Breaking The Silence with Dr Gregory Williams Turning Trauma into Power with Lurata Lyon, Co-Author of a new book titled The Strength of Resilience In this episode of Breaking the Silence, Dr. Gregory Williams interviews Lurata Lyon, author of Unbroken: Surviving Human Trafficking. The conversation explores Lurata's harrowing survival of kidnapping and organ harvesting gangs, her journey of self-healing through writing and fitness, and the profound realization that resilience is not just about bouncing back, but about choosing love over bitterness. Detailed Summary The Philosophy of Brokenness and Resilience Dr. Williams opens with a medical analogy regarding broken bones, noting that during the healing process, a callous forms that temporarily makes the broken site stronger than it was before. This sets the stage for a discussion on trauma. Lurata reflects that despite the horrors she endured, she would not change her past because it forged her current identity. She emphasizes that healing requires a conscious choice to reject the path of self-destruction and instead embrace love, stating she has become "walking love" to ensure the cycle of hate stops with her. Writing as a Mechanism for Healing Lurata shares the origin story of her book, Unbroken. Inspired by the character Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, she began typing her traumatic memories on a laptop simply to mimic the character's routine of "closing the day." This exercise unexpectedly acted as therapy; by externalizing her memories onto a screen, she gained a new perspective—viewing her life as a reader rather than a victim. This process significantly reduced her nightmares and eventually formed the skeleton of her published memoir. Reality of Human Trafficking Lurata details her specific traumatic experiences, including being kidnapped by an organ harvesting gang in Kosovo and later held in solitary confinement for six months by soldiers in Serbia. She describes human trafficking as a "pandemic" and the biggest business in the world, surpassing the drug trade. The conversation touches on modern recruitment tactics, such as bribing parents in war zones (like Ukraine) or luring people with false promises of work, only to strip them of their passports and force them into begging, prostitution, or organ harvesting. Regaining Trust and Taming the "Monster" Recovery for Lurata involved relearning how to trust, starting with her uncle and eventually moving into the fitness industry. She became a successful personal trainer in London by focusing on making clients "feel good" rather than just losing weight. A significant part of her mental recovery was "taming the monster"—the internal rage and defensive aggression she developed to survive. Through mentorship and self-forgiveness, she learned to control her reactions to daily stressors, using breathwork to prevent small problems from triggering survival-mode panic. Future Endeavors Lurata is currently co-authoring a new book titled The Strength of Resilience with an athlete named Fatima, expected to launch in mid-2024. She is also expanding her work into the digital space with online courses on public speaking and mental fitness, and has established a mental health retreat in Marbella, Spain, focusing on hiking, breathwork, and healing. Trauma does not have to define one's future. As Lurata Lyon demonstrates, even the darkest experiences—such as human trafficking and captivity—can be transformed into a source of immense power and purpose. By choosing forgiveness, controlling one's internal narrative, and breaking the silence, victims can transition from surviving to thriving.
#205 - Some stories don't just move you—they recalibrate your sense of what's possible. Adriene Caldwell grew up in the crosshairs of untreated schizophrenia, constant relocation, and a home life that spun from denial to violence. After losing the grandmother who shielded her, she entered a foster system that should have offered stability and instead delivered degradation: separate dishes, floor seating, and rules designed to remind her she didn't belong. The stats she shares are brutal—one in five inmates are former foster youth, seven in ten foster girls have a child by 21, and fewer than three percent use free college benefits—but the real shock is how incentives often reward keeping kids “high need” rather than helping them heal. What changed her trajectory was a lifeline she claimed for herself: a coveted congressional exchange to Germany. There, a host family modeled warmth, boundaries, and trust. Adriene learned German the hard way—by speaking it every day—aced tough classes at a college-track school, and felt the shift that happens when someone insists you sit in the front seat for the view. Returning stateside just shy of 18, she found no plan waiting and wrote letters up the chain until one emerged. Along the way, a third-grade math teacher delivered hotel toiletries to a housing project, and a fierce English teacher stocked her classroom with computers and left one to Adriene before she died. Those acts—practical, personal, and precisely timed—became stepping stones to scholarships and a future she couldn't yet picture. We also explore why Adriene wrote Unbroken, Life Outside the Lines, and how revisiting old case files forced a reckoning with both the parts of survival that became manipulation and the parts that deserve pride. Her message to teens at the edge is simple and urgent: your life won't always look like this, and soon your choices will shape what comes next—numbing or healing, hiding or asking, repeating or rebuilding. If this conversation resonates, share it with someone who needs proof that change is possible. On In The Market with Janet Parshall this week we took a look at the powerful, transformative document, the Declaration of Independence and how it brought about the end of the old-world system and cleared the way for this nation to grow and produce flawed people who accomplished amazing feats of freedom and liberty. How do we move past our traumas to find real healing and hope? Our guest helped us understand that how we react to those pains determines how long we will deal with them. There is no escaping the impact of the supernatural world on the natural world that we live in. That’s why we give you the opportunity to ask your most pressing spiritual warfare questions to one of our favorite pastor/ teachers who brings solid biblical truth to bear on this sometimes-confusing topic. As the new year progresses, we invite you to another lesson in our radio classroom as our favorite husband and wife teachers continue educating us on how to use the truth of God’s word as a measuring stick of truth against the often confusing and misleading ideas bought and sold in the modern marketplace of ideas.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He's spent years in the trenches of K-12 schools, college campuses, and therapy rooms, navigating the complex terrain of the mind. This conversation goes beyond the therapy acronyms to the raw, unvarnished truth about trauma, recovery, and what it means to build a life you don't constantly need to escape from. We talk about the hard stuff. The broken places. The slow, often brutal work of putting yourself back together, piece by piece. A journey he chronicled in his book, "Unbroken." This is for anyone who's ever fought a silent battle, felt unseen, or is just trying to understand the messy, beautiful, and sometimes terrifying project of being a person.

After decades in conventional practice, Dr. Shanks reinvented how she practices to serve people with chronic, complex illness who were failed by the standard medical system. In this episode, they explore why so many are "walking wounded", how trauma (including trauma from the medical system itself) underlies much chronic illness, and why illness is often the body's intelligent healing response rather than a "broken" malfunction. They dive into COVID as a pandemic of human vulnerability, systemic gaslighting, polarization, and how cultural narratives and dogmatic biomedicine disconnect us from our bodies' wisdom. Highlights: "Illness is beautiful… it's a healing cycle." – "The only sustainable model of healthcare is one that works itself out of a job." "The bedrock of human illness and chronic disease is that we live according to these narratives where we don't even trust our bodies anymore." "Simple, small, and slow, that's my mantra." Phillip originally set his sights on becoming a pharmacist, but while working toward that goal, someone told him something that changed everything: "You'd be great at chiropractic." That simple statement planted a seed that ultimately redirected his entire career path. Phillip shares how he made the leap, trusted the process, and built a successful chiropractic practice rooted in helping others feel and move better. But his story doesn't stop there. Phillip opens up about his battle with stage 4 cancer, including the frightening and frustrating process of knowing something was wrong—and having to beg doctors to take him seriously. He walks us through how he finally got answers, what the diagnosis meant, and the physical and mental fight that followed as he pushed through treatment. When Phillip was eventually considered cancer-free, he didn't just return to "normal." Instead, he set a new, audacious goal: competing in a bodybuilding show. Not only did he do it—he did really well. Phillip shares what that experience meant to him, how it reshaped his mindset, and why he plans to continue competing in the future. This episode is about listening to your body, advocating for yourself, redefining limits, and choosing to keep pushing forward—no matter how heavy the setback. Phillip's story is raw, inspiring, and a perfect example of what it truly means to be Unbroken.

Anna Danylchuk has been creating a war diary since the early days of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022. Anna Danylchuk aims to tell the truth about Ukraine and Russia's war and cut through the noise and propaganda. Anna is passionate about the beauty and independence of her country, and communicates this powerfully in her videos, in a clear and honest way.----------LINKS: @AnnafromUkraine https://www.buymeacoffee.com/annafromukraineMy interview with Anna in Lviv - hosted on her excellent channel- https://youtu.be/daHcnsNQ1S0?si=yHbZ2kJZ3CTVRd8Z----------The Steel Porcupine https://www.thesteelporcupine.com/I'm proud to say that this series of ‘Ukrainian advent' interviews is supported by The Steel Porcupine – a unique and powerful film about a country that refuses to lie down, a people who turned themselves into a fortress of needles when Russian tanks rolled in. The Steel Porcupine is an unforgettable cinematic experience that exposes Russia's campaign of extermination in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian people's spirit to resist and prevail. It follows soldiers, volunteers and people who decided that survival meant resistance, not submission.Created by the makers of the acclaimed To the Zero Line, this is another film about humanity, that clearly states there is no such thing as neutrality when war crimes are being committed systematically by Russia, and on a scale in Europe only comparable to World War Two. Set to a haunting soundtrack featuring music by Philip Glass, and blending rare archival footage with original material, it is an impactful work of art and storytelling, as well as being informative.----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment. Democracy in the UK is under strain. Many voters feel deeply alienated from politics, believing that those elected to represent them often pursue narrow or personal interests rather than the public good. Political polarisation, intensified by changes in the media landscape, is undermining constructive debate. And for many citizens, it can feel as though money (rather than votes) is what really speaks loudest in politics.Against this backdrop, there is growing interest in how democratic systems might be reformed to function better and become more resilient. A wide range of proposals has emerged, tackling different aspects of democratic decline. While we can't cover them all in a single episode, today's discussion focuses on two specific reform ideas explored in recent articles published in the journal The Political Quarterly. The first examines the role of donations to political parties, asking how political finance shapes power, influence, and public trust in the democratic system. The second looks at the position of smaller parties in the House of Commons, exploring how parliamentary procedures affect their ability to contribute meaningfully to debate and scrutiny. To discuss these ideas, we're joined by the authors of both pieces:Iain McMenamin, Professor of Comparative Politics at Dublin City University, is an expert on political finance and co-author of the article on party donations.Louise Thompson, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Manchester, is a leading scholar of parliamentary politics and the author of the study on the role of small parties in the Commons.Together, we explore whether reforming party funding and giving smaller parties a stronger voice in Parliament could help rebuild trust, improve representation, and strengthen UK democracy.Mentioned in this episode:‘Unbroken, but Dangerous: The UK's Political Finance Regime and the Rationale for Reform', by Logan De la Torre, Kevin Fahey, and Iain McMenamin 'Modernising the House: Why the 2024 Parliament Highlights the Need to Formalise Party-Group Rights in the House of Commons', by Louise Thompson. UCL's Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy offers a uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all fields of politics, including international relations, political theory, human rights, public policy-making and administration. The Department is recognised for its world-class research and policy impact, ranking among the top departments in the UK on both the 2021 Research Excellence Framework and the latest Guardian rankings.

Family at the holidays is a blessing, but let's be honest, it also comes with baggage. Broken relationships, unresolved hurt, empty chairs, and painful memories can make gathering together feel more fraught than joyful. But Isaiah 66 promises that Jesus will one day return and make all things right. He will bring justice for the wounds we've carried, reconciliation for the relationships that seem too far gone, and joyful unity that lasts forever. This Christmas, as you step into family gatherings that carry both blessing and burden, discover how to hold onto the promise that God is building a family that cannot fracture, a home untouched by sin or sorrow.
In this inspiring episode of Warriors Unmasked, Chuck Thuss sits down with Adrienne Caldwell — a survivor, author, and advocate whose journey proves that even the darkest beginnings can lead to a life filled with purpose, peace, and hope. Adrienne opens up about a childhood marked by trauma and instability, but also the powerful turning point that set her on a path toward healing, rebuilding, and reclaiming her voice. Today, she uses her story to help others feel seen, supported, and empowered in their own healing. This conversation is emotional, courageous, and ultimately uplifting — a reminder that no matter what you've been through, it's never too late to rise, heal, and write a new chapter. Day 7 is the integration. The mind is no longer trained only on your meditation cushion, but anchored in a consciousness that flows into daily life. Today, you'll create a new narrative for your life as you put closure on what holds you back. This session establishes the final foundation, making your Unbroken Mind a permanent, ever-present reality. ALL ABOUT THIS WEEK'S SERIES Welcome to "The Unbroken Mind: A 7-Day Guide to Ancient Strategies for Modern Trauma" In the modern world, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, not by barbarian invasions, but by endless notifications, political noise, and the constant pressure to be "on." Resilience isn't a talent you're born with, or something you buy in a self-help book. What if the antidote to our modern anxiety was perfected two thousand years ago, written on wax tablets and sent across the Roman Empire? This series is your essential training manual for mental resilience, drawn from the deepest well of ancient wisdom: Stoicism. Over the next seven days, you're going to build a mental foundation that can withstand anything. This is your Unbroken Mind, and it's structured around one of the greatest resilience coaches in history: the Roman philosopher and statesman, Lucius Annaeus Seneca. Every single episode is a workshop to make this ancient philosophy immediately actionable today. This is day 7 of a 7-day meditation series, "The Unbroken Mind: A 7-Day Guide to Ancient Strategies for Modern Trauma," episodes 3423-3429. YOUR WEEKLY CHALLENGE: "The Acceptance Code" Your mission this week: practice Cognitive Separation, isolating facts from your emotional judgments about them. Whenever you feel stress, pause and list only the neutral facts of the situation (Katalepsis), then discard the "externals" you cannot change. The journey inward demands we address the internal resistance of the self-critic. This session is an exercise in non-identification, gently releasing the habit of self-judgment that perpetuates suffering. We practice generating metta (loving-kindness) toward the self, shifting the inner landscape from a state of conflict to one of unconditional support. Discover how self-kindness is not passive surrender, but the true root of mental stability and effortless resilience. This series is your essential training manual for mental resilience, drawn from the deepest well of ancient wisdom: Stoicism. Over the next seven days, you're going to build a mental foundation that can withstand anything. We dive into Seneca's Epistle 107, where he promises that by forcing ourselves to "reflect upon all the possible evils," we can actually "shorten all its trouble by endurance." This isn't morbid dwelling; it's mental immunization. Learn from the ultimate practitioners of this method: the Roman Legionaries, who trained for catastrophic failure so they would never panic on the battlefield. Tune in to discover how paying the psychological price in advance frees you from fear and leaves you ready—and unbroken—for anything. Day 6 is the synthesis of your entire training, moving your individual power cues into a single, automated reflex called Actio—the unified performance of command. We dive into the science of Myelination and State-Dependent Memory, explaining how layering your Posture, Breath, and Gaze physically hard-wires your brain for effortless calm and focus. Learn how to transition from chaotic input to an unshakeable state in mere seconds, becoming the veteran who maintains formation even when the enemy charges. ALL ABOUT THIS WEEK'S SERIES Welcome to The Roman Power Code: 7 Days to Inner Authority and Calm. If you've ever felt your energy drain away in a stressful situation, if your hands shake before a presentation, or if you struggle to maintain focus under pressure, this series is for you. We often try to solve problems of confidence and anxiety with our thoughts—we argue with our inner critic, we try to logically reason our way into feeling secure. But the ancient Romans understood a profound truth: Your body is the source of your authority. The Roman Empire was built on more than just discipline; it was built on an embodied presence that they called Gravitas—a personal weight, seriousness, and undeniable importance. This journey is a practical masterclass in self-command. By the end of this series, you won't just feel more confident—you will have a physical, repeatable, and accessible code to embody that confidence whenever you need it. This is day 6 of a 7-day meditation series, The Roman Power Code: 7 Days to Inner Authority and Calm," episodes 3416-3422. YOUR WEEKLY CHALLENGE: Intentional Micro-Posturing Quest: Check your posture, adjust your shoulders, back, relax your jaw, and hold the Gaze of Authority (steady, calm eye contact). This challenge forces you to consciously apply the Roman techniques in low-stakes situations, building the neural pathways for Embodied Power to become automatic. THIS WEEK'S MEDITATION JOURNEY Day 1: Dignity Visualization Day 2: Affirmation: "I command my presence and own my peace." Day 3: Praetor's Pause Day 4: Ganesha mudra for overcoming obstacles Day 5: Seventh Chakra for Interconnectedness Day 6: Mental Focus Flow meditation, combining the week's techniques Day 7: Weekly review meditation and closure SHARE YOUR MEDITATION JOURNEY WITH YOUR FELLOW MEDITATORS Let's connect and inspire each other!
