Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, Alex and Walker were gifted with a familiar category; Animated Movies. This time around, the two decided on the 2007 classic Beowulf. "In the age of heroes, a mighty warrior named Beowulf (Ray Winstone) arrives at the court of King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) and offers to rid the kingdom of a vicious demon called Grendel. He successfully slays the beast but thus incurs the wrath of Grendel's mother (Angelina Jolie), a creature as vicious and vengeful as she is seductive." Want to know how it ends? Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker drew the category of Movies Ahead of Their Time. In one of our earlier episodes, the duo had chosen Psycho for this category. This time around, they chose another classic that's sure to turn a few heads. Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film A Clockwork Orange seemed to be the logical choice, and gave the boys a lot to talk about. "In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn't go as planned." Want to know more? Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, our hosts Alex and Walker strayed away from the normal format and chose their own category instead of relying on the Reel of Fate. The chose to use this episode to honor the late Ray Liotta who recently passed away. The two thought what better way to honor him then to watch Martin Scorsese's film Goodfellas. "A young man grows up in the mob and works very hard to advance himself through the ranks. He enjoys his life of money and luxury, but is oblivious to the horror that he causes. A drug addiction and a few mistakes ultimately unravel his climb to the top. Based on the book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi." Want to know how it ends? Welcome back Reel Friends! Last episode, Alex and Walker were given the category of best Western films. After discussing a few options, the two decided on the 2010 remake of True Grit. "After an outlaw named Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) murders her father, feisty 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) hires Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), a boozy, trigger-happy lawman, to help her find Chaney and avenge her father. The bickering duo are not alone in their quest, for a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) is also tracking Chaney for reasons of his own. Together the unlikely trio ventures into hostile territory to dispense some Old West justice." Want to know how the journey ends? Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, Alex and Walker tackle a familiar category, Best Opening Scene. This movie has been mentioned before, and happens to be Alex's favorite childhood movie. The two decided that The Lion King was a great fit for the category. "This Disney animated feature follows the adventures of the young lion Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), the heir of his father, Mufasa (James Earl Jones). Simba's wicked uncle, Scar (Jeremy Irons), plots to usurp Mufasa's throne by luring father and son into a stampede of wildebeests. But Simba escapes, and only Mufasa is killed. Simba returns as an adult (Matthew Broderick) to take back his homeland from Scar with the help of his friends Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella)." Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, Alex and Walker had the task of sorting through sci-fi films for this week's category. Ultimately they chose to watch 2201: A Space Odyssey. "An imposing black structure provides a connection between the past and the future in this enigmatic adaptation of a short story by revered sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke. When Dr. Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission, their ship's computer system, HAL, begins to display increasingly strange behavior, leading up to a tense showdown between man and machine that results in a mind-bending trek through space and time." Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker spun the Reel Of Fate and were given the category of Walker's Choice. As we've seen before, this meant that Walker had to suggest a few movies he was interested in, and Alex had to choose a film from those suggestions. To our surprise (not really), 1917 was one of Walker's top suggestions. A war film suggestion? From Walker?? Who woulda guessed! But Alex was intrigued by the plot of the story, and decided to finally give it a shot after hearing about it for the last two years. And honestly, what a film it was my friends. This 2019 war film takes place on April 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap. This movie, directed by Sam Mendes, is a beautifully shot and well researched film about World War 1. From accurately designed tranches, fantastic acting, and gut wrenching scenes, you are enveloped into the horrors and triumph these brave men faced. This movie will have you holding your breath, anxiously waiting for the next turn of events. Want to know more? Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, Alex and Walker revisit one of the first categories they ever released, Oscar Wins For Forgettable Roles. This time, they chose Monster's Ball for Halle Berry's win for Best Actress in a Leading Role. "After a family tragedy, a racist prison guard re-examines his attitudes while falling in love with the African-American wife of the last prisoner he executed." This movie has plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Want to know how it ends? Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker were given the category of Amazon Prime Originals. After a few good mentions, the pair ultimately decided on Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. "Released from prison for bringing shame to his country, Kazakh funnyman Borat risks life and limb when he returns to America with his 15-year-old daughter, and this time he reveals more about the American culture, the COVID-19 pandemic and the political elections." Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, Alex and Walker tackle the category of Decade Favorites! We have seen this category before, but this time we're looking at the 1950's. After discussing some excellent potentials, the guys decided on Rebel Without a Cause. "After moving to a new town, troublemaking teen Jim Stark (James Dean) is supposed to have a clean slate, although being the new kid in town brings its own problems. While searching for some stability, Stark forms a bond with a disturbed classmate, Plato (Sal Mineo), and falls for local girl Judy (Natalie Wood). However, Judy is the girlfriend of neighborhood tough, Buzz (Corey Allen). When Buzz violently confronts Jim and challenges him to a drag race, the new kid's real troubles begin." Welcome back Reel Friends! We are so happy to be back after taking a week off, and your boys have picked an awesome film to discuss for you this week! Last episode, Alex and Walker were given the category of Twists That Ruined Movies. This is a category they have used before, so they were excited to add more movies to the list. Eventually, the two decided on A History of Violence. This 2005 David Cronenberg film has an amazing cast including Vigo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and the late William Hurt. "When a pair of petty criminals attempt to rob his small-town diner, Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) quickly and easily kills them both. In the flush of news coverage of Tom's seemingly heroic actions, a threatening stranger named Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris) comes to town, fingering the unassuming family man as long-missing Philadelphia mobster Joey Cusack." With such a star studded cast and interesting premise, it would almost seem like a shock it would belong in this category, but your hosts and movie goers around the globe seem to agree that it does. Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, Alex and Walker dive into the category of Worst Dialogue. When we first saw this category, the obvious choice was Troll 2. This time, our hosts did some more digging and had more options to choose from. Ultimately, the pair decided on Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. "Every generation, a portal opens up between the Outerworld and Earth. Emperor Shao-Kahn (Brian Thompson), ruler of the mythical Outerworld, pounces the moment the portal reopens and slips through with his mighty warriors, intent on total domination and uniting the two worlds. However, he has only seven days to complete his task. In the meantime, opposition grows and warriors Sonya Blade (Sandra Hess), Jax (Lynn "Red" Williams), Kitana (Talisa Soto) and Liu Kang (Robin Shou) get ready for war." Want to know more? Please research the film and the events this film follows before continuing. Thank you! ***Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker were given the category of Foreign Films. Our hosts had a few to choose from, but ultimately decided on the 2000 film debut of Alejandro González Iñárritu, Amores Perros. "'Amores Perros' is a bold, intensely emotional, and ambitious story of lives that collide in a Mexico City car crash. Inventively structured as a triptych of overlapping and intersecting narratives, "Amores Perros" explores the lives of disparate characters who are catapulted into unforeseen dramatic situations instigated by the seemingly inconsequential destiny of a dog named Cofi." Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, your hosts Alex and Walker landed on a category that shouldn't be too unfamiliar, Alex's Choice. With Alex having no criteria or guidelines to follow while making his choice, the two knew they were in for an interesting pick. Surprise surprise, the they landed on a horror pick (for Alex's choice? NO WAY MAN!). Today, the boys dive in and watch the 2002 Lucky McKee film May. Welcome back Reel Friends! You're in for a treat this week. Alex and Walker were given the category of Best Picture Winners by the Reel of Fate. It's not easy to choose from such a fantastic list as this, but after some awesome honorable mentions, the two decided on No Country for Old Men. This 2007 Coen brother's film is packed full of tense and thrilling turns, leaving you guessing until the very end. Not only was it a best picture winner, but it also resulted in Javier Bardem being the first all Spanish-language actor to win an oscar for Best Actor. "While out hunting, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the grisly aftermath of a drug deal. Though he knows better, he cannot resist the cash left behind and takes it with him. The hunter becomes the hunted when a merciless killer named Chigurh (Javier Bardem) picks up his trail. Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, the Reel Of Fate gave our hosts an intriguing and unfortunate category; On-Scene Tragedies. This category definitely narrowed down the list of potential films for the week, but Alex and Walker both agreed that one stood out in particular. When thinking of movies that have such tragedies, most people think of the 1994 thriller The Crow. While shooting the movie, lead actor Brandon Lee suffered a fatal gunshot to the abdomen when a prop gun was improperly loaded with a live bullet. Tragedy aside, this film is definitely a classic, and one of Alex's favorite movies. In this film, we follow Eric, a man who was brutally murdered. He comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder. Want to know more? Then sit back, relax, and enjoy this week's episode of Spin The Reel!Don't forget to rate and subscribe! Welcome back Reel Friend! This week, our hosts Alex and Walker landed on a category that is just "out of this world!" *wink wink* That's right, Not Of This World brings a lot of movies to the discussion, and the two decided on a newer movie starring Chris Pratt as the main character. This movie is The Tomorrow War; "The world is stunned when a group of time travellers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: thirty years in the future, mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species." "After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes." Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, our hosts Alex and Walker had to choose a movie that had a very misleading trailer. After talking over some options, the duo decided on a film with a very misleading trailer indeed; The Cabin In The Woods. "When five college friends (Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams) arrive at a remote forest cabin for a little vacation, little do they expect the horrors that await them. One by one, the youths fall victim to backwoods zombies, but there is another factor at play." Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, our hosts Alex and Walker took on the daunting task of finding a movie for their new category, Remakes That Are Better Than The Original. With opinions at full force, the two decided on and old favorite of Alex's; The Fly. Released in 1986, this remake directed by David Cronenberg follows "scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) who completes his teleportation device. and he decides to test its abilities on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a merger of man and insect. Initially, Brundle appears to have undergone a successful teleportation, but the fly's cells begin to take over his body. As he becomes increasingly fly-like, Brundle's girlfriend (Geena Davis) is horrified as the person she once loved deteriorates into a monster." Want to know how this twisted drama unfolds? Welcome back Reel Friends! Oh boy oh boy oh boy!! Episode 40 came like a shot in the dark, and our hosts landed on a fantastic category for y'all this week. Over the months they've been doing the show, Alex and Walker have kept track of all the movies you, our listeners, have suggested for different categories. Finally, the Reel of Fate gifted our boys the category of Listener's Choice! This is a category the duo have wanted to do for some time now, and they finally got the chance. Instead of choosing themselves, they made a secondary wheel to help guide them to the right movie. This week's movie choice was Blade! In this 1998 film starring the one and only Wesley Snipes, we follow a half-vampire, half-mortal man who becomes a protector of the mortal race, while slaying evil vampires. This action packed vampire movie was the perfect way for our hosts to start off their week, and for episode 40! Want to hear more? Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts were gifted the category of Coming of Age Movies. After going through a wonderful list of classics, our pair decided on a movie that neither one of them had seen that was more modern. Ladybird is a 2017 film set in 2002, where an artistically inclined seventeen-year-old girl "Ladybird" comes of age in Sacramento, California. In this drama/comedy, our hosts are taken through some of the highs and lows of teenage life, reliving their time growing up. ** TW. Keep in mind Reel Friends, this episode covers heavy topics that could potentially be triggers for some listeners. Please research the film and the events this film follows before continuing. Thank you! **Welcome back Reel Friends! We're kicking off November with an absolute masterpiece of a film. At the end of our last spooky episode of the season, our hosts Alex and Walker returned to their run of the mill wheel and were gifted the category of Movies Based On Real Events. Not too long ago, the boys did an episode on biopics. Keeping that in mind, they wanted a movie that focused more on an event, as opposed to one singular person. This lead our hosts to choose the 2015 Best Picture winner, Spotlight. "In 2001, editor Marty Baron of The Boston Globe assigns a team of journalists to investigate allegations against John Geoghan, an unfrocked priest accused of molesting more than 80 boys. Led by editor Walter "Robby" Robinson (Michael Keaton), reporters Michael Rezendes (Mark Ruffalo), Matt Carroll and Sacha Pfeiffer interview victims and try to unseal sensitive documents. The reporters make it their mission to provide proof of a cover-up of sexual abuse within the Roman Catholic Church." Welcome back Reel Friends! A bittersweet episode this week, as we are finishing our Spooky Month categories this week! We've had loads of fun getting these Halloween specials together for you, and your hosts hit it out of the park with this week's choice. Alex and Walker were given the category of Foreign Horror. This was a category made for our resident horror buff Alex, and he had quite the list for the two of them to choose from. Eventually the two landed on the 1999 Japanese film Audition. "This disturbing Japanese thriller follows Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), a widower who decides to start dating again. Aided by a film-producer friend (Jun Kunimura), Aoyama uses auditions for a fake production to function as a dating service. When Aoyama becomes intrigued by the withdrawn, gorgeous Asami (Eihi Shiina), they begin a relationship. However, he begins to realize that Asami isn't as reserved as she appears to be, leading to gradually increased tension and a harrowing climax." Want to know more? Welcome back Reel Friends! This is week three of our Spooktober episodes, and boy oh boy did our hosts spin a great category. Alex and Walker were given a chance to choose their picks for their favorite Scream Queens. After some thoughtful discussion of honorable mentions, the two decided to let someone knew to the scream queen stage take her seat in the spotlight. The Witch was chosen for Anya Taylor-Joy's role as Thomasin. Robert Eggers wrote and directed this 2015 horror flick, where we follow a family in 1630s New England, and how they are torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic, and possession. Welcome back Reel Friends! Week two of Spooktober is upon us, and our hosts are settling in quite nicely! The Horror Reel of Fate was kind enough to give Alex and Walker the category of Horror Comedies. Both of our guys had a few films to choose from, all with their unique attributes to this category. At the end of the day, a single film won out as the pick of the week. None other than Stephen King's directorial debut, Maximum Overdrive. In this film, we follow a group of people try to survive when machines start to come alive and become homicidal. Horror and comedy blend in a uniquely funny and nail biting way in this 1986 classic. Welcome back Reel Friends, and say hello to Spooky Season! Last week, our hosts Alex and Walker introduced us to a brand new wheel just in time for the holidays. On the "Halloween Reel Of Fate", we were in for a scary surprise when the category of Creative Killers was announced. With so many directions to go, the two ultimately landed on A Nightmare on Elm St. This 1984 horror classic was directed by none other than Wes Craven himself. "The monstrous spirit of a slain child murderer seeks revenge by invading the dreams of teenagers whose parents were responsible for his untimely death". Just when you thought hiding under the covers was your safest bet, this movie embraces just how wrong you are. Want to know more? Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, our hosts Alex and Walker were gifted the category of movies with the best soundtracks. The duo decided to stay away from original scores, and focus on movies that utilized songs to further the plot of their story. After some great mentions, Alex's pick of O Brother, Where Art Thou? was ultimately chosen. "Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney) is having difficulty adjusting to his hard-labor sentence in Mississippi. He scams his way off the chain gang with simple Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) and maladjusted Pete (John Turturro), then the trio sets out to pursue freedom and the promise of a fortune in buried treasure. With nothing to lose and still in shackles, their hasty run takes them on an incredible journey of awesome experiences and colorful characters." This Coen brother film is a wonderful tale, resembling the story of Homer's The Odyssey. With a band name like The Soggy Bottom Boys, our hosts were in for a special treat with this wonderful soundtrack. Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts Alex and Walker landed on the movie category of Bio Pics. These two had plenty of movies in mind, and there was a long list of favorites to choose from. After all this time trying to get Alex to watch it, Walker finally found the perfect category to suggest Hacksaw Ridge. Our resident war film buff has been dying for this movie to be chosen, and this week his wish was finally granted! Hacksaw Ridge is a film about World War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa. He refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. This movie will have you laughing, crying, and cheering the whole way through. Want to know how he earns that medal? Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts were gifted an unusually vague category from the Reel of Fate; Movies That Could Have Been Completely Different. With so many different ways this category could've been interpreted, Alex and Walker decided to choose three different movies each that they felt fit the category. After talking it out and explaining their reasonings behind why they chose these particular films, the pair ultimately landed on Beverly Hills Cop. "A freewheeling Detroit cop pursuing a murder investigation finds himself dealing with the very different culture of Beverly Hills." This 1984 classic stars Eddie Murphy, comedy genius, at the height of his comedic career. The reason it could've been different? Wouldn't you like to know! Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker landed on the category of Animated Films. Since they already have an entire category dedicated to Disney films already, our hosts chose to steer away from those and try to think of something a bit more out of the box. This lead Alex to suggesting Princess Mononoke. This film was released in 1997, directed by the famous Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli. "In the 14th century, the harmony that humans, animals and gods have enjoyed begins to crumble. The protagonist, young Ashitaka - infected by an animal attack, seeks a cure from the deer-like god Shishigami. In his travels, he sees humans ravaging the earth, bringing down the wrath of wolf god Moro and his human companion Princess Mononoke. His attempts to broker peace between her and the humans brings only conflict." With beautiful artwork and fantasy based stories, this movie seemed like a shoe-in for this category. Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts Alex and Walker landed on the category of Dude Flicks. For a couple of dudes themselves, they had a plethora of movies in mind that they could choose from. At the end of the day, Waiting... seemed like a great choice. "Staffers at the restaurant Shenaniganz engage in various pranks and games -- both on and off the clock. However, in the course of one day, waiter Dean (Justin Long) must choose to either accept a promotion to manager or go off in search of greener pastures. Meanwhile, his co-worker and roommate, Monty (Ryan Reynolds), fights temptation in the form of an underage colleague, while showing a new employee (John Francis Daley) the ins and outs, providing him the worst first day of his life." With an impressive cast list like this, there's a huge chance that not o0nly will this film be a host favorite, but a Dude Flick through and through. Want to know more? Welcome back Reel Friends! This week, your hosts Alex and Walker were gifted with the task of finding a movie that isn't the best to watch with your parents. Raunchy, dirty, and downright cringey were some of the attributes they looked for to choose their film of the week. This lead them to the class 2003 film, Old School. "Three friends attempt to recapture their glory days by opening up a fraternity near their alma mater." A fraternity movie? Yeah, watching that with your parents is never a good idea. Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts Alex and Walker landed on the category of Disney Favorites. With so many movies to choose from, the dynamic duo landed on a classic film; Pocahontas! As IMDb simply states, Pocahontas is about an English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief sharing a romance when English colonists invade seventeenth century Virginia. Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker were given the category of Silent Films. Since they're not as popular as they once were, our hosts took the time to think this one out carefully. Finally, they landed on the amazing classic (that is almost 100 years old??) Nosferatu. This silent horror film depicts the story of the vampire Count Orlok, who expresses interest in a new residence and real estate agent Hutter's wife. Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts were given an exciting category from the Reel Of Fate; Great Cast, Weak Movie. Alex and Walker took to the internet to find a movie that fit the category without their own bias intervening. A resounding answer was found in their sleuthing, and Movie 43 seemed to be the best choice. Just to name a few, this movie has a cast including Elizabeth Banks, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Johnny Knoxville, and Halle Berry. That's just the tip of the iceberg! How could a movie filled with A-List actors flop so hard with a 4.3 rating on IMDb, and a metascore of 18???? Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts were gifted the category of Horror Movies! Alex is an absolute lover of horror movies, and couldn't wait for this category to show up. Which is why it was such a unexpected, but welcome, surprise that Walker's suggestion of Hereditary was chosen to be this week's film! "When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited."This slow burn horror film will keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire run time, keeping you guessing at every turn. Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, our hosts landed on the category of Chick Flicks. Should be no problem for two white guys right?? After some talk of their favorite "chick flick" movies, the duo decided on one of Alex's favorite movies, never seen by Walker, Mean Girls! Cady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George. This movie brings in the nostalgia of High School, and the guys share about their personal experiences with cliques, teachers, and the "mean girls" of today. Interested? Welcome back Reel Friends! On last week's episode, Alex and Walker were gifted the category of Movies Ahead Of Their Time. With a few movies in mind, the duo inevitably landed on an Alfred Hitchcock classic, Psycho. "Phoenix office worker Marion Crane is fed up with the way life has treated her. She has to meet her lover Sam in lunch breaks, and they cannot get married because Sam has to give most of his money away in alimony. One Friday, Marion is trusted to bank forty thousand dollars by her employer. Seeing the opportunity to take the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town and heads towards Sam's California store. Tired after the long drive and caught in a storm, she gets off the main highway and pulls into the Bates Motel. The motel is managed by a quiet young man called Norman who seems to be dominated by his mother". Welcome back Reel Friends! Last week, Alex and Walker stumbled on quite an intriguing category; One Hit Wonder Actor Movies. After giving it some thought, reading WAY too many terrible lists, and almost losing their heads, our intrepid hosts fought their way to the grand conclusion of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory! The biggest reason for this decision is because main character Charlie Bucket was played by Peter Ostrum. Peter is only credited on IMDb for this movie, and afterwords left Hollywood's fame and fortune to become a veterinarian! What a wonderful role to have, especially it being his only one. As well as being a classic and favorite of our hosts, this movie also fit the category perfectly. Excited to hear the conclusion?
