To make a good movie, you can take something expected (your standard romantic comedy, good vs. evil, etc.) and execute it at a high level, or you can take a familiar situation and keep tossing unexpected things at the audience to keep them on their toes.With that second scenario, it's still necessary — and arguably more difficult — to do it well, which is what Olivia Wilde seems to have pulled off with her third directorial effort, The Invite.The nature of the project almost required Wilde and the cast (including herself) to tap into their crazier creative impulses. The setting is a single location. The centerpiece is a couples dinner party, which most grown-ups will tell you isn't the place to go mining for high-quality entertainment. That all gets turned on its head pretty quickly, when the dinner-party invitation is reciprocated with a sex-party invitation.As you'll hear Dori and Kpolly discuss in this episode, the very adventurous offer is only the start of what makes The Invite such a good watch. The tension shifts throughout, as discomfort ventures into curiosity. The single-location setting demands inventive cinematography that bounces shots off mirrors and uses clever camera angles to capture the action.And, yes, there is action — just not the shoot-em-up variety. The dialogue is sharp and paced in such a way that it manages to get your adrenaline pumping by building tension and then letting it release as the quartet of characters navigate a night that doesn't go quite how anyone expected.The four-person cast hit just right, too, even though the original stars (including Amy Adams, Paul Rudd and Tessa Thompson) wound up giving way as the project was stuck in a holding pattern for a couple years. The on-screen group of Wilde, Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton fit together nicely, aided by touches like Rogen's improv and the serious backstory Norton gave his character.Maybe the most unexpected thing that Dori and Kpolly found was the heart interlaced throughout the film, which balanced what could've been an uncomfortable snark-fest. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay keep the 4/20 vibes going and spark up a cross-shaped spliff before talking about 'Pineapple Express.' Andy takes the first hit by recalling a wild time he was living the post-divorced bachelor life, and one of his greatest days was abruptly ruined while heading out to surf. Then the fellas talk about David Gordon Green's action-comedy that is an all-around stoner's delight. Starts off as a weed hang movie with Seth Rogen's Dale spending time at James Franco's Saul's pad. This reminds the guys of the days they used to hang out at weed dealer friend's house, and how it led to many uncomfortable interactions with customers. That leads to discussing Rogen's iconography and wondering if he is his generation's Cheech/Chong (sans permanent sidekick). Besides the two leads there's also a great role from an unkillable Danny McBride who swoops in and steals virtually every scene he is in. In the last third the movie switches gears to a full blown action flick, while also keeping the gags rolling. Add on top a sizzling Rosie Perez, and you have the makings for the perfect movie to watch while getting smoked out.

Chase Sui Wonders has already proven herself a scene-stealing force via titles like Generation and Bodies Bodies Bodies, but 2025 is solidifying her as an undeniable star. In March, she debuted The Studio, an Apple TV+ series in which she stars opposite powerhouses Seth Rogen, Catherine O'Hara, Ike Barinholtz and Kathryn Hahn. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 316: Adam Newport-Berra The Studio creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg exploited every part of their knowledge and experience in the film industry to find the show's humor. Cinematographer Adam Newport-Berra worked closely with Rogen and Goldberg to achieve the show's signature style. They found the most dynamic ways to shoot scenes, with camera movements that immerse the audience in the characters' anxiety and panic. “It meant moving with the characters, moving through spaces, and finding ways to just keep the momentum of a scene going,” Adam explains. “We made very strong decisions early in the process. We're only gonna shoot with one camera, we're gonna shoot every scene in one shot, we're gonna shoot with one lens. It funnels down your choices and your options on set in a way that I think is really special. I think we make the most creative decisions when we're limited.” The Studio relies on nimble, handheld camera work on gimbals and magnetic rigs for its many one-shot takes. The crew avoided over-intellectualizing each scene, prioritizing a dynamic feel and incorporating homages to numerous films. “I think a lot of it really came down to the writing and the material,” says Adam. “Seth and Evan are very smart. They've been doing this for a long time. They know what they like and they leaned into that in the writing.” While a script provided the foundation, many scenes were reworked on set. Rogen and Goldberg would collaborate with the actors to refine the rhythm and enhance the material. Actors frequently contributed lines and ideas, leading to on-the-spot script revisions. However, improvisation had to fit into the impeccable timing for both the acting and camera work, leaving little room for error. Some shots required 20 takes, with the initial few serving as warmups. “It was a very non-traditional way to make a show,” Adam notes, “but everyone's firing on all cylinders, everyone's bringing 100 percent.” Rather than creating traditional shot lists, Rogen and Goldberg would work out complex camera moves with the crew directly on location. Often, they'd envision a desired shot and then structure the scene to organically lead to it. The crew and actors would block and rehearse scenes together and separately, allowing the story to unfold naturally. For a show as dynamic as The Studio, Adam learned to keep the lighting as simple as possible. The lighting had to take a backseat to the camera movement, so typically, every episode relied on natural light. Adam trusted in modern camera sensor technology and the colorist to ensure the actors looked their best.
