En este quinto episodio de El Cancionero de Kurt, conducido por Albina Cabrera, exploramos la evolución del punk a través de cuatro álbumes icónicos que influyeron profundamente a Kurt Cobain. What the Riff!?! delves once again into the great (and not so great) Christmas songs to add a little cheer as you rock around the Christmas tree this year.“Carol of the Bells” by Mannheim SteamrollerMannheim Steamroller covers a Ukrainian carol from 1922. They highlight a 3 against 2 polyrhythm that is present in the original song, and add a major key change that is not present in the original. This is off their second Christmas album released in 1988 entitled "A Fresh Aire Christmas." “O Come O Come Emanuel” by Bad ReligionThis fast-paced rendition takes an 8th century song and puts a punk twist to it. It is a quick song, like most bad Religion tracks. “Yellin' at the Xmas Tree” by Billy IdolRocker Billy Idol reminisces about times with his drunk father yelling at the Christmas tree. "Oh the Christmas bells are ringing and the carolers are singing, but Daddy, he don't hear 'em, he's yellin' at the Christmas tree."“Space Christmas” by Shonen KnifeThis Japanese punk-pop band was inspired by the girl groups of the 60's and the Ramones. This sci-fi Christmas track has a "bubblegum pop" sound with a punk edge. “Taking Care of Christmas” by Bachman Turner OverdriveWhen Rob covered "Bachman Turner Overdrive II" earlier this year we discovered this Christmas remake of their classic single. It is surprisingly catchy for a song overhauled for Christmas. Randy Bachman did an all-Christmas album in 2008 including this song.“Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersThis original song was penned by Tom Petty on a ukulele in 1992. It was used in the motion picture "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," and also appeared in "Jingle All the Way." Jeff Lynne co-produced the song, played bells, bass, timpani, sang background vocals, and wishes for a Chuck Berry Songbook in the song.“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by the REO SpeedwagonREO Speedwagon keeps the original feel of the carol in their rendition of this classic. It was released on their 2009 album, "Not So Silent Night...Christmas with REO Speedwagon." The original English carol dates back to the 1650's. “Santa Claus” by The SonicsThis song with a fuzzy guitar appeared on the debut album from The Sonics back in 1965. The Sonics were a garage band out of Tacoma, Washington in the 60's, and influenced the punk and grunge movement. They are likely best known for their party song, "Louie, Louie."“Santa's Messin' with the Kid” by Eddie C. CampbellBlues guitarist and singer Eddie C. Campbell was well known in the Chicago blues scene and learned guitar from Muddy Waters. This song was released on his 1977 Christmas album.“What Christmas Means to Me” by Stevie WonderThis original song was released on Tamla records in 1967 on Wonder's eighth studio album entitled "Someday at Christmas." It was the final track on the album which consisted of a mix of Christmas standards and original music. “Merry Christmas Darling” by the CarpentersNo Christmas playlist would be complete without Karen Carpenter's voice. This song was originally recorded by The Carpenters in 1970. The lyrics date back to 1946 when songwriter Frank Pooler wrote it about a love interest at the time. He had The Carpenters perform it when they were his music students at California State University, Long Beach.“White Christmas” by Bing CrosbyBing Crosby originally performed this song composed by Irving Berlin in 1940. It was performed for the first time in December 1941, and appeared in the motion picture "Holiday Inn" in 1942. (and there might be a bonus song...)We at What the Riff?!? wish every one a blessed and Merry Christmas!

This episode is bigger than bubblegum! We chew on Tommy Roe's 1966 hit, "Sweet Pea" and we find it both delicious and diatonic (2:19). It has that wicked drum break, but the jangly guitar and bright organ also make the song POP! The second stick comes from Mexico's great girl garagers, Las Chic's (40:16). This is one of them refritos which we talked about long ago ... they make a cute song even cuter, and Weldon thinks they sound a bit like Shonen Knife or Trixie's Big Red Motorbike. Manfred Mann literally turn the song into a jazzy jingle for candy in 1967 (1:00:08). Don't get into the van with this band, kiddos, you'll know when you hear Klaus Voorman deliver the "lyrics" to the song!! Do bubblegum music and acid mix? You bet it does, when Friar Tuck & his Psychedelic Guitar gets his sticky hands on Tommy's tune (1:15:47). This song is, in effect, Mike Deasy "playing with himself," since he was the guitar player on the original, and he overdubs some wild wailing on it. We empty the pack with a track from the Golden Year of 1989 - lots of hip-hop heads sampled the famous drum break, but DJ Chuck Chillout and Kool Chip's "I'm Large" added the iconic Vic Flick "James Bond" riff to boost the boom-box bravado (1:36:43) ! Come on and dance with us!!!!

Margit Detweiler is the epitome of cool. A survivor of ovarian cancer, she embraced her post-chemo white hair, styled it into a punk pixie, and sealed it with a bold lip. But her coolness goes far deeper than her outward style. Margit is the founder of TueNight, a platform dedicated to amplifying the stories of Gen-X women, and president of Gyrate Media, an award-winning content strategy and editorial development firm. This three-time Webby honoree gave us her honest opinion on the term "Grandfluencers", offered reccomendations for what music we should be listening to right now, and helped us debate the true meaning of "wet leg". Most importantly, she inspired us with a term she learned from Gina Pell: we will heretofore be known as Perennials, because we are always blooming. The second part of this month’s new release series sees no drop off from last week’s extravaganza. In fact, it makes the case that 2023 is shaping up to be yet another great year of music. There are long-awaited returns by The Reverend Horton Heat, Chickasaw Mud Puppies, Cheater Slicks, and Shonen Knife. There are great new bands such as Civic, Strange Neighbors, and The Circulators. There’s some punk. There’s some power pop. There’s some indie rock. Yep, just like normal. This week’s entry for the 52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks series is a version that was released in 2022. The Knee-Hi’s are a great Chicago based band whose album, Charmed, is described on their site as “a living love letter to rock ‘n’ roll, serving up a mixture of rock, punk, glam, power pop, garage and doo-wop”. Sounds like a Ledge band, right? Once again I’m pleading for anybody out there to send in their own versions. I want as many new covers as possible! All you have to do is record it and forward it to paulisded@gmail.com. For more information, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com
American pop culture is the best of all worlds. From Leonard Bernstein to Sidney Poitier, some of the brightest and most sophisticated visionaries the world has ever seen have called the good old US-of-A home. America is also where the corn dog, The Love Boat and John Waters have made their mark. Call it what you will - camp, lowbrow, junk culture - this is the everyday stuff that we love unabashedly. The bands and artists featured in this week's episode also unabashedly love "stuff", and love to sing about it. Our good friend Nikki Kreuzer is not only into high art, writing and photography, she's also into JUNK CULTURE, and especially bands that sing about it. Nikki joins to help count down the best in music that celebrate the uncultured and fun.Nikki is always up to cool stuff in LA. Today I will be talking to Lasse Lehtonen about his book The 14th Moon, which came out with Bloomsbury this year (2022). With me today is Dr. Brooke McCorkle, who wrote her own book on Japanese musicians Shonen Knife, a band who also feature in my own work on punk in Kyoto. The 14th Moon is the title of an album by the Japanese singer-song writer Yuming, who although not punk at all, shares much with and impacted in one form or another the musicians Brooke and I look at, especially, the female musicians among them. This should not come as a surprise, as Yuming (Matsutoya Yumi) is one of the most influential figures in Japanese popular music history. A singer-songwriter recognized globally for her songs used in Miyazaki Hayao's beloved animations, Yuming has captured the hearts of listeners of different generations since her debut in the early 1970s. Her fourth album, The 14th Moon, released in November 1976, was a milestone in establishing her signature style: the posh, “city” sound that later paved the way to the 1980s City Pop and 1990s J-pop, and even what Brooke calls Josei or women rock. In addition to examining the album's astonishing stylistic versatility and its complex background, Lasse explores how Yuming revolutionized the position of women in Japanese popular music. The 14th Moon teaches us much about the turbulent and transformative time of its recording and help us understanding the social changes in Japan of the 1970s, a usually under researched era in cultural history, after the stormy and radical era of the 1960s and just before the heyday of the consumerist bubble era of the 1980s. Nick is joined on CIC Live with music specialist Keith Cahoon.Keith Cahoon grew up in Northern California, and became a music fanatic at a young age. He began buying an immense number of albums, and regularly attended concerts at Winterland and other Bay Area venues. After stints in university and working as a carpenter, he joined Tower Records at age 22. While he first thought the job would be just for a few months, he ended up working for Tower Records for 25 years, 7 in America and 18 in Japan. He served as CEO of Tower Records Japan from late 1984, and was part of the management buyout when Tower Japan split from the parent company in 2002. While at Tower, the company grew from three stores to 62, including the largest record store in the world, in Tokyo's Shibuya district. In addition to Japan, under Keith's management Tower also opened stores in seven other Asian countries. Keith left Tower in 2003 and started a music publishing company, Hotwire. At Hotwire he worked with a wide range of music, introducing foreign artists to Japan, and Japanese artists to the worldwide market. Keith later joined Apple as Director of iTunes Japan. Tripp Nasty takes us deep into the strange and scary world of Denver's alt music scene. Tripp discusses his history as a computer programmer(??) and future physicist(???) before recently going for his masters in accounting(????) all while developing a deep appreciation of sound and Moog's synthesizers. He also talks about landing in jail for two days during the pandemic (?????) and a Denver industrial band that landed in jail themselves after a prolonged harassment campaign of Tripp and other local musicians that involved fake tours, tear gas, and home break-ins(?????????????). Because Tripp's connections in the underground run deep and Brandon and I already name drop so many bands that range in obscurity, I've included short clips interspersed and laid under as bed music throughout the episode for some additional context for people like Jennifer. The episode opens with Tripp Nasty's "Western Pride" and closes with "On a Snowy Afternoon," both off his recent album Making the Pythons Dance. Other clips in order of appearance include Shonen Knife, the Disco Biscuits, Echo Beds, William Basinski, Sun City Girls, Crash Worship, James Chance & the Contortions, Yonatan Gat and the Eastern Medicine Singers, Harry Pussy, Tripp Nasty's "Snowy Afternoon," the Forbidden Planet soundtrack, Delia Derbyshire, various modular synth clips from Tripp Nasty Sounds on Instagram, Ezra Buchla, and more from Tripp Nasty Sounds. I'm not gonna post song titles since I'm not trying to get us unlisted. You can find Tripp Nasty on his website, his bandcamp, and twitter. Jennifer C. Martin also has a new fiction piece up influenced by her new relationship. Give that a read at Olney Magazine.

Trump Vindication Day. The Mueller Investigation goes out with a whimper. The Deep State Coup is Over. And now it's Trump's Turn. Let The Reckoning Begin. Declassification and IG Horowitz Report Soon. We sample President Trump's airport declaration of "complete and total exoneration" and description of "an illegal takedown that failed." Preparing for the slingshot north in the polls. The heroic Devin Nunes reviews "the unraveling of the biggest political scandal in American history." Why Rod Rosenstein stuck around, backing up AG Barr. We outline the utter humiliation of MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, and flashback to laughable accusations of "treason" emanating from FBI McCabe, DNI Clapper and CIA Brennan. Clapper admits the White House is now spiking the ball in the end zone "with some justification," while Brennan seems to have gone mute. Comey's Lawfare crowd hides behind their "complexity" shield. We compare Russiagate with Iraq's WMD's. Some of the same people, same networks and same geographies involved in both hoaxes. McCain and Frum -- London, Rome and Prague. Leftist Matt Taibbi sketches "the death blow" to the reputation of the American media, who just handed Trump "the mother of campaign issues headed into 2020." Joe diGenova & Victoria Toensing review where we go from here. Time now for the RINO's to fight. On Top of the World. Wipe Out. Bringing It Home. With Listener Calls & Music via The Surfaris, Muse, Shonen Knife, the Alexandrov Ensemble, The Smiths and Jim Reeves. Sacred Song from George Jones. A Special Place In Hell. Peter Navarro, White House trade advisor, scorches Justin Trudeau for stabbing Trump "in the back" after the G-7 Summit. Major miscalculation for the "dishonest & weak" Canadian PM. Wilbur Ross, a.k.a. The Wilburine, makes big moves as America finally fires back in the decades-long trade wars. Meanwhile, George Soros admits he's been living in his "own bubble" and that everything "has gone wrong" in recent years. Italy elects immigration restrictionist Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte -- populist ally for Trump and source of additional concern for the cracking European Union. Also, Dennis Rodman heads to Singapore for North Korean negotiations, as MSM roots for Trump failure with Kim Jong Un. Notably, Trump's approvals have inched higher than Obama's and also Reagan's at the equivalent points in their presidencies. Plus, additional discussion on the Colorado Republican primary for Governor. With Listener Calls & Music via Shonen Knife, Social Distortion, Frank Sinatra and Eros Ramazzotti. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
President Trump lands in Singapore. Kim Jong Un arrives on Air Force Un. The Art of The Nuclear Deal with North Korea. History in the making? Rodman gets ready. Meanwhile, host relates his weekend visit with Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cakeshop, who received a standing ovation at the Western Conservative Summit. The Supreme Court has ruled 7-2 in Phillips' favor, marking a victory for religious liberty in America. We discuss the totalitarian governmental mindset that sought to "teach" Phillips a lesson, with reference to Mikhail Heller's book The Formation of Soviet Man. Lenin, Stalin and the attempts to "infantilize" the human spirit by coercion and propaganda. Also, we continue our narrative on the Criminal Deep State, operation Crossfire Boomerang. Senate Intel leaker James Wolfe is arrested, Ali Watkins of the New York Times reveals the House of Cards to be real. Did McCabe alter the Flynn 302s? Where's FBI Special Agent Pientka? Who is the shady Sergei Millian? Has Simona Mangiante flipped on Mifsud? Gowdy, Ryan, Priestap and OCONUS Lures. Plus, sad notes on Charles Krauthammer, Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade. With Listener Calls & Music via Portugal The Man, Shonen Knife and Bobby Darin. Sacred Song from Roy Acuff. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
