We also go around the country for Week 13 Pick'em and talk through the playoff picture, tiebreakers, and who Georgia fans should quietly be rooting for. Then we bring back a Row Sixty classic: The Game of the Week, featuring Chadron State vs Pittsburg State, complete with mascot analysis, school history, and score predictions. This week we experienced one of the best atmospheres Sanford Stadium has produced in years and broke down Georgia's 35–10 win over the Texas Longhorns that proved just how far this team has come. The night felt special from start to finish—elite defense, a disciplined offensive attack, physicality at every position, and that perfectly executed onside kick that blew the roof off the place. We walked away more convinced than ever that this group is built for November and built for the playoff gauntlet ahead. We hit the high points on Gunner Stockton's growth, the trenches rising to the challenge, the maturity of the defense, and how Kirby's culture keeps showing up in the biggest moments. Welcome to AthCastMusic: The Music of Athens, GA Now and Then. I'm Marlene Sokol Stewart, and this is my Podcast.I've been M.I.A. in Athens lately due to my very big remodeling project at my house. Whew, it's kind of sucked the life out of me. My husband and I are freaking exhausted. But we got a lot done the last few days and the light is getting brighter. There will be a lot of good things that come out of this project. If we live through it! I'll be talking about it every now and then on the show as it will eventually be fun to talk bout it rather than bitch about it all of the time! But speaking of talking, my guests today are. Aaron White and Bennett Evans of SUPERSTAR, formerly the band A.D. Blanco. These guys started playing together when they were still in middle school, hitting iconic Athens spots like the Caledonia and 40 Watt before they were even old enough to drive. They've built their sound from the huge support of the Athens Community of mentors, role models, and other young musicians all learning from each other. Along with places like NUCI SPACE, where musicians could get together to jam, write, record, practice as so much more.Aaron White and Bennett Evans are now turning the page with the name change SUPERSTAR, and the new song " All Mine," I spoke with Aaron and Evan about these changes as well as some of the things that led up to this rebirth of their band.. We also talked about how they are creating and exploring new ways to express their musical personality. This is me talking to Aaron and BennettAthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and ThenSEASON: 5 EPISODE: 43LENGTH: 40:30PUBLISHED: November 13, 2025DEDICATED TO PUBLISH BI-MONTHLY ON THURSDAY'S EXCEPT DURING HOLIDAYS AND UNFORESEEABLE SITUATIONS.ENGINEER: KAYLA DOVERINTERN: RAYA ACKLEHRECORDED AT TWEED RECORDING AUDIO PRODUCTION SCHOOLhttps://tweedrecording.comProduced by: MARLENE SOKOL STEWARTContact for ATHCASTMUSIC:Email: marlene@athcastmusic.comInstagram: AthCastMusicYouTube: AthCastMusic (@MarleneSokolStewart-12)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?...Contact for SUPERSTAR:IG @SUPERSTARLOVESYOUFB MUSIC BY SUPERSTARTHANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING TO AND WATCHING ATHCASTMUSIC! We're back in the studio after our trip to the Georgia Florida game, and it's time to turn the page to Mississippi State. Georgia heads west looking for win No. 900 and a fifth straight victory in Starkville, but this one has all the makings of a classic trap game sandwiched between Florida and Texas. We dive into why this matchup is trickier than it looks, break down how Mike Bobo's offense can exploit State's defense, and explain why Jeff Lebby's air raid could test Georgia's secondary. Plus, we revisit the 2017 game, debate Georgia's blue-blood status, and pick Week 11's biggest college football games. The Dawgs are and hunting for another statement win before Texas rolls into Athens. We hope you enjoy this episode, and as always GO DAWGS! In this September 2025 episode, Associate Director Sarah Wasch interviews David Meyers, Director, and Lori Tiller, Director of Research & Evaluation, of Embark Georgia. Together, they share their professional journeys that led them to the University of Georgia where they now lead a statewide initiative aiming to increase college access and retention for youth who have experienced foster care or homelessness. David and Lori discuss the critical “handoff gap” that impacts student success when they transition from K-12 education to higher education, often without resources and support. Finally, they remind professionals that everyone can make an impact by finding collaborators, starting small, and listening to individuals with lived experience.

Andrea DeMarcus, a classically trained bassist and Juilliard grad. She returned to Georgia to do some self- help searching, being unsure and questioning her songwriting. So she left NY to head back to the place she felt would be best to take this reflection. Dave Kirslis, a self-taught guitarist riding freight trains in search of inspiration, met Andrea by chance. Though their first impression was awkward, they discovered not only a shared vision for music, but life together and soon married. They formed Cicada Rhythm, blending folk, rock, and Americana with harmonies and instrumentation that reflected their unique partnership. In 2011, they put out their first 4 song CD, “Fate in a Jar,” that was basically used for demo purposes. It began a procession of recording. In 2015, Drew Vandenberg (Drive-By Truckers, Of Montreal and Kishi Bashi) recorded two tracks “Do Not Destroy” and “Wait Til Morning.” Titled Two Wings - Live from Mt Zion Church, an historical 200 – year church in Sparta, GA. They released a self -titled album In October of 2015 that brought us a great collaboration with many musicians and songs that could fill your heart and soul. With “Everywhere I go,” released in April of 2018 Andrea and Dave brought us the unique menu of songs recorded in different studios, houses and any other place they laid down their instruments down as they toured and traveled. Their latest album, “Magic State” released in May of 2025, brought us a bit more mysticism with lyrics that might let you in to some of their struggles and some of their victories. It is yet another beautiful light of music from Andrea and Dave. Here is me with Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis. AthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and ThenSEASON: 4. It's the long-awaited episode with Chasing Heroin host Jeanine Coulter, recorded live at Jeremy's house during Dopeywood!Janine tells the full, raw, and very dopey story of her descent into addiction: from being a straight-A Supreme Court hopeful, to getting obsessed with exercise and binge eating, to discovering coke in a redneck bar in Georgia, all the way to living in an abandoned cell phone store in Oceanside, California smoking heroin off foil.Janine talks about doing meth that was pink, accidentally getting strung out at 30, and finding herself in a cinderblock junkie jungle gym run by tweakers. She reflects on her arrest record, her failed attempts at controlled drinking, and how it all somehow led to a decade of recovery, a podcast, and a damn TED Talk on post-traumatic growth.PLUS: a touching email from a listener who outran the cops with a trunk full of weed and somehow lived to tell the tale. A beautiful PCP voicemail and much much more on a brand new epiksode of that good ol Dopey Show!Don't forget: DopeyCon 6 tickets are out on Patreon. Leave a review. Send a voicemail. Today's episode dives into the dreamy, defiant, and deeply emotional world of Hotel Fiction — a band born from a college friendship and a fearless approach to making music that hits you right in the heart. From writing together almost immediately to dropping a debut album before most bands even book their first tour, Jade and Jess built something special — a space where genre doesn't matter as much as the creation of honest and sometimes brutal lyrics that makes one look into their own self. You might know them from songs like Astronaut Kids, Daydrifter, or the hauntingly beautiful Margo, a song that manages to say everything you didn't know you needed to hear.We talked about what it's like to grow up — not just as artists, but as people — while chasing your dreams on the road, missing home, writing in vans, (and sometimes even naming those vans), and leaning on each other through it all. We'll also get into the power of independence, how Athens shaped their spirit, and yes — what it's like to film a music video in Bill Berry's backyard. This episode is for anyone who ever loved too hard, felt too much, or wondered what might happen if you said you could, so you did! This is my conversation with Hotel Fiction's Jade Long and Jessica Thompson AthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and ThenSEASON: 4 EPISODE: 41LENGTH: PUBLISHED: July 10, 2025UPDATED WEEKLY ON THURSDAYENGINEER: KAYLA DOVERRECORDED AT TWEED RECORDING AUDIO PRODUCTION SCHOOLhttps://tweedrecording.com (https://tweedrecording.com/) (https://tweedrecording.com/)Produced by The Lightroom-AthPhotos and Camera: Ellison Suhoza & Lucca FagundesExecutive Producers: Guillermo Zouain and Wendy MuñizCONTACT FOR ATHCASTMUSIC:mailto:marlene@athcastmusic.comInstagram: AthCastMusicYouTube: AthCastMusic (@MarleneSokolStewart-12)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550294283019Hotel Fiction:IG: hotelfictionCan message them on their Instagram account. If you haven't heard of my next guest, like me, you are in for a wonderful treat, like me!Toni Hunlo came into my life just a short few weeks ago, when my team suggested I have him on. Who is him, I asked?? Well, once I started listening and reading about Toni, I certainly found out. Toni Hunlo is like no other Athens singer I've heard. You can't say a specific genre, but you can say everything that comes out of his mouth when he sings, performs in spoken word and the lyrics that are some the most thoughtful, genuine, and authentic lovely and sophisticated. In my opinion of course.I just met him, but I fell in love with him at first listen with his own band or with Lighthearted. Athens has already begun to do the same. I beg you to go listen to him at a venue that will allow you to capture and take in the essence of Toni Hunlo. This is me talking to Toni Hunlo.AthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and ThenSEASON: 4 EPISODE: 40LENGTH: 46:58PUBLISHED: June 26, 2025UPDATED WEEKLY ON THURSDAYENGINEER: KAYLA DOVERRECORDED AT TWEED RECORDING AUDIO PRODUCTION SCHOOLhttps://tweedrecording.com (https://tweedrecording.com/)Produced by The Lightroom-AthPhotos and Camera: Ellison Suhoza & Lucca FagundesExecutive Producers: Guillermo Zouain and Wendy MuñizCONTACT FOR ATHCASTMUSIC:mailto:marlene@athcastmusic.comInstagram: AthCastMusicYouTube: AthCastMusic (@MarleneSokolStewart-12)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550294283019TONI HUNLO INFOEmail: tonihunl0@gmail.com (the o is a 0 (zero)THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING TO AND WATCHING ATHCASTMUSIC! Welcome to AthCastMusic: The Music of Athens Ga Now and Then. I'm your host Marlene Sokol Stewart.Today's episode is about one man, one mic, and one very questionable leap from the 40 Watt stage. We're talking about Cole Taylor, former tour manager for the Drive-By Truckers, lifelong wrestling fanatic, and the mastermind behind Classic City Wrestling — the wildest mashup of rock and wrestling the South has ever seen.Cole took his love of suplexes and soundchecks and created a full-blown spectacle where you can catch live bands between body slams. It's like if Monday Night Raw and a dive bar had a beautiful, chaotic baby — and yes, it all happens right here in Athens. He'll tell us how it started, how it's going, and how he somehow turned a blown-out knee into a rallying cry for an entire community. Hint: it involves duct tape, a lot of heart, and probably some ibuprofen. We also had a surprise guest on zoom from the WWF, WWE, and WCW days. Watch on my YouTube channel! So, if you've ever wanted to see a luchador salsa-shuffle across a stage while a band rips a twangy solo overhead — yeah, this one's for you. Let's get into it.AthCastMusic (©): The Music of Athens Georgia, Now and ThenSEASON: 4 EPISODE 38LENGTH: 1:16PUBLISHED: June 19, 2025UPDATED WEEKLY ON THURSDAYENGINEER: KAYLA DOVERRECORDED AT TWEED RECORDING AUDIO PRODUCTION SCHOOLhttps://tweedrecording.com (https://tweedrecording.com/)Produced by The Lightroom-AthPhotos and Camera: Ellison Suhoza & Lucca FagundesExecutive Producers: Guillermo Zouain and Wendy MuñizCONTACT FOR ATHCASTMUSIC:mailto:marlene@athcastmusic.comInstagram: AthCastMusicYouTube: AthCastMusic (@MarleneSokolStewart-12)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550294283019CONTACT FOR COLE TAYLOR:email: classiccitywrestling706@gmail.comIG @tcoletaylorFB: bit.ly/3FX2QE6THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LISTENING TO AND WATCHING ATHCASTMUSIC! My next guests are Dana Downs and Michelle Roche. Yep, we get 2 mints in one on this next episode. Dana hails from Louisiana but was pretty much an Army Brat and came to Athens from Columbus, GA .Michelle is from the Atlanta Area. They both have been here in Athens since the “Big Bang!” Dana as a musician and beautiful singer, while Michelle was always taking care of business. Some of the bands Michelle worked with were, Five-Eight, Of Montreal, Vigilantes of Love, Pylon Reenactment, The Glands, Randall Bramblett, and Widespread Panic. She has also been part of AthFest for about 6 years now. You can still see Dana playing around town with anyone who asks her! As two major entities of the Athens music scene, they both showed how well they fit into the Music of Athens GA then and now! It made me so happy to talk with them both. I think you'll concur.
THERE PROBABLY ISN'T ANY MUSIC AFICIONADO THAT DOESN'T KNOW R.E.M. AND HOW BERTIS DOWNS BECAME THE MANAGER, LAWYER. AND PROTECTOR OF R.E.M. BERTIS DOWNS CAME TO ATHENS GA AFTER ATTENDING DAVIDSON COLLEGE IN NC, STUDYING AND DOING SOME DJ SHIFTS AT THEIR INFAMOUS RADIO STATION, WFAE. HE ATTENDED LAW SCHOOL AT UGA. BERTIS TRAVELED ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH R.E.M. , TAKING AWAY THE BUSINESS SIDE OF THE TREACHEROUS AND SOMETIMES SLEAZY SIDE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. AS AN ENTERTAINMENT LAWYER, DOWNS MADE SURE ALL OF THEIR WISHES AND DECISIONS THAT THEY FELT WERE BEST FOR THE BAND WERE CARRIED OUT. BERTIS WROTE A SERIES OF “POSTCARDS FROM …” WHICHEVER CITY THEY WERE PLAYING AND DOCUMENTING SO MANY MAGICAL MOMENTS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE HISTORY OF THIS ICONIC BAND. If wishes were trees the trees would be fallingListen to reasonSeason is callingA group of beligerant, experimental, avant-garde bohemians from Athens Georgia seem an unlikely group to defy the odds and hit four consecutive multi-platinum records, but that's exactly what R.E.M. did between 1988 and 1994 with their smash albums Green, Out of Time, Automatic for the People, and Monster. We're heading into slightly different territory from anything we've covered to this point as we discuss the merits of having a singularly distinctive vocalist and three musicians who simply don't want to confirm to any standard of what music should sound like. But will Kev's ratings line up with his nostalgic fondness for these four records and will Corey's patience be tested by the less mainstream directions that these four gents take? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and stand in the place where you live!Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashTwitter: https://twitter.com/UCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/mz9ymTwSSE Hosted on Acast. John Keane is a veteran producer, engineer, and musician who has been involved in the creation of many gold and multi-platinum records. He is best known for his work with R.E.M, Widespread Panic, The Indigo Girls, Robert Earl Keen, and too many more to list. He started John Keane Studios in Athens, Georgia in 1981. John became an expert on subjects such as record production, home recording, and Pro Tools. Not only did John teach a Pro Tools course for the University of Georgia's Music Business Program, but he is also the author of the popular Pro Tools book, The Musician's Guide to Pro Tools (McGraw-Hill). He has also created Online Pro Tools, a series of Pro Tools instructional videos.John was so well known for his studio work here in Athens, many of the artist he worked with would bring other musicians to record with John as well. David Barbee well known for his studio work in Athens as well, actually learned in Keane's studio. The tales that come out of those studios during the late 70's and 80's continue to flow through the music community as cherished memories still today. John still continues with the “newbies” coming out of Athens today with the same vigor as those days. He continues to strive to keep them relevant to the times but still keeping the “Athens Vibe” alive. My conversation with John was one for the top shelf on my Podcast, AthCastMusic and one that will have a special place in my memories. Trepid is a band that was only born ten months ago. Members May May Bryant (vocalist), Turner Chastain (rhythm guitar), J. Ben Turk (lead guitar), John Bellerjeau (bass), and Ethan Houseman (drums) talk about how a magical meeting brought them together — and why they knew Athens was the right place to shape their own sound and technique within the 80s and 90s shoegaze genre. With bands like My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and The Mary Chain, Slowdive, and Catherine Wheel laying the foundation, Trepid took what they could from those influences and left the rest behind, replacing it with their own multi-layered, melodic, and boisterous vocals that push through the instrumental side of their message.I was surprised — and honestly impressed — when I talked with these young musicians. Take a hard listen to May May, Turner, and J. Ben. They'll let you in, if you do.Thank you for listening to AthCastMusic.
