Trent Lee — #1 ranked business broker in the U.S. seven years in a row, with 600+ closed sales totaling over $200M in deals and more than $15M in personal commission. Early hustle: Painted address numbers on neighborhood curbs and mowed lawns — learned value creation early. Current role: Licensed business broker & appraiser. Specializes in small to mid-sized businesses, valuations, and finding qualified buyers through cash, SBA loans, or seller financing. How he got here: Inspired watching his father sell his 700-employee company (private equity deal). Learned firsthand how CPAs, attorneys, and buyers operate in M&A. Started and sold businesses (financing consulting & medical alert response center). Frustrated with brokers he worked with → became one himself. How to become a business broker: Licensing depends on the state (some require real estate + broker permit, others none). Associations like IBBA help standardize training/education. Strong background in accounting, contracts, negotiations, and marketing is essential. Challenge: takes 12+ months before first commissions hit; most fail because they run out of money before their first big close. Earnings potential: Smaller deals: 8–15% commission. Larger/private equity deals: lower %. First year = expect $0 while building pipeline. Year 2+, even a few deals ($500K–$2M businesses) → six figures+. Industry is older (often second careers), but huge opportunity for those who survive the ramp-up. Why brokerage over ownership? Trent opts not to buy businesses himself. Brokerage gives income without employees, leases, or headaches. He's built wealth through business sales commissions, investing proceeds into 24 fully paid rental properties. Why so few business brokers? Most owners don't even know brokers exist (unlike real estate). Lack of awareness & high skill bar keeps supply small — which means big opportunity for specialists. For Buyers: Buying an existing business = easier path to cash flow than startups. Zero-money-down deals are rare clickbait; you'll usually need ~10% down. Can come from: personal cash/savings, self-directed retirement accounts, equity partner, or combination of buyer + seller financing. Buying with 0% down = 100% leverage → dangerous if market fluctuates. Better: leverage smartly so downturns = inconvenient, not devastating. Brokerage is a lucrative but long game; plan financially for the first year with no income. For buyers, don't chase unicorn “zero down” structures — get creative but realistic with 10% in. Buying an existing cash-flowing business is almost always better than starting from scratch. Email: trent@fcbblv.com

This week we check out for the vividly vibrant, and sometimes violent, lilac-breasted roller. It is the unofficial National Bird of Kenya, and is often referred to as the "most photographed bird in Africa" with its jaw-dropping multi-coloured plumage. Drew even embarrasses us all by doing a rap about it. In the news, we "roll" through some articles about bearded vultures; Galápagos iguanas; Aaron offends Manchester and Liverpool (again); and we discover that some fungi are able to digest plastic! All this and more. The cupboard is open, come on in!
As a child, Cyril Bordier dreamed of flying. His attentive family, noticing his aptitude for observation and construction, guided him towards architecture. His path was punctuated by travels. As an adult, Cyril reconciled the two, or rather the three: drawing, architecture and airplanes, when he joined Aéroports de Paris. In this issue of Com d'Archi, the architect talks about his career path and, in the process, passes on a culture that could be dying out, that of drawing and the importance of knowing how to "represent" in the career of any architect. When Sheila Nemtin Levine began painting, she didn't plan to fulfill the final commandment of the Torah: that every Jew should write their own Old Testament. But, since 2016, that's what ended up happening. She has painted 54 vibrant, mixed-media canvases—one for each chapter—each with a modern take on the ancient verses. They comprise her new art exhibit, Tablet Tableaux. Nemtin Levine calls it a journey of exploration, complete with inspirational messages and famous quotes. Audience members are encouraged to physically engage with the works by touching the grains of sand, family photos and architectural blueprints for the Israelites' portable desert tabernacle. Nemtin Levine's work, which has been displayed at several synagogues across Montreal, has recently been used at Jewish high schools for special b'nei mitzvah study modules. The project has also spawned a coffee table book, a free audio guide and a forthcoming documentary video series. On today's episode of North Star, Nemtin Levine shares her story with host Ellin Bessner, who visits the artist in Montreal to see the work in person. Visionary contemporary artist Kent Monkman invites us into the brilliantly transformative world of his creative endeavors, where art becomes a powerful tool for rewriting history. As Kent prepares to showcase "History is Painted by the Victors" at the Denver Art Museum, he shares how childhood visits to museums in Winnipeg ignited his mission to challenge the biased portrayals of Indigenous peoples. With a masterful blend of beauty and humor, Kent's work confronts the misrepresentations by 19th-century settler artists, urging a reevaluation of the narratives that have long marginalized Indigenous voices.Step into the intriguing realm of Miss Chief Eagle Testicle, Kent's dynamic alter ego, who boldly subverts the gaze of traditional settler artists. This character, embodying gender fluidity and empowered sexuality, serves as a beacon of reclamation and resilience, offering a Cree perspective that reclaims Indigenous stories within art history. From abstract painting to a distinct representational style, Kent's artistic evolution reflects a deep homage to Indigenous traditions while innovatively engaging with historical narratives. We also explore Kent's journey beyond visual art, transitioning into literary storytelling with the memoirs of Miss Chief. In collaboration with Giselle Gordon, Kent weaves North American history with Cree cosmology, offering fresh perspectives that continue to challenge perceptions. The conversation extends to the profound impact of his exhibition "Shame and Prejudice" across Canada, fueling awareness of residential schools and highlighting the resilience of Indigenous communities. Kent's work is not just art; it's a legacy paving the way for future generations of Indigenous artists, fostering a renewed hope for a world where authentic representation and acceptance are the norm.Find out more about his exhibit here: https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/exhibitions/kent-monkman

Here are some things we know to be true: 1.) The Detroit Institute of Arts is simply a gem of a cultural destination and community resource that enlightens, educates, enriches, and entertains the tri-county Metro area and beyond! 2.) Their incredible exhibition, Painted with Silk, just closed last week, spanning the art of early American Embroidery from the 1600s up into the 1830s, just one of many special exhibitions curated by the DIA and open to the public year-in and year-out! 3.) We have two podcast cohosts, Erin & Mary Grahame, who are enthusiastic practioners and appreciators of the Fiber Arts, so they thought a field trip TO the D.I.A. with our library mascot, Fern the Frog, could prove to build a budding partnership between the museum and our library! They were right! Tune in for our conversation! Oh, and stay tuned for updates, coming later in the Fall, when the Ferndale Library partners with the D.I.A. to coordinate guided tours, including free shuttle transportation (from the library) down to the museum! https://dia.org/ IG: @diadetroit

“Around the swimming beagles, bright stars danced on rippling waters like a thousand little fishes of light scurrying in a sea of darkness. Can there be a more beautiful sight than when sky meets ocean in the black of night?” The lawyer whispered to himself, the beagles, and the sea as the soft blanket of summer wrapped them all in her warm embrace.Night is a time of reflection. Not of stars in water only, but of times past and times to come. And such a night was this.”– Beagles of Destinae, chapter 4Ideas pour into the dark waters of the unconscious mind, sparkling like reflected stars. As above, so below. The natives always said it was so.But as Gemini sat on the throne of Aquarius, a dragonfish was born. And thus our story begins. The twins did not mean to unleash a dragonfish, but they had never promised not to, either. And besides, a dragonfish is an adventure.Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea,and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,And brought him strings, and sealing wax, and other fancy stuff.Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail,Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail.Noble kings and princes would bow whenever they came,Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name.A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys,Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys. One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more,And Puff, that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.“Puff the Magic Dragon” with lyrics by Leonard Lipton and music by Peter Yarrow appears on the 1963 Peter, Paul and Mary album, “Moving.” An urban myth soon arose that the song was about drugs. It's really a backward look at childhood, and all that was left behind.“The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched, they are felt with the heart. All grown-ups were once children… but only few of them remember it.”– Antoine de Saint-Exupéry“He saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, he said to Simon, ‘Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.'”– Luke, ch. 5The book “Peter Pan” was written only after the 1904 play became a huge success. On opening night, Mrs. Snow spoke to the playwright and author, J.M. Barrie about her late husband…“And he would so have loved this evening. The pirates, and the Indians; he was really just a boy himself, you know, to the very end. I suppose it's all the work of the ticking crocodile, isn't it? Time is chasing after all of us. Isn't that right?”“It is not true that people stop pursuing dreams because they grow old; they grow old because they stop pursuing dreams.”– Gabriel Garcia Marquez“The secret of The Muppets is they re not very good at what they do. Kermit's not a great host, Fozzie's not a good comedian, Miss Piggy's not a great singer… Like, none of them are actually good at it, but they love it. They're like a family, and they like putting on the show. And they have joy. And because of the joy, it doesn't matter that they're not good at it. That's what we should all be. Muppets.”– Brett Goldstein“All the world is made of faith, and trust, and pixie dust…If growing up means it would be beneath my dignity to climb a tree, I'll never grow up.”– Peter

Kent Monkman is one of the most vital and provocative voices in contemporary painting. Based between Toronto and New York, and a member of the Fisher River Cree Nation in Treaty 5 Territory, Monkman is known for his epic, genre-bending canvases that challenge dominant historical narratives and reframe them through Indigenous and queer perspectives. Monkman has developed a distinctive visual language that subverts classical European art traditions—particularly those of 19th-century and 20th-century history painting—to expose the distortions and omissions of colonial narratives. His work blends these European conventions with Indigenous histories, recontextualizing colonization while exploring themes of resilience, sexuality, joy, and identity. At the center of many of these works is Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, Monkman's time-traveling alter ego. Clad in high heels, Miss Chief operates as both a trickster figure and a witness to colonial encounters, embodying Indigenous worldviews and queering history in a way that destabilizes settler-colonial perspectives. Through Miss Chief, Monkman reimagines historical events, placing Indigenous presence and agency at the forefront. Monkman's large-scale commissions include mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People), a pair of monumental paintings created for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2019, which directly confronted the institution's colonial legacies. His work has been exhibited in major museums across North America and Europe, and is part of significant public and private collections. As his first major U.S. museum exhibition, "History is Painted by the Victors," opens at the Denver Art Museum, Monkman joined me to reflect on the road to this moment—a journey that spans decades of challenging entrenched narratives in Western art history. We spoke about how growing up in Winnipeg, amidst the complexities of Indigenous representation in Canadian institutions, shaped his relationship to museums; how painting serves as both a political tool and a personal method for processing historical trauma; and the collaborative energy that fuels his expansive studio practice.
I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most anticipated and exciting painters working today – Danielle McKinney. Born in Alabama, and based in New Jersey, McKinney is hailed for her small, contemplative, introspective and intimate paintings of women. Caught in moments of rest, relaxation and repose, McKinney's works, to my mind, are a collective portrait of the joys of female solitude. Painted on a black-coloured canvas emphasising the twilight time in which they appear to be set, McKinney's seductive and alluring paintings situate the figure swept up in their own world. Although she uses only a few thick, washy strokes of paint, each has significance, whether it be to evoke a dress, a hint of a cigarette flame, or a glow of light under a low-lit lamp in their soft-focus interiors. Never fussy or over-painted, they show just how much something so simple like a woman in her private space can be so powerful. While we aren't told much about them, it's up to us as the viewers to imagine their lives. I like to read stories into them, trying to understand where they are, and on what day and which time, they can also be read as interior moods. Full of atmosphere, it's almost like you can hear a soundtrack of Sade blasting softly in the background – one of McKinney's great inspirations. But painting wasn't always something she had pursued. While she had a great love of the medium in childhood, McKinney's training is in photography, having graduated from Parsons School of Design in 2013. Fascinated by humanity and movement, and the framing of an image, McKinney had a career as a photographer before turning to painting during the Covid-19 pandemic. Shut inside her New Jersey home, she hid herself away, bought some cheap canvases and turned her focus to painting – and hasn't stopped, and come five years later today, she has exhibited across the world. Recent bodies of work include an Edward Hopper-inspired series – which gets me to think about the connection between the solitude of 1930s America with today. But unlike Hopper, McKinney paints exclusively women, always inside, and resting in still, private moments – as she has said: “That's what I really try to capture in this beautiful solitude … Some of the ladies are very tense in those moments with a cigarette, and then sometimes they're asleep and beautiful. But those moments are theirs. --- THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Nada Smiljanic Music by Ben Wetherfield
