“Well, I'm first generation post Civil Rights movement. I came out in 1985, right in the middle of the AIDS crisis. And we went straight to the front lines to fight for our lives. It was Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS and The Actor's Fund that taught an entire generation how to activate. I was always activated, I have no other choice, I don't know anything else.” - Billy Porter Billy Porter. Need I say anything else? An icon, mother, a trailblazer, an Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winner… and here's what we talk about in this incredible episode: Incredible and inspiring stories of rejection in auditions Facing racism in the industry Saying ‘No' and seeing what that did to his career Creating Lola in Kinky Boots Not working for 12 years and coming back Prepping for his new tour The Black Mona Lisa Tour: Volume One This episode is chock full of deeply personal insight, first hand stories, unabashed truth regarding the industry and Billy's life. It doesn't matter if you are an artist or not – this conversation is full of life lessons that will just make you an overall better human. Billy Porter is a Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award winner. Porter began his music career in 1997 with the release of his self-titled (aka Untitled) debut album which spawned the Top 10 "Bubbling Under" single, "Show Me," and the monster ballad, "Love Is On The Way," which also appeared at the pivotal moment in the film, "First Wives Club." He went on to release "At the Corner of Broadway + Soul" (2005), "Billy's Back on Broadway" (2014), and "The Soul of Richard Rodgers" (2017) featuring Pentatonix, India.Arie, Leslie Odom Jr. and Cynthia Erivo, among others. Porter scored his first #1 with "Love Yourself" in 2019 on the US Dance Club Songs Chart. He followed that up with his 2020 reimagining of the legendary Buffalo Springfield anthem, "For What It's Worth," and a fierce collab with The Shapeshifters on "Finally Ready." 2021 saw Porter covering Juliet Roberts club classic "Caught in The Middle" for Red Hot + Free, which supports underserved communities afflicted with HIV/AIDS. He was also enlisted by multiplatinum international superstar Jessie J for "I Want Love." And he delivered a magical turn on Earth, Wind, and Fire's iconic "Shining Star" as Fab G, the Fairy Godmuva, in the 2021 remake of "Cinderella." Porter is a veteran of the theater (Miss Saigon, Angels in America, Grease), and a two time Tony(r) winner, including "Best Leading Actor in a Musical" for Kinky Boots in 2013 and "Best Musical" as a producer for A Strange Loop in 2022. He has also received a GRAMMY(r) for the Kinky Boots Official Soundtrack in the category of "Best Musical Theater Album" in 2014. Porter took home the EMMY(r) Award for "Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series" in 2019 for his work as Pray Tell on Pose, making history as being the first openly gay man to do so. Time Magazine named him one of the "100 Most Influential People" of 2020. Billy released his highly anticipated memoir, "Unprotected," in October 2021. His directorial film debut, "Anything's Possible," dropped Summer 2022 to much acclaim. Now, Billy kicks off his next chapter in music, his first love, with new single “Baby Was A Dancer” arriving March 24th. @thebillyporter “Lin Manuel Miranda changed everything for me and I'm ten years older than him. The internet cracked open a space for the young people to understand their worth. I did not understand my worth early on – I did not understand that the stories could and should come from me. Who could tell the Black, Queer stories better than me? The audacity to understand that and know that and then step into the fullness of it. And that's what I spent my 30's trying to do!” - Billy Porter Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Untitled Group is Australia's largest independent music & events company, running a list of key festivals including Beyond The Valley and Pitch, and selling over 400k tickets per year in the process. Our guest this week, Fil Palermo, is a co-founder and director of Untitled, which he and his partners built from teenagers running DIY club nights into a world class promoter of large festivals booking some of the worlds biggest acts.Australia is a distinctive corner of the global music industry, and Fil guides us through the details and distinguishing features of the local market. We also discuss the mechanics of running a festival, the learning curve required to get up to speed from a knowledge base of not-that-much, diversity and variety on festival lineups, and a whole lot of other stuff as well. Untitled is a great example of an organisation showing it's possible to be serious about music, show real attention to detail in large events, and build something great without the need for corporate backing. This was a great conversation and an episode you're going to enjoy!A quick heads up that the second in the HF20 Scuba mix series will out this Friday. It's called 'Post Whatstep?' and unsurprisingly features a lot of Post-Dubstep. Tunes from Mount Kimbie, Untold, and George FitzGerald, amongst many others. Should artists go to the fairs? Or should we just leave it to the galleries and collectors? Is it too soul-crushing, or are there benefits? The hilarious Jennifer Coates is back to cohost with me this week (yay!) and I took the opportunity to grill her about her recent experience as an artist visiting "Untitled", a major art fair in Miami. Her gallery High Noon was presenting her work there as a solo booth and she went full immersion for 4 days. I went into the episode with a decided "nope" as my answer, but Jennifer kind of brought me around by bringing up some excellent points and ways to reframe one's goals. We cover how to approach gallery booths, recount some outrageous art fair fashion and discuss how to manage all your squeamish feelings while at the fair. You don't want to miss! It's clear that human social morality has gone through significant changes in the past. But why? What caused these changes? In this episode, I chat to Jeroen Hopster from the University of Utrecht about this topic. We focus, in particular, on a recent paper that Jeroen co-authored with a number of colleagues about four historical episodes of moral change and what we can learn from them. That paper, from which I take the title of this podcast, was called 'Pistols, Pills, Pork and Ploughs' and, as you might imagine, looks at how specific technologies (pistols, pills, pork and ploughs) have played a key role in catalysing moral change. Today we're talking about one of early PC computing's most iconic songs, "Trip Through the Grand Canyon" also known as "CANYON.MID" with none other than the composer himself, George Stone! We take a trip down memory lane and discuss how the song was written, how it ended up on millions of PCs around the world starting with Windows 3.0, and its status as a song that remains beloved to this day. George Stone is a multi-talented jazz musician who has been active for over 35 years; he's a performer, composer, arranger, and long-time professor at Cuesta College (Music, Recording Arts, Jazz performance/arrangement/composition). In addition to teaching and live performance, George recently did orchestration and arrangement for the 2022 film Amsterdam. After our interview, George was kind enough to send us a number of gifts that bring us joy: a signed PDF copy of CANYON.MID for Bryan and Gene to cherish (yes really), an unreleased MIDI from 1991 which we included in the show, the above charming side-by-side photo of George 30 years apart (1991 to 2021) as well as a screenshot showing some of the original musical cues he worked on way back when! We checked our facts and sorry George, we forgot to credit you specifically in our talk at the Library of Congress, continuing the unfortunate trend (whoops). Hopefully this episode serves as a decent apology and as always, we hope our listeners enjoy the story and the music as much as we do! Special thanks to virt (aka Jake Kaufman), "The Smash Brothers" and the band WASD for their lovely arrangements of the classic CANYON.MID All tracks composed by George Stone unless otherwise stated 00:00 CANYON.MID - full title 'Trip Through the Grand Canyon' 07:40 CANYON.MID arranged by virt (YouTube) 20:31 Untitled cue from 1991 35:33 CANYON.MID (excerpt) performed at MAGFest 7 by the Smash Brothers (YouTube) 48:03 CANYON.MID performed by the band WASD from the album C:WINDOWSMEDIA LINKS George Stone Bio on Hal Leonard website George Stone Big Band - on Discogs Other mentions mentioned Passport Designs - the company that started it all Amsterdam (film) - wiki page Texting and Driving - album by Dave Tull Libretto jazz club website in Paso Robles

This is a show that I'm sure you're all familiar with. On a midwestern run in 2014, Pearl Jam did something that can be consider unprecedented. It all started in Moline, Illinois where for the first time, they played No Code in its entirety. Three days later, they decide to test out another album in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Yield is played front to back. That's what we'll be covering today, the last full album show that we needed to cover in the modern era! Returning to the show is the author of new Pearl Jam book, Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack of a Generation, Steven Hyden. He'll talk about his experience from that night and what it was like to witness what went down in real time. However, this isn't the only artist that he's been in the crowd to see pull out a surprise full album show. It's a classic album by an all-time legend, find out which one during his interview! As for the show itself, some might've been a little suspicious when they took the stage to Red Dot, but for others that heard rumors swirling round on Twitter, it was a sign that something big was set to go down. The band may have called for a bit of a misdirection early when they invited Cheap Trick's Rick Nielson on stage to do Baba O'Riley as the fifth song in, but once Brain Of J. hit it was off to the races. We'll talk about the entire Yield portion of the set, how they presented it rather close to the album renditions (no Wishlist tag, no Untitled before MFC), when and how the fans figured it out and we'll also come up with what the definitive performance from this set is.

Jean-Michel Basquiat remains one of the most impactful artists more than three decades after his tragically untimely death. His boundary-defying artwork has influenced music, fashion, and film and television. It has also completely transformed the contemporary art world. In 2017, his 1982 piece Untitled sold for $110.5 million. This is the Jean-Michel Basquiat the world knows and now his family has decided to share a more personal side of their beloved son and brother. This spring, his sisters Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux opened a 12,000 square foot exhibition that features hundreds of their brother's artwork, photos, and personal artifacts so visitors can get to know him in an entirely new way.
