Another brief excerpt from the novel I'm currently working on—in fact I have now finished the first full draft! Also keep an eye out for my short story (also taken from the novel) that'll appear in the Australian literary journal 'Overland' probably in December 2021! --- I'm working on a literary fiction novel about rollerblading with the working title ‘Fruitbooters: a rollerblading novel', and am looking for help to set aside the time to get it done quickly and properly. It's one small contribution towards building the ‘cultural capital' of rollerblading. You can make a once off or regular donation at patreon.com/michaelgjames . Book Vs. Movie: The Picture of Dorian Gray The Oliver Wilde Novella Vs the 1945 Film Starring Angela Lansbury The month of October is one of our favorites because we get to indulge our love for scary ghost stories! This episode focuses on one of writer Oscar Wilde's biggest commercial and critical successes--The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde is one of those intimidating subjects to cover as he is one of the most controversial and celebrated writers & thinkers of the 19th Century. Fans worship his every bon mot and admire his bravery to live his life on his own terms. He died in 1900 at the age of 46 but his legacy looms large to this day. Originally published in Lippincott's Magazine in 1890, the story of The Picture of Dorian Gray was created out of a dinner conversation between Wilde and Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Dorian Gray is the subject of a painting by Basil Hallward who one can say has a bit of a crush on Gray. Being a libertine, Gray wants to stay beautiful forever and is granted his wish. The portrait remains in his attic and ages as he cavorts around Victorian England which scandalized the world back when it was first published. The official Wilde-approved version is at the Morgan Library in New York City. It features his thoughts on sex, sexual desire, and “art for art's sake.” The story has been adapted dozens of times over the years, but the 1945 version directed by Albert Lewin is the most critically praised. Angela Lansbury earned an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actress playing Sibyl Vane So, between the novel and the movie--which did we prefer? In this ep the Margos discuss: The incredible life of Oscar Wilde The life of homosexuals during Victorian England The main differences between the novel & film. Starring: George Sanders (Lord Henry Wotton,) Hurd Hatfield (DorianGray,) Donna Reed (Gladys Hallward,) Angela Lansbury (Sibyl Vane,) Peter Lawford (David Stone), and Lowell Gilmore as Basil Hallward. Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. Welcome to Episode 275 of Succotash — I'm glad you found us. We have been here for over 10 years now, bringing clips of soundcasts from more-or-less around the globe for your ears to sample in the hopes that you might hear something you like and would like to hear more of, well, more of other people's soundcasts, specifically. Last week in Epi274, my co-host and your every-other-show-host Marc Hershon brought you what he referred to as "a full rack of clips" and I concur. He clipped from soundcasts For What It's Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Films to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. He also featured a bonus clip of a soundcast called "What Are You Watching?, hosted by soundcaster and friend of the show Chris Mancini. The clip was from a recent episode that none other than the aforementioned Marc Hershon was a guest on. Lots of great content in that episode. This, however, is Epi275 and I've got three clips. One apiece from the soundcasts known as Dragon Talk, Cinemassacre Podcast, and Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn and Reza. I'm sure I will be including a classic advert from our longtime fake sponsor Henderson's Pants and their all-inclusive new CoverAlls to "round things out" nicely. I'm using air-quotes when I say "round things out" because I am not sure I am using it correctly in this context. Anyone? CLIPS Dragon TalkGo inside the walls of Dungeons & Dragons for exclusive interviews and previews as the D&D team sits down each week with celebrities and personalities from across gaming and pop culture to discuss one of the greatest fantasy brands of all-time. Hosts Greg Tito and Shelly Mazzanoble talk about the tabletop roleplaying game, as the latest in D&D video games, comics, novels, movies, and television. Our clip is from May of last year, with special guest, comedian and actor Jeff Cannata diving into the Random Character Generator with Kate Welch. Cinemassacre Podcast The crew of Cinemassacre (James Rolfe, Kieran Fallon, and Justin Silverman) are out of the Nerd Room and into your ear-holes. They chat about their lives and the stuff they love: movies, games, and making videos. You'll also hear about behind-the-scenes antics, anecdotes about being long-time YouTubers, and a ton of obscure pop-culture crap. It's the off-the-cuff banter from Rental Reviews mixed with an AVGN panel, every Tuesday! Our clip comes from just back around the corner - this past September - in an episode entitled, "Wy Do We Destroy Video Games?, Bigfoot, and Re-Editing Star Wars". Metaphysical Milkshake with Rainn & Reza Hosted by actor Rainn Wilson and scholar Reza Aslan, Metaphysical Milkshake is a weekly soundcast where they go deep, get weird…and search for the meaning of life along the way. Every week the co-hosts guide you through conversations about Life's Big Questions. And a clip from just last month, they pose one such query to their guest, Grammy-winning musician Jason Isbell, asking him, "Where Does Music Come From?" I believe that's a pretty decent selection of audio from other peoples' soundcasts. I do enjoy listening to other people have conversations about all sorts of things. Were it not for being involved with this particular soundcast for the number of years that I have, I don't know if I would have ever heard the variety or sheer amount of other peoples conversations. I do have soundcasts that I listen to regularly, meaning that I will hear every episode they post as soon as possible after they post and I feel very fortunate to be able to do so. I think it has made me a better listener in general somehow… perhaps it functions the same way practicing anything theoretically is supposed to…I really don't know. Anyway, next week Marc Hershon will be back with more content in Epi276 and I will should be back the week after that if that is indeed what the future has in store for me. I am still making videogaming content for my YouTube channel which you can find by searching my name "Tyson Saner" in YouTube or you can go to www.tysonsaner.com to find a direct link to my channel as well as to various other entertainment endeavors I have been a part of in my improbably fortunate existence. Thank you for listening, be decent to each other, and if anyone asks you if you have heard anything interesting recently and that thing happens to be any of the content in this episode, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Tyson Saner

Book Vs. Movie: Invasion of the Body The 1955 Novel by Jack Finney Vs the 1956 Classic Film Our “Spooky Movies in October” continues with Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a novel by Jack Finney, and the movie starring Kevin McCarthy (who also made a cameo in the 1978 remake!) The story of aliens invading earth and creating “pod people” to take over the human race was (probably) an allegory for the House Unamerican Activities that was looking for Communists in the U.S. during the 1930s-1950s. The author would go on to even greater success with his novel Time and Again in 1970 which dealt with time travel. The 1956 movie was directed by Don Siegel (Escape from Alcatraz, Dirty Harry) and produced by Walter Wanger who was starting his career over after a 1951 scandal when he shot his wife's (Joan Bennett) agent and lover. (Check out Karina Longworth's podcast Love is a Crime to learn more!) The film made a few changes to the source material and was made with mostly a group of unknown and character actors to become a huge hit. The story here takes place in fictional Santa Mira in the mid-1950s (unlike 1970s Mill Valley, CA in the novel.) Our lead, played by McCarthy, is a psychiatrist and not a physician and in the end--well, you need to listen to our show to find out! In 1994, the film was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. There have been several remakes and similar stories told over the years but the 1956 version remains a classic. So, between the novel and the movie--which did we prefer? In this ep the Margos discuss: The biography of Jack Finney The political atmosphere in the 1950s about space & science The main differences between the novel & film. Starring: Kevin McCarthy (Dr. Miles Bennell,) Dana Wynter (Becky Driscoll,) King Donovan (Jack Belicec,) Carolyn Jones (Teddy Belicec,) and Richard Deacon (Mel from The Dick Van Dyke Show!) as Dr. Bassett. Happy Spooky Month! It's our favorite time of the year and it was made even better this year with the return of the Duluth Haunted Ship! For three long years, we have been awaiting the return of the ghosts and ghouls that appear on the William A Irvin every October. The haunting was canceled in 2018 when the ship was moved to dry dock for repairs. She didn't return until mid-October 2019 which was not enough time to hold the haunting. Then, 2020... well, you know. But here, in October of 2021, the Haunted Ship is back! * In this episode, Jaye and Martha interview Dave, the man in charge. Then, they interview Joe, one of the Haunted Ship's lead actors. They learn about the inner workings of the Duluth Haunted Ship before coming aboard ourselves. While in line, Jaye and Martha befriend a group of pre-teen and teenage girls who you will get to hear a lot of during the tour of the ship. So. Many. Screams. Clips of Jaye and Martha's individual recordings of themselves going through the ship reveal the highlights and terrors found within. * The Duluth Haunted ship will terrify visitors through Halloween night. Welcome back if you're a return listener to this soundcast. If this is your first time in, welcome as well to Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, where we offer you a weekly tasting platter of comedy soundcasts from around the internet for your ears. Bite-sized little clips that will, hopefully, tempt you to seek out the shows we're featuring in their entirety. I'm your host for Episode 274, Marc Hershon, but to keep up the frenetic pace of putting out a weekly show, I split the hosting duties by switching off weeks with Mr. Tyson Saner. And if you didn't catch last week's entry, Epi273, in which Tyson featured clips from Amazing Pop Culture Podcast, Life is Short with Justin Long, and WTF with Marc Maron. Don't despair, as you can still catch the episode on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Audible, iHeart Radio, Soundcloud, and wherever fine soundcasts are streamed and/or downloaded. You can also grab it from our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where we have stockpiled our past 10+ years of comedy soundcast clippery and also interviews we have done over the past decade. Just a quick reminder that Tyson and I are currently (and always have been) clipping and presenting this array of soundcast snacks out of the goodness of our hearts. We so far have failed to lure any sponsors to this show, other than our freeloading fake advertiser Henderson's Pants, and it actually costs money to put this sucker out every week. We're not complaining – we love doing this – but what would be so super nice of you would be if you could show your appreciation for our efforts by rating and reviewing Succotash Show wherever you happen to be getting it from. A quick five stars, a couple of lines about how enchanting the show is – you're in, you're out, no one gets hurt. Thanks in advance – we really do appreciate your listenership and we hate to beg, but hey… I've got a full rack of clips to share with you this week, from comedy soundcasts For What It's Worth, Storytime with Seth Rogen, How to Survive! with Danielle & Kristine, and Movies to Be Buried With with Brett Goldstein. In addition, this episode is brought to you by Henderson's Pants new Beavertail Pants! CLIPS What Are You Watching?I'm going to kick things off with a special bonus clip! What makes it special? Well, I'm in it. That's right. It's me being featured as a guest on another soundcast. Hosted by past Succotash guest and friend of the show Chris Mancini, What Are You Watching? is Chris and a guest talking about what they're watching, mostly on TV but sometimes movies, too. So we've had Chris on, we've featured his soundcast, so all it took was a little begging and pleading to be invited to be the guest for his recent Episode 50. It was a nice change of pace to be the interviewee, and we had a great time talking about a bunch of shows. The clip is from our discussion of the Hulu/FX streaming show Y: The Last Man. Movies to be Buried With with Brett GoldsteinIf you're a fan of Ted Lasso, the big breakout hit on Apple TV last year starring Jason Sudekis – as I am, regardless of the pounding it's been taking from people this season – then you probably also love the character of Roy Kent. Portrayed by Brett Goldstein, Roy's a foul-mouthed contentious veteran footballer who becomes a foul-mouthed, slightly less contentious coach in Season 2. Brett started out as a staff writer on the show who lobbied Sudekis and the producers to let him play Roy and wouldn't you know? The guy's perfect. What I didn't know of, I'm ashamed to say, is that Brett is also a comedian and, what's more, has been hosting more than 160 of episodes of his own comedy soundcast called Movies To Be Buried With, with Brett Goldstein. He brings in a guest, explains that they've been killed in some manner, but the good news is that they go onto an afterlife where they get to explain their life through their favorite movies. Episode 121 featured guest Patton Oswalt and, as you can imagine, hilarity ensued. We have an ear peek for you… How To Survive! with Danielle & KristineNext up is a clip from the debut episode of a brand new comedy soundcast: How To Survive! with Danielle & Kristine. Every episode features hosts Danielle Koenig & Kristine Kimmel doing their best to help you figure out how to “survive the things that could kill you and the stuff that just makes you wish you were dead.” In their kickoff installment, it's how to both survive a wildfire and also, with the help of their comedic actress friend and guest, Alex Alexander, how to survive being fired. Our clip is from the first part, and jumps into what you should do if you're at home and can see a fire coming… Storytime with Seth RogenWe've clipped another soundcast that just kicked off in recent weeks: Storytime with Seth Rogen. Seth has a very funny and creative mind, and this is a pretty inventive show, with guests popping in an out as he unfolds someone's story that intersects with other people and becomes their story along the way. In his first episode, the story belongs to Quinta Brunson, a writer, producer, comedian, and actress. You may know her from her self-produced Instagram series Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date. But before she got into showbiz, she was a Jehovah's Witness, living a pretty buttoned up lifestyle. Until she was on a date in Phildelphia and happened to meet Paul Rudd, yes, that Paul Rudd, at the movie theater she was in. The impact of that encounter changed the course of her life. Our clip is from Seth's chat with Paul Rudd, who doesn't recall his encounter with Quinta, but does explain why he's so damn nice to people. For What It's WorthMurray Valeriano is a comedian and longtime soundcaster – you maybe heard his show Road Stories, where he chatted with fellow comics about mostly hell gigs – and we've met repeatedly during the five-year-run of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival. He has a new-ish soundcast up and running, which I reviewed last week for This Week in Comedy Podcasts for Vulture.com called For What It's Worth and, as Murray calls it, “the only music and comedy game show … that matters!” It's a fast-paced game show with a lot of opportunities for the comedian contestant to bust each other's (and Muraay's) chops while trying desperately to correctly answer music trivia questions. This clip is from a recent episode featuring Jimmy Pardo, Gary Brightwell, and Geoff Tate, and the opening round, called “The Rock Wall”. That's what you're going to hear, and a few other little odds and ends, on Succotash Epi274. Here's hoping you enjoy our clip harvest for this week, and that you are inspired to go listen to one or all of the shows we're featuring this week. If you're having trouble remembering the show titles or where you can find them, I invite you to slide over to our blog page for this episode at our homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where you'll find lovely little clickable titles for the show AND clickable Twitter or Instagram links for the folks involved in the soundcasts. Tyson Saner will be right in this same feed next week with Episode 275 which will likely have a new crop o' clips for you. In the meantime, try to treat everyone you meet decently, wear a mask if you're supposed to, vax if you haven't, and if anyone asks if you've heard anything good lately, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
