Mon Laferte and Francisca Valenzuela are both Chilean singer-songwriters using their platforms to draw attention to important issues while creating meaningful change. From Mon walking a red carpet in 2019 at the Latin Grammys, bare-breasted, with words calling out femicide, to Francisca’s founding of Ruidosafest, the all-Latina music festival and research platform, the two women are working hard to change the game. In today’s episode of Latino USA, we speak to both of them about feminism, their music, and how the ghosts of Chile’s musical past guide them to keep pushing for change. Latino USA is the longest-running news and culture radio program in the U.S., centering Latino stories and hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa.
Today's guest is a multi-Latin-Grammy-winning songwriter and producer with a wall of platinum records — and one of the few people in music willing to say the quiet part out loud. He came up as an actor and a rapper, moved to LA broke, stumbled into songwriting, and turned it into the kind of career most writers spend a lifetime chasing. He's also built one of the sharpest voices in the room as the host of his own show, Good Luck With Gino. This is one of the most honest conversations we've had about how the music business actually works in 2026 — not the clean version, the real one. Why roughly 75% of working writers now survive on K-pop. How the pitch song quietly died and took the professional songwriter down with it. Artists taking songwriting credit on songs they didn't write — and exactly how labels split the writers up to play them against each other and shave points. Gino lays out the one rule every songwriter needs before their next cut, when it's worth standing on business, and when you "roll over like a dog" because the record's too big to lose. And The Writer Is... Gino The Ghost! In this episode of And The Writer Is, we go deep on:• How he came up — actor, rapper, broke in LA, then stumbled into songwriting• Treating every podcast episode like an album of singles• Why ~75% of working writers now live off K-pop• What pitch records used to be — Clive Davis, Barry Manilow & the lost art of outside songs• The death of the professional songwriter (and why talent-show winners get nothing now)• Artists taking credit for songs they didn't write — and how to combat it• The "$15K buy-me-out" story & when to stand on business vs. roll over• The split shakedown — how labels pit writers against each other, and the rule that beats it• Why generosity makes you more money than being a prickAnd much more...
It is Pride Month, it is primary season, and the Democratic Party is having a moment. Brian and Glennis are back with our third-time guest, political strategist and one of the fastest growing podcasters in the game right now, Keith Edwards, for a wide-ranging conversation about Trump's health, the gerrymandering debate splitting the left, and the Patagonia versus Pattie Gonia trademark war that took over every progressive's Threads feed this week. But first, we have to talk about Maine. Graham Platner, the oyster farmer and Marine veteran running to unseat Susan Collins, is now facing reports that he sexted multiple women early in his marriage, the latest in a string of controversies that includes a covered Nazi tattoo and a pattern of bad online judgment. Brian and Glennis land in very different places on whether any of it matters, and the conversation ends up being less about Platner specifically and more about what Democrats are actually looking for in a candidate right now, and what they are willing to overlook to get there. Then Brian lifts the mood with the Oath candidate of the week: Bobby Pulido, a Latin Grammy winning musician running to flip a gerrymandered seat in Texas by performing at quinceañeras and meeting voters where they actually are. Glennis, reporting from Washington DC, takes us to the White House lawn, where a UFC cage is going up for Trump's 80th birthday. After that, Jared Polis, the Democratic governor of Colorado - who under pressure from Trump - commuted the sentence of Tina Peters. Miss Peters, if you're nasty, was the election denier convicted of tampering with voting equipment. She walked out of prison and went straight to Steve Bannon's podcast to call herself a political prisoner and accuse Democrats of cheating in the midterms. Polis was censured by the Colorado legislature and responded by showing up to a public event with his mouth duct-taped shut. Brian and Glennis are speechless, and then they are not.We also check in on the AI IPO wave, with SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI all signaling public offerings at a combined valuation approaching three trillion dollars, and what that level of speculative concentration in the market actually means for the rest of us.Then Keith Edwards joins the pod. He makes the case that authoritarianism, while real, has not fully landed the way some feared, and that Democrats are in a stronger political position than they have been in a decade. He tracks Trump's health with his signature forensic attention, flags six days without a public presidential appearance, and wonders out loud why the mainstream media is not pressing harder on the story. He and Glennis dig into the Patagonia versus Pattie Gonia lawsuit, the online mob dynamics that made it impossible to read clearly at first, and why trademark law exists to protect small businesses too, not just outdoor apparel giants. And he and Brian go back and forth on gerrymandering, with Brian now firmly in the outcomes camp and Keith holding the line on means. Also, Keith did not respond to Pattie Gonia's DMs. Glennis is wearing what may or may not be a Proud Boys jacket. Brian does his Rick Devens impression. And the gang has some things to say about Susan Collins' continued presence in the United States Senate. If you are enjoying the show, leaving a review wherever you listen goes a long way and helps more people find us. Keywords: merengue, merengue house, merenhouse, pambiche, música dominicana, Techy, Techy Fatule, entrevista exclusiva, nueva música, artistas dominicanos, Chula, álbum de merengue, Fefita La Grande, Latin GRAMMY, música latina, cantautora dominicanaSigue a Marysabel Huston en sus redes sociales: Instagram y Threads: @marysabelhuston TikTok: @marysabelhuston Facebook: Marysabel.

► Album Flamencas (Warner Music Spain 2025). With a career spanning over three decades—from the pioneering rock of Poligamia to his latest award-winning album, Bogotá—Andrés has become a global ambassador for Colombian culture. A multi-Latin Grammy winner and 2026 Grammy nominee for his album Bogota, Cepeda visits the podcast to discuss his upcoming performance at the Riviera Theatre on May 10. Highlights from the conversation Cepeda reflects on his 30 years in the music industry, offering insights into his creative process and his evolution from a teenage rock musician to a global solo artist. Starting the US tour in Chicago: Although the tour routing began in Chicago due to logistics, Cepeda shares his excitement about returning to the city where he has performed on several previous tours. The power of storytelling: Cepeda explains how sharing the anecdotes behind his songs helps him connect with multi-generational audiences, including those who may not be familiar with his music. Petrona Martínez is one of the most important Black singers in Colombia's modern history—and she didn't get her big break until she was 60! She’s known as “the queen of bullerengue,” an ancestral music tradition that goes back to times of slavery in the Colombian Caribbean Coast. For much of her life, Petrona dealt with isolation, poverty and invisibility as a Black woman from rural Colombia. In 1998, she became internationally known and in 2021 she won a Latin Grammy. Today on Motherish, we're joined by Latin GRAMMY–nominated artist and mom Paula Arenas to talk about identity, evolution and what it really means to grow through motherhood. We explore the idea that becoming a mother doesn't erase who you were, but instead expands you into multiple versions of yourself all at once. Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0K In this segment, Analytic Dreamz provides an in-depth analysis of Aitana's “Superestrella,” the fourth and final single from her album Cuarto Azul. Born Aitana Ocaña Morales on June 27, 1999, in Barcelona, Spain, Aitana rose to fame as runner-up on Operación Triunfo 2017. Signed to Universal Music Spain, she has secured five Spanish #1 singles including “Lo Malo” and “Teléfono,” with albums such as Spoiler (2019, Latin Grammy-nominated), 11 Razones (2020), Alpha (2023), and Cuarto Azul (2025), the latter earning a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Pop Album and a win for packaging.Clocking in at 3 minutes and 3 seconds, “Superestrella” was released on October 31, 2025, approximately five months after the album dropped on May 30, 2025. Produced by Nicolás Cotton and co-written by Aitana, Carolina Colón, and Cotton, the track centers on themes of confidence, nightlife, and self-worth. It has been described as an explosion of confidence by Los 40, while receiving some critique for feeling less fun than it pretends and touching on fame.In Spain, the song debuted at #22, peaked at #2, and reached #1 on airplay charts. It finished 2025 at #26 on the year-end chart and earned 3× Platinum certification for 300,000 units. Internationally, it reached #13 on the US Hot Latin Pop Songs chart, #58 on the Argentina Hot 100, and placed between #2 and #6 on airplay charts in Guatemala, Peru, Costa Rica, and other Central American markets.Streaming metrics show impressive longevity with over 113 million Spotify streams by late March 2026, a peak daily high of 951,000 streams, and a #1 position on Spain Spotify achieved months after the album release. The 3× Platinum certification was driven primarily by streaming equivalents with minimal reliance on physical sales. Additional boosts came from the album visualizer, the delayed single release, and multiple remixes including a techno version and a DAVIRU collaboration.Analytic Dreamz examines how “Superestrella” exemplifies a slow-burn streaming success model. Rather than immediate chart dominance, the track built organic momentum through sustained airplay dominance in Spain and strong regional performance across Latin America. This delayed viral effect, combined with the album's Latin Grammy momentum, extended its lifecycle well into 2026. The song reinforces Aitana's status as a top-tier Spanish and Latin pop artist with dominant regional presence, though it has not yet achieved major global crossover beyond Spanish-speaking markets. This segment breaks down the strategic timing, consumption patterns, and commercial impact that made “Superestrella” a standout example of modern pop success in the streaming era.Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Argentine singer-songwriter Marilina Bertoldi's brand of rock 'n' roll contains multitudes between the old and the new. Her electric guitar, though it may only be a decade old, has all the markings of a seasoned instrument that has taken the stage at sweaty clubs and music festivals across the Americas and Europe. And the sound of it adds an unmistakably retro touch to Bertoldi's music, which is often accompanied with glitchy and sampled production elements (and a state-of-the-art pedalboard to control it all). All the sonics aside though, it is Bertoldi's intensely honest storytelling, which takes on a deeper meaning on stage, that makes her artistry stand out. Listen to her fiery performance from our Manhattan studios with Manu Fernandez on drums, as well as her words on life on the road and the creative process behind the latest album PARA QUIEN TRABAJAS Vol. I, which recently earned Bertoldi a Latin Grammy nomination. Today on Motherish, we're sitting down with Jessi León — artist, mom and one half of the Latin Grammy–nominated duo behind PJ Kids. Jessi is creating something truly special, a space where music, family and culture come together in a way that feels joyful, intentional and deeply rooted in identity. We talk about raising kids through music, honoring cultura in everyday life and what it looks like to build something meaningful while navigating motherhood. This conversation is all about creativity, connection and the ways we pass down who we are to our children.
Latin Grammy–nominated musician and debut picture book author Sonia de los Santos joins Jed to talk about birds, borders, and the magic of bilingual stories. Sonia shares the inspiration behind her new picture book La Golondrina, based on her song of the same name. The story follows a young girl who becomes fascinated with swallow birds while visiting her grandmother, and slowly begins to see her own migration story reflected in their long journeys. Sonia connects this to her real life, growing up in Monterrey, Mexico, then moving to the New York City area to pursue musical theater, eventually finding her calling making music for children and families. She and Jed swap bird stories (including a backyard turkey named Stella), talk about performing in less‑than‑glamorous multipurpose rooms, and celebrate the joy of seeing every child's face during school concerts. Sonia explains how her music evolved into books, how it feels to let an illustrator "finish" her story visually, and why she's committed to creating bilingual, welcoming spaces where all kids and families feel seen. They dive into big themes—migration, identity, empathy, and the courage to speak a second language (and make mistakes out loud!). Sonia also teases that La Golondrina is the first in a three‑book series, "Books That Sing / Libros que cantan", complete with lyrics, chords, and a QR code so families can read and sing together. Plus, we take a listen back to a conversation we had with children's music legend Raffi during his tour to promote his Nursery Rhymes for Kinder Times project and his lifelong commitment to honoring and respecting children.
Listen to a conversation with Cesar Maldonado, founder and artistic director of Mariachi Herencia de México. Based in Chicago, the ensemble grew out of the Mariachi Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to preserving and advancing mariachi music through youth education. Founded in 2016, Mariachi Herencia de México has evolved from a student project into a dynamic ensemble of young virtuosos, blending deep respect for tradition with a vibrant, contemporary energy. Their 2017 debut album topped Latin music streaming charts and earned a Latin Grammy nomination — a remarkable achievement for a group born out of a community education program. Since then, they've released multiple acclaimed recordings, received a second Latin Grammy nomination, and toured extensively across North America, bringing mariachi music to major stages and inspiring a new generation of performers. Mariachi Herencia de México performs in Indiana February 19 at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington, and February 20 at the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.
This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "José Hernández trumpet interview" And, find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here Few people have had a greater impact on Mariachi music over the past 50 years than José Hernández, and today José joins us to share his musical upbringing, his influences and education, his passion for education and some very interesting insights on balancing a professional music career with business ventures, such as his restaurants. José is a composer, arranger, performer and recording artist, including being a key musical coordinator on Linda Ronstadt's landmark 1987 Spanish album, Canciones de Mi Padre, where he helped guide her pronunciation and the Mariachi direction of the music. Plus, he continues to inspire younger generations through his educational programs, and founding two world-famous ensembles: Mariachi Sol de México®, and Reyna de Los Ángeles®, America's first all-female professional mariachi ensemble. José is, relatively speaking, just down the road from us here at Bob Reeves Brass in Valencia, CA, so if you're in LA make sure to drop by both our shop and the Casa del Sol Cocina down in Irvine, for amazing food and entertainment! On Saturdays, the master could be there himself! About José Hernández: José Hernández is an internationally renowned Mariachi musician, composer, educator and cultural ambassador. He is the founder and musical force behind Mariachi Sol de México, the trailblazing Mariachi Reyna de Los Ángeles, the Mariachi Heritage Society and the Mariachi Rams, in partnership with the Los Angeles Rams. Born on August 27, 1958, in Mexicali, Baja California, José comes from a proud lineage of mariachis and musicians, with family musical roots tracing back to the 1700s. He was named after his grandfather, José Hernández, a musician born in 1901 in Jalisco, Mexico, who helped lay the musical foundation that would inspire future generations. In 1981, José founded Mariachi Sol de México® with a bold vision: to expand the boundaries of mariachi music and elevate the genre beyond its traditional roots in ranchera and golden-age Mexican cinema. Under his leadership, the ensemble has become a global ambassador for Mariachi, known for its musical excellence and genre-blending innovation. Throughout his illustrious career, José has been nominated for four American Grammy Awards and nine Latin Grammys. Jon, Tommy, and Lovett react to the most notable revelations from the new batch, including the many mentions of Trump, and then check in on the president's corrupt dealings, including a half-billion bribe from the United Arab Emirates and an attempt to steal $10 billion in taxpayer money in the form of a lawsuit against his own IRS, the release of 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father from ICE custody and the arrest of journalist Don Lemon, and Democrats' incredible 31-point legislative flip in Texas.
