**Community Connection: Weighing In on Taxes and Infrastructure**This week on Community Connection, we're tackling some of the biggest issues facing our community: taxes and infrastructure. Join us as we dive into the proposed vehicle tax increase and its potential impact on our roads and residents. We'll also explore the city's plan to fix crumbling roads and the mayor's opposition to the proposal. In this episode, we're joined by City-County Council President Maggie Lewis and Assistant Majority Leader Andy Nielsen, who share their insights on the proposed tax increase and its potential benefits. We'll also hear from listeners who are concerned about the impact of the tax on their wallets and the state of our roads. From the city's plan to fix crumbling roads to the mayor's opposition, we're covering it all.One of the key points of discussion is the proposed vehicle tax increase, which would raise $50 million annually to fund infrastructure projects. The council believes this is a necessary step to secure matching state funds and address the city's infrastructure needs. However, the mayor argues that the city has tripled road funding over the past decade without raising taxes, and that now is not the time to ask families to shoulder an additional financial burden.Tune in to hear the full conversation and join the discussion on the proposed vehicle tax increase and its potential impact on our community. Ageing mind and impact of social media on the brain up for debate at Robert Boyle Summer School June 4 to 7 What effect does social media have on the mind? What changes take place in the ageing mind and what goes on in the minds of serial killers? All will be revealed as avid conversationalists and the culturally curious gather for four days of intriguing discussion and debate. 'Mind and Matter' is the theme for this year's Robert Boyle Summer School, a not-to-be-missed gathering from June 4 to 7 that promises thought-provoking talks, discussions and entertainment in Waterford city and Lismore. This year begins with a special opening evening with SETU forensic psychologists Dr Lorraine Bowman Grieve and Dr Jennifer O'Mahoney as they explore our fascination with true crime and serial killers, followed by a weekend full of engaging conversation and social events. The Summer School is a weekend event for adults interested in exploring the role of science in our culture, organiser, Eoin Gill said. It's an annual pilgrimage to the south east for many from across Ireland. "The annual Robert Boyle Summer School is in the tradition if Irish cultural summer schools -very much a Festival for adults, not a school; focusing on Science, but not for Scientists," Eoin Gill said. "We explore where ideas come from and how they impact and affect how we see the world today. The annual Robert Boyle Summer School brings together speakers across various fields on a particular theme relevant to society. This year's Mind and Matter theme will resonate with our audience and we look forward to really good, mind-opening conversation and debate. "We're honoured that this year, we will be joined by excellent speakers and experts in their field, among these Prof. William Eaton head of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Georgia Southern University; Dr Emma Farrell from the Department of Psychology at Maynooth University, and Regius Professor Rose Anne Kenny from the Trinity College who leads the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing and is author of the best-selling Age Proof : The New Science of Living a Longer and Healthier Life "We're privileged to also have Prof. Mark Cunningham from Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience with us for the 2026 Festival, along with Prof. Luke Gibbons from Maynooth University. In addition to the talks and discussions, the weekend features an array of entertainment, social gatherings and the iconic Garden Party in the stunning surrounds of Lismore Castle Gardens," he explained. The Robert Boyle Summer School is organised by CALMAST, South East Technological University's STEM Engagement Centre in partnership with Lismore Heritage Centre, with support from Waterford City and County Council, Lismore Castle Estates, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), local industry West, Waters, Sanofi, Haleon and Bausch and Lomb. Clare County Council drew down less than half of its allocation under the Tenant in Situ scheme last year. The local authority spent just €1.45 million of the €4 million available to it under the scheme which allows councils or the Housing Agency to purchase rental properties when the landlord is selling to prevent tenants falling into homelessness. The Government indicated in February that it plans to tighten the scheme as it's concerned some local authorities are too reliant on acquiring homes and aren't putting enough resources into building new ones. Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Clare Colleran-Molloy claims the scheme should be tweaked as it doesn't have a funding stream for properties in need of renovation.

Longford County Council has launched MyCoCo, a new secure online payments platform that allows Local Authority housing tenants to pay rent online, providing a faster and more convenient way to access payment services. The MyCoCo platform enables Local Authority housing tenants to make payments at a time and place that suits them and supports greater access to digital council services across the county. This is an additional method for Local Authority housing tenants to make rental payments. Tenants continue to have the facility to make payments through the household budget, by standing order, by telephone, to the Rent Collector or in person at the Cash Desk. The online service has been carefully developed and tested in collaboration with Council staff across Housing, Finance and Information Systems, with strong governance and data protection measures in place. Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Garry Murtagh said, "The launch of the MyCoCo online payments system is another positive step in making local authority services more accessible for the people of Longford. By offering a secure and convenient way to pay housing rents online, the Council is responding to how people want to interact with services today, while continuing to support those who prefer traditional payment methods." Chief Executive of Longford County Council, Paddy Mahon, said, "MyCoCo is about improving the customer experience while ensuring strong financial controls and data protection standards. This platform provides a modern, secure and reliable way for Local Authority housing tenants to pay rent online and supports a more efficient service delivery across the organisation." The introduction of MyCoCo forms part of Longford County Council's ongoing programme to digitise services, increase digital inclusion and provide greater choice in how customers engage with the Council. While the platform is currently being rolled out to Local Authority housing tenants, it is planned to extend MyCoCo to other customer groups, including rate payers, in the future. Customers will continue to be supported through a phased rollout of the platform, with clear guidance and assistance available to those using the service for the first time. For more information on how to pay online through MyCoCo, visit www.longfordcoco.ie or contact Longford County Council. See more stories here.

Residents in parts of Shannon have been left quite literally in the dark, with claims that some housing estates have gone without proper public lighting for up to three years. Questions are now being raised about safety, accountability, and why the issue remains unresolved, with responsibility seemingly unclear between Clare County Council and the ESB. So how has it been allowed to go on for so long — and when can residents finally expect to see the lights come back on? Joining Alan Morrissey to discuss this in more detail was Shannon Banks Sinn Fein Councillor, Cllr James Ryan. Clare Fm received statements from both ESB and the County Council regarding the issue: Statement from ESB: “Some public lighting faults in Co. Clare may require the attendance of ESB Networks crews to resolve. In such cases, crews are dispatched following a request from the local authority. However, the broader maintenance and repair of public lighting remains the responsibility of the local authority and their appointed contractors. For the majority of public lighting faults, ESB Networks crew involvement is not necessary for repair work to proceed. Where our attendance is requested, ESB Networks prioritises public safety and ensures crews are made available accordingly. It is important to note that ESB Networks does not have visibility of the number or location of public lighting faults, as this information is managed by Clare County Council and their service providers. In parallel with ongoing maintenance support, ESB Networks continues to work closely with local authorities on proactive public lighting upgrade programmes across the county.” Statement from the Council: “The maintenance of public lighting is the responsibility of Clare County Council, with the exception of the motorway network and housing estates not taken in charge by the local authority. Current Lighting issues in the Shannon Municipal District: • There were 5 locations in Westbury estate where recently some lights were not working but they have been unbundled from the direct ESB connection and all lights in the estate are now working. • There is one light not working in the Shannon Banks estate. • In Clonlara there are 3 lights not working. • There are 4 Lights reported to be not working that are part of the ESB Ardnacrusha power station that light the local road but they are not Clare County Council's responsibility. • There is 1 light fault in Parteen submitted last week awaiting repair. • There are 2 lights in Lakyle estate awaiting repair. Work has commenced in Shannon Town on the Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project (PLEEP) which will upgrade the lighting in Shannon to energy efficient LED standard. Overall lighting faults for the county currently stand at 0.19% which equates to 30 lights out of an overall inventory of 15,500 lighting units. Faults do not always mean a light is out and can range from a light is on all day, a light is too dim or too bright or a request for additional lights.” Image © street light by Marccophoto from Getty Images Signature via Canva
