Clare County Council is calling for a targeted housing & rehousing strategy that caters to elderly people, particularly those living alone in isolated rural areas. The call follows a motion submitted by councillors Joe Garrihy, Tony Mulcahy and John Crowe at this month's meeting of the local authority. Their motion asked that the Council “resolves to prioritise the development of housing solutions for the aging population in County Clare, with a specific focus on those living alone in isolated rural areas.” This comes ahead of the Government's new housing plan, ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities,' which will be officially launched this morning, Thursday 13th of November. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Sixmilebridge Fine Gael Councillor & Social SPC Chair John Crowe and Shannon Fine Gael Councillor Tony Mulcahy. Leitrim County Council is Bringing Creative Coding Workshops to Families Across Leitrim as Part of Science Week 2025

Leitrim County Council is inviting parents and children aged 7 to 12 to explore coding technology together through a series of free, family-friendly sessions as part of Science Week 2025, which runs from November 9th to November 16th. The OurKidsCode workshops will take place across the county at Leitrim's Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) and libraries. OurKidsCode is a nationwide programme developed by a research team at Trinity College Dublin that helps families learn about technology in an enjoyable, hands-on way. No experience is needed - just a laptop and a willingness to learn something new. The workshops are most suitable for children aged 7 to 12, but everyone is welcome. Leitrim County Council has been supporting the programme for 18 months, and it has already proved a hit in Leitrim communities, with excellent feedback from parents and children alike. During Science Week 2025, the two-hour workshops will take place in Leitrim's libraries and BCPs, giving families across the county an opportunity to discover how coding can spark creativity, build problem-solving skills and boost confidence. As well as being a fun and stimulating way for families to spend time with each other, these educational sessions help to address the urban/rural divide by bringing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) activities to families in rural Ireland. In time, initiatives like OurKidsCode could open doors for future opportunities for people to live and work in their home counties, as so many careers in computing and technology can be done from home. The workshops have also seen significant numbers of girls shine in the fun environment, which could lead to a higher take-up of STEAM careers for young women. Martina Gilmartin, facilitator of the OurKidsCode programme in Leitrim, said: "Working as a facilitator with OurKidsCode here in Leitrim, it has been lovely to see parents and children sitting together, laughing, creating, problem-solving, and being proud of what they achieve as a family. "In this very tech-savvy world, many parents worry about children spending too much time on screens. OurKidsCode offers something completely different - active, creative computer time rather than passive screen time. Coding helps children to think, to problem solve, to plan and sequence, to make patterns and to persevere. In truth, it is about more than coding. It is about connection - between parents and children, between families and communities, and between creativity and technology." Nicola Mc Manus, Broadband Officer at Leitrim County Council, said: "Leitrim County Council are delighted to be part of this very worthwhile initiative with Trinity College and OurKidsCode in bringing coding workshops to young people and their families in County Leitrim. We encourage families to take this opportunity to support our young people to access valuable learning in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths." Fiona Wheeldon, who participated in an OurKidsCode workshop with her sons, said: "We really loved the coding workshop provided by OurKidsCode over four days in Manorhamilton library last year. My two sons (5 & 9 at the time) and I learnt lots about Micro:bit, Scratch & Makey Makey - how to use them and where to go to get our own. My kids are still interested in coding now, with the younger one doing some Makey Makey projects, and the older one doing Makecode Arcade at home." If parents, parent associations, and community groups would like to enquire about hosting Our Kids Code workshops at their local BCPs, they can email nicola.mcmanus@leitrimcoco.ie for further information. To take part or find out more and to register, contact your local library, your nearest BCP, or phone Martina Gilmartin on 087 154 5012. Families can find more information at www.ourkidscode.ie. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 1ú lá de mí Dheireadh Fómhair, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1976 thug daoine comhairle chuig múinteoirí agus tuismitheoirí chun seiceáil a dhéanamh leis na foilsitheoirí an raibh an praghas ró-ard do leabhair don scoil. Dúradh go raibh na foilsitheoirí ábalta an praghas a ardú go dleathach mar ní raibh aon phraghas socraithe ann. I 1993 tháinig na Gardaí amach ag rá go raibh pléascóg thine nua agus dainséarach ann agus go mbeadh pléasc mhór ann. Bhí siad iompórtáilte chuig an tír agus tháinig sé amach go mbeadh páistí ábalta iad a fháil roimh Oíche Shamhna. I 2003 tháinig Lowry amach go raibh sé ag tabhairt suas a shuíochán I gComhairle Chontae Thiobraid Árann chun géill leis an chealú den dé-mandáid. Bhí Seán Fogarty chun a bheith ann in ionad. I 2010 tháinig sé amach go raibh nach mór 70 teach tábhairne chun dúnadh sa chontae mar nach raibh ceadúnas nua acu. Ag an am bhí an chontae an tríú chontae tuaithe is airde a raibh ag fulaingt sa tír. Rinne a lán dóibh an cinneadh chun dúnadh agus gan oscailt arís. Sin Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince le Boom! Sean Fogarty, Moyne. was selected to replace him on the County Council.  2010 - Almost seventy public houses in County Tipperary were looking like they would close permanently if they didn't renew their licences. Tipperary was the third-highest suffering rural county in the country and comes in sixth in the overall list. "Too little too late", that's what we're hearing from some farmers who've already ploughed up and planted fields that were being farmed for nature. They say this is because the government took too long to come up with an extension to their environmental funding. A House of Lords Committee says the Windsor Framework, the post-Brexit agreement between the UK and EU that's meant to simplify trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is "overwhelmingly complex". Powys Council has just closed a consultation on plans for a new farm policy, which includes the possibility of selling some of its council owned farms. The Council says incomes are too low and maintenance costs too high on some of its farms, but local council farm tenants hope farming will remain a key part of council plans. England's current approach to planning for floods is "underpowered and fragmented". That's according to a report from MPs which is published today. The Environmental Audit Committee says the Government should set up a single joint flood reporting and information service and spend more on flood resilience, with a fairer funding formula for rural areas. The MPs say farmers can play a key role, for instance in storing water, but should be paid for their work. We've been talking to all the major political parties over the past few weeks, during party conference season. The SNP conference continues in Aberdeen today and with elections to the Scottish Parliament in May there is a lot to discuss.Over the past few decades many councils have been reassessing their property portfolios and council farms have been sold off. This week we'll look at why, and why some feel that's a mistake. Presented by Charlotte Smith and produced by Beatrice Fenton.

Virginia's statewide elections are now in the home stretch, with both sides pouring money into the races. The lieutenant governor contest might be the most competitive, with the race earning national attention and unexpected endorsements. The Democratic candidate joined us last week; now, Republican candidate John Reid took the mic and discussed the campaign and the issues, including reproductive rights and school gender policies. Plus, we asked Reid about turning down the temperature on political rhetoric.Protests earlier this month prompted Prince George's County leaders to pause all data center development, with a promise to assess the impacts and gather more input from residents. The move comes four years after the Prince George's County Council voted unanimously to allow data centers to be built 'by right,' meaning for most sites, developers wouldn't need council approval. Now, leaders are reconsidering that process. We asked Prince George's County Councilmember Wanika Fisher for her thoughts. Clare County Council may have decided not to nominate any candidate for the Presidential Election at a special meeting yesterday, but the occasion wasn't without its drama. One candidate accused the council of actively blocking her campaign to get on the ballot, while the Mayor of Ennis branded one hopeful as unprofessional and disrespectful and said their presentation was a disservice to the women of Ireland. The field of 5 candidates involved activists, Gaeilgeoirs and Mathematicians, but ultimately no budding President obtained the magic number. Send us a textAs communities across America grapple with tension and uncertainty, Montgomery County's 11th annual Friendship Picnic offers a powerful antidote to division. Nestled under the canopy of trees at Wheaton Regional Park, residents from all walks of life gather to celebrate what connects us rather than what separates us."Whatever happens around us here in Montgomery County, we're going to make it work across our various diverse lines, across cultural lines, across religious lines," declares Jim Stowe, Director of the Office of Human Rights and driving force behind the event. His vision of Dr. King's "beloved community" isn't just rhetoric—it's being lived out through food, music, and genuine human connection. The magic of the picnic lies in its simplicity: "Zero drama, 100% fun, 100% food, 100% music." Children form instant friendships at the reptile petting zoo while adults sample unfamiliar cuisines and engage in conversations that go beyond superficial greetings. County Council members, public safety officials, and department representatives mingle with residents, breaking down barriers between government and the people it serves. When asked why friendship matters, responses range from the profound to the practical. "Friendship is the family we choose for ourselves," reflects a visitor from New York. "We learn together and we grow together." A young boy offers the simplest truth: "Without friendship we would all be lonely."In these divided times, the Friendship Picnic stands as a testament to what's possible when we focus on our shared humanity. As County Councilmember Andrew Friedson puts it, the event shows "hope at a time of despair" and demonstrates "what belonging and community really looks like."Join us next September for this annual tradition that reminds us all: in Montgomery County, we're making community work, one friendship at a time.
