitating toward Malibu, California, two to three months a year. Reaching the middle of his life, Solheim remains optimistic about almost everything—even climate change—and is currently working on sustainable tourism and travel business. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Solheim and Andrew Zuckerman get philosophical about what it means to be an explorer at a time in which it’s practically never been easier to get anywhere in the world; confronting fear, anxiety, and pressure; trauma and its effect on our perceptions of time; and instant gratification and materialism.
The world went dark for Mark Pollock at the age of 22 when he lost his sight refusing to let this stop him from achieving his goals he set out to become the first blind man to complete a race to the south pole, then in 2010 a fall from a second story window which nearly killed him left him paralysed again he refused to let this stop him from living life to the full. He has dedicated his life to motivating and empowering others to achieve their goals in his work as a motivational speaker and he is also determined to find a cure to paralysis in his life time and continues to break down misconceptions surrounding people living with a disability. Mark Pollock is changing the world. Unbroken by blindness in 1998, Mark went on to compete in ultra endurance races across deserts, mountains, and the polar ice caps including being the first blind person to race to the South Pole. In 2010 he was left paralysed after falling from a second story window. At the Global Education and Skills Forum in 2019, Mark inspires delegates with his new field of exploration - the intersection where humans and technology collide. In discussion with Olivier Oullier (President of EMOTIV, the global leader in mobile neurotechnologies and personalised neuroinformatics), Mark talks to the catalysing collaborations that we can expect to see changing our world. #GESF @VarkeyFDN

It's a truly inspiring interview on my podcast this week as I speak to Mark Pollock about the inner strength needed to cope with life's toughest challenges. ‘He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how’ is Nietzsche's quote and Mark’s mantra for living. "If you know why you’re doing what you’re doing and it makes sense to you, then you can put up with all the tough stuff. It sits over everything to do with my life really," Mark explains. He expects problems while exploring the possibilities and it’s how he made it to the South Pole and has coped with blindness and being in a wheelchair. 20 years ago, in the space of two weeks, he went from being a person about to start a new job and life in the city in London to becoming completely blind and stuck back at home in his bedroom. "Suddenly I was a blind person and had to try and find a place and identity in the world again," he says. All of which led to running ultra marathons in some of the world's most inhospitable climates and now, after the accident leading him to being in a wheelchair, he's looking to tackle paralysis through the Mark Pollock Trust. It's an incredible story that can only but inspire and why not also take part in Mark's Run in the Dark in November? Michael’s band Ana Gog join him to close the show with their new song ‘Roze’s Kitchen’. ............................................. 'Turning Points' By Panti Bliss When I tell people that I was diagnosed with HIV twenty years ago in my mid twenties, a time when a HIV diagnosis was a death sentence, they usually assume it was a huge turning point in my life. They assume something that big, that dramatic, must have turned my life upside down, shaken me to the very core, and changed me in some profound way. No doubt I must have learned something about myself, about life, perhaps about the cruelty or haphazard nature of life’s twists. And they imagine that I have gained some kind of wisdom from it that I will now impart to them. Maybe something about living each day as if it’s your last, or grabbing life by the horns and taking every opportunity that comes your way. Maybe I’m going to tell them to take time to stop and smell the flowers and to not sweat the small stuff. But I have to disappoint them. I have nothing profound to impart. Oh sure it was a big deal. Twenty years later and can still describe every minute detail of my doctor’s 1996 office. His pen lying on his open notebook, the post-it notes by his hand, the colour and texture of his corduroys, the clock on the wall beside a drug company sponsored wall chart, peeling away from the clumsily applied BluTack on one corner. But a couple of hours later at home, I was hungry and had to make a sandwich with the fridge-wilted lettuce I nearly threw out the day before. And that evening I still had to wash the dirty dishes. Life’s mundanities didn’t stop just because someone told me I was going to die. The dog still needed to be walked, the bins still needed to be put out, the electricity bill still needed to be paid. I didn’t start grabbing life by the horns. I couldn’t. I’d just run out of bin bags and Tesco was closing in thirty minutes. Life’s turning points are often much more mundane or unexpected. In 1986 I went to a gay bar for the first time. I’d never really met other gay people before that. I went because I was desperate to meet other people just like me. And hopefully to finally get laid. (I did both!) But walking nervously through the door of that innocuous basement changed my life as profoundly as Harry Potter’s first letter from Hogwarts. It revealed to me a previously hidden secret world that had existed all along hidden in plain sight. A magical world of Witchcraft and Faggotry where a hundred people just like me were dancing sweatily to the Pointer Sisters, while feet away, on the pavement above our heads, the Muggles were passing by, oblivious, on their way to catch the night bus home. There, under the pavement and under the mirrorball, I discovered a tribe like me. Hidden and ignored, they were building a whole new world where we were free to make up our own rules as we went along, and where everything was up for grabs. And over a glass of Campari and orange juice I was changed profoundly. I wasn’t the only gay in the world, I could be whoever I wanted to be, and nothing would ever be the same.

On this week’s Róisín Meets podcast, adventurer and spinal cord injury campaigner Mark Pollock talks about rebuilding his identity after both blindness and paralysis. The Run in the Dark founder’s new mission is putting the topic of paralysis on the global agenda.
Unbroken by blindness at 22, Mark competed in ultra endurance races across deserts, mountains, and the polar ice caps including an epic 2 month expedition race to the South Pole.
