My guest in this episode is Patrick Ferguson, a professional musician who has played drums for Vic Chesnutt, Mike Mills (REM), Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones), the Psychedelic Furs, Athens GA’s Five Eight, Pinky Doodle Poodle from Tokyo, Japan, and a hundred other bands. Patrick's podcast, Crash and Ride, is a long-form interview show where he talks to musicians who have survived anxiety, depression, addiction, trauma, and any other form of mental illness or mental distress. He began his podcast in March of 2019 and has published weekly since then, with a brief break when he lost his mind during the first month or so of the Covid-19 crisis. He is based out of Athens, GA, and constantly on tour when not dealing with a pandemic. In this episode he shares his story and how he helps other musicians through his podcast. I want to let you know ahead of time the audio cuts in and out at times but my editor Laura did a great job of engineering this episode. Hosted by Spencer Sims, this week QCR gives up an intimate performance from a band playing at Charlotte's Snug Harbor in June, 2019, recorded at the Advent CoWorking podcast studio in Plaza Midwood. Pinky Doodle Poodle, the high energy rock band from Tokyo, Japan is touring the US and playing can't-miss shows in Charlotte every Wednesday in June.
While I was on tour with Pinky Doodle Poodle two weeks ago, I was able to sit down with my good friend Evan Rowe. Evan has survived PTSD, depression, anxiety, electro-convulsive therapy, and multiple inpatient stays. Evan and I share a lot of common history and this one hit me right in the heart. Evan and I talk about finding something that finally worked to quell his worst impulses and how grateful we both are to have found bandmates and partners in life who will stick by us through the worst of it. Here is Evan's band Maple Stave: https://maplestave.bandcamp.com/ Here is J Kutchma's bandcamp page: https://jkutchma.bandcamp.com/ Here is Dr Nadine Burke Harris' talk about Adverse Childhood Experiences: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95ovIJ3dsNk
Running a record label that brings Japanese rock music to the US is not easy. But if anyone can do it, it’s Robby Takac, the bassist for the Goo Goo Dolls. He knows the ins-and-outs of the music industry pretty well; his band has double and triple platinum records and a globetrotting tour schedule. We talked to Robby about his record label, Good Charamel, which produces albums for Japanese bands like Pinky Doodle Poodle, the MOLICE, and Osaka-based punk rock institution Shonen Knife. He reveals why it’s super difficult to get Japanese music acts to perform in the US (and why you should ABSOLUTELY go see a Japanese band if it’s playing in your area). We had a lot of fun talking with Robby, so listen to the full episode for more. --- For more sweet sounds from Good Charamel and other things Robby’s involved with, check out: - https://www.goodcharamel.com/ - http://www.gcraudio.com/ - https://www.musicisart.org/ - http://www.googoodolls.com/ And listen to some music from the bands on Good Charamel Records, while you're at it: - Shonen Knife: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9hvuCsF2-s - Pinky Doodle Poodle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuhR1ETlSnE - The MOLICE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFWwmLkINUc - DJ Sashimi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8fxOM8G7K0
