Joy, trauma, grief, healing. What if they're all connected? In this conversation, John sits down with Dr. MaryCatherine McDonald to explore what trauma actually does to the nervous system, why joy is more than a fleeting feeling, and how small moments of joy can help us stay grounded through life's hardest seasons. They discuss the science behind joy, common misconceptions about trauma, how childhood experiences shape adult relationships, and why healing may require letting go of identities built around suffering. The conversation also touches on grief, psychedelics, nervous system regulation, and finding meaning after loss. In this episode: • Why joy can help regulate and rewire the nervous system • What trauma really does to the body and brain • How childhood trauma shows up in adult relationships • The danger of identifying too strongly with your wounds • Why grief may be more transformative than we realize • The role of flow states, surfing, and presence in healing Also mentioned: • MaryCatherine's books Unbroken https://www.amazon.com/Unbroken-Trauma-Response-Never-Things-ebook/dp/B0B19CVVNM and The Joy Reset https://www.amazon.com/Joy-Reset-Trauma-Steals-Happiness/dp/0306836262 • Her upcoming K-12 resilience curriculum focused on trauma, stress, and joy • Her current work exploring grief through writing and poetry If this episode resonated with you, follow the podcast, share it with someone who may need it, and leave a review to help others find these conversations.

What does it mean to speak the same language as the Torah? In this episode of Seeking Sinai, Rabbi Natan welcomes scholar Elon Gilad for a powerful conversation about Hebrew—not merely as a language, but as a living bridge across Jewish land and history. From ancient biblical texts to modern Israeli slang, they explore the astonishing continuity of Hebrew, the myths surrounding its “invention,” and the role everyday Jews played in preserving it through exile and return. Rabbi Natan also shares his deeply personal story of discovering, while studying Torah in Israel, that he could suddenly understand biblical words without translation—and realizing he had stepped into an unbroken conversation stretching back thousands of years.

Alan Webb still has the record. Twenty-four years later, nobody's touched it. The American high school mile record (3:53.43, set at the 2001 Prefontaine Classic) has outlasted every shoe revolution, every bicarb protocol, and every perfectly concocted running shoe PR storm. In this conversation, Webb sits down with Dominic to talk about why that mark still stands, what it actually felt like to run it, and what the sport's fastest generation of teenagers is still missing.Webb is disarmingly honest about his own race. Going into Pre that day, he wasn't chasing Ryun's record—he was chasing a decimal-second PR over 3:59. He was, in his words, playing with house money. The result was a 55-flat last lap with gas still in the tank, a closing kick he nearly stumbled into because he didn't realize how far ahead of his goal he was. That psychological accident, he argues, is exactly what most high school milers can't replicate on command. The conversation moves from race mechanics to coaching philosophy to the weight room sins of his own career—including a period where Webb, by his own admission, went full Arnold Schwarzenegger while training for the mile. He's candid about what he got wrong, what Coach Raczko got right, and how much of that South Lakes framework he's carried directly into his program at Ave Maria University. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, Webb lands on the thing that seems to have kept him in the sport long after the records and the contracts and the Nike deals: running, he says, teaches virtue. That's not nothing.Tap into the Alan Webb Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! S H O W  N O T E S  -The Run Down By The Running Effect (our new newsletter!): https://tinyurl.com/mr36s9rs-Our Website: https://therunningeffect.run  -THE PODCAST ON YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClLcLIDAqmJBTHeyWJx_wFQ-My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therunningeffect/?hl=en-Take our podcast survey: https://tinyurl.com/3ua62ffzInstagram: @alanwebb1

This week, Tee sits down with Dr. Karyn Shanks, a physician, author, and functional medicine practitioner who has spent over four decades helping individuals recover from chronic, complex illness. Once trained in conventional medicine, Dr. Karyn shares that her early clinical experience revealed a gap; she could diagnose and prescribe, but many patients were still left without real solutions. This realization led her to explore a more integrative path, combining functional medicine, epigenetics, neuroplasticity, and transformational psychology to better understand the full picture of human health. Her work is grounded in a powerful belief: the body is inherently wise, and healing begins by listening to it. In addition, Tee and Dr. Karyn unpack the limitations of conventional medicine when it comes to chronic illness and why a "whole-person" approach is essential. They discuss the importance of identifying root causes rather than masking symptoms, and how factors like sleep, stress, trauma, nutrition, and environmental toxins all shape our health outcomes. Dr. Shanks introduces the concept of the "terrain of healing," explaining how everyday lifestyle choices influence our biology and genetic expression. She also shares her personal health journey with hypermobility syndrome and chronic fatigue, offering insight into how understanding the body's signals can lead to meaningful recovery and resilience. Dr. Karyn also emphasizes the importance of personal agency—encouraging listeners to take an active role in their health through tools like comprehensive blood work, toxin reduction, and mindful lifestyle shifts. From supporting detoxification and reducing environmental exposures to addressing emotional patterns and stress responses, this episode highlights practical, accessible ways to move toward vitality. Her book, Unbroken, serves as a compassionate guide for anyone seeking to better understand their body and reclaim their health. The message is clear: you are not broken—your body is communicating, and when you learn to listen, healing becomes possible.

In this powerful episode of the Dead America Podcast, host Ed Watters speaks with Adriene Caldwell, author of Unbroken: Life Outside the Lines, about her harrowing journey through childhood trauma, foster care failures, and the long road toward healing and hope. Adriene shares her lived experience surviving severe abuse, including childhood rape, sexual assault, and the dehumanizing treatment she endured in therapeutic foster care under an abusive foster parent she refers to as “TBFH.” Adriene exposes the systemic failures of CPS and foster care, including the lack of counseling, life skills training, and emotional support for children who have already endured significant trauma. She highlights the reality of underpaid, burned out caseworkers, the dangers of for profit foster care contractors, and the devastating outcomes many foster youth face: • Fewer than 3% use tuition waivers for college or vocational training • Roughly 1 in 5 prisoners spent time in foster care • 7 in 10 females in the system become mothers by age 21 Despite the darkness, Adriene's story is ultimately one of resilience and transformation. She describes how a congressional scholarship that sent her to Germany for a year—and a supportive host family—became the turning point that changed her life. Through writing, advocacy, and her book Unbroken, she now offers her story to help others feel seen, validated, and hopeful. Listeners will hear: • The truth about therapeutic foster care • How poverty, class shock, and group homes shape identity • Why reform must address funding, oversight, and accountability • How one opportunity can rewrite a life • Where to find Adriene's book and connect with her mission Keywords: Adriene Caldwell, Unbroken book, foster care failures, CPS reform, therapeutic foster care, childhood trauma, survival story, foster youth outcomes, abuse recovery, resilience, hope after trauma, Dead America Podcast, Ed Watters. https://www.

America has been experiencing an unbroken century and a half of growth. Also consistent in the U.S. are the advantages people have over those anywhere else on the planet. Dan Sullivan and Mark Young pick up where they left off in part 1, sharing and discussing the next five advantageous characteristics of Americans. Show Notes: You can't beat a clever entrepreneur because they find opportunities where other people find road blocks. The U.S. is open to trade while avoiding dependence.  Nowhere on the planet can you get a new idea from conception to marketplace faster than in the United States.  China doesn't have a capitalistic market. They have a political market. Without entrepreneurial freedom, new things don't get invented. Trump has been using tariffs as a way of negotiating companies into putting their capital in the U.S. America was founded as a country of laws, not a country of men. Americans have the capacity to absorb shocks and reinvent structure.   RESOURCES: The 27 Unbreakable Rules: Build A $100M+ Brick + Mortar CPG Brand  by Mark Young  meetmarkyoung.com

In 2006, a group of classical Chinese artists came together in New York with a mission: to revive the traditional, divinely inspired culture of China, from a time before communism, and share it with the world.A source at the Pentagon is saying elements of the 82nd Airborne Division are being deployed to the Middle East. A key element of the 82nd Airborne is the Immediate Response Force, a group of highly-trained soldiers who can parachute into enemy territory. The deployment comes after U.S. airstrikes on Iran's Kharg Island, targeting military facilities but leaving oil infrastructure untouched. President Trump also warning the U.S. could target oil facilities if Iran interferes with the Strait of Hormuz.Senate Democrats rejected a Republican plan to fund the Department of Homeland Security, extending a partial shutdown now in its sixth week. Democrats submitting a counter offer, saying any deal must include changes to ICE enforcement policies. News about the United States always seems to be bad news, and that isn't random. But there's a lot of good news in the U.S. economy too, including incredible strengths and advantages that date back through the country's history. Dan Sullivan and Mark Young lay out the first five of ten positive facts about living in the U.S. and explain why the media sticks to negativity. Part two coming soon!  SHOW NOTES: The oldest part of our brains recognizes threats to life when we hear certain kinds of bad news. The U.S. is the only country that's been growing over the last 15 decades. Over the last 150 years, wars destroyed the economies of many countries. A lot of Americans don't realize just how dynamic and diversified the U.S. economy is.  Sixty percent of the Canadian economy is dependent upon trade with the United States. Donald Trump has proven that people will pay a price to get into the American economy. The U.S. has the biggest consumer market that's ever existed. How people buy things in the U.S. is completely different from how they buy things in other countries. Donald Trump generates patriotism in other countries. The academic and bureaucratic classes in the U.S. have more in common with people in other countries. RESOURCES: Driven by Douglas Brackmann "Geometry" For Staying Cool & Calm by Dan Sullivan
