This week we start by reviewing Nicholas Stoller and Billy Eichner's BROS (2:25), a funny, acerbic queer rom-com where two gay men from very different backgrounds (Eichner and Luke Macfarlane) unexpectedly find love in New York City. Next, we dig into Todd Field's TÁR (24:17), a complex portrait of a problematic character—a world-renowned conductor at the height of her career, Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), who has done awful things to those around her. Josh is joined by recurring guest John Pulice to talk about "Bros." They discuss how Billy Eichner put his own spin on the rom-com genre in making the first ever studio rom-com with gay lead characters, Eichner's chemistry with the romantic interest played by Luke McFarlane, their desire for a dating app based on Oscar-nominated actresses and much more!
This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Billy Eichner, writer/star of rom-com Bros, and his co-star Luke Macfarlane, sit down with Chris Hewitt for a fun and frank chat about shooting sex scenes, Eichner's long struggle to bring a gay love story to the big screen with the backing of a major studio, and why podcasts are the new porn. Then Chris also sits down with British actress Georgina Campbell, star of this week's cracking new horror Barbarian, for a spoiler-free chat which includes Campbell's Halloween double-bill recommendations. Then Chris is joined in the virtual podbooth by Helen O'Hara and Ella Kemp for a fun episode in which they try not to answer any questions about scary films, but end up talking about the most terrifying movie clowns anyway. They also discuss the week's movie news, including James Gunn being hired as co-CEO of DC Studios, and review Bros, Barbarian, The Good Nurse, Triangle Of Sadness, and Wendell & Wild. Oh, and Chris loses his mind over an upcoming threequel. No, not that one. Nor that one either. Enjoy.

The Billy Eichner comedy Bros was undeniably funny, but also a box office failure. Eichner blamed homophobia, but it's more complicated, Mike argues, but also not terribly more complicated. Of course, depictions of gay sex—some tame, some raunchy—hurt box office. Plus, Michele Tafoya is back to discuss the topics that prompted her to leave Thursday Night Football for her Sideline Sanity podcast and an ambush interview with Dan Le Batard. Billy Eichner's new gay rom-com “Bros” has been a box office flop, and he thinks it's due to homophobic, straight audiences resisting it. But in highlighting the elements of LGBTQ culture that are stereotypes, Eichner forgoes universally appealing themes and opts for lifestyle normalization. ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

In this week's BFG podcast, contributor Matthew Ehrlich makes a vaunted return to the proceedings with a savage denunciation of ‘Blonde‘, the brutal and unpleasant Marilyn Monroe biopic now taking up space on Netflix. It features not one, but two abortion scenes from the point of view of Marilyn Monroe's vagina. If that sounds fun, then Blonde is the nearly three-hour movie for you!Sharyn Vane and Michael Washburn join host Neal Pollack next to discuss trends in censorship. Sharyn is very disturbed by the recent trend of people emailing bomb threats to public libraries. Michael doesn't condone that, but points out that the threats haven't led to any actual bombings. Yet. He finds himself more concerned that defenders of free speech seem committed to defending books with trendy and “woke” points of view, but classics like To Kill A Mockingbird don't inspire the same passion. Neal, as is his tendency, straddles the middle path and agrees with both of them. A great discussion. Then Matthew Ehrlich returns to talk to Neal about ‘Bros,' the Billy Eichner gay romantic comedy that definitely doesn't owe its lack of success at the box office to homophobia. Matthew (and his boyfriend) found the central relationship flat. Neal found Eichner's character whiny and self-pitying, though he liked some of the pop-culture parodies.

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham & Dan Bayer. Together we're reviewing the newest film from Nicholas Stoller, "Bros," starring Billy Eichner, Luke Macfarlane, Harvey Fierstein, Ts Madison, Monica Raymund, Guillermo Díaz, Guy Branum, Amanda Bearse, Jim Rash & Bowen Yang. The first major studio film with an all-gay cast, the romantic comedy, written by Stoller and Eichner, is making history and knows it too as it presents a modern rom-com that understands the LGBTQ+ history that came before it and what will hopefully come after its release. What did we think of the characters, the writing, the jokes, and how it portrays gay romantic relationships? Please take a listen down below and enjoy! Thank you! In the grand tradition of the modern rom-com, stories about queer couples are still few and far between. Which is part of what makes the new movie Bros so special: Billy Eichner stars as a lanky intellectual who boasts a proud aversion to romance until he has a meet-cute with his polar opposite, a hyper-masculine gym rat played by Luke Macfarlane. Eichner co-wrote the movie, and Judd Apatow is a producer, so unsurprisingly, the jokes can be broad and raunchy. But there's plenty of heart here, too.
Comedy is not exactly in vogue among big studios, so when filmmakers Judd Apatow and Nicholas Stoller approached actor Billy Eichner about making ‘Bros,' the first big-studio, big-screen LGBTQ+ rom-com for Universal Pictures, he was skeptical. “I have an openly gay man in comedy for over 20 years,” he said, “and I am telling you that even the most gay-friendly execs at a major studio are not going to greenlight this movie. And even if they do, they're not going to let me tell it in an authentic, honest way.” The movie was greenlit, and now Eichner talks about starring on a feature film for the first time, the thrill of co-writing the script with Stoller and how a major movie studio came on board to make a gay romatic comedy came to life. But first, Kim Masters and Matt Belloni look into the return of The Golden Globes to NBC in 2023, and what it means for next year's awards season.
Tracking hurricane Fiona as it leaves Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic devastated. Also, judge vacates murder conviction of Adnan Syed after a podcast that focused public attention on his case. Plus, Jennifer Lopez helps launch a 14 billion dollar effort to support Latina entrepreneurs and small businesses. And, Luke Macfarlane and Billy Eichner in studio 1A to talk about the history making of the first gay rom com “The Bros Movie.”
Feminism's Empire (Cornell UP, 2022) investigates the complex relationships between imperialisms and feminisms in the late nineteenth century and demonstrates the challenge of conceptualizing "pro-imperialist" and "anti-imperialist" as binary positions. By intellectually and spatially tracing the era's first French feminists' engagement with empire, Carolyn J. Eichner explores how feminists opposed—yet employed—approaches to empire in writing, speaking, and publishing. In differing ways, they ultimately tied forms of imperialism to gender liberation. Among the era's first anti-imperialists, French feminists were enmeshed in the hierarchies and epistemologies of empire. They likened their gender-based marginalization to imperialist oppressions. Imperialism and colonialism's gendered and sexualized racial hierarchies established categories of inclusion and exclusion that rested in both universalism and ideas of "nature" that presented colonized people with theoretical, yet impossible, paths to integration. Feminists faced similar barriers to full incorporation due to the gendered contradictions inherent in universalism. The system presumed citizenship to be male and thus positioned women as outsiders. Feminism's Empire connects this critical struggle to hierarchical power shifts in racial and national status that created uneasy linkages between French feminists and imperial authorities. Dr. Carolyn J. Eichner about is a Professor of History and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Feminism's Empire is her third book. Carolyn Eichner's new book, The Paris Commune: A Brief History (Rutgers University Press, 2022) was published on March 18th, the anniversary of the eruption of Paris Commune of 1871. In this accessible history of the 72-day uprising during which the working-class people of Paris established their own government; experimented with forms of radical democracy and social change; and resisted the forces of the French state and military, Eichner explores the Commune within the context of nineteenth-century political, economic, and cultural history in France and beyond its borders. Structured in three parts/chapters that take up the metaphorics of illumination, fluorescence, and explosion, the book follows the lives, ideas, and actions of Communards who sought to bring about a new society, and were ultimately crushed in their efforts. After two and a half months, the French government under the leadership of Adolphe Thiers crushed the Commune during the "Bloody Week" of May 21st-28th. Thousands of Communards met their violent ends in the streets of Paris while others were arrested, tried, and deported. The book is short and rich, clear and dramatic, an excellent resource for students, readers academic and non, anyone interested in a smart, clear introduction to these events and figures with such mythological status in the histories of popular resistance and revolution. It is also a fascinating account for those more familiar with the Commune. Attentive to the role of women and gender throughout, and interested in understanding the Commune's achievements as well as its limitations, Eichner's account revisits some of the long-standing debates about the Commune's course, and its legacies. Bonne lecture! Roxanne Panchasi is an Associate Professor of History at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada who specializes in twentieth and twenty-first century France and its empire. Charlie and Rudy join Carolyn Eichner, author of The Paris Commune: A Brief History and Surmounting the Barricades: Women in the Paris Commune for a discussion on the Paris Commune, its origins, its place as a transitional state in a civil war, its tragic end as well as its legacies. We talk about the situation of Paris in 1871, the forming of the Commune, the meaning of "social republic" and how women had to fight for a place in it, the political tendencies in the Commune, the cooperatives and their contradictions, and the grassroots movements in the form of political clubs. We discuss the Union des Femmes (Women's Union), the struggle against patriarchy and the Catholic church, how public space was reclaimed and how education and culture were re-imagined. We continue with the end of the commune in the Bloody Week, how women were particularly demonized through the myth of the pétroleuses, and the mass executions. We end by discussing the legacies of the Commune in feminisms and political thought, as well as the more negative episodes with the deportation of communards to New Caledonia and their role in upholding settler-colonialism.
