Forty years ago, Shelton founded Heroes Aren't Hard to Find, an independent comics shop, which is now located at 417 Pecan Avenue in Charlotte's Plaza-Midwood neighborhood. Although he was only in his twenties at the time, he already had extensive experience collecting comic books. His customers appreciated his expertise and enjoyed talking with a fellow comic book fan, and he soon developed a loyal customer base. Dharma Digs with Taylor Winchester - Accessing a Higher Plane via the Creative Arts
Born in Iceland, raised in the Carolinas - Jason Jet's personality and music both embody an indie-soul, DIY vibe, and the passion and purpose are etched throughout his works. In this week's Dharma Digs Episode, Jason and I dig into the role intentionality has played in both his creative endeavors as well as his personal life. We unpack some of the lyrics from his song Numb, along with how his music and songs have impacted those around him. While he's sitting on an unreleased album that was recorded at his home studio, his focus of late has been on building an innovative and accessible approach to recording / production offerings dubbed Grindhaus Studios, located in the Plaza Midwood area of Charlotte, NC. Describing it as the YMCA of recording studios, Grindhaus provides "a high-quality, professional space for artists to record, write, collaborate and relax." "We meet artists in the middle, where traditional studios are too expensive and the common home studio most times just isn't adequate enough. So you may be wondering how we do it. Well, we have decided to steal a couple of plays from the co-working space and create a membership experience for our space...by offering master classes, youth camps, major publishing opportunities and most importantly access to professionally treated studio environments at a fraction of the cost. We're here for the musicians that are seeking community and recording resources. " Our segment two quotes to ponder as you're tuning in are below: “Music, at its essence, is what gives us memories. And the longer a song has existed in our lives, the more memories we have of it." ~ Stevie Wonder Jason's segment three shares are: Communities in Schools - Working directly in 2,500 schools in 25 states and the District of Columbia, Communities In Schools builds relationships that empower students to stay in school and succeed in life. Our school-based staff partner with teachers to identify challenges students face in class or at home and coordinate with community partners to bring outside resources inside schools. From immediate needs like food or clothing to more complex ones like counseling or emotional support, we do whatever it takes to help students succeed. Welcome to another round of Date Night! In this episode we chat with Jeff Tonidandel and Jamie Brown, the husband-wife duo behind some of Charlotte's favorite restaurants. Jeff and Jamie co-own several of the NoDa neighborhood's favorite spots, including Haberdish, Crepe Cellar, Growlers Pourhouse and Reigning Doughnuts. Both are business-savvy, MBA-carrying entrepreneurs who had careers outside of the culinary industry before quitting and traveling internationally to figure out what they wanted to do when they grew up. Fortunately for the Queen City, they settled on becoming restaurateurs, and the rest is history. Jamie opened up about a health scare she experienced more than a year ago and how that helped shape an extremely regimented diet and approach to health and wellness. It's a new normal for the couple, and as they explained, provides for light-hearted moments when they get invited to food tastings and other culinary-related events and Jeff takes not only Jamie, but their chefs as well - a third wheel who will actually be able to eat. We chatted about their crazy lives, their three kids and an exciting new project of theirs coming to the Plaza Midwood neighborhood and much more. Hello, Biscuit Listeners and welcome to freshly baked, buttery and flaky edition of The Biscuit Podcast brought to you by Charlotte is Creative. I’m your freshly sunburnt host, Andy Goh. Today is May 1st, 2019. This past weekend was a big one for the city of Charlotte. Everywhere you turned, it seemed an exciting, creative or communal event was taking place. From Tuck Fest at the White Water Center to the Queen’s Cup Steeple Chase to Vintage Charlotte’s Spring Market, there was no shortage of ways to experience the Queen City at her finest. While we couldn’t be everywhere, we did spend some time at BOOM Festival and Open Streets 704 in Plaza Midwood. Along the way, we were able to talk to some of the faces in the crowd, including artists John Hariston Jr., and Andrea Downs, Charlotte cultural queen Davita Galloway and BOOM founder and Executive Director Manoj Kesevan. Each of them had lots to say about what seemed like an ideal day in the QC. Let’s take a listen... The Biscuit Podcast is produced by Tim Miner, Matt Olin and Andy Goh. Music by Harvey Cummings.

Journey with us to the early 1900s, where we discover some incredible firsts to our area that were born just down the street. So strap in for some local legends, a poor attempt at a Dwayne Johnson theory, and the chicken coop that took over the south. It's no secret that craft brews are a big business now -- and Plaza Midwood, NoDa, and South End are neighborhoods where you can find great local beers in Charlotte. And while breweries are part of a young, hip culture -- they're also a real estate phenomenon with WHERE they're locating, and how they're spurring growth around them in former low-rent, industrial areas. Brad Shell -- owner of Unknown Brewing in South End -- has done all this and he's our guest on Charlotte Real Estate Talk, with some great stories to tell.
Welcome to the #CharlotteIsCreative podcast. Today’s show features hosts Tim Miner and Matt Olin speaking with Sense of Doom, Seems Legit, Oy Vey Marie, Crashberry Jam and Dill With It of the Charlotte Roller Girls, immediately following the April 6 Creative Mornings Charlotte event at Park Ten lanes, where the Rollergirls spoke about the global theme of “Game.” The ladies of the Charlotte Rollergirls, as a group, delivered a fantastic talk during Creative Mornings, and then sat down with Matt and Tim immediately afterwards to record the podcast. They talked about what being on a team meant to them, what the sport of roller derby has taught them, how creativity impacts the game, and what Charlotte can learn from Roller Derby. Register for the next Creative Mornings Charlotte event Friday morning, May 4 at 8:30 a.m. at Resident Culture Brewing Company in Plaza Midwood. The featured speaker will be Charlotte artist and sculptor of the Captain Jack statue in Midtown, Chas Fagan, about the global theme of Committment. RSVPs will open at 9 a.m., Monday, April 30. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #CharlotteIsCreative, and tweet us @CM_CLT whenever you see Charlotteans showing their creativity.

This week I got on the mic with Kevin Giriunas, the founder of Advent Coworking in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte. I didn’t plan it this way, but this interview couldn’t have been a more perfect follow up to the episode with Court Creeden. Kevin spent the bulk of his life chasing a version of success that wasn’t his own, earning a Master’s Degree in structural engineering and working as an IT project manager for four years. On paper, Kevin was living the life of his dreams. But, like so many others, he wasn’t fulfilled. Instead of sticking it out and hoping for the best, Kevin decided to walk away from the career he built to do something that mattered to him. Kevin and his team have created an empowering community by blending art, technology, creativity, and positive energy to change the world for the better. You can listen to this episode above. After you listen, drop me a line and let me know how you liked it, then head on over to the iTunes Store and Subscribe, Rate, and Review the show. That’s how we keep spreading the word and bringing you even more killer content! Cheers! Learn more about Advent Podcast University

Ask a beer lover, and there are plenty of cities whose names can be synonymous with the drink they love. San Diego, Grand Rapids, Portland, Fort Collins ... Portland again. In North Carolina, Asheville has long held that designation, gaining local and national attention, but part of the fun of watching beer’s growth can be the creation and explosion of cultures in new places. In recent years, that’s been the case in Charlotte, North Carolina, about two hours away from Asheville and now home to about 20 breweries and a burgeoning beer scene. One person who’s had a unique perspective of seeing this happen is Alexa Long, head brewer at Legion Brewing, an almost two-year-old business in the city’s Plaza Midwood neighborhood. After graduating from UNC-Charlotte in 2011 and working locally at a homebrew store, Long went pro at Charlotte’s Heist Brewing before joining Legion in fall 2015 and being a part of the crew that earned Legion the title of “best new neighborhood brewery” by Charlotte magazine in 2016. Long’s connection to Charlotte provides her a unique perspective of how the city and its love of beer has changed, as drinkers have now come to expect more than just juicy IPA, even if that continues to be a bestseller for Legion and others. As Charlotte’s star continues to rise, Long has and continues to be a part of that.
