Welcome to the very first episode of I Killed My Tamagotchi!Things immediately go off the rails when Tommy James opens the show with a confession so shocking that Alex "A-Town" Ryan spends the rest of the episode questioning their entire 25-year friendship. From there, the guys dive into the Disney Renaissance and rank the songs that defined a generation. From The Little Mermaid and Aladdin to Mulan, The Lion King, Hercules, and more, they debate classics, share childhood memories, and discover just how differently they view some of Disney's most beloved films.Along the way, they take a trip back to June 1999, revisit Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, celebrate the New York Knicks making another Finals run, and somehow keep circling back to one particular Disney movie Tommy has never seen.Plus, the very first Heartthrob email arrives. A mysterious admirer has their sights set on Alex or Mat, kicking off a season-long game filled with hidden clues, bad decisions, and the possibility of public embarrassment at the Sock Hop Dance.Whether you grew up rewinding VHS tapes, belting Disney songs in your bedroom, arguing over the best soundtrack of the 90s, or desperately trying to keep a digital pet alive, you've found your people.Welcome to I Killed My Tamagotchi.

Disney is changing... and we have opinions. In this episode of Hangin' at the Hangar Bar, Scott and Candice take a break from trip planning and nostalgia to talk about some of the biggest changes happening across Walt Disney World. From major attraction overhauls to entirely new lands, Disney is investing billions into the future of the parks—but are they making the right decisions? Before we dive in, we start with an important correction regarding Star Tours and Star Wars Launch Bay, proving once again that we are always willing to admit when we get something wrong. Then we tackle some of the biggest topics currently shaping the future of Walt Disney World:• The massive Carousel of Progress refurbishment and why it has Disney fans divided• What a Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic means for Disney's future storytelling• The transformation of Frontierland and the arrival of Cars-themed Piston Peak• Villains Land and whether Disney's biggest expansion in decades can live up to the hype• The end of Muppets Courtyard and the arrival of Monstropolis• Rock 'n' Roller Coaster starring The Muppets and our first impressions of the reimagined attraction• Tropical Americas replacing DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney's Animal Kingdom• Indiana Jones, Encanto, Bluey, and the future identity of Animal Kingdom• Disney's growing focus on Walt Disney himself as part of the guest experience• Whether all of this construction is creating a new Disney Renaissance—or simply a lot of wallsAlong the way, we discuss what Disney is getting right, where we're still skeptical, and which projects have us the most excited for the future. What changes are you most excited about? Which ones make you nervous? Let us know on social media or in our Discord community. As always, thank you for hanging out with us at the Hangar Bar.Remember... there's always a great big beautiful tomorrow.

When Three Men and a Baby opened on 25th November 1987, few could have predicted that a low-budget remake of a French comedy, shot in Toronto, starring two television actors, a comedy star and a baby girl, would become the highest-grossing film of the year in the US and a genuine turning point in Hollywood history. Yet that is precisely what it did.The film arrived at a specific cultural inflection point. More women were entering the workforce, the feminist movement was reshaping assumptions about domestic labour, and the recession of the early eighties had nudged more fathers into caregiving roles. Against that backdrop, watching Tom Selleck's broad-shouldered leading man coo helplessly over a baby carried real comic charge, and tapped into something the culture was quietly working through: what modern fatherhood might actually look like. But the film's off-screen legacy is arguably more significant than anything on it. Disney in 1983 had nearly gone bankrupt on the catastrophic failure of The Black Cauldron. The creation of Touchstone Pictures and its low-budget, high-concept adult comedies was the rescue plan. Three Men and a Baby was its greatest proof of concept: the studio's first ever $100 million domestic grosser, crowning Disney as the number one studio in Hollywood by the end of 1987. The revenue that film and its Touchstone stablemates generated bought the animation department enough time, talent, and resources to complete The Little Mermaid two years later, and triggered the Disney Renaissance.A film about three hapless bachelors and an abandoned baby, made cheaply and quietly in Canada, may be one of the most consequential comedies Hollywood ever produced.Support Verbal DioramaLoved this episode? "Thanks for everything, Herc. It's been a real slice." We're back talking about Disney animated features this week, and watched the 90s classic Hercules (1997). Released smack dab in the middle of the Disney Renaissance, it's a movie that is a gold mine for the theme of our show. A coming-of-age story about an outsider on his journey to twink to twunk, a sassy lady with a high ponytail, a big-chested Greek God daddy, and most importantly Hades as the bitchy old queen. No wonder it was easy for us as children to gravitate towards everything on screen going on here. Topics discussed are the Supermanification of the Greek Gods, its pitch-perfect voiceover cast, a deep dive on the Meg fashion doll, and McDonald's iconic plates.   Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna Cover Art by Shaun Piela

A composer who has been capturing our imaginations for over 40 years, Alan Menken is best known for his stage and screen compositions for a slew of Walt Disney films and subsequent stage musicals. He was one of the creative powerhouses behind what has become known as the Disney Renaissance, composing for The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin amongst many other titles. And that was all in addition to his non-Disney shows, which include the classic Little Shop of Horrors and the stage version Sister Act. He's received an extraordinary number of awards – 8 Academy Awards, a Tony, 11 Grammies, 7 Golden Globes and a Daytime Emmy. He's collaborated with some of the most well-known lyricists in musicals – including Howard Ashman, Stephen Schwartz, Tim Rice, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. In this conversation, Alan traces his journey from a musically curious child more interested in improvising than practising, to one of the most decorated composers in entertainment history. He offers candid insights into his collaborations with lyricists such as Howard Ashman, the creative alchemy behind iconic works like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, and the constant process of rewriting, refining, and often discarding songs in pursuit of the finished product. Along the way, he speaks with honesty and humour about resilience, creative instinct, and the importance of not becoming too precious about your own work.A Whole New World of Alan Menken, comes to Melbourne's Palais Theatre on Wednesday May 6, and the Sydney Event Centre on Friday May 8.

After an unexpectedly long hiatus, we are back with a new episode in which the randomizer goes all the way back to 2023, to one of the seemingly hundreds of times Disney has taken one of their beloved awe-inspiring unforgettable animated masterpieces and reimagined it as a tolerated "meh"-inspiring live-action blockbuster that costs more than the GDP of most countries and completely leaves your memory before you even find your car in the parking lot. This time, they got around to remaking the film that changed animation forever, the era-defining fairy tale classic that revitalized the company and kicked off the Disney Renaissance. So naturally, for the remake they slathered everything in exceptionally ugly CGI, hired the "My Vag" lady to imitate 70s porn music (twice!) and got an oceanload of semi-deserved free publicity by angering the worst people on the internet when they dared to cast a (gasp!) b-b-b-b-b-b-BLACK woman as the titular fish-assed protagonist. Why is Disney's Hercules one of the greatest LGBTQ+ films ever made? This episode attempts to answer that fraught and necessary question. As you may know, Hercules (1997) is a story about a small-town girl who goes to the big city to discover himself, become famous, land a few sponsorship deals, and build a chosen family in an imperfect world. It's like All About Eve but with much, much better music. (Though Hades and Bette Davis look uncannily alike, I'll admit.)Hercules was the first anatomically male Disney princess to grace the silver screen – and this innovation changed the lives of every gay boy and girl born between 1987 and 1997.The fact that it has some of the sharpest writing of the Disney Renaissance – and deeply layered mythological references – did not escape our notice either.Which is why Bash and his honoured guest, Liv Albert (Let's Talk About Myths, Baby!) have embarked on a heroic quest to explore:

Disney has faced tough competition in animation, but some of its fiercest rivals came from inside the studio itself. In this episode, we uncover the Disney Defectors — the artists and executives who left to create new Disney animation competitors and changed the course of film history. Behind every Disney success story lies a trail of competition, and sometimes that competition came from within. This episode of Synergy Loves Company explores the five most important Disney Defectors — insiders who walked away from the Mouse House and reshaped animation history. We begin with Charles Mintz, whose betrayal nearly ended Walt Disney's career but ultimately led to the creation of Mickey Mouse. Then comes Ub Iwerks, the artistic genius behind Mickey who struck out to build his own studio. UPA challenged Disney's style with bold, modernist animation, while Don Bluth shook the industry in the 1980s by producing hit films that rivaled Disney at the box office. Finally, Jeffrey Katzenberg, one of the architects of the Disney Renaissance, left to co-found DreamWorks, sparking a new era of competition. Together, these Disney defectors reveal how Disney animation competitors didn't just come from Hollywood — they came from Disney's own ranks. If you love animation history, this episode shows how rivalry fueled innovation. ► Subscribe for more Disney connections: https://www.youtube.com/@SynergyLovesCompany?sub_confirmation=1

WHO PUT THE GLAD IN GLADIATOR!? HER-A-CLES! This week, the siblings are breaking down one of Carie's treasured favorites from the Disney Renaissance, Hercules (1997). Carie's inner Humanities student is rearing it's insufferable head this week for all of the incredibly sophisticated jokes in the script. Ross is having trouble with the mixed salad of Roman and Greek references. He's also predictably uncomfortable and entertained by James Woods as Hades, and Carie once again is testing Ross with her characterization of the film as "biconic." Also, this film did great things for himbos. Where are all of our soft buff men who just want to love us the way we deserve?  SUPPORT US ON PATREON!

Nestled at the tail end of the legendary series of films within the Disney Renaissance, Hercules is both a musical fantasy reimagining and kid-friendly family film that paints the traditional story of Heracles from Greek mythology in a brand new light. It's a bold film that cashes in on some of its bold choices (the Muses are such an excellent edition both tonally and musically) but perhaps encounters missteps on other choices (Zeus is decidedly not a standup dad). And we can't have a discussion about this film without absolutely gassing up James Woods' portrayal of Hades and a couple of excellent songs that have stood the test of time nearly three decades later. Plus, Iris brings a long overdue Trivia Corner that really tests the gang's knowledge (and Marcus' faith in himself) on Greek mythology. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

We're off this week, lil onions, but we wanted to rerun an ep that fits right in with our summer coverage of Disney Renaissance animated films, featuring Carie's all time fave, Robin Williams! This week, Carie is offending Ross' OCD by choosing a Disney film, Aladdin (1992) despite previous intentions of grouping them together. Carie defends this choice by lauding the amazing performance of her fave, Robin Williams, as the genie. Ross gets frustrated with multiple plot elements that make less than perfect sense, even for a children's film. The siblings get back to the root cause of why the film traumatized Ross in the first place, and then of course the bonus treat of Ross' unsolicited rant about Disney remakes.  SUPPORT US ON PATREON (PLEASE?) Composer Alan Menken is the winner of more Academy Awards in competitive categories than any other living person. He's best known for his scores for the animated Disney films including The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. His first big hit was the musical Little Shop Of Horrors - one of several he created with lyricist Howard Ashman, his longtime writing partner. Other stage musicals include Sister Act, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and Hercules, which recently opened in London's West End. Alan Menken also wrote the scores for Disney films Mirror Mirror, Enchanted and Tangled. As well as eight Academy Awards, he has also won eleven Grammys, seven Golden Globes, two Emmys and a Tony Award.Alan talks to John Wilson about his childhood in New York and the expectations of his parents that he would follow family tradition and become a dentist like his father. A musical talent from a young age, he recalls how seeing Walt Disney's Fantasia was the start of thinking about the marriage of music with story and images. Despite initial ambitions to be a singer-songwriter, enrolling in a workshop in New York for musical theatre composers, lyricists, and librettists led by composer Lehmann Engel taught him how to write for the stage. It is also through Engel that he met lyricist and director Howard Ashman with whom he went on to write many of the hit scores credited as the driving force behind the Disney Renaissance of the 1980s and 1990s. Tragically, Howard Ashman was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 and died at the age of 40 in 1991.Producer: Edwina Pitman

This 1989 film marked the beginning of the Disney Renaissance and set the template for modern Disney princess stories with its memorable songs and colorful characters. The trio discusses how this film revolutionized Disney animation, introducing the now-standard "I Want" song with "Part of Your World" (which executives initially wanted to cut!). They explore how Ariel represented a new kind of Disney princess: rebellious, independent, and actively pursuing her dreams, even if those dreams involved marrying a handsome prince at sixteen. From Ursula's divine inspiration (literally—she was modeled after drag queen Divine) to the spectacular voice talents of Jodi Benson, Pat Carroll, and Buddy Hackett, the podcast examines what made this film so magical. This week, lil onions, we're kicking off extended mainfeed coverage of Disney films from childhood, or what is more specifically known as the Disney Renaissance. The best place to start is at the beginning with 1989's The Little Mermaid! Carie manages to keep the big baby tears back as they unravel the story of Princess Ariel of Atlantic, a mermaid who wants to be part of the human world. After trading her voice to a sea witch to get the guy, she'll have to work fast to ensure she's not reduced to haunted seaweed as a pawn in some beef between her father and auntie. Carie describes an actual physiological relationship with the music and lyrics of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and Ross recalls a very specific affinity for a King Triton figurine.  SUPPORT US ON PATREON!

With a mix of clever storytelling, dark visuals, and a villain who's as charismatic as he is frightening, Basil proves that sometimes, the smallest heroes can save the day—or in this case, an entire animation division! The Great Mouse Detective (or Basil the Great Mouse Detective!) played a crucial role in ushering in the Disney Renaissance, and how its success helped revive the company's animation legacy, after the critical and financial disaster that was The Black Cauldron.Coming out at a crucial time for Disney, with a changing of the senior management guard, and combining traditional animation with early CGI, Basil has never had the acknowledgement he deserves for persuading Disney's senior management that investing in new movies, rather than just re-releasing old ones, was the way forward...And they did all of this in one year, with a massively reduced budget. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

"The Little Mermaid" sparked the Disney Renaissance of the '90s, burning unforgettable songs like "Under The Sea" and "Part of Your World" into the memories of Gen X and Millennials alike. Since then, Pixar and other studios have pushed animated features to levels we never thought possible. Digital framerates, lighting, sound and design are near perfection, making Disney's 1989 release feel a little dated. But old isn't necessarily bad. So listener Jackson M. posed this question to Shat The Movies: Does a 35-year-old "The Little Mermaid" still hold up? And it was a tough one to answer. In this episode, the Shat Crew explores whether Ariel was a nightmare child, why King Triton entrusted her safety to a singing crab and how Disney handled a teen mermaid's transition into a human girl.
