The Democratic candidate joined us last week; now, Republican candidate John Reid took the mic and discussed the campaign and the issues, including reproductive rights and school gender policies. Plus, we asked Reid about turning down the temperature on political rhetoric.Protests earlier this month prompted Prince George's County leaders to pause all data center development, with a promise to assess the impacts and gather more input from residents. The move comes four years after the Prince George's County Council voted unanimously to allow data centers to be built 'by right,' meaning for most sites, developers wouldn't need council approval. Now, leaders are reconsidering that process. We asked Prince George's County Councilmember Wanika Fisher for her thoughts. Plus, we discussed the long-delayed Purple Line and how it could accelerate economic development in the county.Send us questions and comments for guests: kojo@wamu.orgFollow us on Instagram: instagram.com/wamu885Follow us on Bluesky: bsky.app/wamu.org

Clare County Council may have decided not to nominate any candidate for the Presidential Election at a special meeting yesterday, but the occasion wasn't without its drama. One candidate accused the council of actively blocking her campaign to get on the ballot, while the Mayor of Ennis branded one hopeful as unprofessional and disrespectful and said their presentation was a disservice to the women of Ireland. The field of 5 candidates involved activists, Gaeilgeoirs and Mathematicians, but ultimately no budding President obtained the magic number. Clare FM's Daragh Dolan has this report from Áras Chontae An Chláir.
The Clark County Council will debate an amended resolution that broadens from political violence to all violence. Councilor Michelle Belkot, who drafted the original measure after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, says the changes weaken its intent, while Reform Clark County's Rob Anderson calls the new version “watered-down.” https://www.clarkcountytoday.com/news/updated-resolution-to-denounce-violence-to-be-discussed-by-clark-county-council/ #ClarkCounty #PoliticalViolence #MichelleBelkot #CharlieKirk #ReformClarkCounty #MelissaHortman #Resolution #VancouverWA

Send us a textAs communities across America grapple with tension and uncertainty, Montgomery County's 11th annual Friendship Picnic offers a powerful antidote to division. Nestled under the canopy of trees at Wheaton Regional Park, residents from all walks of life gather to celebrate what connects us rather than what separates us."Whatever happens around us here in Montgomery County, we're going to make it work across our various diverse lines, across cultural lines, across religious lines," declares Jim Stowe, Director of the Office of Human Rights and driving force behind the event. His vision of Dr. King's "beloved community" isn't just rhetoric—it's being lived out through food, music, and genuine human connection. The magic of the picnic lies in its simplicity: "Zero drama, 100% fun, 100% food, 100% music." Children form instant friendships at the reptile petting zoo while adults sample unfamiliar cuisines and engage in conversations that go beyond superficial greetings. County Council members, public safety officials, and department representatives mingle with residents, breaking down barriers between government and the people it serves. When asked why friendship matters, responses range from the profound to the practical. "Friendship is the family we choose for ourselves," reflects a visitor from New York. "We learn together and we grow together." A young boy offers the simplest truth: "Without friendship we would all be lonely."In these divided times, the Friendship Picnic stands as a testament to what's possible when we focus on our shared humanity. As County Councilmember Andrew Friedson puts it, the event shows "hope at a time of despair" and demonstrates "what belonging and community really looks like."Join us next September for this annual tradition that reminds us all: in Montgomery County, we're making community work, one friendship at a time.
