A Disney Renaissance ClassicJoin hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell with special guest Mandy Kaplan as they dive under the sea to explore Disney's animation breakthrough The Little Mermaid. This 1989 film marked the beginning of the Disney Renaissance and set the template for modern Disney princess stories with its memorable songs and colorful characters. The trio discusses how this film revolutionized Disney animation, introducing the now-standard "I Want" song with "Part of Your World" (which executives initially wanted to cut!). They explore how Ariel represented a new kind of Disney princess: rebellious, independent, and actively pursuing her dreams, even if those dreams involved marrying a handsome prince at sixteen. From Ursula's divine inspiration (literally—she was modeled after drag queen Divine) to the spectacular voice talents of Jodi Benson, Pat Carroll, and Buddy Hackett, the podcast examines what made this film so magical. They also hilariously point out the movie's scientific inaccuracies and questionable life lessons while acknowledging its undeniable charm and cultural impact.Key topics covered:How The Little Mermaid launched the Disney RenaissanceThe groundbreaking songwriting and animation techniquesScientific inaccuracies that plague the underwater worldAriel's questionable decision-making as a lovestruck teenagerPerfect villain creation with Ursula the sea witchThe hidden Disney princess dress references in Ariel's pink gownVoice actor highlights, including Mandy's date with the voice of Prince Eric! The film's enduring legacy and influence on subsequent Disney filmsDeep cut recommendations including Robin Hood, Enchanted, and the Descendants franchiseWhether you're a Disney adult or just appreciate the film's artistic significance, this episode captures why The Little Mermaid continues to enchant audiences decades later. As Krissy notes, "Whatever the magic is, they've got it." So grab your dinglehopper, brush up on your seagull vocabulary, and remember to be excellent to each other! --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! This week, lil onions, we're kicking off extended mainfeed coverage of Disney films from childhood, or what is more specifically known as the Disney Renaissance. The best place to start is at the beginning with 1989's The Little Mermaid! Carie manages to keep the big baby tears back as they unravel the story of Princess Ariel of Atlantic, a mermaid who wants to be part of the human world. After trading her voice to a sea witch to get the guy, she'll have to work fast to ensure she's not reduced to haunted seaweed as a pawn in some beef between her father and auntie. Carie describes an actual physiological relationship with the music and lyrics of Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and Ross recalls a very specific affinity for a King Triton figurine. Three decades later and Disney's 33rd animated feature remains one of its most controversial for its historical inaccuracies and racial depictions. Yet Pocahontas also remains a celebrated film for its score and songs, garnering Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz a pair of Academy Awards. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman leads a discussion of Pocahontas. Joining Brett are two guests who have examined Disney work from a scholarly sense: Dr. Peter Kunze, Assistant Professor of Communication at Tulane University, who was on the podcast a couple of years ago to discuss his book Staging a Comeback, as well as Dr. Michelle Anya Anjirbag-Reeve, Affiliated Researcher at the University of Antwerp. Michelle and Pete examine the roles of race, culture, language, and more in this thoughtful dialogue about how Pocahontas fits within the Disney Renaissance period and in the company more broadly. Email Pete at pkunze@tulane.edu and check out his book about Disney musicals - Staging a Comeback - on the Rugters University Press website. (Spoiler Section Length - 8min 58sec)Generally speaking, people consider the Disney Renaissance of the (mostly) 90s to be the height of the studio's output, thanks in no small part to critical and commercial titans like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. But there is one film above all others that gripped the cultural zeitgeist and never fully let go, one film that could be considered the champion of the era, its unofficial ruler. Its... king. Today we discuss that film, and whether its quality warrants that majestic reputation.

No other film from the Disney Renaissance has a legacy as mixed as Pocahontas. The studio expected Pocahontas would be every bit as big as The Lion King had been a year before. It wasn't, but it still did well, but not well enough for Disney. This podcast is now six! And to celebrate - some pre-Renaissance Disney.Basil may just be a little mouse, but this little mouse packed a mighty punch for Disney during a time when the animation studio was teetering on the edge of disaster. With a mix of clever storytelling, dark visuals, and a villain who's as charismatic as he is frightening, Basil proves that sometimes, the smallest heroes can save the day—or in this case, an entire animation division! The Great Mouse Detective (or Basil the Great Mouse Detective!) played a crucial role in ushering in the Disney Renaissance, and how its success helped revive the company's animation legacy, after the critical and financial disaster that was The Black Cauldron.Coming out at a crucial time for Disney, with a changing of the senior management guard, and combining traditional animation with early CGI, Basil has never had the acknowledgement he deserves for persuading Disney's senior management that investing in new movies, rather than just re-releasing old ones, was the way forward...And they did all of this in one year, with a massively reduced budget. I would love to hear your thoughts on (Basil) The Great Mouse Detective !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast! It is Thanksgiving week, so I know a lot of you are maybe having some busier weeks, finding some time with family and everything, and maybe you're considering going to see Moana 2 in the theater. In the early 1980s, Walt Disney Productions was struggling, largely bolstered by the success of its theme parks. Within fifteen years, however, it had become one of the most powerful entertainment conglomerates in the world. Staging a Comeback: Broadway, Hollywood, and the Disney Renaissance (Rutgers University Press, 2023) by Dr. Peter Kunze argues that far from an executive feat, this impressive turnaround was accomplished in no small part by the storytellers recruited during this period. Drawing from archival research, interviews, and textual analysis, Dr. Kunze examines how the hiring of theatrically trained talent into managerial and production positions reorganized the lagging animation division and revitalized its output. By Aladdin, it was clear that animation—not live action—was the center of a veritable “renaissance” at Disney, and the animated musicals driving this revival laid the groundwork for the company's growth into Broadway theatrical production. The Disney Renaissance not only reinvigorated the Walt Disney Company but both reflects and influenced changes in Broadway and Hollywood more broadly. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Newsies! Yes, at long last, we are talking about one of the most beloved musicals ever to starts as a failed Disney movie. Ali discusses the profound animated movie that capped off the Disney Renaissance era, Tarzan.
After talking about the animated classic two weeks ago, Rick and Sarah Says talk about other versions of The Little Mermaid. From musicals, to television, to theme parks, to live-action, there are a lot of different versions of the story.
Inbetweeners are the animators who draw the pages in between the lead animators' key frames. The in between doesn't get a lot of attention, but it is essential to move the animation forward. The same concept applies to the “in between era” that connects Walt Disney's passing to the Disney Renaissance. A tumultuous time period which often only gets a few chapters in history and is usually known only for mediocre box-office hits, now has its own book. Courtney and Emily welcome storyboard artist, screenwriter, director, and author, Stephen Anderson, to talk about that period that took us from the Walt Disney era to the Disney Renaissance in his book, “Disney In-Between: The Lost Years 1966-1986.” Anderson's book gives you an in depth history of lessons animators, writers, directors, and studio executives learned while navigating how to run the Disney studio and Disney brand without Walt. The 35th anniversary of the original Disney animated feature The Little Mermaid is coming up in November. To celebrate, Rick is joined by co-host Sarah Says for a conversation about the movie that isn't just nostalgic for many of our listeners, but also served as the kickstart to the Disney Renaissance.

"The Little Mermaid" sparked the Disney Renaissance of the '90s, burning unforgettable songs like "Under The Sea" and "Part of Your World" into the memories of Gen X and Millennials alike. Since then, Pixar and other studios have pushed animated features to levels we never thought possible. Digital framerates, lighting, sound and design are near perfection, making Disney's 1989 release feel a little dated. But old isn't necessarily bad. So listener Jackson M. posed this question to Shat The Movies: Does a 35-year-old "The Little Mermaid" still hold up? And it was a tough one to answer. In this episode, the Shat Crew explores whether Ariel was a nightmare child, why King Triton entrusted her safety to a singing crab and how Disney handled a teen mermaid's transition into a human girl. This oft-overlooked entry in the Disney Renaissance has a curious legacy nearly thirty years later. The Hunchback of Notre Dame explored themes that Disney would dare not go near today. It's fondly remembered by its fans. Should it be a true classic?
