While China does have SOME soft power, arguably its lack of the charm of its neighbours and rivals means its culture and ideology is often met with suspicion or outright rejection. This can lead to difficulties when interacting on the global stage, for example when it comes to pandemic management, border relations, or the promotion of language and culture. Do small wins like the success of the video game Black myth: Wukong present a way out for China's cultural tzars? Send us a textWhat happens when we break free from our reading comfort zones? Nita Creekmore, author of "Read Outside Your Bubble," returns to the Cultural Curriculum Chat podcast to explore this transformative question with host Jebeh Edmunds. Creekmore's journey began as a Black little girl rarely seeing herself represented in books. "Oftentimes Black little girls were like the little sidekick or the little friend and then they kind of were in and then out of the story," she recalls. This experience fueled her passion for diverse literature and eventually led to her creating the hashtag #ReadOutsideYourBubble, which evolved into both her educational philosophy and the title of her thought-provoking book.At the heart of Creekmore's approach is the LEAP framework: Learning (incorporating mirrors and windows), Equity (ensuring representation of marginalized stories), Accessibility (finding ways to obtain diverse books), and Purpose/Professional learning (intentional implementation). This comprehensive roadmap provides educators with practical strategies for building inclusive reading environments where all students feel seen and valued. For teachers hesitant to incorporate diverse literature, Creekmore suggests starting with interactive read-alouds. "I feel like a read aloud is like the bridge," she explains, recommending teachers prepare thoughtful discussion questions and create space for student connections. She emphasizes that diverse books benefit all students—not just those from marginalized backgrounds—by expanding worldviews and fostering empathy.Creekmore's wisdom extends beyond book selection to address classroom climate, offering insights on community building, professional learning through peer observation, and advocacy strategies like grant writing for book acquisition. Her approach balances scholarly understanding with practical implementation, making inclusive literature accessible to any educator willing to begin the journey.Follow Nita Creekmore @LoveTeachBless across social platforms and subscribe to her blog at www.love-teach-bless.com for ongoing inspiration as you expand your own reading bubble and help others do the same. 271. Character vs Skills: Decoding the Hiring Dilemma with Dave MacDonald

What truly matters more in hiring—skills or character? Dave MacDonald, founder of Better Together Group, brings hard-earned wisdom to this age-old question. After being fired multiple times in his twenties ("I was a lousy employee"), Dave transformed these setbacks into powerful leadership lessons that now guide his successful HR and staffing business. With refreshing honesty, Dave introduces us to his "WTF philosophy"—Work hard, Tell the truth, Finish the job—and explains how these principles shape his approach to identifying standout candidates. Through his powerful furnace metaphor, he demonstrates how the right combination of intensity (the fire), integrity (the firebox), and intentionality (the ductwork) creates teams that genuinely thrive together.Beyond philosophical frameworks, Dave offers practical, immediately applicable interview techniques. Learn why asking for multiple examples of the same character trait reveals authenticity, how pattern interruption separates rehearsed answers from genuine responses, and when to prioritize filling a position versus waiting for the perfect candidate. His advice balances real-world business needs with the pursuit of character-driven cultures.Perhaps most compelling is Dave's vulnerability about his own leadership journey. "I'm still very confident, but I'm also a scared little boy inside at times too," he admits, reminding us that authentic leadership requires acknowledging our full humanity. Whether you're hiring for your organization or preparing for your next career move, this conversation provides a fresh perspective on what truly matters in building successful teams.

Initially skeptical about pursuing a career in film, Tyler Schwanke's younger, practical self chose to take a journalism course at college. However, his true calling in film and storytelling beckoned, and he tried out a number of programs, before completing his mixed degree. After college, back in his high-school bedroom at his parents' home, Tyler needed to earn some money, and took a security job, where in his mind he began planning a fantasy of how an aspiring filmmaker might make some money – through nefarious means – to fund his passion.Moving into a recruitment role, Tyler's employer offered funding for further education, and since he had begun dabbling in writing, Tyler took the opportunity to learn more about the craft.Tyler's first published novel, Breaking In – an evolution of his earlier heist fantasy – was not the first he wrote, and in this chat we explore the challenges and triumphs of Tyler's creative process, as he reveals the value he gleans from feedback and self-critique.Tyler's personal anecdotes about balancing his writing with a full-time job and the support of his wife paint a vivid picture of the grit and perseverance required to succeed in the creative arts, while his insights into the publishing process, including the arduous journey of querying agents and working with editors, offer valuable lessons for aspiring writers. Instagram: @creativityfoundpodcastThreads: @creativityfoundpodcastFacebook: @creativityfoundpodcast and Creativity Found groupYouTube @creativityfoundpodcastResearched, edited and produced by Claire Waite BrownMusic: Day Trips by Ketsa Undercover / Ketsa Creative Commons License Free Music Archive - Ketsa - Day TripsArtworks: Emily Portnoi emilyportnoi.co.ukPhoto: Ella PalletHelp me to keep making this podcast at buymeacoffee.com/creativityfound Book your Podcast Startup Sanity Check here.Support the showWant to be a guest on Creativity Found? Send us a textWhat happens when a former classroom teacher transforms her passion for inclusive education into a global consultancy? Dr. Jessica Werner, founder of North Shore Learning, takes us on a journey through the evolving landscape of educational inclusion in this eye-opening conversation.Growing up in 1980s Central California, Werner witnessed her physician father attending night classes to learn Spanish so he could better serve his patients—an early model of meeting others where they are. This philosophy now forms the cornerstone of her international education consultancy, where relationship-building precedes any intervention. The pandemic has fundamentally altered education, creating what Werner describes as a "pause" in students' academic and social development. "Kids are behind. Classroom management is, in a lot of ways, out of control—and it's not because students are bad kids, because they've lived through a lot." This new reality demands innovative approaches that address interconnected challenges of mental health, behavior, and learning deficits.Werner's team begins each school engagement by listening intently to teachers and administrators about their specific challenges. This assessment-first methodology stands in stark contrast to "one-and-done" professional development models. "When it's your life and you're in it all the time, sometimes it's hard to see your blind spots," she explains, highlighting why external perspective can be invaluable. For parents navigating support for struggling learners, Werner offers both professional guidance and personal empathy. "If you have that feeling as a parent, don't ignore it," she advises, suggesting parents begin teacher conversations by asking: "What are the joys you have working with my child and what's challenging?"Ready to transform your approach to inclusive education? Love the show? Have any thoughts? Click here to let us know! This week, we're heading to the beautiful Bluegrass State—Kentucky! Kenzie kicks things off with a chilling reminder of one of humanity's oldest fears: being buried alive. In the 18th and 19th centuries, this wasn't just a nightmare—it was a very real concern, especially for the Hatcher family of Pikeville. According to local legend, Octavia Hatcher was buried alive, and her restless spirit is said to haunt the cemetery where she was laid to rest. Then, Lauren dives into the shocking case of Amy Bosley—a successful businesswoman, devoted mother of two, and seemingly perfect wife. But in the spring of 2005, the illusion shattered, revealing a web of secrets that would leave the entire community stunned. Join us as we uncover Kentucky's eerie legends and hidden crimes. If you're interested in the group, you can find info about it and join on the website easily."Intentional, Eco-conscious choices create a ripple effect of goodness." "It's too easy to get overwhelmed - too much information, too many "shiny object" vying for our attention (and our dollars). Change starts with small. Change starts with where you are NOW, move slowly and at your own pace to where you want to be."These are both her quotes.
