Rational in Portland
Derek Clevenger: Why we need open primaries

Rational in Portland

Derek Clevenger was the mayor of Aumsville, Oregon. He became mayor after attending a city council meeting and asking questions that council refused to answer about a water and sewer fee that were not widely disclosed to citizens. As the chief petitioner, he leading the recall of half of the City Council of Aumsville and was later elected mayor, unseating the incumbent. He joined the Oregon National Guard, went on active duty, and earned his BA and his MBA while in Afghanistan. He is a trained medic and worked for the Department of State doing defense contracting in Northern Africa. Derek ran for Oregon House District 17 as an unaffiliated candidate. Because he ran as an unaffiliated candidate, he had to collect signatures to get his name on the ballot. If he had run as a Democrat or Republican, he simply would have paid a fee. Former Oregon Secretary of State Shemia Fagan refused to certify his signatures, so Derek did not appear on the ballot. He since became interested in open primaries.www.alloregonvotes.comhttps://www.wweek.com/news/state/2023/06/06/feds-open-criminal-investigation-into-la-mota-and-shemia-fagan/https://www.wweek.com/news/2023/02/01/they-left-portland-is-losing-some-of-its-biggest-fans/https://oregoncapitalchronicle.com/briefs/six-months-in-oregon-gov-tina-kotek-remains-countrys-least-popular-governor/#:~:text=Tina%20Kotek%20remains%20the%20least,disapproved%2C%20according%20to%20the%20pollhttps://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2022/05/new-poll-finds-kate-brown-is-nations-least-popular-governor.html

Michael Sipe is the Republican nominee for a new state house seat in central Oregon (House District 53), considered one of the most competitive in the state. He is running against Democratic nominee Emerson Levy, who we interviewed previously.   Take one look at Michael's website and you'll see he's an unusual candidate: a Cold War Army Ranger, black belt martial artist, podcast host, owner of a private equity advisory firm, and organizer of one of the largest Christian men's gatherings in Oregon (with Mike Huckabee as the special guest).    In this episode, we talk about the major challenges facing Oregon (and central Oregon in particular): sky-high housing prices, water issues, and addiction. We also have a conversation about gun violence in which Michael, Alex, and Ben all disagree with each other on solutions--but also find some common ground.    You can check out Michael's website (including his own podcast) at www.avoiceforcentraloregon.com.   Also mentioned in this episode:    Article: Race to the bottom: How Central Oregon groundwater sells to the highest bidders from OPB   Ben's book recommendation: Stronghold: One Man's Quest to Save the World's Wild Salmon by Tucker Malarkey

Paige Kreisman(https://twitter.com/PaigeKreisman) is a candidate running for Oregon House District 42. She's the first trans person to run for state-wide office in Oregon, the first candidate ever endorsed by Portland DSA, an Army veteran, and tenant organizer. Check out her campaign at http://www.paige2020.com Candy & I talked to her and Bryan from her campaign and the DSA Electoral Working Group about her work, how she wound in up Oregon after escaping small-town North Carolina, enlisting in combat infantry, witnessing U.S. imperialism and (pretty much) slave labor in Qatar. We also get into why you want to run socialist candidates for office, and the utility of the Bernie 2020 campaign for movement building. The Oregon primary vote is scheduled for May 19, 2020. CW: for suicide talk, just a heads up. - The first Portland DSA Brake Light Clinic is happening on Saturday, July 6th, from 11-4pm at 5020 NE MLK.
