Kevin Brooks never planned on becoming the mayor of Cleveland, he just kept saying yes to serving people and following the next open door. In this episode, Kevin shares how he always knew he wanted to be a public servant, why after six terms as Representative of the 24th District he decided to run for Mayor (what some considered to be a “step backwards” politically), and why not running for mayor earlier still weighs on him. We also explore Cleveland's remarkable economic growth, including being named the #1 county in Tennessee for new manufacturing jobs in 2024, and Kevin's vision for the city's exponential growth over the next few years. Play Episode Listen Later Dec 20, 2025 44:47

On our radar this week… Dozing Donald woke up from his nap long enough to shout out an 18-minute campaign speech, laden with lies and blaming everything on Joe Biden. It was the centerpiece of a truly horrific week politically for Trump and Republicans. The ACA tax credits are going, going and nearly gone … and with them, Republican prospects for the 2026 midterm elections. Adding to the political challenges to the GOP: Donald Trump's massively offensive responses to two mass shootings, and the horrific murders of Rob and Michele Reiner. The chorus of one-time MAGA acolytes breaking with Trump is growing louder … and his shouted 19-minute televised falsehood-laden campaign speech didn't help, a speech Jimmy Kimmel labeled “a liar-side chat”. Also this week: The Michigan Legislature has concluded the 2025 session and setting an unenviable record in the process: not counting the years when the Legislature only met in even-number years, it was the least productive legislative session in history. The record up until this year was 1842 when the Gov. John S. Barry signed 90 public acts. The 2025 session of the 103rd Legislature is estimated to pass around 70. The unprecedented slashing of the state's budget by House Speaker Matt Hall is drawing bipartisan backlash … and creating pain for Republicans across the state. Two top aides to former state House Speaker Lee Chatfield are sentenced for corruption, agreeing to testify against Chatfield … and also accusing Chatfield of raping one of them. Another special election, and another Democratic over-performance. Democrat Gary Clemons scored a landslide victory in a special election for the Kentucky Senate on Tuesday night, demolishing Republican Calvin Leach by a 72-25 margin. That's a full 20 points better than Kamala Harris' margin in 2024 and 18-points better than Joe BIden in 2020. We now know both more and less about pythons in Peru – thanks to a 10-minute rambling, fictitious fantasy by America's Poster Child for “weaving.” His hate-filled response to the murders of Rob and Michele Reiner drew condemnation from all sides … including some of the most influential voices in MAGA world. In Trump-the-Man-Child News: His gilded “Presidential Wall of Fame” has been transformed into a tacky Wall of Insults … guaranteeing it will be gone when he leaves office. Trump’s hand-picked Kennedy Center board has decided to rename the cultural center the Donald J. Trump-John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts (even though Trump is allegedly still alive), giving him top billing over JFK. The Kennedy Center is named by federal law, which prohibits renaming the building without congressional approval. The price for Trump's ballroom has doubled from the original estimate, with the master contractor saying it's now going to require $400-million in billionaire largesse to finish. Looks like Trump is transforming the White House into a theme park. We’re joined by Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, the senior member of the state's Democratic delegation in Congress. The Dingell legacy, dating back to her father-in-law John Dingell Senior's first term in 1933, is the nation's healthcare program. Debbie Dingell was first elected to the House in 2015. She succeeded her late husband, John Dingell Jr, who was the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history. Her husband had succeeded his father who was first elected in 1932. There's been a Dingell in the U.S. House non-stop for 92 years. A hallmark of their service has been a proposal for a national health insurance system, first introduced by John Sr. in 1933 and re-introduced since at every Congress by the father and then the son. One of the things we haven't really talked about is what the 2026 ballot might look like.  Most of it hinges on what Rep Hageman decides to do.  Secretary Gray and others have said they won't run for the same seat as our Representative.  But that's only one seat--there's plenty more to run for.

Blueprint: Evidence Over "Rearrangements and Vibes" — No “SN1 Rearrangement-like Policies”Guest: Dr. Oye Owolewa, PharmDGuest Bio United Sates Representative Oye Owolewa (D-D.C.) is a dedicated public servant and community advocate committed to uplifting the voices of underserved communities. Elected in 2020 as the U.S. Representative for the District of Columbia, Rep. Owolewa made history as the first Nigerian American elected to Congress. His leadership is rooted in a passion for equity, social justice, and empowering marginalized populations. Born to Nigerian immigrant parents, Rep. Owolewa grew up in Massachusetts before moving to Washington, D.C., where he earned his Doctorate in Pharmacy from Northeastern University. His background in healthcare has fueled his advocacy for accessible and affordable healthcare, mental health resources, and economic empowerment. Prior to his role in Congress, Rep. Owolewa actively served his community through various grassroots initiatives. He worked closely with local organizations to provide educational support, mentorship, and resources for D.C. residents. His focus on youth engagement and civic education has inspired young leaders to become active participants in their communities. In Congress, Rep. Owolewa continues to champion policies that promote racial and economic equity, expand mental health support, and address systemic injustices. He is a strong advocate for D.C. statehood, ensuring that residents of the nation's capital have full representation in Congress. His legislative priorities include economic development, healthcare awareness, and youth empowerment, aiming to create opportunities and resources for all D.C. residents. With a steadfast commitment to service, Rep. Owolewa remains dedicated to improving the lives of his constituents and building a more inclusive and just society for all. Episode Summary What happens when you apply mechanistic thinking—Woodward-level rigor and Percy Julian-level ingenuity—to public policy in Washington, D.C.? In this episode of Blueprint: Inventing the Future, we speak with Dr. Oye Owolewa, PharmD, who is running for DC City Council, exploring how clinical precision and evidence-based reasoning can translate into durable solutions for STEAM education, workforce development, digital equity, mental health, and civic empowerment. We frame D.C. governance like an organic synthesis problem: stabilize intermediates, control reaction conditions, eliminate “side reactions,” and design for yield—so opportunity is not theoretical, but repeatable. An episode from Seneca Bible Baptist Church, a conservative, independent body of King James Bible believers located in Seneca Falls, New York. We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the verbally and plenary inspired Word of God. The Scriptures are inerrant, infallible and God breathed, and therefore are the final authority for faith and life. The sixty-six books of the Old and New Testament are the complete and divine revelation of God to Man. The Scriptures shall be interpreted according to their normal grammatical historical meaning. The King James Version of the Bible shall be the official and only translation used by the church (2 Tim. 3:16-17). We believe in one Triune God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—each coeternal in being, co-identical in nature, coequal in power and glory, and having the same attributes and perfections (Deut. 6:4). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful men (Phil. 2:58). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through his death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice; and, that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead (1 Peter 1:35). We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to Heaven, and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate (Acts 1:910). We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins 1 Pet. 1:1819). A message from Seneca Bible Baptist Church: “We would love to have you visit! “If you are looking for a church in the Seneca Falls, New York area that preaches the Truth from God's Word, reach out to us at any time. We start with an analyis of the latest health care melodrama in D.C., where four House Republicans unexpectedly broke ranks, joining Democrats in forcing a vote on the renwal of ACA subsidies. Speaker Johnson will not hold the required vote until January. But even if it passes in the House, it will face an almost certain filibuster in the Senate. Meanwhile millions of Americans will lose healthcare coverage, and those who decide to pay skyrocketing premiums will be forced to cut back on other basics. We welcome State Representative Angelina Cruz to discuss the budget bait and switch on special education funding. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) announced l that the state will fail to meet the 42% special education reimbursement promised in the recent state budget., and by elected leaders of both parties when they celebrated the budget "compromise." Rep. Cruz tells us about new legislation to ensure all schools get special education funding they were promised Following Rep. Cruz, we discuss a new three bill package that transforms how Wisconsin funds K-12 schools and other public goods in Wisconsin. If enacted, Wisconsin would become the first state to fund K-12 schools primarily through a progressive income tax, leading to a 44% reduction in the median Wisconsin property tax bill. Another bill restores Wisconsin's estate tax for estates valued higher than $14M and creates a new local option income tax on people who make $1M a year or more. These tools provide new, fairer options to raise revenue at the state and local levels, and begin the long process of unwinding record levels of income and wealth inequality. We also talk about this week's highly publicized trial of Judge Hannah Dugan Trial in Milwaukee, data center opponents launch a recall effort against Port Washington Mayor, and the "Monsters of the Midway" threaten to move to Indiana, the latest move in their failing (but on-going) campaign to shake down Illinois for unneeded public subsidies at the expense of schools, health care, and other public priorities. So far Illinois elected leaders are holding firm, in stark contrast to Wisconsin's bipartisan cave in to the Brewers billionaire owner last year.

You've Never Heard Mary's Story Told Like This - "Mary: Intimate Witness to God's Love Incarnate by Dr. Louis McCall"Mary is about the mother of Jesus and the arc of her development from a peasant teenager to an icon in the church, to a bold witness of the Gospel who journeys from Jerusalem to Samaria, to the mostly Gentile church in Antioch of Syria, and finally to Ephesus, a major metropolitan city of Asia Minor. This book tells the story of Mary in the style as a memoir while still being faithful to the canon of scripture in the hopes that women who seek to have their voices heard in a male-dominated society will find inspiration and strength. Also, all readers will gain a new appreciation for the challenges and fears of Mary, her own need for a savior, and her development into an eyewitness to God's love through his Son, Jesus Christ. Mary shows how one woman can start out simply and yet become a giant of faith and a model of womanhood.Louis McCall was born in Chicago, Illinois and attended Northwestern University where he received a Ph.D. Later, he also attended the National War College of the National Defense University. Louis was an Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University prior to a 36-year career in the U.S. Department of State, first as a Foreign Service officer and then as a foreign affairs Civil Service employee where he served as Consul General in Florence, Italy, Chargé d'Affaires in Brunei, U.S. Representative to the Republic of San Marino, and Assistant Inspector General. He lived in or worked in, at least temporarily, 60 countries on six continents. Whether in academia or as a diplomat, Louis found opportunities to live his faith, including part-time ministry of the good news in word and in song, including co-laboring with missionaries, national church leaders, and the underground church. When ministering early in his diplomatic career from the pulpit of a great church in Calcutta, India, Louis said to those in attendance that he had determined not to be ashamed of the gospel of Christ. That has been a commitment he has endeavored to keep over the years. In his final two years at the Department of State he organized and led the National Day of Prayer observances in the Department. Now, in his new career as an author, he has the pleasure of greater freedom in sharing what God has placed in his heart. Louis is active simultaneously in two churches in Washington, D.C. One is a multi-site non-denominational church, where he is an elder, and the other a Catholic church where he is a regular cantor, though not a Catholic himself. He has managed this with the blessing and full knowledge of pastors and priests. This has been an outgrowth of his early association with a mixed protestant-Catholic charismatic house-based worship group, his association with the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta, his Catholic charismatic wife, and guest ministry in churches and bible schools of various denominations while living in or working in other countries.AMAZONhttps://louismccallinternational.comhttps://www.kingpagespress.comhttp://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/121825kpplm.mp3

12/17/25: Joel Heitkamp is joined on "News and Views" by former Congressman Earl Pomeroy to talk about the Affordable Care Act. Congressman Pomeroy served as North Dakota’s at-large U.S. Representative from 1993 to 2011 and North Dakota Insurance Commissioner from 1985 through 1992. On the night that the House passed the Affordable Care Act in March 2010, Congressman Pomeroy cast the 218th out of 219 votes to pass the bill. Then that November, he was one of 63 Democrats who lost their seats because of his support for the 2010 health care law, sometimes known as Obamacare. As we near the end of the year, it's looking likely that Congress will leave without extending Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies. The enhanced subsidies for ACA marketplace plans will expire, spiking premiums for millions of Americans, with many seeing the price tag of their plans double or triple. 12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.1.     What does it mean to you personally to understand that you were born into the "kingdom of sin and death" through Adam, and how does that understanding shape your view of humanity?2.     How do you reconcile the idea of being represented by someone else (Adam or Jesus) with our cultural emphasis on personal autonomy and individual responsibility?3.     Do you find the human origin account in Adam to be a powerful explanation for both humans' inherent worth and deep brokenness?4.     In what ways are Jesus and Adam similar as representatives, and in what ways different? How does that inform your understanding of Jesus' obedience and salvation?5.     How are these three powerful in your life: what's been done to you, by you and for you? How would it impact you if what's been done for you was the primary felt power over your life?6.     If you are now a "citizen of a new kingdom" through Jesus, what are some ways you might still feel like a "caveman," and how can you begin to live more fully into your new reality?

The 2024 election was very confusing for Libs. After years of pandering to minority groups and “expert” predictions that Trump's immigration policies would lose his Latino supporters, a Pew study found Latino Americans surged to MAGA with over 48% – actually rising from 36% in 2020. But for people who aren't racist panderers, the explanation is simple. Cultural traits common among many Mexican-American immigrants — Catholic faith, traditional family values, commitment to hard work and law-following — align with conservative ideas. Many Latino immigrants resent those who cross the border illegally and view legal immigration as a matter of principle – because they worked hard, followed the law, and distrust those who won't do the same. In fact, a recent study found Latino Americans are powering US economic growth, reaching an estimated $3.7 trillion of our GDP. "Leading a team is every time challenging, to be honest." "We need to make a small success every time." "There is no official language of the company. The most important is communication." "It's not if we will do or not. It is how we will do it." "Only people who are not doing nothing are not taking risk." Benjamin Costa is the Representative Director and Managing Director of La Maison du Chocolat Japan, overseeing a luxury chocolate brand founded in Paris in 1977. Trained in civil engineering, he moved early into action sports retail, becoming a pioneer in European e-commerce and customer trust-building systems during the internet's formative years. After senior roles growing multi-sport retail and online operations in France, he relocated to Japan with his Japanese wife, driven by a long-standing personal connection to the country developed through annual travels over two decades. In 2015, he became General Manager of the French Chamber of Commerce's Osaka office, then co-founded an international business development firm supporting market entry for European and Japanese companies across sectors including luxury, high-tech, culture, and food and beverage. He joined La Maison du Chocolat Japan in January 2020 to lead a strategic transformation—reconnecting with Japanese consumers, strengthening alignment with headquarters, and reshaping internal ways of working—while managing an all-Japanese team as the sole foreigner in the subsidiary. Benjamin Costa's leadership story in Japan is built on an unusual combination: an engineer's analytical structure, an entrepreneur's appetite for experimentation, and a deep respect for the social mechanics that underpin Japanese workplaces. As Managing Director of La Maison du Chocolat Japan, he is not merely "running the shop"; he is running change—balancing the expectations of a French luxury heritage brand with the uncompromising standards of Japanese customers. His approach begins with a clear premise: in luxury, "not perfect" is still not acceptable. For him, Japan is not a constraint on excellence; it is the benchmark that can lift the whole organisation. If a product, service, or process meets Japanese expectations, he argues, it will travel well globally. Costa treats trust as an operational asset, not a soft concept. Internally, he speaks about building credibility through "small success every time"—a practical rhythm that mirrors nemawashi and ringi-sho dynamics, where progress is stabilised through incremental validation and consensus. He also recognises that trust must be built in two directions: with the local team and with headquarters. In subsidiaries, he notes, distance and lack of informal contact can weaken confidence and slow decision-making. His solution is to tighten the relationship through evidence, responsiveness, and direct communication between functional experts—so Japan is not an isolated "castle," and headquarters is not an untouchable authority. He leads with a deliberately flat management style. Ideas can come from anywhere, and he is comfortable letting his original concept be reshaped into something better by the team. At the same time, he rejects the paralysis that can come from over-consensus. When deadlines are short, he reframes the discussion: the debate is not whether to do the project, but how to do it. That combination—openness paired with decisiveness—becomes his method for working with Japan's uncertainty avoidance without letting it harden into inaction. Risk, for Costa, is inseparable from growth. He encourages experiments, protects people when outcomes are imperfect, and focuses on learning to prevent repeat mistakes. Yet he is also candid: some people thrive in the former business model and struggle to keep pace with transformation. He treats that as fit, not failure. Ultimately, Costa defines leadership as elevating others—creating conditions where the team can move alongside the leader, not behind him, and where capability expands through responsibility, clarity, and shared wins. Q&A Summary What makes leadership in Japan unique? Costa emphasises that trust and credibility tend to be earned in small, visible steps. Rather than grand announcements, progress is reinforced through incremental wins that allow people to align safely—an approach closely related to nemawashi and ringi-sho style decision-making, where consensus is built before execution. He also highlights Japan's high expectations for quality and reliability, which shape how teams think about accountability and reputational risk. Why do global executives struggle? He points to a common clash: headquarters urgency versus local reality. Executives arrive as change agents under pressure to deliver quickly, but Japan's organisational habits—consensus-building, precision, and risk sensitivity—slow the apparent pace. His advice is to listen first, move thoughtfully, then return to HQ with a strong, evidence-based case for what will work and why it will take time. Is Japan truly risk-averse? Costa sees risk aversion as real, but not absolute. Japan's uncertainty avoidance often expresses itself as a desire for clarity of responsibility and avoidance of public failure. His workaround is to create psychological safety: he takes responsibility for outcomes, reframes "failure" as collective learning, and builds confidence through repeatable wins. Over time, people take more initiative because the consequences feel manageable and fair. What leadership style actually works? He blends empowerment with selective firmness. He runs flat, encourages ideas from the team, and keeps his door open for long, individual conversations until an agreement is reached. But he also breaks silos by design—treating inventory, priorities, and performance as "one Japan" rather than separate departmental territories. When speed is required, he makes the decision structure explicit: the question becomes "how," not "whether." How can technology help? Costa is cautious about AI adoption, arguing that tools can save time but still require verification of sources and critical thinking. In practice, leaders can use decision intelligence concepts to improve judgement, scenario planning, and trade-offs, and they can explore digital twins to test operational changes virtually before rolling them out—while still maintaining human accountability for decisions and customer experience. Does language proficiency matter? He values Japanese ability, but he prioritises communication over perfection. He notes there is "no official language" if the team leaves the room aligned. His experience is that effort matters: speaking Japanese—even imperfectly—invites support, and colleagues often help translate intent into precise business language. What's the ultimate leadership lesson? Costa defines leadership as raising others. The leader is not the genius; the leader creates the conditions for strong people to contribute, grow, and own outcomes. The best outcome is a team capable of moving the business forward with confidence—because trust, responsibility, and momentum have been built together. In this week's episode of The Light in Everything, Patrick and Jonah continue exploring Rudolf Steiner's lecture The Work of the Angels in Man's Astral Body by turning to a central spiritual question: What happens when the guidance meant for human beings is met by resistance—both within us and around us?They revisit the three core impulses the angels weave into humanity: • a deepening sense of human solidarity, • meeting each person as a revelation of the divine, • and a redeemed form of thinking that can receive the life of the Spirit. Then they follow Steiner's claim that if these impulses are not consciously received, they do not simply disappear—they transform. Patrick and Jonah describe how Luciferic forces can turn spirituality into something automatic and coercive, while Ahrimanic forces draw us toward cold materialism and a purely technological future.Along the way, they consider scriptural motifs, inner freedom, cultural examples, and Steiner's “Representative of Humanity” sculpture as an image of Christ holding the balance between these extremes--to see this examination, please find and follow our YouTube page! This episode invites us to reflect on how spiritual currents work through our culture, our choices, and our thinking—and how freedom becomes the meeting place where the human being can stand upright in the midst of them.Support the showThe Light in Every Thing is a podcast of The Seminary of The Christian Community in North America. Progressive and centrist Democratic candidates had big wins in the 2025 elections. On this week's On the Media, a data scientist fact-checks the claim that Democrats need moderate voters to win. Plus, an Arizona state senator shares how she's reaching her constituents on TikTok and on the ground.[01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone sits down with G. Elliot Morris, a journalist, statistician, and author of the data-driven news website Strength in Numbers, to hash out what the data says about whether becoming more moderate is really the key to Democratic candidates winning more elections.[20:09] Brooke chats with Matt Bennett, co-founder of Third Way, a center-left think tank, about his view that Zohran Mamdani's win in New York City poses a “serious political problem” for the Democrats.[36:06] Finally, Brooke calls up Analise Ortiz, state senator for Arizona's 24th district, to discuss how TikTok, old-fashioned door-knocking, and making tangible differences in peoples' lives is the way for the Democrats to start winning again. Further reading:Moderation is not a silver bullet, by G.
