Visit https://teachhoops.com/ for basketball coaching resources, practice plans, and tools designed to help you manage every aspect of your program, from X's and O's to student-athlete development. In this episode, we tackle two of the most challenging responsibilities that fall on high school basketball coaches: navigating player injuries and monitoring academic eligibility. These aren't just administrative tasks—they're fundamental to your duty of care as an educator and mentor who impacts young people's futures far beyond the basketball court. We discuss practical systems for injury prevention, communication protocols with athletic trainers and parents, and the difficult decisions around playing time when athletes are recovering. You'll learn how to create a culture where players feel safe reporting injuries rather than hiding them, and how to manage the pressure from parents, players, and even administrators when star athletes are sidelined. We also explore the critical importance of tracking academic progress throughout the season, not just at eligibility check dates, and strategies for intervening early when student-athletes start struggling in the classroom. This episode provides frameworks for balancing your competitive goals with long-term student welfare. We'll cover how to build relationships with teachers and counselors, create study hall structures that actually work, and communicate effectively with families when academic or injury concerns arise. Whether you're dealing with a player hiding a nagging ankle injury before playoffs or a senior whose eligibility hangs in the balance, you'll gain concrete strategies to handle these situations with wisdom, compassion, and accountability that serves your players' best interests. student-athlete injuries, academic eligibility basketball, injury management coaching, high school athlete academics, basketball injury prevention, coaching student welfare, athletic training communication, academic progress monitoring, student-athlete development, basketball coach responsibilities, injury protocol coaching, eligibility requirements, student-athlete success, coaching education balance, injury recovery timeline, academic intervention strategies, parent communication injuries, teacher collaboration coaching, student-athlete accountability, athletic academic support, concussion protocol basketball, playing injured athletes, grade monitoring system, study hall basketball, balancing sports academics, student-athlete health, coaching duty care, Wisconsin WIAA eligibility, high school coaching challenges, academic athletic balance Keys to a good offense What Are the Non-Negotiable Keys to Building an Effective Offense? Post-Gazette Pitt insider Stephen Thompson breaks down some topics regarding the Panthers' basketball team as it heads into its ACC opener on Tuesday night. Can Jeff Capel's team get off to a good start in the ACC? Or was their precarious non-conference performance a sign of trouble to come in the league? Can Pitt keep Ernest Udeh Jr. and Malik Reneau off the glass? Stephen also checks in on the state of the ACC as a whole. Which teams have started the season well? Is Duke a national title contender? Have new coaches like Ryan Odom at Virginia and Will Wade at NC State given their teams a lift? And could this be a sign that more teams from the conference will get into the NCAA tournament? Stephen tackles those topics and more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

The Browns secured a 13-6 victory over the rival Steelers on Sunday, but did the win come at a cost? Mary Kay Cabot, Ashley Bastock, Lance Reisland and Dan Labbe break down the immediate aftermath. The win dropped the Browns' draft position from a potential top-three pick to sixth overall, sparking a conversation about the team's future at quarterback. They debate whether fans should be upset about the draft implications or celebrate a culture-building win against a division foe. This naturally leads to an in-depth evaluation of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Has he shown enough progress to be considered the long-term answer? They explore various paths forward. They also discuss the ineffectiveness of tanking in the NFL and why players and coaches are always focused on winning the game in front of them. On the defensive side of the ball, they focus on Myles Garrett's pursuit of the sack record. While Garrett didn't get a sack, they get into how Pittsburgh's entire game plan was dedicated to stopping him and how his mere presence was a game-wrecking force that ultimately contributed to the Browns' victory. Today, we’re bringing you the best from another KUOW show, Soundside. A lot has changed during Sara Nelson’s time in Seattle government. She was a centrist outlier on a progressive city council when she was first elected in 2021. But the dynamics changed: Nelson ended up running the show as council president, after a moderate slate of candidates swept the 2023 election. Now - her time in office is coming to an end. Next month, there will be a new, more progressive representative in the citywide Position 9 seat that Nelson’s held the past four years. Nonprofit leader Dionne Foster will take Nelson’s place after winning by a wide margin of votes in November. Last week, Nelson spent an hour with Soundside to reflect on her tenure and the direction Seattle politics is moving. Listen to more Soundside here. For decades, leadership meant position: titles, layers, authority flowing downward. That model survived generations of management theory—but AI is dismantling it faster than most organizations realize. As automation absorbs middle management functions and teams flatten, leadership no longer comes from the org chart. It emerges from trust, psychological safety, and the ability to guide without control.Cedric and I explore how leadership is shifting from ladder to lattice, why younger generations demand clarity without micromanagement, and how learning, unlearning, and relearning have become survival skills—not growth perks. We dig into why performance without empathy burns people out, why transparency matters more than trust alone, and how leaders who can regulate themselves create teams that move faster, experiment more, and fail forward without fear. The takeaway isn't that leadership disappears—it evolves. From command-and-control to influence-without-authority. From perfection to iteration. From managing people to creating environments where people lead themselves. No nostalgia. No AI panic. Just a grounded roadmap for leaders navigating the post-AI reality.TL;DR* Hierarchy is eroding: AI collapses management layers—leadership becomes informal and horizontal.* Position ≠ influence: Future leaders are followed by choice, not title.* Ladder → lattice: Careers move sideways before up; growth isn't linear anymore.* Empathy scales performance: Psychological safety drives speed, creativity, and retention.* Learn–unlearn–relearn: AI shortens the cycle; leaders must evolve faster than systems.* Clarity creates confidence: Context + expectations beat control every time.* Transparency > trust: Explaining the why builds deeper alignment than directives.* Failure is data: Teams grow when mistakes don't equal punishment.Memorable lines* “Leadership doesn't disappear when hierarchy fades—it becomes visible.”* “AI removes managers, not the need for leadership.”* “Clarity builds confidence; confusion builds fear.”* “Trust tells people what—transparency tells them why.”* “You can't automate empathy—but you can scale it through culture.”GuestCedric B. Before Christ saved us, we were utterly powerless against the sin that so easily entangles us. But now, we have an entirely new position. In Christ we have strength to fight sin and live for God.

Everyone else is "winding down." You're deciding whether next year is accidental… or intentional. In this timely end-of-year episode of PivotMe, April breaks down three powerful holiday pivots that separate small-business owners who strategically recharge from those who collapse into January already behind. This isn't about hustling through the holidays. It's about protecting margin, deepening connection, and quietly positioning your next big year while everyone else naps. If you want to close the year like a leader and step into the next one with clarity instead of chaos, this episode is your playbook. Part 1: The Gift of Margin Theme: Protect your time, energy, and profit before you gift them all away. December isn't the time for more strategy — it's the time for boundaries. April challenges listeners to audit their calendars, guard their best hours, and stop leaking energy through guilt-driven yeses. Key insight: A boundary isn't selfish — it's self-respect. And your brain needs protection if it's going to lead next year. Part 2: The Pivot of Gratitude and Connection Theme: Reflect on who helped you — and strengthen the relationships that carried you. Before charging into resolutions, April invites listeners to look back at the people who showed up this year — teammates, vendors, friends, and quiet supporters. Gratitude isn't soft. It's one of the strongest retention and leadership strategies you have. Part 3: The Holiday Business Pivot Theme: Prep your next year like the pros do while everyone else checks out. While most entrepreneurs mentally clock out in December, leaders quietly position their relaunch. April walks through: Reviewing the top 3 wins of the year Releasing dead offers, draining clients, and pointless expenses Resetting the story of how you want your business talked about next year Because the best Januarys are built in December. Pivot Point Takeaway Rest doesn't mean disengage. It means prepare with intention. Protect your margin. Practice gratitude. Position your relaunch. A lot has changed during Sara Nelson’s time in Seattle government. She was a centrist outlier on a progressive city council when she was first elected in 2021. But the dynamics changed: Nelson became the center of power, and ended up running the show as council president, after a moderate slate of candidates swept the 2023 election. She helped oversee pandemic-era recovery, worked with two different mayoral administrations and two very different presidential administrations during her time on the council. Now - her time in office is coming to an end. Next month, there will be a new, more progressive representative in the citywide Position 9 seat that Nelson’s held the past four years. Nonprofit leader Dionne Foster will take Nelson’s place after winning by a wide margin of votes in November. Between passing a police contract, approving phase one of the city’s Comprehensive Plan, and putting forward a bill to change how consultants work with the city – Nelson has been busy during her last month in office. And last week she spent an hour with Soundside to reflect on her tenure and the direction Seattle politics is moving.
