Mark Drummond spent his Apple years building the character intelligence team behind Apple Vision Pro, working with Marvel and Jon Favreau to figure out how Hollywood IP could come to life in AR. Now, at his startup Pixee, he's making the opposite bet: forget the headset, the iPhone is the better device for bringing characters into people's lives. Mark walks Charlie and Ted through Pixee's vision — send a licensed character like Elsa to sing happy birthday through iMessage, no app required — and the underlying tech that makes it possible, including an engine built with Claude that replaced Unreal and cut compile times from an hour to seven minutes. The conversation goes deep on the Apple Vision Pro's real tradeoffs, the neurobiology of why the headset can feel exhausting after an hour, and why Mark thinks Apple's rumored "spectacles" will quietly inherit lessons from AVP's failures. The news segment covers a big week of Big Tech earnings — Microsoft and Amazon soaring on cloud and ad growth, Meta and Apple taking hits — plus Anthropic's disclosure that its frontier AI models were used in real-world hacks, an AI-run vending machine experiment that lied to customers about refunds, the new ban on Chinese humanoid robot imports, and the growing backlash against AI smart glasses with outward-facing cameras.Key Moments: [01:35] Big Tech earnings and market winners/losers [06:35] AI models behind real-world hacks [09:35] Smart glasses and the "Glasshole" effect [17:35] Mark Drummond joins — Pixee's origin story [24:35] Apple Vision Pro history — what went wrong [41:35] Headset vs. phone: the case for AR on iPhone [50:35] Funding, protections, and the CDE philosophyBrought to you by Zappar and Mattercraft, the leading visual development environment for immersive 3D web experiences. Jonathan V. Last, editor of The Bulwark, stops by the show to talk to Lovett about his "Grand Unified Theory of Trumpism" — that Trump's opponent "will always choose surrender over discomfort." Together, they try to make sense of America's rotting political culture, breaking down when and where it all went wrong, and debate what it'll take for the nation to heal from this moment, be it a reckoning of virtue, kindness, or democratic will. Jonathan also walks Lovett through the echoes of Goebbels recently displayed by Secretary Marco Rubio and Stephen Miller and why he believes the desire for a figure like Trump may have always been present within the Republican base.Hate listening to ads? What happens when you turn your entire life over to AI for a year? Could it take over your emails or learn to mow your lawn? Would it replace your doctor or even your partner? Tech journalist Joanna Stern joins Offline to talk about her new book , I Am Not a Robot, where she embarked on that experiment, integrating AI into (almost) every aspect of her life for 365 days. She and Jon discuss what she learned about cancer treatment when she asked it to review her mammograms, what the experiment taught her about where AI may be most likely to displace workers, and why it left her thinking that AI regulation should begin at the local level.Hate listening to ads? Progressive candidates have serious momentum going into the upcoming primaries in Michigan and Wisconsin — but they'll have to figure out how to explain away some problematic old tweets. Meanwhile, Democrats land on a novel strategy for competing in deep red states (hint: it doesn't involve Democrats). Jon and Dan discuss the latest in all the key races, as well as Todd Blanche's failing nomination for attorney general, the administration's decision to deny disaster aid to four Democratic-led states, and Elon Musk's plan to pump $100 million into the midterms to support Republican candidates. Then, they check in on the AI singularity, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says has officially arrived, and debate how Democrats should talk about AI going forward.Hate listening to ads? Anthony Fauci gives Republicans the silent treatment, Mitch McConnell somehow says even less, and Joe Biden overshares enough for both of them. Daveed Diggs stops by to talk supervillains and elaborate musical contraptions, then we get just dumb enough with the great Anthony Michael Hall. Donald Trump just got one step closer to stealing the next election. The Senate confirms a new head of National Intelligence: former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton — a man who won't say who won the 2020 election. This week, Alex looks into whether or not Trump will try to steal the midterms. She's first joined by Errin Haines, an Atlanta native, editor at large at The 19th, author of the Amendment newsletter, and co-host of Crooked's newest show, Long Play, to talk about Georgia: the state Trump has focused his most intense efforts of election interference. Then Alex speaks with Joy Reid, host of The Joy Reid Show, to try and get a handle on Trump's latest efforts to subvert the election and figure out how prepared we really are.Hate listening to ads? Hawk pushes back on how that gap is being framed. The headline 510 million Republican figure folds in the roughly 400 million sitting in Donald Trump's personal super PAC, money Hawk notes Trump has not spent to help a single Republican candidate this cycle. Set that aside, he argues, and the comparison looks very different. He also explains why so many Democratic donors abandoned the DNC after 2016, when hacked emails revealed the committee favoring Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders, and why small-dollar donors now give directly to candidates instead. From there Hawk covers a New York Times report describing Martin as isolated and struggling, the botched 2024 autopsy report and the rough Jon Favreau interview that followed, the fight over moving South Carolina to the front of the primary calendar, and James Carville floating David Hogg as a replacement. His bottom line: the DNC is a mess, but the candidates are funded and positioned to retake the House. Seven years following the release of Rise of Skywalker, it is once again time to talk about an entry in the Star Wars universe. However, this time it's not a juggernaut that stays on top of the box office for weeks and weeks. This time, Jon Favreau and company fell victim to two YouTube phenoms who came and took the box office over like a sand storm on Tatooine. So, what happened? Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they try to dissect that last question, as well as the plot to the movie that contains Disney's most popular Star Wars Disney Plus character…and The Mandalorian! And as revealed last week, we will start up the Masters of the Universe retrospective next week with a review of 1987's Dolph Lundgren starring Cannon Films production!!

When the House of Mouse scooped up Lucasfilm and the whole shimmering STAR WARS galaxy, fans practically twirled their lightsabers in delight. At long last, the Skywalker saga would get its final trio of tales, and the universe would stretch outward like a hyperspace jump with no end in sight. Then The Mandalorian swaggered onto the scene, and suddenly everyone had a new space-cowboy obsession—plus a tiny green heart‑stealer soon christened Grogu, who promptly became the galaxy's smallest cultural supernova. But after The Book of Boba Fett and a wobblier third season of The Mandalorian, the shine began to dull, and even the Skywalker finale left many feeling like they'd stepped on a LEGO brick in the dark.Still, a question hovered in the air like a hologram: did Grogu—and to a slightly lesser degree his helmeted dad—still hold enough goodwill to charm audiences back into theaters? 2026 was set to answer that cosmic riddle with the first STAR WARS film to hit the big screen in seven years: The Mandalorian and Grogu. IMDB summed it up with a wink of simplicity: once a solitary bounty hunter, Din Djarin now ventures into a fresh adventure with his pint‑sized apprentice, ready to stir up trouble, wonder, and probably a few merchandising opportunities.Jon Favreau directed the film from a script he crafted alongside Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, assembling a cast that reunited Pedro Pascal while adding Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver to the mix. Critics offered everything from polite nods to warm applause, while audiences tended to beam a bit brighter—yet the film still struggled to recoup its hefty budget, falling short of the blockbuster hopes Disney had pinned to it. Now your co‑hosts dive into this star‑studded space romp, sharing their thoughts on whether this latest chapter rekindles the magic or simply drifts among the cosmic dust.
Danny and Kevin continue their conversation on the new Star Wars products by discussing the movie that came and went, The Mandalorian and Grogu, also known as Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. This strangely timed phone-in job from Jon Favreau and crew vexes Danny and Kevin as they wonder what is going in those offices at Lucasfilm or Disney or whatever. No spoiler alert warning was given because there is literally nothing to spoil in this boring but kind of fun at times action adventure movie. A talking raccoon and a sentient tree?! When Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' hit theatres in 2014, it faced doubts from all angles, from Kree and Xandarians alike. However, James Gunn's injection of humour, colour and the right amount of irreverence quickly made the film an instant fan-favourite. 12 years later, it's made it to Number 7 on our MCU 12 list. Some are saying that's really the most important part of its legacy. Star Wars week comes a bit later this year courtesy of the first theatrical Star Wars movie to be released in 7 years. The Mandalorian and Grogu meet The Corn Dog and Cap'n Pop. Just Play It has a bounty on the Jon Favreau & Dave Filoni family fun adventure film so Nick and James bump the sickest Shakari synth track in the Razor Crest on the way to the theaters. The vice president of the United States called a meeting in the Situation Room last year to discuss the administration's cover-up of the Epstein files. Never mind that there were allegations in the files that Trump had had sex with an underage girl in Epstein's child trafficking ring—and which somehow involved Trump's alleged nipple fetish. The Epstein victims and the underlying crimes were not a priority in the meeting; getting Ghislaine or Vance on a friendly podcast was. Today we're diving into the incredible journey of Johnny Coyne, an actor who traveled from the rugged mountains of Cyprus to the legendary sets of the Star Wars universe. Known for his "great face" and iconic turns as authoritarian villains in The Blacklist, Preacher, and Alcatraz, Johnny pulls back the curtain on the "panic" and imposter syndrome that still fuel his craft today. We explore how a RADA-trained talent who once packed shelves at Toys "R" Us transitioned from "unconsciously unskilled" to landing direct offers from Jon Favreau and sharing the screen with legends like Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Whether he's a mysterious warden or finding the vulnerable lost boy inside a master villain, Johnny's story is a raw, hilarious, and inspiring masterclass in resilience and the power of simply keeping the motor going. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Jonny Coyne right here. The release of a new Star Wars film wouldn't be complete without checking in with filmmaker Kyle Newman to get his thoughts on the latest addition to the saga. Kyle joins us In The Cantina with his review of The Mandalorian and Grogu and provides insight as both an industry insider and Star Wars superfan. We've collected a ton of cool interview highlights from Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Pedro Pascal discussing the Mando movie and screenwriter Damon Lindelof recently spoke about the Rey "New Jedi Order" film script he worked on before getting fired off the project. It's a packed line-up of directors this week on The Interviews, folks. Directorpalooza? First up, we bring you an extended excerpt from our spoiler special interview with The Mandalorian And Grogu, Jon Favreau, who tells Chris Hewitt about his intentions behind the first big-screen Star Wars film in seven years. Then Chris leaps onto Zoom to have a lovely natter with the great Joe Dante about his beloved (eventually) 1987 sci-fi comedy, InnerSpace, which is out now on 4K UHD, and English director Mike Figgis about his hard-hitting, Oscar-winning drama, Leaving Las Vegas, which has also received the 4K UHD treatment. The Figgis chat is an extended excerpt from an hour-long deep dive into the movie which, like the Favreau interview and Team Empire diving deep into The Mandalorian And Grogu, can be found over on our spoiler special feed. empirespoilerspecials.com, if you haven't already taken the plunge. From the state where Trump claims he'd win if Jesus counted the votes, Sarah and Sam joined Tim live on stage in San Diego to debate who is the most cucked Republican and whether Bill Cassidy should get credit for his late-in-the-game YOLO opposition to Trump. Also, Jeff Bezos has Tim rethinking his opposition to socialism, and how could Bibi and Trump have had such an absurd plan for a new Iranian president? At the top of the pod, Amanda Carpenter runs down the thug fund (don't call it a slush fund) and Trump's effort to get permanent immunity from any tax liability for himself and his family. Plus, POTUS's revenge tour may backfire, and the administration may try using Fulton County as a test case for taking over vote counting in Democratic counties. Tennessee is on the front lines of the racialized politics that has resurfaced in the South since SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act. Its Jim Crow legislature stripped the people of Memphis of congressional representation for their majority-black city, and Democratic legislators have been punished for protesting the move. The state is looking less like a democracy by the day. Meanwhile, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Louisiana are also working on dismantling black political power in their states. Donald Trump—as a private citizen—sued our government, which he runs, and then "settled" the lawsuit with $1.8 billion that he stole from the U.S. Treasury. Sadly, it's taken some time, but voters seem to be figuring out that Trump only cares about himself, his ballroom, his blatant corruption, and his unquenchable desire for revenge. 2026, so far, has been bad for his approval ratings. And his continued weakness on the world stage, especially when it comes to Iran and China, will only drive his numbers down more. At the same time, Trump has done permanent damage to our standing among our allies. Because Donald Trump has so thoroughly hijacked the Department of Justice, the public can no longer be confident that a criminal investigation or indictment is legitimate. The default assumption is that official DOJ actions are about servicing Trump's needs for validation, power, or retribution—like the latest seashell-related charges against Comey. Acting AG Todd Blanche acts like a mobster, wears his partisanship on his sleeve, and appears to be breaking the law himself. And at the FBI, Kash Patel presides over a smaller and demoralized and distracted staff, which leaves Comey worried for the safety of our country. There's a lot going on in this year's midterm elections. Tennessee Republicans approved a new map on Thursday, splitting the majority-Black voting district that encompasses the city of Memphis – and possibly eliminating the state's only blue congressional seat. The president also got to flex his muscles this week in Indiana's Republican primary. Candidates with his support beat at least five Republican incumbents who had voted against his redistricting plans in the state. So what does all of this mean for the midterms? To find out, we talked to Jon Favreau. He's a co-host of Pod Save America. And in headlines, Russia preps for its annual Victory Day Parade, two reports shed new light on the Iran war, and President Donald Trump tries to square up with a child in the Oval Office.Show Notes: Call Congress – 202-224-3121 Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/y4y2e9jy What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcast Follow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/ For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday
