DL, Evil, and Rachel dig into System of a Down's Toxicity (2001) — one of the biggest metal albums ever made, debuting at #1 the week before 9/11 and getting Chop Suey immediately pulled from radio. The central argument: Toxicity is not a nu-metal record. It's one of the most coherent political albums ever made — a sustained meditation on apathy, incarceration, the Armenian-American experience, and what happens when society stops giving a shit about each other. Prison Song, Needles, ATWA, and "somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep" hit completely different when you actually listen to what Serj Tankian is saying.Along the way: why "Chop Suey" was originally titled "Suicide" (and how the rename was pure SOAD genius), the story of Rick Rubin seeing them at the Viper Room in 1997 and immediately knowing, Daron Malakian's insistence the album fit on one side of a tape at exactly 40 minutes, the time signatures and hemiola that make Toxicity sound heavier than it should, and the direct sonic DNA connecting Faith No More's Epic piano outro to Chop Suey's ending. The influence arc: System of a Down directly cited Faith No More as a key influence — this episode is part of a two-week influence-to-influence series starting with The Real Thing.Scores: Rachel 10/10, Evil 10/10, DL 9.8/10.Part of Verse Chorus Verse's album-by-album deep dive series.System of a Down,Toxicity,Chop Suey,Serj Tankian,Daron Malakian,Rick Rubin, metal album review,Armenian rock,2001 albums, political metal,Faith No More influence, music podcast
The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
You know that moment when you realize the thing you've worshipped as a fan is now your actual job? That's where this conversation with guitarist and recording artist Kieran Robinson begins, and it only gets wilder from there. We talk through how a young musician goes from growing up on Queensrÿche and classic rock to performing alongside Geoff Tate, learning songs with serious technical weight, and walking the tightrope between confidence and imposter syndrome. We get into the real mechanics of making a legacy project work. Kieran explains how he approaches writing and demo-building for Mindcrime III, why the goal is to keep the music in the same sonic universe as Operation: Mindcrime, and what happens when Geoff takes a draft and transforms it with melody, synths, and arrangement choices. If you're into songwriting, producing, or progressive metal composition, you'll hear a practical workflow you can steal, plus the mindset required when the fanbase knows every note and expects the music to be played with respect. Then we shift to the live world: the iconic Viper Room night, the nerves of performing in front of other pros, and why playing Mindcrime feels more like theatre than a standard rock set. Kieran also shares what touring really looks like, from dividing time with Faster Pussycat to the unglamorous truths of backstage riders, band pranks, and recording on the road with portable studios in hotel rooms. We wrap with gratitude, perspective, and the reminder that rock is still a community built on craft, feel, and showing up ready.Subscribe for more interviews, share this with a friend who loves heavy music, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show.Episode LinksGeoff Tate: https://www.geofftate.com/Send us Fan MailSupport the showLinksJay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/JFS Countdowns/Playlists: https://jayfranze.com/playlists/ContactContact: https://jayfranze.com/contact/SocialsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranzeTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranzeX: https://x.com/jayfranzeYouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranzeServicesServices: https://jayfranze.com/services/BooksBooks: https://jayfranze.com/books/MerchandiseMerchandise: https://jayfranze.com/merchandise/SupportSupport: https://jayfranze.com/support/Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/
Tonight's guest, Scott, calling in from Arizona, shares a series of events that began with a close-range UFO sighting in 2010. While driving through Playa Vista in Los Angeles with his wife, Scott witnessed a massive, silent object hovering just overhead. As they passed beneath it, two dark helicopters approached before the object pulsed with light and shot straight up into the sky. A week later, the experience became more personal, with Scott recalling a brief moment of awareness as he was returned to his bed and what he believes was telepathic communication. Not long after, a final disturbance inside his apartment left both him and his wife shaken.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/2026-2/One Life | One Story (Promo)A podcast about real people's lives, each episode centers on a single person and a defining experience,Listen on all podcast apps: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5EE7HbNItkQQbJdtZCHt88Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/one-life-one-story/id1861678226Spreaker:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/one-life-one-story--6823002If you enjoy this podcast, please support the show with a virtual coffee:https://ko-fi.com/ufochroniclespodcastFollow and Subscribe on X to get ad-free episodesX: https://x.com/UFOchronpodcast/Want to share your encounter on the show?Email: UFOChronicles@gmail.comOr Fill out Guest Form:https://forms.gle/uGQ8PTVRkcjy4nxS7Podcast Merchandise:https://www.teepublic.com/user/ufo-chronicles-podcastHelp Support UFO CHRONICLES by becoming a Patron:https://patreon.com/UFOChroniclespodcastAll Links for Podcast:https://linktr.ee/UFOChroniclesPodcastThank you for listening!Like share and subscribe it really helps me when people share the show on social media, it means we can reach more people and more witnesses and without your amazing support, it wouldn't be possible.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/ufo-chronicles-podcast--3395068/support.

This marks the 300th weekly episode of the Night Demon Heavy Metal Podcast, without missing a single week. To celebrate this milestone, Jarvis and Nesbit sat down in Ireland for a chat about where the podcast came from, where it is now, and where it is going in the future. They reflect on their initial mindset when the podcast began, the process of trial and error to perfect format and workflows, and podcasts that influenced this one. They talk about meeting listeners and subscribers "in the wild." They ponder the question of whether there is an end in sight for the podcast. They reflect on 15 years of Night Demon history. And they offer a bold pact for the future.LINKSTalking Maiden Podcast - https://www.talkingmaiden.com/Winds of Change Podcast - https://crooked.com/podcast-series/wind-of-change/ Listen at nightdemon.net/podcast or anywhere you listen to podcasts! In October 1993, River Phoenix crashed out of Johnny Depp's exclusive club, fell onto the pavement, and died. An hour earlier, the 23-year-old rising star had snorted a lethal combination of cocaine and heroin known as a ‘speedball' in the toilets. As he staggered around the club, no one offered Phoenix anything more than a valium to "take the edge off”. How did Johnny Depp's club become such a den of iniquity and excess? And more importantly, how did it survive after the death of Hollywood's golden boy?--Patreon - Ad-free & Bonus EpisodesYouTube - Full-length Video EpisodesTikTok / InstagramSources and more available on redhandedpodcast.com

Ryan is a pop-rock artist whose music blends emotional honesty with classic rock inspiration. Raised in a musical household, he started performing as the drummer in a band with his sibling, touring the UK as a teen with the Euphoria. Influenced by legends such as Queen, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, he later fused that vintage energy with the edge of Muse, Green Day, Panic! At the Disco and My Chemical Romance. After struggling during the pandemic and entering rehab in 2021, songwriting became his lifeline. Now sober and thriving, Ryan is one semester away from graduating USC's Thornton School of Music and has grown a following of over 500,000 on TikTok with original songs and viral covers. With performances at venues like the Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go and the Moroccan, he continues to share music borne from personal struggle. Jason Donovan is one of the most interesting people I've ever met. I grew up knowing him as the golden boy from Neighbours so, it was surprising to hear how desperate he was to shake off that teenage heart throb image.Fame hit him young and fast, and before he'd had chance to figure out who he was, Jason found himself trapped in a world that expected him to stay the same blue eyed, blonde haired version of himself that everyone had fallen in love with.In the ‘90s, he pushed back hard: three-day bender, a coc*ine overdose at LA's Viper Room and using dr*gs to escape the squeaky-clean persona that followed him from Neighbours to the West End.He doesn't regret those years, but says they taught him a hell of a lot about himself. We cover:His need to shake off the teen heartthrob image and be “cool”Bingeing on coc*ine at the height of his fameHow becoming a dad changed everything and led him to quit dr*gsHis relationship with Kylie and how it's followed him throughout his careerWhat it's like to age in the public eyeThis conversation is a reminder that even the brightest stars carry shadows and that facing them can be the most powerful comeback of all.Jason Donovan is Great Company. After emerging as the leading art flick actor of the 1990s, prodding paparazzi's desire to paint him as a “novelty boy” often drove him to outbursts that ended in arrests, wrecked hotel rooms, and a miffed Kate Moss and Roger Daltrey. Join us as we sit down with the incredible Americana rock band, American Mile! These Los Angeles-based road warriors are known for playing over 200 shows a year, and we dive deep into what the rock and roll tour lifestyle is like nowadays, with a special focus on staying healthy on the road. Ever wonder about an iconic riff like the one in "Waiting on a Sunday"? We ask the band: does a riff like that just come to you? Where does that inspiration truly come from? American Mile began with a strong rock foundation but found themselves drawn to the soul and storyteller songwriting of country music. We explore what it was about the narrative elements of country that made them fall in love with it. Their music often resonates with powerful themes of resilience and dedication, especially for those facing difficult times. We delve into their philosophy: where does this spirit of knowing life doesn't happen to you, it happens FOR you, truly come from? We also get to know Colton, the newer member of the band, and hear about his journey joining this dynamic group. From their explosive stage presence cultivated across countless venues like Summerfest and The Viper Room, to their new album "American Dream" following their acclaimed debut "The Longest Road," American Mile is a must-see act. Tune in for an engaging conversation with a band that truly lives and breathes their music! ____ Support the Show: DUNKIN': Try Jamie's favorite summer drink, the Dunkin' Pink Spritz Refresher. "I believe music can save souls."Angie Vertti arrived to Cabo in 2015, she quit a 9 to 5 job and decided to pick up her music career. She likes to say that “music found me”.It didn't take long after her arrival to be called up to the Cabo Wabo and other popular hot spots and trendy bars. Her band pushed me to challenging rock songs, such as; Metallica, Iron Maiden, Journey, Van Halen, Toto, Queen, you name it! The biggest voices in Rock history. She was called up on stage by Sammy Hagar, the “Red Rocker” sharing the stage with him on about 3 occasions. And of course thanks to him taking her under his wing her career had a major boost. In 2019 she did a 6 month contract on Celebrity Cruises. That gave her the opportunity to travel the world. In 2023 she attended the NAMM in LA. There she jammed with a street performer and the video became viral on Facebook, Youtube and TikTok with over 5 million views. 2023 also granted her the dream to be on stages of the Whiskey a Go-Go, The Viper Room and The Rainbow on The Hollywood Strip. That opened doors and opportunities to have more presentations in LA, Vegas and San Diego. Now she has moved to Nashville and looking to continue on her music journey. AS most of the League of Ireland heads for the departure lounge, our co-hosts are back via arrivals to take their regular perch in Oliver Ireland for our mid-season review. We make it there with the help of a stopover on the turbulence of media relations in a small world, before ascending to broader discussions around Josh Honohan's public feedback, the beauty of Galway's defensive formations and Seani Maguire speculating on how far Cathal O'Sullivan can go. This is interspersed with general musings about the futility of our existence, the reasons in favour of a mid-season break, the absence of granny killers in the league, and a Crowded House diversion that is nothing to do with stadium capacities and everything to do with the pre-professionalism haze of the Viper Room sometime in the 2000s. Confused? Soon, we'll all be asking what the Grok is going on. There's nothing artificial about the support we receive from Collar & Cuff, Sport Cosanta, Rascals Brewery and Future Ticketing that makes it all happen.

What's up Bros? Things are getting messy in RHOBH. We pick up in the Viper Room and Kyle and Dorit are still going at each other. Sutton and Garcelle seem to be team Kyle while at the Viper Room, but their stance shifts as we progress through this episode. Boz goes to bat for Dorit implying maybe she had things to get off her chest. Sutton, Garcelle and Kyle get together for a country club day at Suttons. While discussing Dorit, questions about the contents of the texts arise. Things get a little crazier when Sutton implies infidelity and not the instagram issues we've heard about previously. Boz has fibroid surgery and while on the mend, Kyle goes over to "get to know her" aka to do damage control. Sutton, Kyle and Garcelle once again get together to surprise Erika with a pizza party finally at Charles Entertainment Cheese (Chuck E Cheese) and while sharing a slice, Garcelle proclaims if Kyle wants to be a lesbian, be a lesbian. But then Kyle reveals the contents of a text with PK and the text itself alludes to them discussing way more than just memes. Dorit wants to know what is in the texts and the more Kyle defends herself, the shadier it looks. Garcelle goes to check in on Boz and they discuss Dorit some more. The episode ends with Garcelle revealing what Kyle's text said confirming that Kyle lied to Boz's face... After a measured rant on the tragedy that is the American government catering to the whims of a bug eyed bro with $8M to spend on lobbying to get his way, we recap two episodes of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. In episode six, Dorit confronts Kyle about her innocent meme laden texts with PK, Kyle doubles down on the silliness of her caring after not caring previously and the innocent nature of the texts. Then in episode 7, Kyle reads a text she sent to PK and the ladies realize it's more than memes....meanwhile Garcelle celebrates her beach house and family, Sutton is still on the outs with Dorit and plans a pizza party for Erika, Boze introduces us to her man and weathers surgery, all while the former head of EJ Global works with a celebrity designer to refurnish her casita. What's up Bros? We are back with RHOBH and there was so much to discuss this episode we had to break it up into 2 parts. In part 1, we get to meet Boz's boyfriend Keely. Erika and Dorit catch up and Dorit fills her in about an upcoming therapy session with PK. Then we get a little more discussion on whether or not Kyle and PK are texting one another. They also discuss Sutton and her ability to go low when some ladies in the group are going through it. Our theory is that she just doesn't want to be left out and hoped that Dorit would confide in her, and when she didn't she felt left out again and lashed out. Boz and Dorit sit down to recap the therapy session and after a 4 hour back and forth, PK stormed out and slammed the door. But not before he told both Dorit and their therapist "This is why I want a divorce!". There might be some theories out there that this is staged and or exaggerated a bit... but we'll let youse be the judge. Garcelle has an extremely touching scene when she goes over her experience with Oliver and his addiction. Retelling a very difficult night in which she had to refuse to let Oliver into her house. But to see him thriving now with his son and his family around him was pretty special. Dorit and Erika discuss the potential texts between Kyle and PK over facetime before the Viper Room, and Erika gives Dorit the ok to bring it up at her event.... Learn more about your ad choices. What's up Bros? Welcome to part 2 of our RHOBH recap! We pick up at the Viper Room for Erika's event. Sutton expresses concern to J Tilly that shes nervous about Boz getting the wrong impression after Boz said Sutton weaponized Dorit's pain. She immediately approaches Boz in the Viper Room and says "dont weaponize!"... they have a discussion and Boz keeps it cordial in person, but in a confessional its pretty clear that Boz is skeptical of Sutton to say the least... Kyle brings her new pal Kesha to the event and can't help but make a joke regarding the Morgan Wade stuff, to which we say, if you dont want us to talk about it... Why are you bringing it up again? Erika debuts her new single and the ladies sit around the table and Dorit wastes no time getting into it with Kyle trying to figure out the relationship she has with PK. Sutton says another off-color comment that Dorit "can't shield her kids forever" and while we do think that she is attempting to speak from a place of understanding, there is far too much stank on what she said AND she broke rule number 1 of leaving the kids out of it, so this was a huge swing in a miss on her part. This leads to her and Dorit being "CORDIAL" from here on out and not friends. Kyle and Dorit get back into it and the whole group agrees its pretty strange that Kyle and PK still text, even though Kyle continues to defend it. Things escalate and now Kyle is done with Dorit. Who knows where this feud will go but so far this has been an entertaining season and we are hoping they can continue this way. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Dorit confronts Kyle at The Viper Room on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, and as usual Kyle tries to worm out of it.
