Our guest this week is Rory O’Neill, who is known as the drag queen Panti Bliss. Rory became a cultural lighting rod during the successful Irish marriage equality referendum in 2015 and is now famous all over the world as an Irish gay icon.He talks on the podcast about the five trips and places that influenced him the most. He shares great stories of spending teenage summers in the south of France. Coming out in London in the 80’s and living through the Aids epidemic. He talks about travelling overland on the Trans Siberian Express and then living for 4 years in Tokyo where he learned his trade as a drag queen and his many trips to Sydney for the Mardi Gras. This episode really shines a light on why travel is so important in shaping a person’s outlook on life. It is exactly one year since all hospitality businesses in Ireland had to close due to the pandemic. Rory owns the Pantibar in Dublin, so he knows first-hand the devastating effects of the lockdown restrictions. He speaks eloquently of the effects of that lockdown on people working in tourism. Fergal O’Keeffe is the host of Travel Podcast Travel Tales with Fergal which is a weekly interview series listened to in over 70 countries. He interviews a special guest about their travels, adventures and experiences living abroad. The guests all have inspirational stories that enable people to armchair travel in their imagination.I would ask you to please subscribe so a new episode will appear in your library every week. Emma Jane Purcell chats to people at the top of their game about failure - from their first memory of failure to how they cope with it now. Rory O'Neill aka Panti Bliss is Ireland's most famous drag queen and self-styled accidental activist. Panti has written and performed hit theatre shows and is the landlady of Pantibar. She was the forerunner in Ireland's yes campaign for gay marriage and took to the stage of the National Theatre with a speech that became an international sensation and has been compared to some of the great speeches in the English language. A documentary about Panti called 'The Queen of Ireland' was also released in recent years.  But Rory is not here to talk about success - he's here to talk about failure. Ignorance Was Bliss
029 -- The Cult of Oprah the Narwhal -- conversation with Sinead from Mens Rea about pedophile priests

I was so lucky, recently, to be able to go on a two-week adventure around the British Isles with my husband and two older kids.   I was extra-lucky to be able to stay a night in Dublin, during which Sinead, from the Mens Rea podcast, was gracious enough to show us a glimpse of the city, take us to dinner and a show, and spend a few hours with me... first recording this conversation, then hanging out at the PantiBar. Sinead hosts one of the first podcasts I ever listened to, and she is fully aware of just how fabulous her voice is -- almost as amazing as the rest of her.   So sit back and relax while Sinead and I (joined by Emily!) get riled up over the pedophile priest scandals on both sides of the Atlantic, ponder the existance of giraffes, narwhals and Oprah, and banter in a wildly inappropriate manner.   Which, if you're into that sort of thing... there is probably about half an hour of inappropriate *and* irrelevant banter that I cut out, for the sake of time, but that I can't bear to outright discard. It will be available on my Patreon feed within the next few days.   Enjoy!  Promos by True Crime Island and Dumb and Busted. Check out bathbybex.com, use promo code CBDkate for 15% off!

Presented by GCN’s editor in chief, Brian ‘the host with the most’ Finnegan, the inaugural episode of Q+A: The Queer and Alternative Podcast features best mates Rory O’Neill (aka Panti Bliss) and designer Niall Sweeney, chatting about their iconic contribution to Dublin’s gay scene, from halcyon days of performing outrageous acts together on the stage of their fetish club, GAG, through the creation of ’90s super-club Powderbubble and the legendary dragathon that was Alternative Miss Ireland, to the creative thinking behind the launch of Pantibar, which celebrates ten years pulling pints, and more, this month. It’s a conversation peppered with anecdotes, laughs, nostalgia and attitude, and as GCN’s first ever broadcast, a little piece of history in itself. Music: www.bensound.com
