Poor Zak Starkey. First he was fired from The Who; then he was rehired by The Who. Now he's officially been "retired" from The Who. Jack details "the Zak Starkey saga" for Becky and Molly McAleer, and why Starkey isn't performing with his OTHER former band Oasis during their reunion tour. Elsewhere, Jack tells Becky and Molly about a bizarre story out of New York City. 2 wannabe socialites kept an ex-business partner captive in their townhome in order to extract the account information for his crypto fortune. Not only were the captors unsuccessful, but now they're facing some serious charges. Plus, according to folks in their circle, they just weren't fun to be around. Also discussed in this mammoth installment of Hardly Focused: Molly is performing 2 shows in Boston! See her June 25 at Laugh Boston, and June 26 at City Winery, alongside Rob Schulte and Meredith Lynch! Goo Goo Dolls' "Name" is about MTV VJ-turned-political commentator Lisa Kennedy, whom Becky was once told she looks like. When celebrities get cancelled, is it a matter of "waiting for the other shoe to drop?" Hailey "Hawk Tuah" Welch finally talks about her meme coin scandal on her Talk Tuah podcast. Interview by Angela CroudaceNick Thomas, frontman of The Spill Canvas, is bringing something special to Australian fans this year — a long-awaited celebration of their beloved 2005 album One Fell Swoop. Speaking ahead of their debut tour Down Under, Thomas shared his excitement and gratitude for being able to continue making music nearly two decades on.“To get to do this for even a year, let alone over 20, is a marvel in and of itself,” he said. “We've never been to Australia, so to come over now and play this album in full feels really special.”The tour, a co-headlining run with fellow emo pioneers The Juliana Theory, marks a major milestone for both bands. Thomas credits Emotion Is Dead as a formative influence in his own musical journey, and says he's thrilled to share the stage with artists he once idolised. “I grew up listening to them — now we're friends. It's wild.”The Spill Canvas will perform One Fell Swoop front to back, staying true to its original sequencing. “We spent a lot of time curating the track list as a journey,” Thomas explained. “It just feels right to honour it that way.” After the final track, Self-Conclusion, Thomas plans to segue into a few more fan favourites to round out the night.Despite never visiting Australia before, Thomas is embracing the adventure with enthusiasm. “I'd love to see the Opera House, meet people, maybe spot a kangaroo. I'm also — embarrassingly — a big fan of Below Deck Down Under. Captain Jason is my hero!”Reflecting on the recording of One Fell Swoop, Thomas recalled humble beginnings at Black Lodge Studios in Kansas with producer Ed Rose. “It was our first real studio experience. I remember Ryan Pope from The Get Up Kids giving me a shoulder rub while I was recording guitar. I tried to play it cool, but I was freaking out.”Over the years, The Spill Canvas has toured with major acts like the Goo Goo Dolls and OneRepublic. Thomas fondly recalled an evening where Ryan Tedder listened to his demos and gave thoughtful feedback. “Moments like that are unforgettable. It's what makes this lifestyle feel like a shared journey.”After all these years, Thomas remains a passionate music fan, recently inspired by artists like Medium Build and Bilmuri (not the actor). “Always be a fan,” he said. “That's what keeps it exciting.”Check out the full interview for more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two old friends who've contributed more than their fair share to the emo world and beyond and lived to tell the tale: Evan Weiss and Chris Carrabba. Carrabba is of course the main creative force behind Dashboard Confessional, whose early albums—specifically The Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most—basically invented the genre's confessional acoustic-based era. He could've made those records a dozen times over the past 20 years, but instead Carrabba filled out Dashboard's sound over the years, stretching out where the muse took him. Now an elder statesman, Carrabba returned to that simpler sound but brought years of wisdom with him for 2022's All the Truth That I Can Tell, which he talks about in this great chat. Dashboard will head out on a long summer tour with Goo Goo Dolls starting July 13, but not before playing a show with Weiss's band in Vegas the day before. Weiss's band would be Pet Symmetry, a trio he's been part of for the past decade or so, and which just released an excellent new album: Big Symmetry is a big, loveable, tuneful set of songs that all start with the word “big.” It's a joyful blast of pop-punk that feels like a deliberate antidote to tough times. It may also be a bit of a reaction to what fans would consider Weiss's main band, Into It. Over It., which flies that emo flag a bit higher. But whatever, those tags are pretty silly when we ought to be talking about songs. Speaking of, check out the song “Big Wish” from the album Big Symmetry right here. In this wide-ranging chat, Carrabba and Weiss talk about the holiness of punk community, the accidental origins of Dashboard Confessional plus that band's long hiatus and rebirth, and how the financial collapse of 2008 had opposite effects on their careers. It's true! Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Chris Carrabba and Evan Weiss for chatting. In this episode, we're joined by Peter Cortner—renowned for his iconic role as the frontman of the legendary punk band Dag Nasty. Of course we hit on the "Wig Out At Denkos" and "Field Day" albums. We also talk about Cortner's really cool new band, Applied Knowledge, who release their debut album in May.“Easily the equal of the Replacements at their best -- and as much a forebear of the Goo Goo Dolls' eventual success as a Minneapolis quartet -- Field Day is just that for the group. Peter Cortner's singing in a mere year's time has moved from the edgy, high-pitched rasp of Wig Out to include a ruminative, gently expressing tone, with more vocal control and a sweet edge than one will find in most of the band's peers. As for his lyrics, besides the analysis of personal interaction that defined earlier Dag Nasty material, Cortner addresses everything from being in a band and wanting to write "songs, powerful songs" to reflections on death, loss, and separation”. -All Music MusicApplied Knowledge "Earthlink"Music ClipsApplied Knowledge "Not Too Far"The Charms "So Pretty"The Dogmatics "I Love Rock N Roll"Produced and Hosted by Steev Riccardo

Hey there, music lovers. Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives. I'm your host, Jeff Miers. Today on the podcast, I'm excited to welcome two members of Letter To Elise, a young indie band that has already left a mark on the Western New York music scene, and is poised to take its soaring, anthemic sound out into the broader world. Vocalist, songwriter and band founder Elliott Hunt and keyboardist/vocalist Chris Lillis bring an edgy urgency to their emotional, grandiose take on modern indie pop and alternative rock. Their sound is at once familiar and fresh, and offers a unique take on indie tropes and the sort of pop hooks that helped to build the careers of artists like The Killers, Cage the Elephant and Catfish and the Bottle Men. And Hunt's emotionally intelligent lyrics and indelible vocal melodies reveal the influence of heritage artist like U2 and Bruce Springsteen. During our chat, Elliott and Chris discuss their earliest musical epiphanies, their diverse musical influences, their recent joint cover of the Killers' ‘Mr. Brightside' with Goo Goo Dolls co-founder Robby Takac and members of the Bills Mafia, and their soon-to-be-released new EP, the result of a new and exciting partnership with producer Lennon Leppert. 2024 has been quite a year.I spent most of the year as a nomad, traveling throughout the Southeast United States moving from town to town, housesitting for a lot of awesome cats (and a few awesome dogs). It was an amazing adventure that led me to see lots of new places, meet people in real life I'd only known online, and discover a few things about myself along the journey. But as I moved around, I lived with uncertainty. Tonight I would be in this one house, but where would I be tomorrow night? Would I have a place to go the next night after my current gig ended? When would I find out? Not only that, but this past summer my dad passed away. I was fortunate to be able to spend the last week of his life with him in Florida, however it also served as a reminder of how things change, how things come and go, and how important it is to cherish and savor what we have now.As we wrap up the year, I find myself settled down in a new apartment in Charlotte, North Carolina, determined to begin a new and different kind of adventure. As I traveled around the country in 2024, one of the things I missed out on was a sense of community. In 2025, we're changing that. Now, as your 2024 comes to an end and you look forward to the new year, give yourself the gift of tuning into this episode and discovering the takeaways that may serve your journey as you move to the next chapter in your life. And as you do so, take a moment and ask yourself these questions:✅ What is your theme word for 2025? (Mine are "community" and "transformation".)✅ What are some things that you want to do and bring into 2025 in your life? ✅ Conversely, what are you leaving behind? What is no longer serving you that you do not need to drag into 2025 with you?✅ What are your intentions for this coming year? ✅ What are you building for yourself? ✅ What would you ideally like your life to look like?✅ What are you committing to doing or not doing to get there?✅ What do you feel good about right now having accomplished or done in the past year?✅And how are you going to celebrate? My hype songs as we enter 2025 are "I Am Not Okay" by Jelly Roll and "Fearless" by The Goo Goo Dolls.Resources:My Website: https://ZenRabbit.com/ LinkedIn: https://zenrabbit.com/linkedin/ Facebook: https://zenrabbit.com/facebook/ Instagram: https://zenrabbit.com/instagram/Visit the “FINE is a 4-Letter Word” store at https://zenrabbit.printful.me Also check out Episode #67, Gratitude Through Hard Times with Chris Schembra.Invitation from Lori: Let me ask you, if there was a simple way to reclaim your peace of mind and not feel so frazzled, would you want to know what it is? Turn your disadvantages into advantages! Chaz talked about losing sight but gaining a love for guitar, rocking with the Goo Goo Dolls, prank calling Tom Shultz of Boston, punk band tracking sessions, the famous $300 drum sound, & his new Atmos room. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Charles Root III, a recording, mixing, reluctant mastering engineer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. He has performed on releases by Goo Goo Dolls, Monkey Wrench, Stationwagon, Doombuggy, and Acme Anvil Corp. He is also Terran based biped who has improperly assumed human form, as evidenced by his poor eyesight. Due to this poor vision, he smells and hears things that others don't, which can be a blessing or a curse in the confines of a recording studio. Chaz missed most of his sophomore and junior years of high school due to blindness and eye surgeries. He spent most of that period in his room with a walnut Explorer guitar, Marshall Plexi half stack, and a pile of old Electro-Harmonix pedals making sounds custom tailored to annoy his parents. Chaz currently resides in South Wales, NY, USA with his wife and studio partner Julie "JJ" Guyse where they operate Electric Owl Works, LLC which includes a residential recording studio, Rachael's Owl Music (a BMI affiliated music publishing company), and the Electric Owl Works Records indie label. They are proud to have artists of many genres from around the world. Thank you to Matt Boudreau for the introduction! SYDNEY STERLACETeam Gwen Hometown & Resident of Buffalo, NY Although Sydney is the only musical one in her family, she has always had their full support throughout her journey. It began with competing in local talent shows when she was 7 and by the time she was 10, she had already struck gold by winning first place in the Erie County Fair Talent Competition. She has since kept that momentum, singing the national anthem at a Buffalo Sabres game this year and multiple Buffalo Bisons games. She has also been a regular performer at a local music arts festival organized by Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls. Her dedicated mom has played a crucial role in Sydney's success, including scouting singing opportunities on social media to finding local competitions for Sydney to compete. Sydney recently won a TikTok challenge promoted by Broadway Evolved. Unsure if the competition was real and never dreaming it would lead to anything, Sydney was blown away when she won. She was flown out to New York on an all-expenses-paid trip for a weeklong Broadway intensive with Betsy Wolfe, an experience she will never forget.MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS 8/7cMichael Bublé, Gwen Stefani, Reba McEntire and Snoop Dogg search for the country's best singers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.
