In this episode, Jeff Mains sits down with Tom Rossi, technical co-founder of Higher Pixels and BuzzSprout, to explore what it really takes to build sustainable SaaS businesses. Tom shares the journey from running an internet service provider in the late '90s to creating BuzzSprout, one of the most beloved podcast hosting platforms. The conversation dives deep into the importance of focus over feature bloat, why support should be treated as a product feature, and how community and brand affinity create lasting competitive advantages. Tom also challenges conventional wisdom about video podcasting, shares hard-won lessons about remote culture, and reveals why "you'll never be as dumb as you are right now" is one of the most empowering principles for decision-making.Key Takeaways[4:26] - The Birth of BuzzSprout: How a simple problem (churches wanting to share sermons online) led to building a podcast hosting platform in 2007-2008[6:37] - Design as Competitive Advantage: Creating intentional tension between designers and programmers to achieve the best user experience[7:19] - Support as a Feature: Why your support team isn't an afterthought—it's an unsung feature that drives brand loyalty[8:13] - The Conference Photo Moment: When podcasters asked for photos with the support team instead of the founders—a testament to exceptional customer service[11:00] - Spinning Plates to Focused Teams: The evolution from juggling multiple products to going all-in on BuzzSprout when podcasting exploded[12:11] - The Developer Trap: Why SaaS founders (especially developers) keep building features instead of focusing on sales and marketing[13:58] - Focus on New Podcasters: The strategic decision to stop competing for existing customers and focus entirely on helping new podcasters get started[20:06] - Video vs. Audio Podcasting: Why video is being over-hyped and the fundamental difference between the two mediums[21:51] - The TikTok Disaster Podcast Success Story: How one podcaster used short-form video with disaster images to drive massive podcast growth without ever appearing on camera[24:28] - Respect the Medium: Create 3-5 minutes of engaging video for discovery, not 45-minute talking head uploads[28:34] - The 28 Downloads Benchmark: If you get 28+ downloads in the first 7 days, you're in the top 50% of all BuzzSprout podcasts[34:01] - Building Remote Culture: The challenge of creating autonomy without isolation in fully remote teams[37:15] - Basecamp & Experiments: How Higher Pixels uses the 37signals approach and lets each team experiment with their own leadership structure[42:53] - "You'll Never Be as Dumb as You Are Right Now": The empowering principle that delays decisions until you have more information and encourages running minimal experiments[44:47] - Your First Episode Will Be Your Worst: Why podcasters (and founders) should ship quickly and iterate rather than agonize over perfectionTweetable Quotes"Support is an unsung feature. When someone reaches out into the void at midnight and gets a friendly, helpful response—that changes how they see your brand." — Tom Rossi"You'll never be as dumb as you are right now. Text your thoughts and questions! If you have ever felt like you should be treating yourself better but have no idea where to start, or maybe the idea of being nice to yourself feels strange, you're not alone. Many of us struggle with a harsh internal monologue, feeling isolated in our stress or trapped by rigid societal expectations. That's why, in this episode of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast, I am sharing five simple ways to treat yourself better! In this episode of the Positively LivingⓇ Podcast, I show you how you can move from the theory of self-compassion to practical, daily application, reducing shame along the way.The five tips I cover in this episode include: Audit your internal monologue by first noticing how you speak to yourself in times of stress.Practice needs-based self-compassion, understanding it as an indulgence. Listen to your body's signals of depletion and take them as a sign to regulate your nervous system. Embrace common experiences, reminding yourself that you're not alone in how you feel.Utilize permission statements, allowing yourself to show up imperfect, change your mind, or set limits. Self-compassion isn't built through grand gestures; it's built through small moments of noticing and recalibrating. This week, don't try to master all five techniques. Instead, choose one single practice, try it for a few days and see what unfolds.Thank you for listening! Though the people running the government were different, the structure of the party-state itself had remained the same. If anything, the only real difference was the preeminence that Mao Zedong Thought gained during this period, largely thanks to the support of the PLA.Songs: Long Live Chairman Mao and March of the Revolutionary Youth0:00 Introduction ("Long live Chairman Mao")3:18 Rebuilding the system14:45 "March of the revolutionay youth"15:05 The dismissal of Liu Shaoqi25:40 The 9th plenum28:20 The final campaigns43:00 Lessons learned50:22 OutroBuy bookclub books hereBuy me a coffeeLinks to everythingSupport the showSupport the showSign up for Buzzsprout to launch your podcasting journey: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=162442Subscribe to the Sinobabble Newsletter: https://sinobabble.substack.com/Support Sinobabble on Buy me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Sinobabblepod

Send a textWomen's Power to Heal Mother Earth by Maya TiwariMaya Tiwari's discourse emphasizes the urgent need for individual and collective awakeningamid the interconnected global crises impacting humanity and the planet. These crises include climate change, poverty, hunger, political instability, inequality, healthcare and education deficits, the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and potential pandemics. However, beyond these visible issues lies a more insidious challenge: the shadowy consolidation of global control through a digital framework, particularly under the 2030 global agenda, which threatens humanity's identity, freedom, and sovereignty.Key InsightsInformation Overload and Distraction: The rapid flow of overwhelming information surpasses human nervous system capacity, leading to distraction rather than empowerment. Media sensationalism and staged political conflicts serve as deliberate distractions, diverting attention from the covert construction of a “digital cage”restricting freedoms.Manipulation Strategies of Power Structures: Power elites use secrecy, fear, and controlled narratives to maintain dominance: Influence is traded via secrecy. Status operates as currency. Fear buys silence. Gatekeepers control access and outcomes. These strategies induce polarization, emotional manipulation, and social fragmentation, preventing structural clarity and true justice. The Role of Awakening: The antidote to this manipulation is awakening—an inner shift that strengthens one's mental clarity and emotional resilience. By recognizing and understanding control patterns, individuals can protect their personal frequency from being poisoned and reclaim their power to heal and transform.Humanity's Collective Power: Despite external chaos and power struggles, the collective human consciousness is emerging from complacency. The breakdown of old unspoken agreements that protected entrenched power is creating an opportunity for new justice founded on awareness, presence, and collective governance.Thematic HighlightsThe world's crises are interconnected and multilayered, requiring not only systemic change but deep personal transformation. The real battle is hidden behind everyday distractions, with powerful forces orchestrating a staged sequence to maintain control.Truth is deliberately warped and weaponized to create tribalism and confusion, hindering unified responses.Safety and justice do not come from authority but from individual and collective awakening, reclaiming sovereignty through understanding and presence.Healing the Earth and humanity begins with reclaimingSupport the showMay Peace Be Your Journey: Maya's approach transcends modern feminism by advocating for a holistic restoration of balance, moving beyond the fight for basic rights to reclaiming the innate power of the divine feminine, which includes procreation, forgiveness, nourishment, and cosmic creativity. She stresses the importance of kindness, inner stillness, and compassionate self- tools for healing individuals and society. www.mayatiwari.comwww.facebook.com/mayatiwariahimsa.Buzzsprout.com Mothermaya@gmail.com Get Maya's New Book: I Am Shakti: https://www.collectiveinkbooks.com/o-books/our-books/I-am-shakti Amazon.com Bookshop.org

Part 3 of reuploading classic history episodes in the run up to our book club review of Serve the People! by Yan Lianke. In this episode, we look at how Mao reversed the course of the Cultural Revolution, bringing in the army to end the violence and destruction caused by the factionalism between the Red Guards and other mass organisations. We discuss the much vaunted revolutionary committees, temporary governments made up of a triple alliance between the mass organisations, the Cultural Revolution Group, and the People's Liberation Army. The original aim of the revolution to promote the masses to positions of power in place of corrupt cadres was replaced by the singular quest to restore the country to order. To do this, Mao relied heavily on the PLA, as well as the cadres who not too long ago were seen as public enemy #1.Music clips are from "Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman" and "The People of the World Will Surely be Victorious"00:00 Song "Sailing the Seas Depends on the Helmsman"00:25 Introduction06:23 January Revolution11:50 Song "The People of the World Will Surely be Victorious"12:05 The Triple Alliance14:10 The February adverse current23:20 The Wuhan incident26:24 The 516 purge29:30 Resitance to demobilisation38:10 The failure of the revolutionBuy bookclub books hereBuy me a coffeeLinks to everythingSupport the showSign up for Buzzsprout to launch your podcasting journey: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=162442Subscribe to the Sinobabble Newsletter: https://sinobabble.substack.com/Support Sinobabble on Buy me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/Sinobabblepod

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITSeven years, dozens of pivots, and a community that turned quotes into running jokes—this final chapter brings it all together with candor and a wink. We open the notebook on how a mother–daughter experiment called More Remarks grew into An Americanist, why the blog faded while the mic stayed hot, and what it really takes to keep an indie show alive when life changes and budgets tighten. The decision to archive isn't a surrender; it's a thoughtful choice about energy, cost, and what deserves space as we move forward. We pull back the curtain on the tech and tactics that made a phone-recorded show sound clean enough to ship, and why Buzzsprout earned our trust through years of reliable support, quick replies, and clear communication—even in the face of a security scare. If you're weighing hosting options, tiers, or mastering upgrades, you'll get the unvarnished take on what's worth paying for and when a free plan with a 90-day window makes more sense for a casual side project like Brood Awakening.Of course, the feed wouldn't sign off without a few stories. We unpack the headline-grabber about Burger King inviting customers to call the company president directly, ask how long a stunt like that can sustain real replies, and what “customer-centric” means when the phone won't stop ringing. Then we wade into tipping culture with a Dear Abby spark: should prompts pop up at drive-thrus, and how should we think about service, pressure, and value in a tight economy? Expect strong opinions, practical nuance, and a few laughs along the way.We end where the best conversations often do—with comedy. Tonight's plan to catch Joe Machi leads to a parting question that belongs to everyone: who's the greatest comedian of all time? If you can't crown one, give us your top three. Send a textEmpathy has become one of the most overused—and misunderstood—words in leadership and inclusion spaces. Often framed as a “nice to have” or a soft interpersonal skill, empathy is frequently stripped of its complexity, discomfort, and emotional labor. In my recent conversation with Matthias Biehl on The Cultural Curriculum Chat™ Podcast, we explored what empathy really looks like in practice—especially when people don't share the same identities, backgrounds, or worldviews.Matthias brings over eight years of experience working in inclusion and organizational culture, grounded not only in theory but in lived experience. He challenges the idea that empathy is easy, pointing instead to its emotional cost—and its power. We discussed why organizations struggle to talk honestly about bias and belonging, how psychological safety is often misunderstood, and what happens when inclusion becomes performative rather than relational. One of the most powerful takeaways?Empathy isn't about agreement. It's about engagement. In polarized workplaces and communities, the ability to stay present, curious, and accountable may be one of the most critical leadership skills we have.If you're ready to rethink empathy—not as softness, but as strength—this conversation is for you.

The Florida-born musician spent summers with her family on her greatgrandmother's property in Sylva, North Carolina, and Appalachian folk music inspired her most.“When I was, like, 12, I got into singing Scotch-Irish murder ballads,” Russ recalls about her musical upbringing. “In high school, I got more into country music, the great songwriters like John Prine and Townes Van Zandt and people like that, and I decided I wanted to write songs.” Stay tuned to learn more! Two dear friends and Film Festival colleagues attempt to bridge the gaps of their long-distance relationship — and their own film educations — through a bi-weekly screening and discussion project of the gap films that have eluded their cinematic discovery. On this week's call, Scott and Jack confront the quiet, digital dread of Michael Haneke's Cache (2005) — a surveillance-era domestic thriller that transforms bourgeois guilt into a slow, inexorable haunting.Follow Blindspotting on Facebook and Buzzsprout.

Love the show? Have any thoughts? Click here to let us know!On this week's episode, we welcome one of Kenzie's best friends, Lindsay, as we travel to the Show-Me State, Missouri! Kenzie shares the strange and unsettling story of the prominent Swope family, whose household was rocked by a series of sudden deaths in a very short period of time. The family's trusted in-house doctor insisted the deaths were from natural causes, but the nurses caring for the patients began to question his treatment methods and the care being provided. Was the Swope family simply the victim of tragic coincidence? Or was something far more sinister unfolding behind closed doors? Christa Dhimo is a New England Podcaster who I hadn't had much of a chance to get to know until I talked about my sustainability podcast in our community, and Christa, Founder of Impono - Senior Business Advisor, went full-on nerdy about DIRT. Christa hosts a podcast about business questions called Ask Christa, where people will write in whatever business questions they might have - from executive to employee and everything in between, because she's seen it all - and she answers them on the podcast, with sources and lots of notes to follow.Christa says "dirt/soil is the foundation of everything that fuels life." She reuses leaves and tired soil to make healthy soil and goes into detail about how easy and inexpensive it is, and all you can do with it. Her excitement about all of this is infectious. You can learn about Christa's business Impono here: https://impono-llc.com/If you have any questions about business at all, go to https://www.askchrista.com/Christa is only on Linkedin for socials here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christadhimo/Send me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Disconnection doesn't usually explode—it leaks in through a thousand tiny moments until voices go quiet and energy fades. We sat down with leadership futurist and change strategist Melinda McCormack to chart a path back: a practical, human way to lead with empathy that drives performance without sacrificing people.Melinda shares her personal journey through loss alongside high-stakes corporate change, revealing how trauma and bias can make even the strongest leaders feel small and unseen. From those lived lessons comes PULSE, a five-step framework that turns empathy into action: clarify Purpose aligned to values, Unlock your emotional code to shift from reaction to response, Learn tools like vulnerability and humility, Shift with daily habits that stick, and Embrace change by balancing the heart that feels with the mind that leads. We dive into why emotional fitness is a trainable skill, how mirror neurons make culture contagious, and what leaders can do to create psychological safety so teams feel seen, heard, and valued.Expect clear, usable tactics you can try today. You'll hear how a single ten-second pause can flip a heated exchange, how to spot slow-burn disengagement before it becomes quiet quitting, and why “listening is the quiet art of influence.” We unpack triggers, cognitive biases, and the subtle ways meetings spiral into aggression and defensiveness—and we show how to bring them back to focus, trust, and useful outcomes. If you've ever wondered how to make empathy a competitive edge, this conversation gives you the map and the mindset to start.
