Welcome back to When Words Fail Music Speaks, the show where we combat depression and despair with the healing power of music. I'm your host, James Cox, and today's episode is a truly moving one.We sit down with Mike Gomoll, the visionary founder of Joey Song, a non‑profit born from tragedy and turned into a beacon of hope. After his son Joey was diagnosed with a rare, devastating form of epilepsy—Dravet syndrome—Mike and his family faced unimaginable loss. Rather than letting grief win, they channeled their love of music into a mission: raise awareness, fund research, and support families navigating epilepsy.Mike shares his journey from a college nightclub manager at Madison's legendary Headliners, through a long corporate stint at IBM, to becoming the driving force behind a series of benefit concerts that have raised over a million dollars. He explains how music became Joey's sole language, how “when words fail, music speaks” became the rallying cry for his cause, and why a night of rock legends—Butch Vig, Rick Nielsen, members of the Goo Goo Dolls, the Bangles, and more—volunteer their time to perform for a good cause. We'll hear stories of spontaneous on‑stage magic, the unique “super‑group” covers that turn classic hits into unforgettable tributes, and Mike's vision for expanding Joey Song beyond Madison. Along the way, we'll demystify epilepsy, bust common myths, and discover why a simple “D”—Joey's cue to dance—could be the world's most powerful message. If you've ever wondered how one family turned personal tragedy into a movement that harnesses the universal language of music, this episode is for you. Grab your headphones, get ready to feel inspired, and remember: when words fail, music speaks. Let's dive in.
Dust off your pagers and grab a Surge soda! This week, Dave and Rob are hopping into the time machine and dialing the coordinates to June 9th, 1996. The box office was dominated by Mission: Impossible, the Macarena was slowly taking over the planet, and the Billboard Hot 100 was a wild mix of legendary hip-hop, R&B royalty, alt-rock, and powerhouse vocalists What makes this specific week so legendary is the sheer, whiplash-inducing sonic contrast sharing real estate on the charts. It was a bizarre and beautiful era where the mournful, rapid-fire hip-hop harmonies of Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and 2Pac's aggressive West Coast swagger sat side-by-side with the pristine, sweeping adult contemporary ballads of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. Throw in the raw acoustic storytelling of Tracy Chapman, Alanis Morissette's alt-rock bite, and a rising, inescapable bilingual novelty dance craze like the Macarena, and you get a snapshot of a musical landscape that was wildly fragmented yet universally massive Chapters 00:00 - Pagers, Surge, and the Macarena: Welcome to 1996 2:10 - Remembering Peabo Bryson and Our Influencer Status 4:07 - Graduating into 1996's Wildly Fragmented Music Scene 9:22 - Diving Into the Billboard Hot 100: Cuts & Honorable Mentions 13:15 - "5:00" by Nonchalant: A 90s Hip Hop Gem 18:36 - "Sweet Dreams" by La Bouche: Eurodance 1996 22:11 - "Tres Delinquentes": West Coast Latin Rap's Breakthrough 26:37 - "Old Man and Me": Hootie's Underrated Sophomore Album 30:25 - Kicking Off our Best of 1996 Billboard Top 10 31:27 - Everclear's "Heart Spark Dollar Sign": An Interracial Love Story 35:00 - Coolio's "1,2,3,4": A Fun Summer Jam 38:57 - Dishwalla's "Counting Blue Cars": Mid-90s Post Grunge Classic 42:36 - Garbage's "Only Happy When It Rains": A 90s Rock Anthem 46:25 - Lenny Kravitz's "Can't Get You Off My Mind" 49:52 - Goo Goo Dolls "Name": A Chart-Topping Personal Ballad 57:13 - Brandy's "Sittin' Up In My Room": A Teen Infatuation Anthem 59:50 - The Tony Rich Project's "Nobody Knows": Country Crossover Hit 1:05:12 - Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason": A Bluesy Career Revitalizer 1:08:04 - Smashing Pumpkins' "1979": The Quintessential Gen X Song 1:10:08 - Snapple, Clearly Canadian, and Our 1996 Billboard List Review Playlists: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IEysWlUdIzxLhnrSmu1bx?si=DVgK8cegRq-FqwVtoZGlqQ Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/billboard-hot-100-june-9th-1996/pl.u-76oN9NpFNz2Y05?ls Amazon: Click HERE to access the Amazon playlist for this episode https://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100/1996-06-15/ Connect with Totally 80s and 90s Recall Website: https://bleav.com/shows/totally-80s-and-90s-recall/ Email: 80s90srecall@gmail.com Voicemail: (509) 426-4542 Linktree: https://linktr.ee/80s90srecall Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Overcoming Loss & Fighting Epilepsy With Music | Michael Gomoll Joey Gomoll died in 2010, just shy of his 5th birthday, after battling a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet's Syndrome his entire life. Upon his passing, his family started a charity called Joey's Song to help raise money to fund research grants focused on finding treatments and cures for rare, intractable, pediatric epilepsies. In the 15-plus years since Joey's death, Joey's Song has grown from a few acoustic guitars in a sports bar to a multi-day concert series featuring Grammy winners and Rock n Roll Hall of Famers (Members of bands like Cheap Trick, Guns N Roses, The Go-Go's, The Bangles, Tears For Fears, Garbage, Portugal. The Man, Goo Goo Dolls, Eve 6, Everclear and many more). This amazing collection of musicians gathers every January in Madison, WI. They volunteer their time and talent, and form a series of supergroups throughout the weekend for a one-of-a-kind concert event.Since its inception, Joey's Song has been a part of over $ 2 million raised and has had over 10,000 attendees in just the last two years.Links:https://www.joeyssong.org/https://www.instagram.com/joeyssongTagspodcast for creatives, creative podcast, podcast creator interviews, professional podcast, creative podcasts, podcast host interviews, creative podcast ideas,Child Loss, epilepsy,Event Management,Family,Fundraising,Live Music,Music Festivals,Music Interviews,Music Production,Overcoming AdversitySupport PEG by checking out our Sponsors:Download and use Newsly for free now from www.newsly.me or from the link in the description, and use promo code “GHOST” and receive a 1-month free premium subscription. The best tool for getting podcast guests:https://podmatch.com/signup/phantomelectricghostSubscribe to our Instagram for exclusive content:https://www.instagram.com/expansive_sound_experiments/Subscribe to our YouTube https://youtube.com/@phantomelectricghost?si=rEyT56WQvDsAoRprRSShttps://anchor.fm/s/3b31908/podcast/rssSubstackhttps://substack.com/@phantomelectricghost?utm_source=edit-profile-page
Send us Fan MailAfter a long Memorial Day weekend, Paul jumps back into the Tuesday commute already feeling like the week is off schedule — and then dives headfirst into a brutally honest reaction to the American Music Awards. From confusion over modern music categories to wondering who half the performers even are anymore, this episode turns into a funny, slightly cranky, very relatable Gen X-style rant about today's music industry and award shows.Paul talks about:Why the AMAs feel completely different from the Grammy AwardsThe bizarre “Best Throwback Song” categorySeeing artists like Black Eyed Peas, Goo Goo Dolls, Twenty One Pilots, Linkin Park, and Billy Idol mixed into a show dominated by newer pop actsWhy BTS and global music culture still feels disconnected to some American audiencesHow award shows now feel overly scripted and manufacturedAnd why Billy Idol getting pushed to the end of the broadcast felt criminalPlus:

Hailing from Buffalo with a "Rust Belt Rock 'n' Roll" sound, Letter to Elise masterfully balances 80s alt-pop shimmer with raw, modern energy and blue-collar grit. Following a breakout run on NBC's The Voice as part of Team Reba, where Reba McEntire herself praised their high-energy performance and harmonies, the band has solidified their hometown pride with their debut record, Risen From Rust. Having shared the stage with icons like Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls and captivated festival crowds like Music is Art, the group continues to build a loyal following through their authentic blend of soaring synths, driving guitars, and a story of resilience that proves something golden can always rise from the Rust Belt. Elliott and Chris visited the Flamingo Lounge on April 28 to talk about and share their music.

It's a WAYLT Crossover week as Jenn joined Matt Sidhom on the Super Awesome Mix podcast last week to trade picks that connect by title, lyric, and mood with the focus on the words 'may' or 'might'. We start with the Bee Gees in their pre-disco glow, then jump to Led Zeppelin and the “May Queen” line that still feels like a life lesson about choices and changing course. From there, we test a common music debate: is “new country” actually bad, or did a certain pop-country era poison the well? Zach Bryan's “Fifth of May” becomes the case study for modern country songwriting that feels specific, honest, and lived-in. The ride keeps swerving in the best way. We talk Bruno Mars as a talent machine, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska era grit, and the hidden story inside the Goo Goo Dolls' “Slide” when you actually listen to the lyrics. Then it's The Cars, They Might Be Giants, and Metallica in a sequence that proves a good mix can handle whiplash if the theme is strong. We even slow down for “It Might Be You” and a real question about Tootsie, comedy, and whether nuance survives modern pop culture. https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/may-might-songs/pl.u-4kK9uRm05vFirst of May - Bee GeesStairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin Fifth of May - Zach Bryan I Just Might - Bruno MarsAtlantic City - Bruce SpringsteenSlide - The Goo Goo Dolls You Might Think - The Cars Birdhouse In Your Soul - They Might Be Giants Wherever I May Roam - Metallica It Might Be You - Stephen Bishop I May Be Used (But Baby I Aint Used Up) - Waylon Jennings May Ninth - Khruangbin

Andy sits down in the WCZR studio with Mike Gomoll, the founder of Joey's Song — a Wisconsin-based nonprofit that has raised over $1 million to support families affected by epilepsy and fund research toward a cure.Mike shares the deeply personal story behind the organization: how he lost his son Joseph just days before his fifth birthday to Dravet syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy that left Joey nonverbal — but with an unmistakable love for music. Joey would grab everyone's finger in the room and make sure they were up and dancing with him. That spirit became the heartbeat of everything Joey's Song does.In this interview, you'll hear about:- How Mike went from a $500 fundraising goal to over $1 million raised for epilepsy research and family support- The origin story of the annual Freezing Man Festival in Madison, WI — and how it evolved from a sports bar CD release party into what feels like a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony every January- The legendary musicians who have performed for free, including Butch Vig (Garbage/Nirvana producer), John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, Tracy Bonham, Portugal. The Man, Vicky Peterson of The Bangles, Soul Asylum, and many more- Why Mike's son Sam performs at the event every year — and how his first-ever full band performance was backed by Paul McCartney's guitarist Brian Ray with Butch Vig on drums- The behind-the-scenes "beautiful chaos" that makes every Joey's Song show unrepeatable and unforgettable- New limited-edition artist merchandise available now at joeysong.org, designed by artists like Kurt Smith, Vicky Peterson, and Charlie Berens- Mike's dream wish list of future performers (hint: Dave Grohl, Eddie Vedder, and Jason Isbell are on it)If you've never been to a Joey's Song event, people who have will tell you: you cannot understand it until you're there.Learn more, donate, or get on the mailing list: joeysong.orgFollow Joey's Song on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn & YouTube: @joeysong

It started as a fun little bracket… and now it's basically a personality test for society.Welcome back to another comedy podcast episode of The Rizzuto Show, where March Movie Mayhem has officially spiraled into emotional damage. We've reached the FINAL FOUR of the greatest 90s movies of all time—and apparently, the internet has decided joy is optional. The contenders? Oh, just a casual lineup of:The Silence of the Lambs (you know, light viewing…)Tommy Boy (Chris Farley = national treasure)The Shawshank Redemption (aka emotional devastation on repeat)Wayne's World (finally, some sanity)So yeah… two comedies vs. two “let's sit in silence after this” movies. What could go wrong? The crew debates whether America is secretly depressed based on voting trends, Learns threatens to emotionally collapse if the fun movies lose, and somehow we all collectively realize that people might actually prefer prison drama over Mike Myers yelling “SCHWING.”But wait—it gets better (worse).Out of nowhere, the Goo Goo Dolls get absolutely obliterated. Specifically:The song “Iris”? Declared overrated. The fans? Accidentally roasted. The band? Still out here catching strays in 2026.We also somehow spiral into:90s nostalgia prize packs (yes, Dunkaroos are involved)Yacht rock appreciation (because of course)Beard-based musical analysis (don't ask, just listen)And a reminder that no matter what happens… your bracket is already bustedIt's everything you want from a comedy podcast:arguments, nostalgia, chaos, and at least one completely unnecessary rant that somehow becomes the highlight.Vote in the bracket, pick your side, and emotionally prepare yourself—because if Shawshank wins this whole thing, we're gonna have questions.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Why do some songs vanish after a few weeks while others quietly define generations? In this masterclass episode of The Artiste Hangout Podcast with Femi Makx, we dissect the DNA of the 1998 masterpiece “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls — a song that refuses to die.Beyond the nostalgia, we peel back the layers: its haunting mandolin-driven arrangement, the emotional pull of its 6/8 time signature, and the raw, vulnerable songwriting that has kept it charting for nearly three decades. Released on April 1, 1998, for the City of Angels soundtrack, “Iris” became the most-streamed song of the entire 1990s in the US in 2025 (337.9 million streams according to Luminate), has surpassed 3 billion streams on Spotify, and continues trending strongly in 2026 thanks to organic moments in Deadpool & Wolverine, the series Shrinking, and viral TikTok nostalgia. But why should the Afrobeats generation care?As the Nigerian music industry matures from “viral moments” to building “global legacies,” Femi Makx draws a provocative parallel between this Alternative Rock classic and the future of African sound. We explore:• The “Iris” Blueprint: How unconventional composition and emotional permanence can outlast any trend.• Songwriting vs. Vibes: Why Nigerian artistes must move beyond catchy hooks to intelligent, evergreen storytelling — the kind that secures long-term royalties and generational impact.• The Sonic Bridge: Lessons in cross-genre appeal that can elevate Afrobeats from the dancefloor to timeless catalogues and international Hall of Fame recognition.• The Power of Intelligent Lyrics: Why well-thought-out, honest songwriting beats rushed studio sessions every single time.Whether you're an upcoming artiste recording on a budget or a established act chasing the next big wave, this episode challenges you to create music that doesn't just trend — it endures. The Artiste Hangout Podcast with Femi Makx is ranked in the Top 10% of podcasts globally and has charted in over 128 countries. Having recently peaked at #3 on the Apple Music Interview charts in Ghana and trended across 116 countries on Spotify, Femi Makx continues to bridge technical artistry with real-world industry wisdom.Join the conversation that's shaping the next era of African music excellence.Listen now and start building your own evergreen legacy.
We are looking at popular songs over the last 40 years or so… and seeing how some are eerily prophetic or in other words, ring true to what we feel and go through! We are going to study them specifically because their lyrics and significance tends to tell us things that align with scripture and about God.

Welcome to The Joe Concha Show, where common sense goes head-to-head with the absurdity of modern politics! In this action-packed episode, Joe breaks down the chaos at America's airports caused by government funding fights, and praises ICE agents for stepping up while taking fire from progressive politicians. Joe pulls no punches as he roasts out-of-touch leaders like Gavin Newsom for releasing violent criminals and Philadelphia's DA for threatening to arrest federal agents.Need a laugh? Hear Vince Vaughn perfectly diagnose the downfall of agenda-driven late-night TV, and listen in horror as clueless spring breakers confess they don't know who the Ayatollah is. Plus, Joe offers a passionate defense of the Goo Goo Dolls' Rock & Roll Hall of Fame eligibility, takes a stand against wearing sweatpants at steakhouses, and defends blue-collar plumbers from Hollywood elitists like Jimmy Kimmel. Today's daily podcast is what happens when you invite an Elvis clown into the studio and just… let things spiral.Clownvis Presley hangs out with the crew to talk about his upcoming “Oddballs and Outlaws Tour,” including a big stop at Red Flag in St. Louis. It's part concert promo, part existential confusion, and fully entertaining. If you've never seen Clownvis before, imagine Elvis… but somehow more chaotic and slightly more honest.Meanwhile, Rafe is laser-focused on one goal: getting onto Willie Nelson's tour bus. Not metaphorically. Literally. This turns into a full-blown mission involving questionable disguises, loose connections, and the kind of confidence you only get from zero actual planning. If you've ever tried to “manifest” something with no real strategy, this is your guy.We also dive deep into March Movie Mayhem, where 90s classics go head-to-head and friendships are tested. Dumb & Dumber vs Office Space? Tommy Boy vs Austin Powers? These are the kinds of decisions that say a lot about you—and none of it is good. Then comes the music game… which might be the most aggressively dumb and frustrating game we've ever played on this daily podcast. Tiny sound clips, wild guesses, and just enough confidence to make everyone look ridiculous. In “Crap on Celebrities,” we break down Moby trying to cancel a classic song (because of course he is), debate whether Goo Goo Dolls' “Iris” is actually terrible (Rizz says yes, loudly), and somehow spiral into a full-blown argument about 80s movies that still hold up today. It's messy. It's loud. It's completely unnecessary. And it's exactly what you expect from The Rizzuto Show.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Show Notes They don't know me 'cause I'm not here - sometimes a Goo Goo Dolls song is actually the theme song to a movie you didn't know existed, so we are learning things this week with Treasure Planet from 2002. A story that has been put on film a number of times, this iteration gives us space twist with cyborgs and mantis and morphs, oh my. If you have daddy issues, this one's for you. In this episode of Previously On, Jillian dives into Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette - Episode 5, “Battery Park.” What she called a “vibes show” last week has officially entered its drama era. From a tense Hyannis family dinner to a surprise proposal, a very public denial, and the infamous Battery Park fight, this episode cracks open the fairytale and shows the pressure building around one of the most iconic couples of the '90s. The love is still there, but so are the cameras, the expectations, and the weight of the Kennedy legacy. In honor of Jillian watching a lot of this ep covering her eyes, she counts down the Top 5 “Horror Movie” Moments of the episode that includes the Kennedy family foreign policy pop quiz, the unsettling proposal timing, and of course the infamous public fight. (Plus: Jessica Harper of Suspiria fame playing Ethel Kennedy? The horror vibes were baked in.)Jillian unpacks the proposal heard 'round the tabloids and why John's denial to the press cuts so deep, especially for Carolyn, who is already struggling with the reality of what it means to enter his world. She explores Carolyn's fear of losing herself, her hesitation about politics and public life, and her need for reassurance that she'll be protected. And yes, we have to talk about that Goo Goo Dolls needle drop that seals one of the coolest, most complicated “yes” moments ever.00:00 Intro to pod01:02 Episode 5 "Battery Park"03:12 Top 5 Horror Moments03:23 Dinner at Ethel Kennedy's06:30 Carolyn meets up with Michael Bergin07:28 John proposes to Carolyn11:09 John denies proposal to press13:10 Carolyn and John fight in Battery Park18:30 Michael Berman sleeping in the office18:59 RoseMarie, John's assistant19:21 Friday the dog19:38 Calvin Klein21:18 Date em.
