Ruth O'Neill is originally from just outside Waterford City but in her teens, moved with her family to South Kilkenny. After finishing secondary school she worked in Germany as an au pair and learned to speak the language fluently while on her return to Ireland, she studied marketing and languages in Dublin. It wasn't long however before Ruth was back travelling again, spending several years working overseas including in the Middle East during the second Gulf War. When she finally returned to Ireland to settle, Ruth established her business, Charm Bee, in Labasheeda on the Shannon Estuary. Before that, it was mostly in the aviation sector she worked.

This episode of the podcast follows on from a visit by the author Jan Carson to Waterford as part of the Creative Ireland Shared Island initiative. This project is a collaboration between Mid and East Antrim Borough Councils and Waterford City and County Council who are aiming to develop and enhance a shared sense of community through various means, one of which is creativity and literature. Jan gave a talk at SETU, entitled, “Untangling the Knots of Northern Identity” which explored her identity as a Northern Protestant who identifies as an Irish writer. Jan's novel The Raptures was published in 2022 and was shortlisted for the An Post Irish Novel of the Year award and the Kerry Group Novel of the Year. Her novel The Fire Starters won the 2019 EU Prize for Literature for Ireland. She has written a number of short story collections, and her writing has been featured on BBC Radio 3 and 4, and on RTÉ. She has most recently worked alongside Duke Special in adapting The Velveteen Rabbit for the stage and the run begins this month at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast. Esri Ireland, the market leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), has announced that its digital mapping system is being used by Waterford City and County Council to help bring real-time and accurate electoral information to local citizens. It is expected to drive voter participation in the upcoming local and European elections taking place in June. This is the first dedicated resource of its kind to be rolled out by a local authority in Ireland, and provides information in both the English and Irish languages. The Election Hub platform, built using Esri Ireland's ArcGIS technology, is providing 127,000 citizens across Waterford with easy access to transparent information about electoral candidates, existing elected representatives, electoral areas, and voting and registration FAQs. Real-time data from the Register of Electors is streamed daily into the hub, creating a one-stop-shop and putting authoritative and accurate information at the fingertips of local voters. The hub enables citizens to explore and download interactive maps of the six electoral areas within the Waterford region where they can enter their Eircode to find their elected representatives, from local councillors to TDs. Voters can also locate their allocated polling station, and even get directions from their home address. The Election Hub is also leading to more focused campaigning and representation for electoral candidates. Both new candidates and elected representatives can view the electoral area maps within the hub to improve their understanding of the areas they represent or seek to represent. The platform also levels the playing field for new and existing candidates in the lead up to elections, giving everyone equal access to information about the electorate. When elections take place, Waterford City and County Council plans to update online dashboards on the Election Hub as the results of each count are declared. In addition, the use of the technology internally is improving the accuracy of the electoral register. Waterford City and County Council can now easily spot anomalies where clusters of houses may have been assigned to the wrong electoral area or where a voter has entered an incorrect Eircode. The inclusion of a link to the Irish Government's Check the Register website is also encouraging more citizens to verify their information, leading to more accurate data about households. Jon Hawkins, GIS Project Lead, Waterford City and County Council, said: "Waterford City and County Council needed to make information about elections more accessible to members of the public, help them find their polling stations, and remove other barriers to participation. Configuring the hub was very straightforward and it was an intuitive and responsive solution to build. The platform aims to educate citizens, inspire public confidence, and support Waterford's prospective and elected representatives. The easy-to-use hub provides transparent, accessible information for citizens in both Irish and English to promote greater voter participation in elections." Dermot O'Kane, Head of Sales, Esri Ireland, said: "This is such an important platform which has not only improved the quality and accuracy of electoral information, but will ultimately encourage more people in local communities to have their voices heard by demystifying the voting process. It also helps local candidates to better connect with households in their electoral areas. Waterford City and County Council is doing invaluable work in this area and we are delighted to support this innovative use of our ArcGIS technology. Rath National School and Holy Family were involved in a dramatic encounter as Round 2 of the LaoisToday Schools QuizCast got underway.  This was a winner takes all clash with the loser out for this year and the victor into Round 3.  And with everything on the line, the sides produced a stunning battle that had, after another stewards inquiry, to be decided by a tiebreak.  Rath were once again represented by Michael Behan, Aoife Murphy and Michael Nolan while Holy Family shuffled their pack.  In came Carrie Gorman, Alex Korovesi and Dylan Lawlor who performed brilliantly.  We initially thought that Holy Family had won but then realised that we had incorrectly marked an answer that Rath gave as wrong.  We thought Dungarvan was the county town of Waterford but it turns out - surprise, surprise - the children know more than us! Prior to the merger of Waterford County Council with Waterford City Council in 2014, Dungarvan WAS the county town and administrative centre of County Waterford - but that is now Waterford City which Rath NS said.  A tiebreaker was quickly arranged and Rath came through.

Interview with John Martin, author Irish Historic Towns Atlas, no. 30, Dungarvan/Dún Garbhán. John commenced research on the atlas in 2012 and has been helped along the way by many, including William Fraher, Bernadette Guest, Joanne Rothwell, Dave Pollock, Prionnsias Breathnach, Sr Gertrude Howley, Frank and John Daly to name a few in Dungarvan people, along with David Kelly from Youghal and author of IHTA no. 27, Youghal (2015). John also thanked staff from other repositories such as the National Library of Ireland, National Archives of Ireland, the Royal Irish Academy Library, Representative Church Body Library, Valuation office, University College Cork Library in gathering source material for Dungarvan and Chatsworth House for access to the Devonshire estate papers. Irish Historic Towns Atlas no. 30, Dungarvan/Dún Garbhán by John Martin is published by the Royal Irish Academy with support from Waterford City and County Council and in association with Ordnance Survey Ireland. Conor Kane, South East Correspondent, reports that Gardaí are investigating the deaths of two men whose bodies were found in a hostel in Waterford city this evening.

Waterford Distillery is a single malt whiskey distillery located in Waterford City, in the South East of Ireland. The distillery was originally rebuilt in 2004 as a Guinness brewery, shut down a decade later and in 2015 transformed into a state-of-the-art single malt whiskey distillery. This week on Sparking Change, Dil brings us another episode from the sunny south-east, at this years’ Waterford Walls street art festival. Waterford Walls is an international street art festival started by The Walls Project that transforms Waterford City into an open-air gallery. Waterford Walls invites over 50 artists again in 2018 to transform the city walls, continuing to make Waterford an essential cultural attraction and International go-to destination for street art. This year’s festival ran from August 17th – 26th, so unfortunately it is now over. But make sure to mark it in your calendar for next year! In this episode, Dil talks to Edel Tobin, Louise Flynn and Joe Caslin. Edel Tobin is the founder and project manager with Waterford Walls Project. In 2014, she founded New Street Gardens, a pop up garden built on a derelict site in the city. In 2017, she launched Patterns of Light: a lighting display along the Quay in Waterford. Dil and Edel discuss the progress the festival has made in just four years, with fifty artists and over two hundred applicants for this year’s festival. Louise Flynn is a visual artist who works in Waterford and Kilkenny. She has curated many mural projects and artwork for festivals and exhibitions. She was recently invited to create a mural for Wynwood Embassy in Miami. It is this experience that drives her passion to see this art form transform Waterford City and capture the imagination of the community, as artists and people work together. Dil and Louise discuss the origins of the festival, the changing perception of street art, as well as street art’s ability to spark change. Check out Louise’s tattoos—she is a tattoo artist—here! Joe Caslin is an illustrator, street artist and teacher. He is also responsible for some of the most talked-about and thought-provoking street art seen throughout the cities of Ireland. He has a piece in this year’s festival called ‘Consent’. Dil and Joe discuss Joe’s piece in the festival: his departure from the theme of mental health amongst men to the very relevant issue of consent, as well as the Save Nonso campaign he is also working with.
