Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
In the heart of the Disney Renaissance, the studio that had already back-to-back box office smashes (and Academy Award winners) in Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin unleashed its 32nd animated feature. The Lion King pounced into theaters in the summer of 1994, becoming the highest-grossing animated film ever at the time of its release and spawning a cultural phenomenon. This episode, Danielle Solzman of Solzy at the Movies joins us to discuss the film on its 25th anniversary. Of course, we'll also cover this year's "live-action" remake from director Jon Favreau, how the two versions of the story compare and why the original animated The Lion King serves as a seminal cinematic achievement and veritable turning point for the future of animation. Cue up that iconic Hans Zimmer score, and let's trek on over to Pride Rock for our discussion on The Lion King. With the new photo-realistic computer-animated remake of the horizon, it is time… to look at the original Disney animated classic that also celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary – The Lion King. Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, The Lion King is the thirty-second Disney Animated feature film, which takes us to an African kingdom of lions and follows Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa (James Earl Jones), as King of the Pride Lands. After Simba’s paternal uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) murders Mufasa, Simba is manipulated into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile. Upon growing up unconventionally with a meerkat and warthog duo – Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), Simba (Matthew Broderick) is given some valuable perspective from his childhood friend, Nala (Moira Kelly), and the wise Rafiki (Robert Guilaume), before returning to challenge Scar to end his tyranny and take his place as the rightful King in the great Circle of Life. Rewind to celebrate the vibrant colours of the animation sequences, a larger than life combination of characters and voice work, original songs written and produced by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice and a score by Hans Zimmer – but it wasn’t without several controversies.
