In the conclusion of Sara J's epic two-part conversation with RoughGauge's Featured Artist for June 2025, Marc Shapiro, we pick up right where we left off—diving back into the gear talk and Marc's love for integrating the Jake blade into his setup.Marc shares what makes the Jake blade a standout addition to his arsenal, and how RoughGauge's legendary customer service ensured every detail was custom-fit—right down to accommodating his unique whammy bar setup and left-handed play style. From there, we explore how this custom Wilkinson build has seamlessly become a part of his sound, even making its way into the DNA of songs in his catalog. The conversation flows into what's next in Marc's musical worlds, Infinite Drift and Greasy Hands, as he offers a sneak peek at upcoming happenings—including a pig roast on Saturday, September 13th, and what promises to be a legendary Halloween shindig. We also dig into the heartbeat of the Baltimore music scene—from its deep jazz roots and iconic P-Funk residency to its thriving punk, metal, and Baltimore club communities. Marc paints a picture of a city rich in musical diversity, community spirit, and inclusive energy. Then we shift focus to Marc's passion for concert photography—how it sparked while writing for his college paper, the moment he realized he could get a photo pass, and how that led to a journey from point-and-shoot beginnings to capturing iconic artists. He reflects on the highs and lows of the craft, the beauty of small venues, and staying grounded in the love for local music. We wrap with a powerful reflection on creative balance—the importance of stillness and nothingness, and the ever-evolving dance of moving forward, even if slowly.Read Marc's Featured Artist Q&A: https://www.roughgaugellc.com/featured-artistsWhere you can find this week's guest:Greasy Hands:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/greasyhandsband/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GreasyHandsBandInfinite Drift:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/infinitedriftband/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61562600499050Marc Shapiro Media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marcshapiromedia/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarcShapiroMediaWould you or someone you know like to be a RoughGauge Featured Artist? In this part one of another epic two parter, Sara J is joined by the RoughGauge June 2025 featured artist Marc Shapiro.Marc takes us through his influences, and how Slash and Appetite for Destruction played a major role. Marc's shares his love for digging into his favorite guitars player's heroes, going down a rabbit hole that includes a dive into how John Fruciante has a lot of Hendrix in his playing.Marc shares the eclecticness of what he listens to, and how watching MTV after school when he was younger did good things for his musical pallet. They talk about having the guitar player spirit, the perhaps controversial thought of minimal notes - and how sometimes more is said within the silence. Marc gives a peek into what he's listening to currently and the music he's loving that's coming out of Australia. Marc talks about his passion for following the lineage of a sound, and the evolution of guitar playing and music. The duo gets into music biographies, ones they've read and what's next on their list.Marc talks about getting his first guitar when he was ten, followed by his first electric a year later and knowing that being a musician was his dream once he started playing. He relives elementary school, singing and performing 90's grunge tunes at talent shows and back to school night.Marc recalls playing in his older brother's band, and at his bar mitzvah party, an evening that would include Marc crowd surfing. He shares the experience of throwing a music festival - The Rez Ball with his band The Rez, the year he sprained his ankle right before he was about to play two sets, which also happened to be the same summer he played at Warped Tour. Marc shares how he found himself playing with his current projects Greasy Hands and Infinite Drift.Lefties unite! Marc elaborates on what it's like playing left handed, the advantages and disadvantages - and the joy of finding a leftie guitar out in the wild. He introduces us to his ride or die guitars, and the others in is arsenal. And so much more. What is a troubadour? In its simplest definition, it's a poet who puts verse to music. The focus is on the lyrical content and the music is there to serve the storyline. In present day vernacular, the term "troubadour" is usually replaced by the catch-all category "singer-songwriter." Some troubadours are simply singers, perhaps accompanied by a guitar, interpreting another poet's songs. While other troubadours are also poets, writing and singing their own lyrics. Regardless, a troubadour's job is to connect with the listener by bringing the song's story to life. And, after it's over, to make the listener want to hear it again and again on repeat. Because each listen reveals more of the message, it can take a thousand listens to truly know the troubadour's tale. We are Team Derringer (Laura, Alton, and Paul) of Derringer Discoveries. In this episode, we are joined by songwriter Marv Conan of Brooklyn, New York. When you listen, you will hear that Marv is proud to be from Brooklyn and not just from NYC; although, for his voiceover at the end, we somehow got him to say NYC. Marv Conan recently released a song called Judy Joan & Buffy that he wrote about three troubadours who each got their respective starts in the early 1960s, two from Greenwich Village in the U.S. and one arguably from Canada. Listen to the episode to learn more about the Canada controversy. As you will hear, these three troubadours helped Marv to make it through the 1960s after Marv was drafted into the U.S. Army. Marv listened to the troubadours on repeat, back in the day of vinyl records. Recently, he decided to write the song Judy Joan & Buffy to honor these three troubadours who meant so much to him in his youth. The three troubadours are Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Join Team Derringer as we talk with Marv and hear snippets of his song Judy Joan & Buffy sung by UK's Victoria BeeBee who toured with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. We also talk about the three troubadours while Marv picks two songs from each to remind us why Judy, Joan, and Buffy are legendary and worthy of re-discovery. Do you want to be a Featured Artist on Derringer Discoveries? You'll need 10,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify. But if you want to be a Special Guest, like Marv Conan, all you need is a bucket of enthusiasm and a love for Derringer Discoveries (yep, you need to be a subscriber - it's free - and a regular listener!). This week on the show, Sara J. sits down with RoughGauge's April 2025 Featured Artist, Bill Hyland, for an honest, inspiring, and wide-ranging conversation that goes deep into the heart of music and creativity.Bill opens up about his first guitar god and the surprising instrument that kickstarted his musical journey — the accordion. From there, we follow his path through early influences, humbling experiences that challenged him to grow, and the transformative power of staying open to always learning more.We explore his evolution into improvisational music, how inspirations shift over time, and the emotional and mental connection Bill has with the guitar — diving into how frequencies, energy, and live performance create moments of real connection between artist and audience. The conversation takes a thoughtful turn into the role of AI in music and art — how it can be used as a tool without overstepping creative boundaries. Of course, we also nerd out on gear (including the Jake Blade), Bill walks me through his various musical projects and more! This episode is packed with stories, insight, and creative energy you won't want to miss.Tune in, turn up, and get inspired.Where you can find this week's guest:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/billhylandguitar/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bill.hyland.7You can read his Q&A mentioned in this episode and more here: https://www.roughgaugellc.com/featured-artistsBill's Various Musical Projects:https://www.instagram.com/squirrel_gravy_music/https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063561757440https://www.instagram.com/thescurryband/https://www.facebook.com/thescurrybandhttps://www.instagram.com/objectbandmt/https://www.facebook.com/objectbandmthttps://www.instagram.com/kaileymarie.mt/https://www.facebook.com/kayli.smith.351https://www.youtube.com/@KaileyMarieMusichttps://www.instagram.com/funk.e.moto/https://www.instagram.com/ravenroshi/https://www.facebook.com/ravenroshihttps://www.instagram.com/jazz_cabbage_bzn/https://www.facebook.com/JazzCabbageBZNWould you or someone you know like to be a RoughGauge Featured Artist? Experience Quetsmo's “The Roosevelt Mural,” curated and produced by Empire Seven Studios, on the south-facing wall of the new Roosevelt Park Apartments on the corner of East Santa Clara Street and North 21st Street. Shane Martin Oseguera, also known as Quetsmo, is a muralist from Redwood City, California, currently based in San Diego. His moniker combines Quet, a reference to Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec god of creativity, with SMO, his initials. Quetsmo remembers getting the call about “The Roosevelt Mural” from Empire Seven Studios–“As soon as [Carlos] introduced this opportunity to me, I told him, Man, this has been a dream of mine. I have been waiting for this call for years, and hands down, I'm all in. I've been putting 110% 24/7 on this thing.” Quetsmo spent a couple of months preparing the design and two months on the wall itself. The mural is over 100 feet wide, spans 77 feet vertically at its tallest point, and is 20 feet high along the sides. Focusing on plants and animals native to California, Quetsmo hoped to capture the diversity of the state's landscape. The crown jewel, centered on the tallest portion of the wall, is a larger-than-life Elephant Cactus adorned with a single hawk and cactus blooms painted in pearlescent white. It can be seen from East Santa Clara Street and symbolizes the strength of the community in one of San Jose's oldest neighborhoods. “Not only this community, but so many others like it, and the people within it have endured many hardships but continue to stay resilient. And that's exactly what this cactus represents.” -Shayne M. Oseguera. About the Development: The Roosevelt Park Apartments, a First Community Housing development, are designed for young adults experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, homeless families, large families, and, if possible, foster families and/or survivors of domestic abuse. The project's goal was to create a synergistic set of services and facilitate community building so that 80 families and transitional-age youth could remain in this rich and supportive neighborhood rather than being pushed out of Silicon Valley. Artist Statement: The composition transitions from the ocean to the west to the desert to the east. A unique quality we share all along the western coast, from Oregon down to Baja California and Mexico. The Santa Clara Valley mountain range stretches across the background, bringing a calming sense to the viewer. The foreground is a colorful reflection of the local biodiversity found within our community. People are seen interacting with the environment through activities they can engage in. The 1964 Impala lowrider in the bottom right-hand corner represents the surrounding area's dominant Hispanic and Latino demographic. A large Elephant Cactus stands tall as the main focal point. Personifying the resilience of all demographics who have endured countless hardships yet continue to adapt and survive despite the odds against them.
