Send us Fan MailThis episode unpacks what "probable CTE" actually means — where the term comes from, what the science can and can't currently tell us, and why a single case (former Socceroos captain Paul Wade) has reignited debate about diagnosing a disease that's only ever been confirmed after death. It walks through the genuine case for and against using this label in living patients, and why the language we use around it matters.Note: This episode is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice or a diagnostic tool. "We Should Talk About Music": Matthew Shipp and Ethan Iverson on Writing as Practice

For this episode of The Buzz, JJA Book Committee chair Bob Blumenthal speaks with the winners of the 2026 JJA Jazz Awards' two Book of the Year categories: pianist Matthew Shipp, honored for Black Mystery School Pianists and Other Writings (Autonomedia), and pianist and critic Ethan Iverson, honored as the writer behind Oceans of Time: The Musical Autobiography of Billy Hart (Cymbal Press).Shipp and Iverson are both working musicians who write, and the conversation keeps circling back to what that dual life costs and gives them. Shipp traces his path from commissioned blog pieces to a book collecting essays on David S. Ware, Paul Bley, and Wayne Shorter, plus prose poems on boxing, decadence, and the New York club scene he came up in during the 1980s. Iverson describes fifteen years on the road with Billy Hart before finally getting the older drummer on tape, reading him the manuscript twice, and watching Hart pull stories back out both times. Both men also discovered, mid-conversation, an unlikely shared history: each once worked as a dance-company music director, Shipp for a small post-Cunningham troupe in the 1980s, Iverson for the Mark Morris Dance Group decades later. The episode also catches Shipp and Iverson comparing notes on a much more recent flashpoint: the online reaction to André 3000's ambient flute album, which briefly made Shipp's own criticism go viral. But the conversation's real center is a shared argument about criticism itself. Both reject the old line that music writing is “dancing about architecture,” insisting instead that jazz criticism, done by people who actually play the music, is inseparable from the playing.(The musical excerpts heard in this episode are “Iverson's Odyssey” from the Billy Hart Quartet's 2006 album Quartet and “Nu Bop,” the title track from Matthew Shipp's 2002 album on Thirsty Ear.)Buzzworthy NotesGuest & HostMatthew Shipp — official siteEthan Iverson — official site and Do the Math archiveBob Blumenthal — JJA Book Committee chair; two-time Grammy winner for album notesDiscussedBlack Mystery School Pianists and Other Writings — Matthew Shipp (Autonomedia, 2025); introduction by Yuko OtomoOceans of Time: The Musical Autobiography of Billy Hart — Billy Hart, as told to Ethan Iverson (Cymbal Press, 2025)Billy Hart — NEA Jazz Master; Iverson has played in his working quartet since 2003David S. In this episode, Tyler Clark and Coleman Ayers sit down with Andrew Antelidze, a 25-year-old assistant coach and scout with BC Žalgiris in the EuroLeague. Originally from the Republic of Georgia, Andrew broke into professional basketball through a connection he built while working with the Georgian national team, eventually earning a role under head coach Andrea Trinchieri before expanding his responsibilities under Rokas Masoulis. At just 23, he joined the Žalgiris organization and has since been part of one of the club's most historic seasons, finishing fifth in the EuroLeague. The conversation covers a wide range of tactical ground, from video coordination and scouting philosophy to offensive frameworks, defensive analytics, and practice structure. Andrew shares how Žalgiris built their offense around first-eight-second and last-eight-second shot principles, why tagging up has been a staple of their defense for three seasons, and how they use energy charts and smart fouling metrics to drive physicality. The episode closes with an honest discussion about player development constraints in European basketball, the challenge of developing players during a nine-month season, and what it takes for a young coach to earn and keep a seat at an elite table.TimestampsAndrew joins; They discussed Glenn's preparation process for interviews, which involves creating detailed question lists and spending several hours preparing before recording. Glenn shared his experience as a KFC Radio fan who started leaving voicemails in 2021, eventually rebranding with his face visible after some initial unsuccessful attempts. The conversation included hypothetical scenarios about dream Barstool golf matches and fight scenarios between Allen Iverson and Yao Ming, with Glenn favoring Iverson in both cases. They also discussed celebrity dinner preferences, with Glenn choosing Jalen Brown and Cutsey Joey Cold Cuts as ideal interview subjects, and the podcast ended with Glenn selecting J. Monday Night Brewing co-founder and CEO Jeff Heck had an Office Space moment a couple of years ago after returning from a three-month sabbatical in the South of France.    "When I came back, I realized the company was generally doing great," he said, adding he had a moment straight from the movie's famous meeting-of-the-Bobs scene and asked himself: "What is it that you say you do here?"   "If you can leave your job for three months and things are generally fine, it's worth asking what would you do here," Heck explained. "I've just never wanted to be the old guy who comes in with a newspaper and puts his feet up on the desk because he's 80 years old and just wants to be at the office. I like working. And I like having something meaningful to do."   That moment spawned the beginning of a succession plan for the CEO role, which transferred to Monday Night co-founder Joel Iverson last month.    On the latest Brewbound Podcast, Heck and Iverson shared that their eventual succession plan was a reflection of Monday Night leaders' overarching cultural philosophy of working to make their jobs irrelevant and identifying the coworkers next in line to take the reins.    "That's true for everyone – from our general managers at each of our six locations to our production team – 'Hey, if someone gets hit by a bus tomorrow, who is it that's ready to step into your role?'" Heck said. "And the answer is not always clear, but if there's not a clear answer, your job is to start working on that.    "The reality is that we've never had a concrete, explicit plan for what transition looked like," he continued. "But the core was how do we make sure we're culturally and missionly aligned across our leadership team so that in the event that Joel, Jonathan and I all went down in a plane crash that there would still be torchbearers for what we want to be as a company and a brewery if we're long gone."   Getting there took Monday Night 12 years, Heck and Iverson shared. In the episode, they discussed how they eventually arrived at a transition plan, the importance of the culture they're built at the brewery and their vision for the future.    Before the interview, Justin, Jess and Zoe discuss the latest bev-alc news, including the re-emergence of hard sodas, the Great American Beer Festival's move outdoors and surprisingly positive scans to open the year.
