It's Never Been a Level Playing Field: Overcoming 8 Racial Myths to Even the Field by Steve Brigham https://www.amazon.com/Never-Been-Level-Playing-Field/dp/B0D785ZDC9/ In It's Never Been a Level Playing Field, the author embarks on a journey to dissect and challenge the deeply ingrained myths that continue to perpetuate racial inequality in America. Each chapter delves into a specific myth, from the fallacy of equal opportunity to the enduring inequalities in housing, education, and justice systems. In this book, you will: Uncover the pervasive influence of White-oriented systems and beliefs that have shaped American society for centuries. Understand the historical structures, both legal and cultural, that have upheld White advantage and supremacy. Dismantle the illusion of a level playing field and expose systemic biases that disadvantage African Americans in housing, education, and justice systems. Learn how these myths intersect and perpetuate racial inequity and injustice in modern America. Discover a roadmap for systemic change and transformative policies to build a more equitable future. It's Never Been a Level Playing Field is a call to action for all Americans to understand race issues in America and contribute to the fight for equality. Read this book and join the movement toward a more just and inclusive America. It's Never Been a Level Playing Field offers a profound exploration of the deeply entrenched issues of race, privilege, and systemic inequality that have shaped the fabric of our nation. With keen insight, Brigham dissects the myths that perpetuate racial disparities and presents bold ideas for dismantling these longstanding injustices. To those in pursuit of John Lewis' good trouble, this book stands as a vital roadmap for understanding the roots of racial injustice and a compelling call to action for all of us to take part in building a more just and equitable society. A beloved community." State Delegate Jazz Lewis, Maryland House of Delegates, 24th District (Prince George's County) Comprehensive and bold, It's Never Been a Level Playing Field challenges readers to rethink racial inequality in America. Critiquing the fallacy of individual meritocracy, the book exposes the dirty underbelly of White supremacy and domination at the heart of the American project and its consequences for Black Americans. From urban renewal and redlining to the dumping of toxic waste in Black communities, Brigham shows how White Americans and institutions have upheld an unjust system through their action and inaction. In tracing how violent practices have endured and shape-shifted from slavery to our pretense politics, he shows why racial disparities and disadvantage persist in everything from education, health care, and criminal justice to housing and entrepreneurship—and what we can do about it. It's Never Been a Level Playing Field is sure to spark needed debate in classrooms and boardrooms, and around kitchen tables across the country. Willow S. Lung-Amam, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Maryland, College Park About the author Steve Brigham is a leader in the public engagement field who, for the past 24 years, has known great success as a facilitator, consultant, and designer of complex public meetings and community-building processes on critical public policy issues. He has facilitated numerous national and international forums. Since 2010, his bread-and-butter consulting has focused primarily on local and metro D.C. issues, such as land use policy, affordable housing, transportation, support for BIPOC business owners in jeopardy of displacement, economic development, and public school redistricting. In the past decade, Steve's work and volunteer time have increasingly tackled racial equity and equitable development issues. Steve is the proud father of two bi-racial children and lives in Prince George's County, MD.

A look back at some of the week's top regional stories with WAMU's Kojo Nnamdi.
Tom's first guest today is Del. Elizabeth Embry. Before she was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates last November, she served as Assistant MD Attorney General. She has spent the past four years investigating allegations of child sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. A redacted version of her report was released last week. Click here to read it. Its findings are stunning. 156 priests and other Archdiocese employees are identified as abusers, including 31 who had not been previously named publicly. The report chronicles 80 years of assaults on children and young people. Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said this last Wednesday: "Today, certainly in Maryland, is a day of reckoning and a day of accounting…" “The incontrovertible history uncovered by this investigation is one of pervasive, pernicious and persistent abuse by priests and other Archdiocese personnel. It's also a history of repeated cover-up of that abuse by the Catholic Church hierarchy…” "What was consistent throughout the stories was the absolute authority and power these abusive priests and the church leadership held over survivors, their families and their communities. The report seeks to document this long and sordid history," "While it may be too late for the survivors to see criminal justice served, we hope that exposing the archdiocese's transgressions to the fullest extent possible will bring some measure of accountability and perhaps encourage others to come forward." — MD Attorney-General Anthony Brown If you are a victim of abuse, and you would like to report past abuse by members of the clergy or anyone else, you can call the Attorney General's Office at 410-576-6312 or e-mail report@oag.state.md.us. We had the pleasure of interviewing The Crystal Casino Band Zoom video! The Crystal Casino Band is a rising DC-based indie rock quartet, who have quietly amassed over 10 million streams on Spotify, and recently released their new album, Maryland House.Maryland House, The Crystal Casino Band's most complex and varietal album to date, is a winding journey with unexpected turns that showcases their love for the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) area and pays homage to their lives as young adults. The new album, produced by Kyle Downes and Jay Nemeyer (Color Palatte), showcases the artistic growth TCCB has undergone since the release of their 2021 album, Not About You, and is unlike anything the four-piece has done before. Maryland House, named for the band's favorite rest stop along I-95, is the first TCCB record featuring each member on lead vocals as well as a variety of instruments including trumpet, ukulele, mandolin, and harmonica. Kicking off with “Curfew,” Maryland House opens with the perspective of someone in the DC area detailing the events at The Capitol on January 6, 2021. From there, “Twenty-something Socialist,” a mainstay in the band's live shows, raises the energy as vocalist/guitarist Pete Stevens sings about the jaded young progressives of America trying to make it in the world while billionaires use their wealth for expensive vanity projects. The grit of “Socialist” continues on “Jamie" discussing the actions of a flaky friend who never follows through on what they say they're going to do. On latest single “City That Sleeps,” guitarist Jarrod Hendricks sings about the transient nature of the people who call Washington, DC their home and its effect on their relationships with those they are close with romantically. Elsewhere on Maryland House, bassist Jordan Mullaney decries the injustices of the two Johnson administrations (both Andrew and Lyndon) and inwardly questions how much has changed with our nation's discontents on “Half Staff,” while drummer Joey Mamlin channels his inner Ringo Starr for the album's final track, “Getting Closer,” and reminds the listener to never be too hard on themselves and not forget their inner child.Formed in 2015 as a group of friends at the George Washington University, The Crystal Casino Band, originally named The Colonies, began their sonic journey heavily influenced by the likes of The Strokes and The Black Keys. Over the course of their college years and a few lineup changes, the band's sound transformed to combine their initial influences with the vibes of early 2010s-era indie that littered Tumblr dashboards and increasingly introspective and socially-conscious lyrics. With this turn to introspection and social awareness, the independent quartet – Pete Stevens (guitar, vocals), Joey Mamlin (drums), Jarrod Hendricks (guitar), Jordan Mullaney (bass) – grew uncomfortable with their original name's imperialist connotations and changed it to their current one in 2020. Since the release of their 2021 album, Not About You, TCCB continues to evolve as artistically showcased on their new album, Maryland House. We want to hear from you! On Midday today, guest host Ashley Sterner spotlights some of the legislative, health policy and spiritual developments in transgender rights here in Maryland. Democratic leaders in the General Assembly have made strengthening abortion rights in Maryland a top priority. This session, they're expected to approve a bill that would create a state constitutional right to abortion access. If the amendment passes, voters will decide its fate next fall. This comes as abortion rights are being restricted in many states, following last year's Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe V. Wade.Governor Wes Moore wants Maryland to stand against this tide and be what he calls a “safe haven for abortion rights.” Abortion rights aren't the only rights under assault in many parts of the country. Many Republican-led state legislatures are also working to strip rights from transgender people. More than 150 anti-trans bills have been proposed around the country, many focused on younger trans people… but not exclusively. There are bills restricting and criminalizing crucial medical care for youths and adults, bills preventing trans people from performing in public, and more. Some Maryland leaders are working to shore up the rights – and protect the dignity – of trans people here in our state. And this hour, we'll be taking a look at two pieces of legislation that would do just that.A We'll start with the Trans Health Equity Act, which got its first hearing before a House of Delegates committee on Tuesday. Ashley's first guests are Democratic Del. Anne Kaiser (District 14 -Montgomery Co.), who is sponsoring the bill in the Maryland House, and Dr. Helene Hedian, director of Clinical Education at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine's Center for Transgender Health, and Assistant Vice Chair for LGBTQ+ Equity and Education. Studies show that transgender people suffer significantly higher rates of violence while incarcerated than the rest of the prison population. And members of the General Assembly are looking to address that, with a bill called the Transgender Respect, Agency, and Dignity Act. It'll get its first hearing in the House Judiciary Committee next week. Earlier, Ashley spoke with the co-conveners of the Trans Rights Advocacy Coalition: Jamie Grace Alexander, a Black trans woman activist and multidisciplinary artist who also serves as policy coordinator for Free State Justice, and the community director of the Baltimore Trans Alliance; and Margo Quinlan, a trans woman activist and the director of Youth & Older Adult Policy at the Mental Health Association of Maryland. In today's final segment, Ashley speaks with Pastor Emily Scott. Pastor Emily currently serves two congregations who have formed a unique partnership: St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Dreams and Visions, in Baltimore. These two congregations, one old, one new, are sharing a building, pastoral staff, and a commitment to their neighborhood and the LGBTQ+ community. It's been 11 days since 50 train cars derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, and we still don't have any answers from the U.S. government. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke yesterday at the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., and you'd think the biggest topic of the day would be the accident, but it was not. Instead of assuaging the fears of thousands, he ranted about “white construction workers.” The Maryland House and Senate have a bill in the legislature that would require the Medical Assistance program to pay for all sex reassignment treatments for those using Medicaid. In a recent email sent to staff, Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine stated their support for a Maryland bill that would expand the types of "medically necessary gender-affirming treatments" covered by the state's Medicaid program, including puberty blockers for children. Gen Z is not only staying home longer, but it is also not getting driver's licenses. A new report from the Washington Post claims that far fewer people born between late 1996 and 2012 are getting their licenses than those born in previous generations. WaPo is citing fear, anxiety, finances, and even environmental concerns as factors contributing to the decrease in driver's license acquisition. Unvaccinated New York City teachers are outraged with their former school district. It has been reported that their fingerprints were sent to the FBI with “problem code” flags. They are fed up with the mistreatment and have filed a lawsuit against their former city employer. John Bursch, who is representing the teachers, said the teachers who refused the shot now have a “flag on their file” which will impact their ability to get another job. We now officially have two Republicans who have jumped into the ring to unseat President Biden. Nikki Haley announced she is running for president, and she is already on the attack. Tom's Newsmaker guest today is Erek L. Barron. He is the US Attorney for the District of Maryland, which makes him the chief federal law enforcement officer in our state. He supervises a staff of nearly 100 attorneys who investigate and prosecute national security threats, terrorism, narcotics trafficking, organized crime, gang violence, public corruption, cybercrime, financial and healthcare fraud and civil rights violations. Prior to his appointment as US Attorney by President Biden last year, Barron served in the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 24 for six years, and before that, he was a prosecutor in Prince George's County and in Baltimore City, with a focus on violent crime. Mr. Barron is the first African American to hold the post of Maryland US Attorney, and the first Democrat to be nominated for the position in the last 20 years. By this time next month, several important offices at the state and local level will be held by newly elected Democratic officials. Anthony Brown will become the Maryland Attorney General. Wes Moore will become Governor. And Ivan Bates will be sworn in as Baltimore City State's Attorney. Coordination with these and other officials is key to addressing the scourge of violence that has plagued cities like Baltimore for years. US Attorney Erek Barron joins Tom today in Studio A.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joining Tom now is Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh. After serving in the Maryland House of Delegates for eight years and the Maryland Senate for 20 years, he was elected to be the state's chief legal officer in 2014, the same year that Gov. Larry Hogan was elected governor. Frosh, a Democrat, has not always seen eye-to-eye with the governor, and just a couple of months ago, he was involved in a public dispute with the Baltimore State's Attorney, Marilyn Mosby, a fellow Democrat.
