Los Angeles based singer/songwriter, Lauren Ruth Ward, relocated to the West Coast from Baltimore to perform and record in the music capital of the country. Lauren is a tireless performer, belting her savvy blend of soulful rock and roll and psychedelic disco at virtually everyvenue in Southern Californa, from the The Bootleg Theatre to the Viper Room, and partnering with organizations like SOFAR-SoundsLA, World Arts, and Play Like a Girl. Recently enlisting producer/engineer, Grey Goon (Champagne Fever, US Royalty) for her full length LP, Lauren has also partnered with former Paperhaus guitarist, Eduardo Rivera, resulting in songs that draw from early 60s blues/psychedelia to today’s pop while still maintaining her distinctly high octane vocal style. She is back in the studio recording new material as a follow-up to her recent self-titled EP.

Phian interviewed Paperhaus last Thursday before they played Local Band Local Beer at Tir Na Nog Irish Pub in Raleigh. (We interviewed Paperhaus back in September during Hopscotch, too!) During this interview, you can hear four songs: Cairo, All Through the Night, Helicopters, and Untitled.
DJs Trillian and Coyote talked with Paperhaus during Hopscotch 2014.
The idea of a house show is nothing new, but over the past few years, Washington, DC has seen a veritable explosion in the number of highly structured alternative venues popping up in every part of the nation’s capital. On a cozy street in Petworth lies the Paperhaus, the veritable epicenter of this movement, and in it resides one Alex Tebeleff. Not only does Tebeleff play in a band that shares it’s name with the house, but he has spearheaded a resurgence in DIY, or DIT (Do It Together), that has not only brought the varied DC scene closer together, but has paved the way for more and more musicians and music fans to try their hand at concert promotion right in the comfort of their very own living room. We sat down with Alex on the back porch of the Paperhaus recently to talk about how he got his start putting on these shows, how he sees this movement growing, and how the DC scene is continuing to amaze.
