Tensions across the country remain high one week after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. The shooting has sparked nationwide protests, including in the Seattle area. CR18 X2M.240 — Qōm קוֹם (The Standing Pattern · Authority Acts Without Announcement) Authority does not culminate in survival. It culminates in motion that no longer needs permission. Qōm names the moment when endurance becomes action. In its biblical usage, קוֹם does not describe ascent under pressure, but standing into action. It is the verb of arising to speak, arising to judge, arising to move history forward. The strain remains, but the posture changes. What endured now advances.¹ If Yāqûm is authority that refuses collapse, Qōm is authority that no longer waits. CR18 assigns X2M.240 to the phase where coherence stops merely absorbing disturbance and begins shaping the field again. The apparatus is still unreliable. Opposition has not vanished. But the sovereign no longer defines himself in relation to resistance. He stands and acts because standing has become stable. Scripture consistently frames Qōm as the transition from hidden fidelity to visible execution. “Arise, O Lord,” is not a request for proof. It is a declaration that the time for proof has passed.² In narrative terms, this is the shift from Micaiah in prison to Elijah calling fire, from Joseph enduring confinement to Joseph administering famine, from David hunted to David governing. The authority that endured silence now speaks, and the speaking rearranges reality. Qōm does not seek consensus. It does not explain itself. It does not ask whether the field is ready. It stands and by standing, compels alignment. This is not escalation. It is inevitability. The compression here reverses direction: what was previously internalized now externalizes, what was borne now issues, what was tested now governs.³ Here coherence no longer merely survives noise. It imposes structure upon it. In CR18 terms, Qōm marks the first lawful re-extension of authority after total withdrawal. This is not apparatus restoration. Titles are still suspect. Spectacle is still forbidden. But authority is now operative rather than merely recognizable. In system terms, this is where coherence recovery becomes coherence projection. The group had apparently pushed Dhillon to let a DOJ delegation fly to Minneapolis to investigate the January 7 shooting death of far-left agitator Renee Nicole Good, who was shot after she used her two-ton Honda Pilot as a weapon against the officer. Despite pressure from the lefty lawyers – described as “career prosecutors” – to initiate a witch hunt against the officer, Dhillon put a kibosh on their plans. They were apparently informed of the decision not to move forward with an investigation of the ICE agent last Friday.  After being told “no,” a group of “top leaders” in the criminal section of the Civil Rights Division “have left their jobs to register their frustration with the department.” Shock, horror. In the past I have featured interviews with wonderful guests (including Ira Siff, Janet Williams, Nicholas Tamagna, August Ventura, David Savran, and others), but they have been few and far between. The vast majority of my episodes consist of me talking solo about whatever singer or topic I am presenting on a given day. But today, alongside the new season of Countermelody, I also initiate a new series called “Countermelody Conversations,” in which I interview friends and colleagues in (and out of) the music business, discussing music, singers, singing, and all the issues that come up in such discussions. My first guest in this series is my good friend Andrew Gray. Many years (and lifetimes) ago, Andrew was a voice student of mine. Most voice teachers, when bragging about their students, tell you what opera houses they have been singing in. But Andrew is associated with an altogether different house, the Alaska State House of Representatives, of which he is a recently re-elected member. In this episode, Andrew describes how he went from being a Broadway wannabe to a politician. As he himself states, he is content that he has now found his true calling, but it is wonderful to trek that journey with him. I interviewed Andrew last summer when he and his son visited Berlin. He brought along a fascinating setlist of some of his favorite music, which we also discuss in detail.
