Roie McCann is the manager of the stunning and unique Clare Island Lighthouse accommodation so Roie is the perfect guest to give us an insider's guide to the magical Clare Island in Co. Mayo, Ireland. This is a part of the country I know very well and love so this is a great chat all about this beautiful part of Ireland.Clare Island stands guard at the entrance to Clew Bay, off Ireland's western Atlantic coast along the Wild Atlantic Way. For almost two centuries, the island's Lighthouse has been a nautical landmark perched high on the craggy cliffs, watching over Achill, Westport and beyond. Once a safe haven for sailors, this heritage property now offers a sanctuary of a different kind. This architecturally majestic, listed building has been lovingly transformed into fully catered, luxury accommodation, complemented by magnificent sea views and an inspiring, natural environment. For more information on the Clare Island Lighthouse check out https://www.clareislandlighthouse.comI love the Blue Book because they are generally family owned and run Irish Country House Hotels, Manor Houses, castles and restaurants. You really get to see Irish hospitality at its best and the properties are generally old country houses, so you get a real sense of the history of the area you are staying in. A Blue Book voucher would always be my top travel gift recommendation and their website is https://www.irelands-blue-book.ie.If you haven't already, I'd ask you to give me a follow on whichever platform you listen to your podcasts and you will be the first to get a new episode. In this exclusive episode, we sit down with Aaron and his father, trainer Fergal McKenna, to explore their family dynamic, the road to success, and the preparations for one of the biggest fights of Aaron's career. From their beginnings in Monaghan to globe-trotting training camps in places like Las Vegas, the McKenna duo shares unforgettable stories from the journey. We dive into the mental and physical sacrifices that have shaped Aaron into a world-class fighter and how Fergal's coaching has guided him every step of the way.Along the way, we also hear about the surprising support from superstar rapper Kendrick Lamar, who's been a fan of Aaron's since his early days in the USA, and what it's like to prepare for a fight of this magnitude on the world stage. With the pressure building and the excitement palpable, this episode is a front-row seat to the fight week hustle of one of boxing's most promising young stars — and the father who's been there through it all. It's the McKenna family, the Rocky Road, and Premier League boxing at its finest. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Fergal McGovern, founder and CEO of VisibleThread, for one of the most enlightening founder chats I've had in a while.Fergal's been building for decades—starting with enterprise systems in the '90s, then launching and selling his first startup SteelTrace, and eventually pivoting VisibleThread through the 2008 crash into a trusted platform serving global leaders like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Comcast, and government agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Australia. What I loved about this conversation is how practical and honest Fergal is—especially when it comes to the real story behind fundraising. He's been through the early seed round, the post-pivot rebuild, and the tough decision to fuel growth with debt instead of chasing a VC path that didn't quite fit.In this episode, we get into:- Why 50% growth year-over-year is solid—but not VC-sexy- What makes a startup truly “VC-eligible” (and what doesn't)-How Fergal built a repeatable sales playbook before hiring reps—and why that mattered more than headcount- The thinking behind VisibleThread's expansion into a second product—basically Grammarly for secure, regulated environments- Why GenAI and agents aren't always the right tool—and when logic still wins- And yes, how designing gardens relates to building great UXIf you're a founder figuring out your funding path—or just trying to scale without losing your mind—this one's for you.Resources:The Hard Thing About Hard Things, Ben HorowitzEpisode 170 of the Full Ratchet podcast: Craig Wortmann - Sales Mastery & Storytelling at Scaling StartupsConnect with Fergal McGovern and VisibleThread:Fergal McGovern: LinkedInVisibleThread: LinkedIn | WebsiteLeave a review and subscribe onApple PodcastsSpotifyMoneyNeverSleeps (website)Email us: info@norioventures.comConnect with Pete Townsend and MoneyNeverSleeps:Pete Townsend: X/Twitter | LinkedIn MoneyNeverSleeps: X/Twitter | LinkedIn | Newsletter

Whither Ireland-US relations? The second term of Donald Trump has been eventful. After just weeks in office, the US president has alienated some of the most pro-American governments in Europe with his interventions in the war in Ukraine and his moves towards an accommodation with the aggressor in the conflict, Russia. He has also promised tariffs on goods from the European Union and strongly criticised EU laws and regulations being applied to American companies operating in the bloc. The next edition of IIEA insights will look at how this upheaval in transatlantic relations is affecting Ireland's traditionally close ties with the US and how those ties might change over the next four years with Larry Donnelly, Law lecturer and columnist with the Journal.ie; Brian Jensen, retired US diplomat and former Section Chief at the US embassy in Ireland; Niamh King, Director of the Aspen Security Forum; and Fergal O'Brien, Executive Director at Ibec.
My guest today is debut American novelist Barbara Boyle who tells us all about her new book Pinch Me: Waking Up in a 300-Year-Old Italian Farmhouse. The author writes in her debut novel about her journey from a busy American life to an idyllic one in northern Italy where she started a new life in Monforte d'Alba, a picturesque town in Piemonte restoring a centuries-old farmhouse. So if you, like me, loved “A Year in Provence” then this book about travel, moving abroad, cultural immersion, food and personal transformation is for you. We chat about the dream of retiring to a village in another country and everthing that comes with that move. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we're venturing back to the 90s with Fergal Lawler from the massive band The Cranberries. They were all over the radio at the time with hits like “Linger” “Zombie” and “Dreams.” They're probably the second biggest band from Ireland, after U2. After the devasting loss of singer Dolores O'Riordan in 2018, Fergal had to find the confidence to venture into a new way to express himself – moving into composing for film. Fergal also gets into the formation of The Cranberries, how they wrote and released "Zombie," and talks about a recent brush with death. "Kilkerrin" by Blue Dot Sessions. My guest travel writer Conor Power shares his experiences from our recent trip to the wonderful region of Extremadura in south west Spain on the border of Portugal. We chat about the Ribera del Guadiana Wine and Cava Route, in the region of Extremadura and its wine-growing tradition and exquisite regional gastronomy, historical Roman and Moor heritage, archaeological sites, monasteries and castles. This area is where the Spanish go on holidays for a cultural and food fix. It is in a way an idealised version of Spain with open planes of fields of vines and olive oil as far as the eye can see to the distant horizon. Think spaghetti westerns landscape where farms are often 1,000's of acres. Where brilliant sunsets blaze the land orange every night. The capital Mérida is a destination you should put at the top of your list when it comes to visiting Extremadura. As the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania, Mérida boasts an impressive collection of Roman ruins that have earned it the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Roman Theatre, still used for performances today, is a remarkable testament to the city's ancient past. Porto is gaining a reputation as one of Europe's coolest cities both as a holiday destination and as a gateway to northern Portugal.I explore this great city and the Minho region above Porto with lush green hills and Vino Vert vineyards and the stunning medieval towns of Braga and Ponte de Lima. I also talk about the areas below Porto including the Douro Valley, the Arouca region and the River Paiva which is great for rafting. Me and Sebbe are still trying to patch together a transition episode from the 19th century which we have now been discussing for more than a month as well as the more contemporary mess that is to come during the inter-war period of the building up of the Swedish State Institute for Racial Biology. The transition in question involves the imperialist philosophy of irrationalism and vitalism, represented above all others by Nietzsche, as the Bourgeoisie, after the 71 Paris commune, finds itself being utterly incapable of intellectually dealing with the new question of the organised proletariat and opt out for a more barbaric and primitive interpretation of the Aryan Myth.It also sees the birth of Nordism and the pop-literary production of teenage idols for Hitler, Himmler and Rosenberg during their youth in the form of Scandinavian explorers. Sebbe is reading old travel journals of these proud grave robbers and I'm going through blond and blue eyed reason-for-sterilisation-journals of the 30s, If all goes well we will release this episode next weekend. In the meantime please make due with this very entertaining conversation I had with Fergal of the Kingless Generation Podcast last year, which he has been kind enough to allow me to post here as well. Please check out his podcast it is an absolute gem for those real heads interested in the deep history of class struggle and paleo-parapolitics. [Episode Description]Marcus' travels around China and Europe, Daoist geomancy and natural foods, archaeobotany, the artefact versus the container, peoples' archaeology and anti-malarial drugs during the Cultural Revolution, the immunology of smoking mugwort on different continents, ergot bacteria and sacred exstatic experiences, iron as a democratic metal, destruction of surplus as value producing spectacle, Jim Jones as stage magician, Hegel and ritual cannibalism, the word “apophatic”, the pedastal and the figurine, Thomas Aquinas' friends boiling the meat off his bones, the whip inside the mind, the (di)vision of labor, Sino-Japanese comparisons, restoration versus acceptance in curatorship, insides and outsides of Kyoto and the rule by retired soveregns, Buddhist clerks and bean counters, Amino Yoshihiko: peasants are more than just farmers, Japanese castles are all fake, Latin poetry under Mussolini, the division of labor as the thing that the most successful Indigenous societies kept at bay, Adam's calendar in Mpumalanga
